Curious

Any word or speculation on why no announcement yet? It makes me nervous that Calipari wanted to speak with Memphis boosters this afternoon.

My parents are BIG boosters and

they said the same thing that one of these posters said. Calipari is trying to get the Memphis boosters to support the assistant coach and pay him what he’s worth.

Alan - I'm out of Shape - Cutler just reported..

Alan Cutler called Cousins and got a different answer, this was just on TV – someone said here is your scoop, 99.0% and repeated it a few times then the guy who answered Cousin’s phone said, “See you in Lexington.”

This was on the 6pm news lead-in. Apparently he has a new coach to chase down hallways.

What?

…interesting news … but I’m confused. Who said “99%”, Cutler?

And see the post below.

The only signed LOI include provisions that say the recruits can follow the coach.

Sounds as though somebody knew he was out the door to somewhere in a year or two, and wanted to take the spoils with him.

Well, at least he plans ahead.

by tenken on Mar 30, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seems that is being debated.

"Would Calipari be willing to take the job knowing he had to give scholarships to those players? And it’s not such a small number: Dakotah Euton, Vinny Zollo, KC Ross-Miller, Dominique Ferguson and Avery.

Todd backed off earlier comments about honoring those commitments.

"I’ve got to go through that," Todd said on Monday. "That’s something I have thought about and have some concern with."

as for Avery...

I think that is a non-issue. He is so far out that he could easily reassess the situation. Also, he only verballed which isn’t technically a binding contract to either party.

Why would anybody NOT want D Ferg, or even KC?

Those two are no-brainers. The others, well, let’s just suffer through them. We can put a team together with the likes of Cousins, Hood, Pilgrim, Orton, Patterson, and Stevenson, etc.

by Ken Pomeroy on Mar 30, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would like to see...

almost all of them commit. But if we could get John Wall and that causes us to lose tucker or vilarino… I wouldn’t be too unhappy about that. There is the consideration that Wall will only be a one and done…. so I’m not sure how i feel about that though. To have him next year would likely make us better exponentially, but what would we lose the following year when the rest of the team goes to the draft?

For some, that is a horse of a different color (not for me, and I assume not you, either).

by Ken Pomeroy on Mar 30, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not for long-time verbals.

For somebody like Konner Tucker, OK, that was done at the last minute before Gillispie was fired. I think all parties could agree that one could be rescinded under the extenuating circumstances.

But beyond that, I think it would be a serious breach of ethics. The University is (and should be) held to a higher standard than recruits.

We can’t totally lose our soul here. I think they call it INTEGRITY.

by Bluegilla on Mar 30, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My position is this...

If aa representative of the University of Kentucky made a committment to these kids, it should be honored if at all possible. This is not a business decision – this is screwing with a young man’s life.

I didn’t like Pitino running Rod Rhodes off even though it made room for Ron Mercer, who ended up being a big piece to a couple of championship game runs.

Kentucky basketball is better than that.

by jbt36 on Mar 30, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

I am a bit more flexible to the Tucker situation only because it happened in the middle of Gillispie being fired. I would rather them honor it, but if they didn’t, I could live with it.

But for the others, no way should we ever renege on them.

I don’t know what to honor… I don’t think BCG was honoring the commitments to any player on the team – just from the reports of his behavior

if he did mess around w/Legion’s GF and had a gag order in the release to Illini, then who knows what he promised anyone…
but it certainly looked like he was going to start chasing off some people since he had more scholarships promised than available

LOI vs. Verbals

Of course it’s a matter of opinion, but until the letter is signed I believe that all parties have the right to change their mind especially if there is a coaching change. If a letter of intent has been signed, then we honor it.

Anyway, he is afraid, and therefore will act quickly and stupidly as before, and may fail as before…….I think that Calipari is also looking to get out of CUSA, now that LVille and Marquette are no longer in that conf. He doesn’t feel respected because of the conf., and the morons on ESPN and sports media in general, saying that CUSA sucks all the time. Just my 2 cents.

Regarding Memphis Recruits

MEMPHIS COMMERCIAL APPEAL-The mother of one University of Memphis basketball recruit says the letter-of-intent he signed with the school in the fall would allow him to follow John Calipari to another school. The brother of another recruit says no opinion has been formed about the possible departure.

Carol Dennis, the mother of University of Memphis recruit Nolan Dennis, told The Commercial Appeal today that the letter-of-intent her son signed last fall contains an addendum that would allow him to follow Calipari to another school.

Carol Dennis said neither she nor her son had heard from the coaching staff at Memphis about whether Calipari planned on leaving for the University of Kentucky.

Vaught's Views
Sources have confirmed that the University of Kentucky has reached a deal with John Calipari to be the Wildcats’ new basketball coach.
No official announcement is scheduled today according to UK, but sources indicated Calipari will sign a $4 million per year contract anywhere in length from seven to 10 years.
"It looks like eight years is going to be the magic number," said the source.
Kentucky recruit Daniel Orton of Oklahoma has not heard from anyone at UK today about who will replace Billy Gillispie, who was fired Friday. However, his father, Larry, understands that Calipari is the likely choice.

More from Vaught
"Right now Daniel is still going to Kentucky until we get a chance to talk to Calipari," Larry Orton said based on the assumption that Calipari will be UK’s next coach.
Another source in Memphis indicated that Calipari had resigned and The Commercial Appeal, a Memphis newspaper, said Memphis guard C.J. Henry referred to Kentucky as the Notre Dame of basketball when he met with the team this morning.
Kentucky acknowledged this afternoon that it had been given permission to talk to Calipari, who took Memphis to the Final Four last year and lost to Kansas in the title game.

"Then you would have Jodie Meeks and maybe throw in John Wall and Nolan Dennis, who is as good as Wall. You are talking about automatic Final Four."

No Walk-Ons (Costs $20K To $30K At UK)

UK has 13 scholarships. I look for 2 or 3 openings for Memphis recruits and/or transfers.

by kyeric on Mar 30, 2009 7:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Why would he NOT want to play a year under a coach with NBA experience?

And it is clear he wants that NCAA experience as well, of which he has thus far been sadly deprived.

by Ken Pomeroy on Mar 30, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely agree

If Cal comes it would be a good chance for Patrick to:

1. Be coached by a former NBA coach
2. Be coached by a guy who still has connections to the NBA and friends there

by jwnky on Mar 30, 2009 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Patrick in a win-win situation

He’ll either be playing with Cousins, Orton or both … and will have finally have a point guard (all though untested at this level) to distribute the ball …. lots of offense for sure – but we will need defenders and good team chemistry to win a title – whoever has defense to stop Carolina’s potent offense can take the title this year … defense wins championships

That’s 4.375 mil per. Someone else linked to the ESPN report upthread, but I didn’t see anyone having posted the specific number.

Matt Jones tweeted about “around $6 million per year” earlier today, so that’s probably the max with all incentives included.

Pitino used $5,000.00 of his own money to help get Calipari hired at U Mass when he was on the selection committee. He was a huge Calipari fan, claiming Cal was the next Rupp. Of course it turns out that that is something else Pitino was right about.

If I hear “love Kentucky basketball” one more time. Let’s settle this – if Pel or Ford either one comes to UK, while I know they have ties to the school, you can bet your last $ its about the money. They want to make their living same as anyone else. Bring either one of them in here now, and when they bomb (and they would at this stage imho), the split in the BBN would make the Civil War look like a disagreement in a Sunday School Class.

Maybe everyone's trying to stay a step ahead of WHAS...

…after getting “scooped” on the BCG dismissal?

by WildcatFanInDC on Mar 30, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JMHO

but I disagree anyone was scooped by WHAS. I think WHAS just decided to run with the story before they really should have. I think there were lots of sighs of relief at WHAS Friday afternoon when it became clear they were right.
Personally, I think other news people probably had the same sources and the same info but wanted to wait for more official confirmation so as not to risk the “Nu-uh” statement UK issued that night. That made WHAS look bad.
But that’s just my opinion.

by AthKat on Mar 30, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, they went out on a limb a bit

It seemed to me that WHAS decided they had solid enough info to report that BCG would be presented with a choice of resigning or being fired, hence their report that he “will not be the coach next year” followed by UK’s statement that “he has not been fired.” Both could be correct under that scenario.

Transfer rules

Who else agrees that the NCAA should adjust its transfer rules so that players who are already on scholarship (like UK’s current players) can go somewhere else without sitting out a year if the coach leaves or gets fired?

the rule

This transfer rule prevents college basketball from being like the NBA. Some players would jump ship to ship. I think there needs to be clarification for extraordinary circumstances like coaching change, probation, etc

But is it fair that Cal could come to UK and bring some recruits to play right away...

Or at UK…if one of the incoming recruits wants to go somewhere else and the school agrees to let him go, he can play somewhere else this coming season. But no one currently on the roster can.

Not really

People can switch schools whenever they want, if the new school will let them in.

I’m not in favor of anyone being able to transfer and play immediately anytime they want. But if the coach leaves or gets canned, I think that should be an exception.

by WildcatFanInDC on Mar 30, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Never has been and never will be.

The closest that they come to that is most schools will let a player out of an LOI. But the transfer rule always applies unless there is something like a family illness or other such justification.

The school has the option to hold them to it, but aside from wanting to meet the new coach first, they pretty much always let the players go if they want to. No reason to treat players already on scholarship any differently.

That’s why Dickie V got pissed off about Tubby, since he thought UK had treated him unfairly. But he’ll sing the praises of whoever comes in next, which he did with BCG and certainly will with Calipari.

Wilbon also got on his high horse because of Tubby and now because of BCG (whom he and Tony both like a lot and had on PTI several times). But even just today on PTI, Wilbon said that Calipari would likely be able to get UK back to the Final Four within two years. He’ll go on sweating Cal no matter what happens from here on out.

For those who say Calipari hates Pitino, here is a Cal quotation:

“I would rather not play Rick Pitino unless it was the very last game for both of us. The reason is I owe him a lot. I’m very grateful for the opportunity he’s given me and my family. You don’t want to play great friends unless it’s the last game for both teams. We have to do this, so we’re going to play. Between now and game time before it ends, he’s the other coach. When the game ends I’ll hug him, win or lose, and tell him how much I appreciate what he’s done for me and my family. But until then we’re both going after the jugular.”

There are reports that at least two members of Calipari’s top-rated recruiting class for next season, who have verbally committed to Memphis but have not signed letters of intent, may also follow him to Kentucky. That’s not how Cal wants to start his job here. This is something everyone needs to approach as long term. So what if we miss out on a few all-americans this year to do the honorable thing and honor the school’s commitment to incoming players. I’m planning on seeing Cal bring in plenty of talent in the next few years, long after the incoming freshman this year have flopped or did there one year and entered the draft.

Room can be made if the situation is handled correctly......

the new coaches need to evaluate the players. Do they have video of practices? Talk to each player about his realistic expectations of seeing playing time. Offer help in finding a school where he can contribute. I think some would rather move on than sit on the bench with the perception that he was taking the space of a better player. Poerter could possibly become a graduate assistant if he has aspirations of coaching someday. He would surely have a wealth of first-hand knowledge of what works and doesn’t work. I think accomodations will be reached.

I think chances are lot better with CAL than with BG

It will not be easy … I think BG didn’t really consider how hard it would be to win on the road in the SEC. For example at Vanderbilt, with the coaches placed on the end lines (how stupid -BTW) … BG thought oh what the heck .. I think CAL will pay more attention to detail .. but still it will take time to win on the road in the SEC. For me just say I like chance with CAL much better than with BCG>

Great news!

My wife’s best friend’s co-worker’s minister has a rich donor friend from Lexington (who knows Rick Pitino by the way) who has a neighbor who just saw a private plane flying over Kentucky that appeared to be ready to land at the Bluegrass International Airport arriving from from the southwest direction of Memphis.

This is it people – next year, Final Four.

Coach Cal would be great – best of luck. (It is pretty exciting when a new coach is coming in.)

Football

My expectations are set high enough with our football team. I can see Morgan Newton passing to Chris Matthews for a 50 yard TD against the Gators while im typing this. We have a ridiculous schedule though.

It is official

John Calipari is our head coach and he is bringing two current players with him. This is confirmed by LEX18. Here is the link!: http://www.lex18.com/Global/story.asp?S=10096463. Article also says two recruits will likely follow. Those are Demarcus Cousins and John Wall!

Nah ...

… he just has a period in the link. Cut and paste all but the period at the end in your browser, it’s there.

Hmm.

This makes no sense. There is no room for transfers, unless they are going to pay their own way or some of our commitments are decomitting.

I’m not buying it.

16 Now

Tucker verbal won’t be honored. Williams goes off scholarship as planned. That’s 14.

Stewart, Harrellson transfer. That’s 12. Porter becomes Dad and gets on with his life. Now 11.

2 spots. Patterson +/- Meeks to NBA. Maybe 3 or 4 spots.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 30, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Patterson and Meeks will be right here

This will be a great opportunity to “show what they’ve got” to the NBA scouts.

That was pretty good BR7 and im watching google earth right now looking at the Memphis AD office doors Cal just walked out those doors and if i can read lips he said “look out Ky here me and my all americans come”

by danial on Mar 30, 2009 10:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That's actually a really good point

His recruiting class that he could bring with him to the Big Blue is just incredible on paper.

by BR7 on Mar 30, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where are we going to get the scholarships?

If we had maybe one or two schollies available, I could see it. But we are two over the limit right now.

How are we going to find room for 19 players with 13 schollies?

Color me skeptical.

incredible “just on paper” or “just incredible” on paper?

I’m saying yes to both. Not getting to hyped about a kid who hasn’t touched the NCAA court yet. I’m glad it looks like we are getting a big name coach and a proven recruiter, kinda worried about the trouble that seems to creep up everywhere he goes but as a Cat fan I’m excited.

What I’ve seen of his incoming class is impressive, not willing to give up anymore of the programs dignity to get them by yanking scholarships from kids though. If he can pull 2 of the top 5-6 possibly 3 of the top 10 seniors to Memphis I’m looking forward to see what he does here for sure.

Barnhart's House Party

My uncle lives next door to Mitch Barnhart (in Heartland Estates) and he just said there are about 12 cars outside of Barnhart’s house. While he stoped short of saying Calipari is there, he was sure he saw Lee Todd and CM Newton. Could this be the ultimate UK boosters pep rally?

by catman3 on Mar 30, 2009 10:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lemme google earth that

yep house party confirmed over barnharts. Cal is there . They have a Billy D pinuetta and strippers

here is the latest i am hearing down hear

in his meeting with the supporter – apparently Fred Smith (fedex founder) was there.

Cal may have gone to campaign for Barbee, but they put the hard course press on him – made it more than about money – made it about civic pride and the positive impact he has had on memphis.

it apparently has given him pause but he is still leaning Uk – personally, i think so much water has gone under the bridge, he has to come.

just sounds like some of the memphis boosters have not given up….

OH NO

A suv with texas tags just rode into the house party with some dude chasing it on foot! omg its billy g demanding 6 million dollars! he just shoved barnhart in a bathroom stall and told Todd that he was walking back to the hotel if he didnt get his money

If...

…Cal signs with us, I don’t think it matters if he brings in his recruits this year or not. The Cats will still be good in 2 or 3 years regardless. I still believe we have a good team if we just add a pt. guard and another low post threat. Villarino and Orton appear to fill this need.

Interesting question....

when they fly him into Lexington, will be be able to track the flight? Found a web site that allows people to track flights online.

I'm ex-USAF SPACE COMMAND

I guess I could round a few folks at NORAD to track him for me…If he is as hot as we all seem to think he is, maybe we can get a heat signature on the DSP satellite’s I used to fly.
