Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Late Night Open Thread: Talk About the Wildcats

Now that John Calipari is set to be announced as the Kentucky basketball coach tomorrow at 9:30 AM, I'm expecting a few night-owls will want to hoot about it.  That's why I'm opening up yet another thread for everyone who doesn't have to be up at 6:00 AM tomorrow to talk all night long if they like.

A few quick news items:

  • UK commit Jon Hood was named Mr. Basketball of Kentucky today.  Congratulations to Jon, I can't wait to see him in Blue and White next year.
  • Fanhouse says that John Calipari will save Kentucky from itself.  I link this only because I think Jay Mariotti is a simpleton, and I want you to read each sneering, condescending word.  Yes, we made this bed a bit, but perhaps, if things go well, this tune will sound like it was written by a musician with a tin ear in a few years.  Schadenfreude can be beautiful.

So I'll leave you with that, and security in the knowledge that tomorrow, we will introduce our 21st basketball coach.  Hopefully, the introduction of the 22nd will be many years from now, after many more banners dangle from the hallowed halls of Rupp Arena.

by hoboat33 on Mar 31, 2009 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

The national media

Both TV and radio are implying that Cal WILL take at least a player or two.

Talking about a National Championship team.

On sporting news radio and ESPN, they’re all calling this a grand slam.

It sounds like he'll play at Kansas though...

But who knows what Coach Cal can pull out?

(I like being the first to call him “Coach Cal”)

by thefakebillyG on Apr 1, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

i thought it was cousins

who was leaning kansas – don’t tell me it was both of them

by memphis wildcat on Apr 1, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

No, Xavier Henry will look at Kansas

He came down to Memphis and Kansas back when he committed. Kansas is a likely destination for him, but I don’t think he’s leaning anywhere right now.

Cousins is looking at Alabama now with Grant there. He’s wide open, but we’ll be right up there as an option.

Wall was leaning heavily towards Memphis with Duke making a late push. Frankly, I don’t know how he could say no to UK and Calipari. It’s the perfect situation. We have no point guard and his surrounding cast will be great. If Walls is all we add to our current class, then we’re set in my opinion.

by BBallSophist on Apr 1, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly right on Wall....

dribble-drive with PP, Perry, Orton to drop it off inside or Jody, Darius, or Jon Hood on the outside.

We still might not be.

I’m sure Coach Cal sold Memphis as a family, just like most coaches. These kids may be feeling a little betrayed right now.

One of the funniest things I have read all day...from a Dallas Mavericks blog
We’re back baby,‘’ Nowitzki yelled in the locker room before the game against Minnesota. "Kentucky is back on the map.’’

Kentucky, of course, was where Nowitzki was going to attend college had he not bypassed college to go straight from Germany to the NBA.

Of course, the best line came from a Maverick who shall remain unnamed, who said: "Dirk was only at Kentucky long enough to pick up the envelope with the payment inside.’’

Because he is German and can play a good game, but this pretty much makes him my favorite pro player behind Tayshaun and Rajon, and Randolph, Joe, Kelenna, Chuck, you get it, he’s got a long line ahead of him :)

but it is very familiar and we know what to expect. Think about the revenge Billy Clyde will want. Pitino doesn’t want revenge for anything. He’s always been one up on UK. He won with us, left us and is winning again in Louisville. CBCG will feel he owes us something. It could be good, but again, it won’t ever happen.

Yes, MB can go

He screwed up the hiring of BCG and damaged Billy’s career but putting him in an untenable position. It’s Mitch’s bonehead move that didn’t realize the importance of the noncoaching aspects of the job because he doesn’t understand the passion behind KY basketball

guidelines are pretty clear.

give reasons, even if they are only your opinion, behind dislikes. don’t just say someone’s an asshole unless to give reasons

Thanks.

I try to keep my opinions backed up with facts and reasons. I’m not an overly-analytical guru. But I called the firing of BCG back in mid-season…and this blog hated me.

Didn’t matter what the reasons were.

So I just wasn’t sure about the stance of the blog discussing it moving forward.

I’m not mad. Hell, I was one of the one’s at the end of the season that thought we would ditch BCG and go after Donovan, Ford, or Pelphrey. I thought a mid-major coach is the best we could do…

So, I was all about give BCG one more year.

now I’m just mad at Mitch for not doing his job on the front end and putting a good coach in a no-win position. i guess he needed to go and i think even he knows its best for him to go on to another position better suited to his talents. we’ll see him again.

In the presser Cal mentions Mike Pratt then Dr. Todd, nothing about mitch. The powers that be might have just been letting him play in the sandbox talking to Donovan, knowing it wasn’t going to go anywhere.

I'm Sure Mitch Played A Big Role

His best move was not listening to the (blanks) who whispered in ear back in 2007.

Very Happy

I am very happy. I wanted Cal 2 years ago. He will do great things at UK and bring our beloved program back to where it belongs. I am also happy it was hard for Cal to leave Memphis, as this tells me he is emotional and develops strong bonds with the university and town he coaches, which means he will do the same for UK. This will be Cal’s last coaching stop. He will be 10 years or so and I bet win 2 National Championships. I will be happy if next years team just plays hard and HAS FUN. If we get to the second weekend of the tournament I will be happy. The SEC and rest of college b-ball better be scared, as UK is back on its way to the top.

Welcome Cal, we are excited to have you as our coach.

Is there a pep rally tomorrow?

I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!

Matt Jones

said no pep rally. Said John Calipari requested that no pep rally be held. True? I don’t know but that’s what Matt Jones said on KSR.

Wonder why no pep rally?

Respect for Memphis?

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

huh

I hadn’t thought about this. I obviously don’t know what the reason is, but makes sense that you might not want to make the emotionally difficult decision to leave memphis and show up at UK the next day all smiles and tallk about how happy you are to be there.

This Isn't HS Any More

We have an adult professional coaching the Cats now.

Announcement at 9:30.

Coach Cal doesn’t want much of a pep rally right now.

That’s what I read from Matt at KSR on live blog tonight.

No

Press conference at 9:30 am but no rally, actually reports are that Calipari requested that there notbe a pep rally

WOW

I am suprised, but I understand. Tomorrow is a big football day for UK too. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!

It didn't sound like it had anything to do with it...

but that’s a good bonus of the decision.

The football boys have a big class coming in and it’s going to be an exciting football year ’round here.

They all deserve our attention just tomorrow.

I’ll personally be reading up on their stories. I’m excited about football this year.

COACH CALIPARI, SIR

what i prefer to say (as you know since i have posted it many times) is:

IT’S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!!!!!!

by memphis wildcat on Apr 1, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

from a recent article in the memphis paper (comercial appeal) reliving some of cal's finest moments

It is an interesting read, but some highlights are:

Questions from past press conferences:

Q: What do you think about Seth Davis of CBS?

A: He picked the Germans in WWII.

Q: What’s your philosophy in recruiting?

A: We’ll get the kids we’re supposed to get.

Q: What about The Commercial Appeal, John?

A: The only time I see it is when I back over it in my driveway.

And on his rocky start in Memphis (NIT first couple of years…)

Q: Were you always this popular in Memphis?

A: After my first couple years, there were "For Sale" signs in my yard.

Or not. Who knows, at this point, if those "For Sale" signs were reality or metaphor?

Calipari did have his critics. You know how he countered them?

With two words: "The Miserables."

What a brilliant phrase. It’s funny, for one thing. The Miserables. How can you say it and not smile?

But what it did was effectively inoculate Calipari from criticism. Instead of addressing the criticism — instead of taking it seriously — Calipari could label the critics as The Miserables.

He still uses it, too. He used it Monday at his radio show.

"We have no more Miserables around the program," he said, to laughter. "They’re in cracks now, waiting for us to lose games."

by memphis wildcat on Apr 1, 2009 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

memphis I read the "miserables" comment previously

and I thought it was hilarious.

Q: What do you think about Seth Davis of CBS?

A: He picked the Germans in WWII.

hahahahaha!

I would love to see .....

the Magic win the NBA and the Cats win the NCAA with Calipari and see if anyone mentions that Billy D turned both jobs down.

by jpbluekat on Apr 1, 2009 8:01 AM EDT up reply actions

i always worried about the "shady" past

but its really a non-issue. i think everyone that recruits against him (pretty much everybody) would have leaked anything they could to the ncaa. hasn’t happened.

by hoboat33 on Apr 1, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

at one point today, someone said

espn was making the case that it was Cal that turned in Camby……

wouldn’t that be ironic – both that he did and that espn would be the one to pump a uk coach….

by memphis wildcat on Apr 1, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

and everything he’s done the past couple of days has been very professional – talking with Memphis boosters, talking with his assistants and players, the text to Andy Katz, taking serious time to consider, contacting former UK coaches, returning to Memphis for a farewell. Very methodical, considerate and knowledgeable.

by hoboat33 on Apr 1, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

i was thinking of posting the same thing as a test to you fakebilly and give you the chance to shut one of us down……..

:)

by memphis wildcat on Apr 1, 2009 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

i think the spotlight's glare

kept him from his potential. He’s still learning the non-coaching aspects to big time basketball and didn’t have time to grow into the position. That takes more that 2-3 years. Going from UTEP (a step above desert) to TAMU (“there’s no points on that ball”) and then to Kentucky. Too big of a jump.

by hoboat33 on Apr 1, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

yes he has handled this pretty good

he went face to face to some of his biggest boosters – i thought it was to get more money, but it was out of respect. i think they hot boxed him. one story i heard was he went to a booster that was a close friend – told he was leaving and left thinking it was 50/50. i was worried, but since it only dropped to 50/50 figured he would leave.

some of the fans were griping because he snuck out of town tonight, but he had to go to lex first and will be back.

The press conference is being held at 9:30 AM EST? Can we confirm this and does anyone know if ESPN will be airing it? I have worked all night 6 to 6 but I’ll delay bedtime just to see what the new leader at the helm has to say.
