Why John Calipari was the best choice

There is no love affair between John Calipari and Rick Pitino.  If Pitino stays at Louisville, the rivalry with UK is going to kick up like never before.

Star-divide

There is one thing the next best choice; Billy Donovan just doesn’t have that Coach C. has.  That is the desire too just beat the crap out of Rick Pitino in everything they compete at.  It doesn’t matter now whether Coach C. was UK’s first choice (he wasn’t, Billy Donovan was), it only matters that UK gets back to the promise land.  You can bet the powers to be from the NCAA, SEC, ESPN, and CBS are jumping for joy on UK getting John Calipari.

UK Does Pretty Well With Non-1st Choices

Rupp was 2nd choice in 1930.

Pitino was 3rd choice in 1989.

With all seriousness

I am curious what you think happened with Donovan this time.

You were so set in your belief he was coming even after the Grant to Bama went down that I had to admire your “sticktoitiveness.” I’m wondering what your source has to say about how the Donovan “negotiations” played out.

That said, I’m also of the opinion that Cal is the right choice for us right now. Although, the ability to keep my “In Billy We Trust” shirt would have been nice. ;-)

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

It is hard to tell the order of what is being said on line sometimes. After my post Friday right after 5 pm I went to eat. When I came back I had not caught the comments that Grant took the job. When I did see it, I commented that that was that. Like I said that would be the sign. The same process was used with Coach Cal that was used with Donovan. I know that at 9:30 am Friday that it was Billy D’s job if he wanted it. As with Cal, this was done by underlings. If Billy had said yes all hell would of broke out because UK would of asked for permission from Florida to talk to UK.

Calipari was the better hire

I think because he will be a better recruiter in the long hall and is better spoken. Not that Donovon isn’t obviously a good recruiter too but he benefits from the whole warm weather year round thing.

Plus Billy

has won two so you would have to think Coach C is more motivated. Florida schools have always had the weather. Billy is the first one able to get the Florida kids to stay home. There is tons of athIetic talent down here. I remember when I moved here in 1992 and at Christmas the mall was packed with girls in shorts and I called a buddy back in KY and told him they will never be able to get me out of Florida without putting me in a box. I was 34, just think what effect that has on an 18 year old young man.
