Scholarships

With the hiring of John Calipari our scholarship situation gets even tighter. The NCAA allows 13 scholarships a year and right now we have 12 on scholarship. The word is, and has been all year, that Williams will either transfer of walk on. I expect that he will transfer because he was getting some good looks from other division 1 schools. That puts us at 11, enough room for Orton and Hood. That still leaves 1 more commitment that we have to make room for, Vilarino. Reading comments from his father like "We'll see if Coach Cal wants us as much as we want UK" makes me wonder if he will actually end up here, but we'll assume that he comes. I believe Porter will move on. Don't get me wrong, I would like to have him back, but he has a lot going for him outside of basketball. Porter will not fit into Cal's system, most likely he would be a 2 year starter now riding the bench. So we'll say he goes and makes room for Vilarino and the last of the 3 UK recruits.
Now we can look at Cal's recruits. I believe Henry ends up at KU, so I'll just try and make room for Wall and Cousins. The first name on our roster that sticks out to me is Harrellson's. Yet another player who stands almost no chance in Cal's offense. It would be a bad deal for him to have to make another move, but it may be worth it to actually get to play. So Harrellson leaves and we now have room for the best point guard in the '09 class. Freeing up another spot may be easier than expected as I'm hearing that Pilgrim may not qualify academically. Let's say he does qualify, would he have to sit out another year if Cal asked him to transfer? A question to the more knowledgable around here. Well, that frees up one more spot for Cousins and would complete a fab 5 recruiting class.
You could go one step further and figure a way to get Henry in if he decides not to attend KU, but who would it be? Patterson, Meeks, and Miller are untouchable and I think Galloway, Liggins, and even Stewart would fit nicely into Cal's system. That leaves Harris and Stevenson, I doubt they're going anywhere until they graduate. The only way that I see us getting Henry is if one of our current recruits opt out or if Cal went after him before Cousins. Of course, this is nothing more than my opinion of what may shake out over the next few weeks. At one time, there was talk of mass defection for this team. Now, I doubt anyone will want out of Lexington. One thing is for sure, we need atleast one player to leave, not counting Williams, and up to four if we want Cal's recruits.

And if you want to see Cal's recruits, they'll be in action tonight on ESPN for the McDonald's All-American game.

It will be interesting drama for the next few weeks to say the least

I agree that Harrelson will be the odd man out one way or the other. Too bad. I like the kid, but he just won’t fit the style of play.

If I had my way, I’d want to keep Villarino. If Wall comes, he’ll be gone the next year anyways… having a kid with a year of experience ready to play is a luxury we would be lucky to have.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

All 13 scholarships are out, not 12.

Matt Pilgrim is on scholarship right now. The fact that he has to serve a year in residence does not affect his eligibility for a scholarship, only his ability to play.

Academics, Fatherhood, Transfers

UK will have room for 2 or 3 Memphis transfers and/or recruits.

you still counting Carter? I keep coming up with 12.

Hrmmm...

On Scholarship for next year

1. Senior Meeks
2. Senior Porter
3. Senior Harris
4. Senior Stevenson
5. Senior Galloway
6. Junior Patterson
7. Junior Stewart
8. Junior Harrelson
9. Soph Pilgrim
10. Soph Miller
11. Soph Liggins
12. Soph Williams
13. Open

That’s your roster for next year without any transfers or incoming freshmen. Obviously, the speculation is that Williams will go off scholarship.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Just my two cents:

It seems very possible that Harrelson, Williams, and Porter are all gone. I still see it very likely that Stewart is gone as well – IF we have Patterson, Orton, Cousins, Harris, Stevenson, and maybe Pilgrim—Where in the world would AJ Stewart find playing time?

So, if Harrelson, Williams, Porter, and Stewart all leave, that opens up 4 plus the 1 that would be open. That’s 5 slots—Orton, Hood, Vilarino, Cousins, Wall.

Harris

Before BCG was let go, after the last mild kick to the head, I could not believe we had not gotten any comment. He has taken too many hits for a young man.

This has ZERO to do with “making room” but more about the health of a great kid.

I don't disagree with that

He was seemingly getting a concussion every game. I really don’t think he ever fully recovered from that collision with Porter back in December.

Same could have been said

about Ramel Bradley a few years back, he had two or three nasty concussions his frosh and sophomore year alone. The thing is, I honestly doubt the physicians at UK would clear a kid to play if they were at all concerned about further brain damage, that is something that is too serious to mess up. In fact, if Harris was still having post concussion symptoms, he wouldn’t even be cleared for physical activity, much less cleared to play.

Harris

I know everyones trying to find room on the roster for recruits, but I think during a coaching transition and all the turmoil over the past several years, there is something to be said for senior leadership. Harris may not be a huge stud like some of the recruits we’re looking at, but he’s one of our more outspoken leaders and has been around for three seasons and a previous coaching change.

by BigBlue87 on Apr 1, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Also

Harris has been responsible for so many “crucial at the moment” plays the past two years. He is a strong defender and in every game there has been at least once when he made a difference making play. Definitely a good “supporting role” player.

"I" am not finding room through Harris

I am just looking at a worry I have for him. The fact that we do now appear to have a belt to loosen is coincidence.

If I was to get down to it and name names on a purge list his would not be on it.

Stewart

I agree on Stewart. I know that Matt over at KSR said that he’s one of the two likely to transfer (along with Williams, who I do think will transfer), but I think that his style of play fits Coach Cal’s style well.

I said when he quit the team that he could be a very good player for another team that plays a different style. Well, I think we are going to be that type of team. I know that he fouled out in only 12 minutes of play at Vandy, but if you watch the second half of that game I think you get a good idea of his potential.

by ben-p on Apr 1, 2009 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, I agree that Stewart could have a lot to offer, and has tons of potential.

If we were somehow lacking in the 4 spot department, we could use Stewart, but the fact of the matter is that’s the spot at which we’re likely to be pretty flush.

Redshirt for GJV?

Is it possible that GJ Vilarino could redshirt one year? Meeks, Patterson, Stevenson, Harris, & Galloway will all be gone after next season (& Wall/Cousins/Orton) could be gone too if they had spectacular years. That would open up several scholarships for the 2010-2011 season.

by CalipariCat on Apr 1, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

You still get a scholly on redshirt

You just don’t burn eligibility.

No help there. Unless you want GJV desperately for the 2013-2014 year. ;-)

add walk ons

CJ Henry (Xavier’s older brother) is currently NOT under scholarship at Memphis…and he has shown a want to play for Coach Cal…he too could walk on after transferring, and sit out the year…but he and his brother want to play together…seems as though that Xavier could also walk on (if he chooses UK over KU)…keep in mind that Henry never had UK in his radar until now, he may be impressed with UK as much or more than KU…plus his family had planned to move to Memphis to watch both sons play; sounds as if he was planning on playing more than just one year…still too early to tell, but it sounds as though the Henry family could pay the bill for both sons for one year till the scholarships open the following year…if Xavier were to jump to the NBA after his rookie season, both points would be moot…

by fincity on Apr 1, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

Doubtful

Sorry, regardless of his family’s financial situation, I do not see Xavier Henry, the #1 overall player in the country, walking on ANYWHERE. His brother, yes, but not Xavier.

if

and certainly it’s a very BIG if…he wants to come to play for Cal at UK and we have no scholarships available…he at least has the resources to walk-on with the understanding that as soon as a scholarship becomes available it’s his…of course…I still feel that CJ Henry’s comments on wanting to follow Calipari to UK could be something to monitor in Xavier’s decision…I personally think he will wind up at Kansas…but I would love to see him in Lex…

rules for going off athletic scholarship

Is it against the rules to agree to place a player on athletic scholarship on academic or need based scholarship and remove him from the team roster (so he or she can finish their degree)? With the money being passed around it would make sense just to find something else for the less than productive players to occupy themselves with. Would such a deal open up athletic schollys since they would not be playing for the team?

by tbd4567 on Apr 1, 2009 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

Need Based Financial Aid = OK

Academic scholarship, must have 3.3 GPA.

No one at UK had 3.3 after `st semester.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 1, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Scholly accounting

1. PPat
2. Meeks
3. Miller
4. Liggins
5. Galloway
6. Harrellson
7. Harriss
8. A.J Stewart
9. Porter
10. Pilgrim
11. Williams
12. Stephenson
13. Orton
14. Hood
15. G.J. Vilarino
16. Wall
17. Cousins
18. Henry

As I count it, there are 18 potential scholly players eligible for next year. Five will have to go away. Three have never been offered at Ky. But, I’m sure would be more than welcome. Thus 5 current players or three current and one or two of the incoming freshmen would have to move off the roster to achieve the result sought. As they used to say on “Laugh In,” “Very Interesting.”

Did...

not know Liggins academics were in question. Shouldn’t be surprised considering the trouble he had just qualifying this year, but still, very dissapointing. I was really hoping for him to return.

by the spork on Apr 1, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

During transition, what is in the best interest of the players, they have to decide.

Those players with two years of eligibility or more, who will not play next year at UK can play elsewhere. Great athletes, like Liggins and Stewart need more time to develop. That time comes with playing at a lower level of competition or they have to really build up their deficiencies now. Ohio State needs a PG and might take a risk on Liggins. Everyone could use a big strong SF if Stewart could develop better ball handling skills. Harrellson, however, is a great kid with a lot of heart but is overmatched by the PFs and Cs of outstanding programs. He would be great at a mid major or DII school where he could muscle inside and shoot the three from the outside. Porter could walk-on and still contribute senior leadership or he could simply go to grad school. Donald Williams never played at this level and therefore may have this year of eligibility left. I believe he two could be a good DII player. If Pilgrim is having academic problems and given the possibility of a MONSTER front court, even a beast like him needs to look at moving on. Again a DII school could help his chance to go to the pros. The choice is to move on or don’t play. This is the tough part of playing in a top notch program. Every year, your position will be challenged by a five star stud.

by Blueobsessed on Apr 1, 2009 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

Hate losing Pilgrim, etc.

Pilgrim is a great all around SF. We could use him next year. I would love to see all 3 of Calipari’s commits or interested come here. I still think that Williams can play. It is probably an academic matter that holds him off the court or possibly discipline.

I have heard on line that Porter is graduating. Could it be true?
Harriss should probably rethink hitting his head again and take a medical redshirt to finish.
Stewart is a problem on and off the court and should find a program that cares.
Liggins has said he will not return-why I don’t know. He changes day to day it seems.
Harrellson has very little upside. I just hate forcing a kid to leave that is trying to comply.
Once again…..“Very Interesting.”

by tbd4567 on Apr 1, 2009 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

Pilgrim...

is a PF, that would be competing with the best at playing time.
Porter will be graduating this semester.
Harris, no need to redshirt to finish, a redshirt is so that you can return the next season without any loss of eligibility.
Stewart, won’t argue that one.
Liggins, where did you here this?
Harrellson has a lot of upside in a much different system than Calipari’s.

Great honest from our new coach. (Paraphrase) "If you can help us win a national championship then I want you, otherwise

I will be honest about whether they can play". GJ, Konner and KC have already decommitted. It is very clear Coach Cal wants Wall, Cousins, Orton and Hood. While he says that he thinks the Memphis recruits should stay at Memphis, I just don’t think they will be able to get the national exposure to be “one and done” and go to the NBA. Henry obviously agrees and will go to Kansas or UK. IMO Pilgrim will only come off the bench, if at all.
