This is the official A Sea of Blue open game thread for the Georgia Bulldogs @ Kentucky Wildcats basketball game this evening at Rupp Arena, March 4th @ 8:00 PM.

Particulars of this game are as follows:

Star-divide

Well, there is no more describing the remaining games in terms of "must win" or "huge."  At this point, it may not even matter anymore unless we win the SEC tournament.  Most pundits think UK will be in if it beats Georgia tonight, Florida Saturday and wins a game in the SEC tournament.  That would get UK to 22 wins, and should be enough -- barely.  But drop this one or the next one, and UK would need to get to the finals of the SEC tourney to have any chance at all, and they may still need to win the thing outright to get selected.

Georgia is currently considered the worst team in the SEC, and with the SEC as weak as it is this year, that means they are pretty bad.  Ken Pomeroy currently has the Bulldogs ranked at 211th.  Despite their recent slide, the 'Cats have handled teams of this caliber every time but one - VMI.  To lose this game is to remove all avenues to the NCAA tournament save one.

Things Kentucky needs to do well to win:

  1. Defensive rebound.  We all know its a problem, and it will be a problem against Georgia most likely, unless something changes.
  2. Continue to play hard on defense.  UK played very hard defensively against LSU, and just made a few mistakes that cost them dearly.
  3. Continue to value the ball.  15 turnovers against LSU nearly won that game for us.  If we could lower that by one or two, it would help our cause.

Things that will make it hard for Kentucky to win:

  1. Get behind early.  We lose every game where this happens.
  2. Play like we are afraid to lose.  Nothing will get you beat faster than showing fear.  If the 'Cats get the lead, they need to play smart, but aggressively.
  3. Fail to communicate.  Bad communication cost us the LSU game.

Folks, I swear that if we lose this game, I will go outside and spread myself on the winds like Apollo in the Star Trek Original Series episode Who Mourns for Adonais?  Of course, losing to the worst team in the SEC in Rupp Arena on Senior Day on top of our most recent struggles just might cause Kentucky fans to go mad and march on Lexington with torches and pitchforks, and I'd hate to miss that.  I'm thinking that Gillispie might want want to have an "undisclosed location" mapped out for his own safety in case things go south.

But as I read in a tagline earlier today, there is nothing wrong with Kentucky basketball that a string of wins won't fix.  Tonight would be a nice place to start.

Consider this.

We scored 49 points in this half, probably amongst our largest scoring halves of the year (maybe the most?), and Meeks and Patterson combined for only 13 (10 of those to Patterson).

Maybe this is a new team. We just need to remember how to play defensive a little better.

they certainly moved the ball much better than I remember from the last several games

but they missed 5-6 easy shots inside that had very little to do with the GA defense. If they hit those shots they would be leading comfortably.

7-9 for Georgia on threes

many of those have been wide open and that’s a defensive issue, but a chunk of that is luck. Georgia couldn’t shoot that high in practice if they tried.

I went to the Scott Padgett signing in Louisville and got some great pictures with him, myself, and my two year old. My son was in AWE of how big Padgett was. He was SUCH a nice guy. He even took off his championship ring and offered to let my son play with it.

yeah, he needs to stop driving to the basket when there are 3 defenders hovering around it

drive, but then back it out and reset – get the defense moving. It’s what Georgia has done to UK several times.

Several of the threes GA made came after ill-advised block attempts.

If we’re going to play that strict man-to-man, we gotta stay home and not try to block every long shot the other team takes. “Get a hand in their face” used to be the by-word; now it’s “get on Top Ten with a killer block.”

Just like whats-his-face that’s coming in next year, and all of these stellar basketball gods that have been recruited to play for the BBN. What happens if they get here and they don’t perform? Does that reflect on the player himself or the coach?

You're right, Patterson has performed

I didn’t mean to imply that he hasn’t. But he hasn’t been able to perform to the best of his ability because he’s being hampered somewhat by other teammates. He’s an All-American for a reason, but he’s not a miracle worker.

I will say this, at the beginning of the thread I said that UK needed 3 wins to feel good on Selection Sunday. I still believe that to be true for the most part, but they will need help from a few other bubble teams losing and very few upsets in the 1-bid conferences that have a worthy at large team (like the Horizon League and Butler).
