Open Thread: Is Calipari to Kentucky a Done Deal?
Memphis sports broadcaster George Lapides says that Calipari is headed to UK in his opinion. This is not a rumor, it is a very well-informed opinion.
Talk, talk, talk.

Why are we rushing?
Not to say that I’m against Calipari, or that I have a favorite in this race…
But why are we rushing this monumental decision? We rushed the last one, closed on BCG in practically no time, and look how it ended. If we had taken even a few more days or a couple weeks, perhaps the admin. could have discovered that BCG wouldn’t fit here (their reasoning for firing him, not mine).
This coaching decision can make or break UK basketball. We have been on a downward slope over the last decade. Why rush this decision? I know their are other schools looking for coaches, and each day we don’t have a new coach is another day that we aren’t recruiting or coaching or promoting the program.
Why the rush?

I have to agree too.
I think at the least, the Barnhart and/or Todd were putting the feelers out there after the loss to Georiga at home, or at least immediately following the post Ole Miss comments. I have nothing to back this, just my opinion, but I’m thinking the feelers were probably out to Donovan and Cal immediately.

Last Point..
Is the most important.
“each day we don’t have a new coach is another day that we aren’t recruiting or coaching or promoting the program”
That is why the seat MUST be filled quickly.
Frankly, I don’t for a second believe they just started the search Friday afternoon.

About the Rush
Unlike the Gillispie hire, Calipari is a largely known quantity who would require less vetting so moving quickly is more understandable in this situation. However, I will admit that some have questioned whether UK can provide proper oversight of his recruiting and that requires some due diligence.

But I just can’t see what Izzo’s incentive to leave a program where he enjoys unparalleled success is. He owns his conference and has a great recruiting base.

Either way, Izzo would be a great coach, but if Cal is on board right now, no reason in my opinion to hold back. The soonest we would know anything from Izzo is next weekend, and by then Cal might give it up.

Sorry if this has been posted already....I haven't been able to read the everything yet
University of Memphis coach John Calipari met with his players this morning to discuss his involvement with the University of Kentucky opening, according to a source close to the situation.
While Calipari did not say explicitly what he planned to do, players left the meeting convinced that Calipari would take the job. According to the source, Calipari told the team that Kentucky was the Notre Dame of basketball.

If Calipari actually comes to UK then the recruiting shakeup in the next couple of weeks could end up with UK having one of it’s best recruiting classes ever. Nah. They won't fall apart.
They will not be nearly as good, but they will get a very good coach there. Cal has shown that it is possible to compete on the highest level there.

I have a very good college friend that was raised in Memphis, but his mom’s family is from Kentucky. He now lives in Memphis again, and his loyalties have been somewhat split over the years, but leaning towards Memphis. I can’t imagine the confusion of someone who is a big fan Memphis but a sort-of fan of UK.

But I think the program and all of us will keep him in line, because his behavior will only FIT IN with what we all expect. There should be enough people already involved in the basketball program (i.e boosters)to provide oversight.

Well, I’m afraid Kentucky is about to get it right. None of the rest of us in the SEC cared too much when Gillispie was hired. But Cal has the chance to change things completely in this conference. For the rest of us, it’s a scary hire.
