Open Thread: Talk About Coach Cal and the Wildcats

Use this thread to continue the discussion about Coach Calipari coming to Kentucky.

Some news bits:

  • Mike DeCourcy has all the reasons why Calipari will succeed.
  • The Charlotte Observer says that Calipari left for the money.  They don't get it now, but they will.
  • This Florida piece says that Calipari is less qualified than Tubby Smith.  Well, you have to say that Smith has more national championships, but Calipari has more Final Fours and a higher winning percentage in college.  Qualifications are in the eye of the beholder.
  • The Loathsome Troll Jeff Goodman says Calipari is the right coach for UK.  I agree with him.  Which is something.
  • Michael Avery keeping close tabs on the UK coaching situation.
  • The Dallas Morning News says SMU should call Billy Gillispie.

More later.

Cal

is more qualified then Tubby was when he came here. If you take out that Tubby was an assistant…….

Not Even Close

Calipari is THE most qualified coach Uk has ever hired.

That's Exactly What I Wrote

You said that. I said he’s > than all UK coaches ever hired.

The “>” means More Qualified Than in Internet lingo.

Its also pretty standard in math class for "Greater Than"

Maybe

its from watching that dern door yesterday but apparently I am not smart enough to realize what this conversation is about. It seems that I said the Cal was more qualified then Tubby and then Forty seemed to agree and then I said “didn’t I say that”, and he said no I didn’t and then used those darn more then less then signs. Which by the way my only memory from school was the big alligator(greater) eats the less then. So I am just so confused right now. Some one please help me.

No need for that. I was just confused about what the hell you were going back and forth about. Although, I have come to understand thats just what you do.

More qualified than Eddie Sutton?

Sutton had a pretty strong body of work when he took over.

I do agree, but it’s close, at least in my opinion.

Exciting stuff all around

Sounds like he said all the right things and gave a nod in the direction of all the right people.

The on the court stuff won’t be determined until next November… but so far he’s one up on Gillispie with the public aspect of the job.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

BCG to SMU might be a good fit

Aside from some annoying jabs at UK fans in that article, the columnist talks a lot of sense about how BCG could help them.

Also interesting about how if he went there, he would be replacing…Matt Doherty.

The Best Article

is by Gregg Doyel on CBS Sportsline. It may have been referenced on this thread but I honestly have seen too much in the last 2 days to remember. I think it’s a must read for any UK fan and only a UK fan will get it.

by modcpa on Apr 1, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

Lots of hyperbole in that article

I think Cal will return UK to consistent elite status, but no one program is going to dominate EVERYONE else like Doyel says. UNC under Roy Williams and UConn under Jim Calhoun, just to name two, are not going to be mere speedbumps on the road for Calipari at UK.

Being consistently very-good-to-great and contending almost every year, a la UNC, UConn, Kansas, etc., is plenty to hope for and acceptably realistic to expect.

by WildcatFanInDC on Apr 1, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

i got the feeling, Coach Cal

could feel the presence of Adolph Rupp, while sitting in Memorial Coliseum , he referenced, another Coach Rupp attending. I think that he truly “get’s” it, and that is what we have needed for a long time

by a2d2 on Apr 1, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

and he opened up his introduction

by a2d2 on Apr 1, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Gregg Doyel

I read his piece.

I think someone needs to check his genealogy tree, because he’s either Cal’s son, or maybe a long lost brother :)

Although I think Cal and UK are a lethal combination, I’m not sure if ANY program can dominate to the extent that he states in his article. But, it is nice to see a non-UK fan be so optimistic and positive about UK’s future.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 1, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Doyel just likes to hype things

He was sky-high on BCG’s prospects for winning “huge” at UK when that hire was announced.

Just

because it didn’t work at Kentucky, doesn’t mean that Billy deserves a school like SMU. He is still one of the top ten coaches in the country.

Wait... Wait... Wait...

Now I was certainly in favor of giving Gillispie one more year… but did you really just say he was a Top Ten coach with a straight face?

Rick Pitino
Coach K
Gary Williams
Roy Williams
Billy Donovan
Tom Izzo
Bill Self
Jim Boeheim
Tubby Smith
Jim Calhoun

That’s ten active coaches who have all won a national title…

I liked him as much as the next guy, but lets be honest… Gillispie’s record doesn’t put him in the top 30 coaches in the country.

Kentucky bretheren united once again! Thanks Cal!

by tenken on Apr 1, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

No, but he's pretty terrible

The small degree of success he’s had there has been based on what Herb Sendek left behind when he took the Arizona St. job.

Although it’s no longer an issue for UK, Sidney Lowe at NC State should stand as a stark example of what can happen when a school hires an alum who isn’t ready for the job.

Recruiting drama

Man am I going to be sick of hearing about this by the end of the summer. The national media and our rivals are already stirring the pot big time. To me, it’s definitely worth the risk. Why? I don’t know if you all caught the memphis player’s interview this morning on ESPN, but he pretty much summed it up when he said to our generation, it’s just Kentucky. To Coach Cal’s generation, it’s much bigger(obviously paraphrasing).
The past ten years have put us behind the eight ball big time when it comes to the national scene and getting top recruits. If we don’t go “all in” with a big name recruiter like Cal now, it may be too late. Just like in poker, you have to take a chance to win. You won’t lose your chips if you don’t put them in the middle of the table, but you won’t win either.

The kids that Cal recruits for the 2010-2011 class...

Were 6 years old when Tubby cut down the nets in 1998. That is ancient history to them, in much the same way that Georgetown winning the national title when I was 6 meant nothing to me in high school and remains nothing to me now.

I was 13 then

I remember it being a pretty big deal, since he had recently been in the Final Four and had accomplished a big turnaround with the Knicks. But I’m sure it wasn’t like this, since the probation was hitting.

I remember Rick laying out his five-year plan for UK to return to elite status, and I think some people even thought that might be optimistic. The fact that they got there even faster than that was a very pleasant surprise.

Wow - just looked at the history website -

Didn’t know that Basil Hayden (I’m assuming the proprietor of my favorite small-batch bourbon) coached Kentucky for the 1927-1928 season.

Unfortunately he went 3-13.

Fairly Certain

That it was a different Basil Hayden. The bourbon is named after a famous Distiller in Maryland, whose family moved to Kentucky. Probably the same family, but not the same man. The player worked in the Insurance and Banking field.

Here is the obituary for the player and coach Basil Hayden: Basil HAyden Obit

Surely there is a relation, or else I’m naming my kid that.

2 different Basil Hayden’s – one coaches the best basketball program on the planet, the other is responsible for one of the best bourbons on the planet. Must be related.

Almost got myself killed in Boston during ‘96 FF. Not only the UMass fans, but the Syracuse fans wanted a piece.
Living in the Northeast, and basing this on the amount of UK gear I see on the street, I’d say a championship/FF appearance gets you a couple of years in the ‘national consciousness’ (ie the minds of recruits). After that, you’re back in the mix with everybody else. No such thing as history.

100%

with you on that Tru. Telling guys that they don’t fit into the system is one thing, then let them decide if you want a front row seat to (40 or so?) great college games next year or if they want to transfer and get PT elsewhere. You do NOT take away scholarships from anyone.

But in reality, there are only three players for which a transfer is realistically possible — Liggins, Harrellson and AJ Stewart. Even if all those transferred tomorrow morning and Porter did not come back, you would still have room only for two more players.

Porter and the seniors

Should be allowed to finish for all they’ve endured, with the exception of maybe Galloway. We’ve discussed this before. Academic scholarships are taken away if the student isn’t performing. I have always felt the same should be true in athletics, which isn’t nearly as important in the long run.

Cats' Perimeter

Many, many interesting items deriving from UK news conference but perhaps none more intriguing than Calipari’s comments on dribble-drive offense. I thought it was revealing that the area where the offense demands talent is the exact area where UK was woeful this year: perimeter play and ability to create shots. Porter, Harris, Stevenson, and even Meeks to a point, were incapable of the process. Miller, Liggins and Galloway were somewhat more proficient but certainly not laudable. Considering Calipari’s remarks that many players are not physically talented enough to play the dribble-drive and should play in another system poses quite a dilemma for current UK perimeter players: bench time or playing time, persevere or scarper. Promises to be an interesting spring and summer and something to maintain our interest until FB season.

I beleive we at least get Cousins

I hate to see guys get booted, but in all fairness theirs alot of players that don’t deserve to be playing for UK. I think we need Wall more than any of them. Can Xavier play point? I know hes a SG.

by danial on Apr 1, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

Won't Get Booted

I think Cal will be honest with the players. He will tell them whether or not they will sniff the court next year. Then he will let them make the decision of whether or not they are fine being fans with front-row seats.

I can not imagine that Todd and Barnhart will let him straight-up boot players off of the team, especially next year’s seniors.

I believe this will be the same with the recruits that have already verballed to Kentucky

Tru...really? Who are the other teams?

With Wall, Meeks, Patterson, Orton, Pilgrim, Miller, Hood, Vilarino…

I can’t name a better 8 man rotation. I know Michigan State is going to look good, but honestly, if Kentucky starts clicking in lat January with the new system, I see no reason they would not be in the Top 5….easily.

by kyeric on Apr 1, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well ...

… I don’t know about better, but at least as good:

1. North Carolina:
2. Duke
3. Kansas
4. UCLA
5. Villanova
6. Connecticut
7. Ohio State
8. Wake Forest
9. Michigan State
10. Syracuse/Louisville/USC/UCLA/several more.

All contingent upon what happens with the NBA draft. The thing is, Calipari will be installing a new system with all new (to him) players. You almost never see a team like that wind up in the top ten in its first year.

Tar Heel Losses

If we’re speaking pre-season then I don’t perceive UNC, considering their losses to graduation (Hansbrough, Green, Frasor and Copeland) and Lawson likely leaving for NBA, to be a top 5 team.

by Wild Weasel on Apr 1, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a hard time...

believing city college will be in the Top 15 next year, at least early on. They are losing a lot through graduation and probably some early exits too. Pretty sure Clarke is going and I wouldn’t be surprised if Samuels stuck his toe in as well.

by jbt36 on Apr 1, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

They have a VERY good class coming in.

I don’t think Samuels will leave, and Terrence Jennings will fill in for Clark just fine. They’ll be very good next season.

I just don’t see them as Top 10 or 15 at the beginning of the season.

by jbt36 on Apr 1, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I would have to add in the fact that Florida might be very good next year.

They only lose Walter Hodge, assuming Calathes does not go pro. They have Kenny Boyten (top 5 overall player), Erik Murphy, and Deshawn Painter (two solid, big power forwards) coming in. Eric Bledsoe also lists Florida as top contender for his services, and Florida had a very good freshman class this year. Yes, they underperformed, but they have a LOT of potential next season.

But I don’t think Billy D is all he’s hyped up to be. Another reason I was glad he said no. I don’t think Duke or UNC will be top five next year by the end. Or Ohio State and Loserville in the to ten.

We have been saying...

PG: ?
SG: Meeks
SF: Miller (Harris)
PF: Patterson (Stevenson)
C: Orton (Pilgrim)

But seriously how much better does it look w/ just one change?

PG: John Wall
SG: Meeks
SF: Miller (Harris)
PF: Patterson (Stevenson)
C: Orton (Pilgrim)

Haha

True! It’ll be interesting to see how this roster turns out.

by ben-p on Apr 1, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

MUCH better with Hood.

We still really need that kid – he’s a 4 (at least 3) year player, and will likely be a great team leader. Wall, Orton, and Cousins (if he qualifies or whatever) give us 2 years at most, probably, and only 1 in the case of Wall.

Anyone have any idea of what Dominique Ferguson will decide to do? We really could use him the following season to replace Patterson.

by blbskue on Apr 1, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope Hood can play the new offense.

Is it his kinda style of play. Is he suited for it? For that matter, what about Orton?

by wklawdog on Apr 1, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

No idea what his style is, but he's a good enough player to do just about anything asked of him, hopefully.

High school ball, espeically AAU, tends to run the more run and gun anyway, so I’m thinking any highly regarded high schooler is going to have had exposure to that style.

Same goes for Orton.

Gillispie On Orton

On Gillispie’s — remember him? — last call-in show he addressed Orton’s playing style: not a back-to-basket player, more a 4 with outstanding hands and feet, able to put ball on floor and run the break. Sounds like a more talented version of Dorsey and should fit the system well.

by Wild Weasel on Apr 1, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He has to create a lot of...

his own shots and he has a pretty good handle. I think he will be fine. One thing I really like about Hood is when he gets around the rim, he tries to tear the damn thing down. He is aggressive, but I guess when you are basically a one man show you don’t have any choice.

by jbt36 on Apr 1, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think...

It’s exactly the style he is suited for.

How quick to learn a new system

Seems like the roster will be pretty impressive either way it shakes out. How quickly do you think the players can adapt to a new coach/new system? I would expect early games may be a little shaky. Cats have proven the last two years that, in early season games, even against inferior athletes, you can’t get by on talent alone.

by markanderin on Apr 1, 2009 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it has to be especially rough on

Meeks, Stevenson, and Harris, as this will be the THIRD system they’ve had to learn.

Look at Memphis the last two years

The system was run by a freshman both times.

Last year he struggled until he put the system in the hands of his freshman point guard. The style is very free flowing and open. These players will come to it naturally.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Apr 1, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

"The style is very free flowing and open"

Yes, that is also my understanding of Calipari’s offense. However, as far as coming into it naturally, I would think that the players who excel at one-on-one style of play will have an easier time fitting in with the system. I’m sure all our current players are capable of learning the system, but I do think that some will come by it much easier than others and quite truthfully, I can see some having a tough time with it due to the fact that as Calipari pointed out in his press conference when referring to the offense and what players must understand, “we can’t hide you”.

Honestly, I am fascinated by the dribble-drive offensive scheme and am quite excited to see it in action by players wearing the UK uniform. Very excited, indeed. : )

From: http://www.kentucky.com/817/story/745968.html (good story about state of football program, Cobb, etc,)

From that story comes the best quote I’ve seen in a long time. In discussing the injury report, Brooks stated that he “had another ‘injury’ to report: ‘We also have a pulled hamstring from Alan Cutler that may limit his playing time early,’ he said. ‘I thought I might see him here, but obviously he’s getting treatment.’ Brooks said he couldn’t resist the comment.”

Does Donald Williams actually exist? Is he/was he ever a Cat? Have I ever seen him on the floor playing?

What’s the story here, because I have forgotten, and most importantly…. was he/is he on scholarship???

by StillCatwoman on Apr 1, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

Williams

He was on scholarship.
He is a Cat.
He never saw a minute of playing time.

IIRC, a caller asked BCG about it back in December and the coach said that he just didn’t see any opportunity for Donald to contribute based on the talent in front of him at the 2/3 position. He said he didn’t want to burn a year of eligibility for a couple minutes in a game that won’t matter.

I think ...

… that since he didn’t play one minute, he probably didn’t use any eligibility at all.

A repeat of the '90s would be A-OK with me

An 8 season stretch with:

7 Elite Eights
4 Final Fours
3 national title games
2 national titles

Not even getting my hopes up that high…that was a RIDICULOUSLY great stretch of success.

by WildcatFanInDC on Apr 1, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

UK Won Over 85% Of Its Games In 40's And 50's

NIT = NCAA in 40’s.

So 6 FF (3 NIT, 3 NCAA) then.

3 NC (2 NCAA, 1 NIT) then.

2 more NC in 50’s plus undefeated (Helms Trophy) season in 1954.

90’s were great but 40’s and 50’s were even better.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 1, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

A bygone era

The ‘40s and ’50s were indeed the golden age for UK, but I don’t think they can ever be that dominant again. I’m not sure anyone can, what with the biggest stars often leaving college early.

by jbt36 on Apr 1, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt that's possible

I just don’t think anyone can be that dominant anymore.

It was 20 years ago that Duke went to 7 Final Fours in 9 seasons. Think anyone’s EVER doing that again? I don’t.

by WildcatFanInDC on Apr 1, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope you're right.

I’m totally sold on his recruiting, but I think he is still learning to be a bench coach.

by jbt36 on Apr 1, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Does he have much left to learn?

Not to say there aren’t things he could still improve on in terms of in-game coaching, but he’s already been a head coach for about 20 years.

by WildcatFanInDC on Apr 1, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not trying to put out anyone's fire.

I’m just saying that the Memphis teams that I have seen lately (last three or four years) simply tried to overwhelm people with talent. The guy can definitely coach, but I don’t think he is a finished product. Wow. That kinda makes it sound scary when you say it like that.

by jbt36 on Apr 1, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps he can develop a wider talent base in recruiting at UK

And that might allow him to broaden his style a bit. Might be the best-case scenario for us.

by WildcatFanInDC on Apr 1, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

That's the Rub in his system

If it is executed correctly on the floor, the players do not need much input from him during the game.

Look at the Final Game last year, if the kids make their free throws, that game is over. Nothing he can do about that from the bench.

I know people say that he should have fouled in the final shot situation, but I very rarely see any coaches foul in a 3-point tie situation. If the player fouls too late and the offense gets the shot to go, then you have lost. He did the smart thing and forced them to make a tough shot to send it to overtime. It went Kansas way, but I don’t see how he could have changed much from the bench in that offense.

by aidanpryde18 on Apr 1, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed on the title game last year

I only believe in fouling when up 3 if the other team has less than 5 seconds on the clock. I’m pretty sure Kansas had several seconds more than that when they brought it up court for the final attempt.

He did take some hits for the FT thing, perhaps deservedly, because he had dismissed questions about it during the season. He had that quote of “it’s 26th on my top 25 list of things that are most important to the team,” or something to that effect.

by WildcatFanInDC on Apr 1, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you think though...

that saying “OH my gosh these kids are so horrible at free throw shooting, you’re right its going to cost them a game” would have helped.

Likely it just would have given the kids more pressure at the FT line and made it even worse.

As a fan of the person with the worst FT shooting form in the NBA.. it’s more psychological than it is physical.

Like the guy said, he won’t throw a kid under the bus. He took the only tactic that he could at the time.

by Hayesfan on Apr 1, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

True, he was probably just trying to defend his guys

But dismissing it as totally unimportant was probably going too far. Maybe he should have just said “I’m confident they’ll make them whenever the game is on the line” or something like that.

by WildcatFanInDC on Apr 1, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

which is exactly what he said -

for the first 5 3/4 games of last year’s tourney, they hit them…….

2 years ago, he “coached” better free throw shooting by telling the team to visualize 10 perfect shots before going to bed

last year he said the will make them when we need them

this year, he had the team start shooting 100 shots in practice and charting them – their FT% from low 60’s to upper 60’s.

his teams’ inability to hit FT has been one of my biggest criticism of him – i am hoping he continues the charting in practice AND maybe he gets Macy to help him :)

He said he and the players were excited

He talked up the catch of the great coach.

Later in the segment, he said he was still going to look at his NBA options, but hasn’t even thought that much about it (the NBA draft) and that he was going to speak with Coach Cal and his parents, and make a final decision after the NCAA tournament was over and the player situation panned out.

Overall though, it wasn’t a “stellar” moment for Jody. His articulation was a bit unpronounced and somewhat “sloppy.”

I don’t know. Just wasn’t very impressed overall. I’ll give it a B – . No energy was there.

Quote of the day

from Cal’s on his first day, in reference to Alan Cutler, “Did you really chase”THAT GUY"?"

And No April Fool's either.

The word is Coach Cal spoke with GJ earlier today and they both agreed it was in the best interest of both to go separate ways.

Sounds like Cal has reviewed Pilgrim, too.

and that Cal likes Pilgrim. that Pilgrim will fit into the system nicely.

Hope...

so, but as far as KSR is concerned, Jones is just expecting it.

None of this came from Jones.

sounds like it’s occurred this evening though.

Calipari will cast a big shadow over Lexington. He is a class act and the best hire for Kentucky…a great family, a great person, and a great coach. Coach Calipari will vote with his feet and not with his voice…he will put the win/losses on the board. And, the players, assistant coaches, AD will be enhnanced by the wonderful work this man will do at Kentucky. Calipari will bring basketball back to the level of the Rupp/Hall and Pitino Days. And, he will make us long forget Rick Pitino although he did a great job at Kentucky. Calipari has great qualities…family, drive, determination, rise-from-humble-beginnings, love of KY, respect for our tradition, a believer in the heritage, a concern and love for players, personality and charisma. He is triple crown quality. Thank you Coach Calipari for your great belief and respect for the University of Kentucky tradition…no one could restore this image like you will.

Maybe already discussed, but I was curious

Does anyone know why John Wall was not in the McDonald’s All-American game? Obviously a top guy but not in the game??

Asked...

the same thing myself. Someone said that he was a fifth year senior and that made him ineligible. I’m not sure if that is correct or not.

Both Good Players

New coaches often recruit different players.

Vince Yarborough was a “lock” to attend UK in 1998. But there was a coaching change in 1997 first.

He went to Tennessee instead. UK’s new coach landed Tayshaun Prince.
