ESPN's Dana O'Neil and Pat Forde's sources are reporting to them that Memphis head coach John Calipari is expressing interest in the UK opening.

Reportedly, Kentucky officials have been "gathering information on Calipari over the weekend."

Was my number 1 post two years ago too and everyone was screaming, dirty, evil, satan, but he knows how to play the AAU circuit and recruit players. Something UK has been very poor at for a decade.

Yeah...

its always good to add a little something to a rivalry. It would add a little to the UL rivalry as well.

Leverage?

It’s possible that he is making it look like he has interest to get a better deal from Memphis.

I really hope he isn’t because I believe if he has any interest at all, he is ours.

That's always a possibility with these guys, but he makes a ton, and has made millions ...

… over the last 11 years or so.

In other words: I don’t think that he would do that.

Wow...

unless this guy just wants to come to UK and coach in a power conference we are going to have to throw some big numbers at him. This article says that he is already making over 2.3 million at Memphis and well over 3 if you count the annuity. It also notes that Memphis is working on an extension that will “significantly increase Calipari’s total package.” I have no doubt though that if we want him and he wants us, money will not be an issue.

by the spork on Mar 30, 2009 1:15 AM EDT reply actions

Calipari

The only reason Cal would come here is to coach at the University of Kentucky — In other words: He has it made at Memphis — Total job security, plenty of “green,” the top recruits, very little pressure, etc, etc.

Just like Donovan.

The difference is that Cal wants it, in the same way that Pitino wanted it. If he truly wants the job, it’s because of the prestige of the position, and the fact that winning at UK, is unlike winning ANYWHERE else.

Logically he should never leave Memphis, but some of those types of guys don’t think logically. They want more, and they want to be challenged.

Every one of Cal’s jobs have been reclamation projects – UMass, the Nets, and Memphis were all down when he took over. Hey, 2 outta 3 ain’t bad.

Regarding Calipari's coaching

The offense he uses seems to be made for elite penetrating point guards — (PG does all the decision making – spread the 4 players out, center inside. PG drives then either dishes to the center, kicks out, or layup)

given that the college game relies heavily on guards, that is probably good.

The only problem is that he is not the sort of coach who makes adjustments well (i felt tubby was one of the bet in the game at this) Calipari also doesn’t run offensive sets – (for example, plays coming out of a timeout – that Billy G excelled in)

I’m not saying that this is bad, just that it is a completely different style than what we have been use to for a long time and that we should keep that in mind.

Just a little info from games i have seen / stuff i have read / etc.

by schizm42 on Mar 30, 2009 1:24 AM EDT reply actions

Yes.

The “Memphis Attack” relies greatly on a pg that is proficient at penetrating.

He’s only been running the “Memphis Attack” offense for a few years. If he didn’t have the personnel to run that type of offense, then he wouldn’t.

I agree,

I think that if UK wnats him bad enough, money will not be an issue, although there is still that little issue of the 6 million that we “owe” BCG. But at this time, Cal is my number one. I think that Izzo gets less and less of a reality as their team goes on. I agree wuth most that Ford and Pelph are a bit too inexperienced at this stage in the game.

Let's not put the cart before the horse folks...

…Even if Calipari meets with UK, there are a lot of hurdles…

Recruiting restrictions & In house fighting are but 2…

This may be a case where UK says, “We want you, but these are the rules” and Calipari says, “I want to come, but not by those rules”..?? The what..??

We need to let this play out 1st… 1 or 2 (I’m guessing Lee & Sandy), may try to block this…

Arkansas's troubles didn't occur due to Pel

It was due to the lack of players. Simple. You can’t coach what you don’t have.

I’ve read that Cal has been given almost free reign at Memphis. I would guess that it would be hard for him to follow a guy like Barnhart.

Memphis polls

I like how the polls in those stories have turned around over weekend, suggesting now that more people think he’s headed for the SEC instead of staying at Memphis.

It had been strongly in Memphis’ favor. I guess all of the UK Cal supporters have been hijacking their polls.

Cal could bring the magic back

If Cal comes to kentucky and can bring John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins with him, watch out. Kentucky will be really really good. I read that Wall may have signed with Duke tonight though.

If Cal does come and he brings recruits with him of that stature, i guess we’d have to cancel some of our previous recruits offers. Especially the ones that people werent so thrilled with in the first place.

We were highly upset because of what it would do to our sports. We did not want to be rivals. But we had 2200 students from tenth to twelve grade so they had to do something. We begged them to just make a bigger school. They wouldn’t. We even(my class) petitioned the board and everything. It was tough. Very tough and I still really resent that they did it.
