ESPN Report: Mutual interest between Calipari and UK
ESPN's Dana O'Neil and Pat Forde's sources are reporting to them that Memphis head coach John Calipari is expressing interest in the UK opening.
Reportedly, Kentucky officials have been "gathering information on Calipari over the weekend."

Leverage?
It’s possible that he is making it look like he has interest to get a better deal from Memphis.
I really hope he isn’t because I believe if he has any interest at all, he is ours.
That's always a possibility with these guys, but he makes a ton, and has made millions ...
… over the last 11 years or so.
In other words: I don’t think that he would do that.

I was watching the Oklahoma (Courtney Paris is a load!) vs. Pitt women's game.
I jumped off the couch and started surfing.

Wow...
unless this guy just wants to come to UK and coach in a power conference we are going to have to throw some big numbers at him. This article says that he is already making over 2.3 million at Memphis and well over 3 if you count the annuity. It also notes that Memphis is working on an extension that will “significantly increase Calipari’s total package.” I have no doubt though that if we want him and he wants us, money will not be an issue.
Calipari
The only reason Cal would come here is to coach at the University of Kentucky — In other words: He has it made at Memphis — Total job security, plenty of “green,” the top recruits, very little pressure, etc, etc.
Just like Donovan.
The difference is that Cal wants it, in the same way that Pitino wanted it. If he truly wants the job, it’s because of the prestige of the position, and the fact that winning at UK, is unlike winning ANYWHERE else.
Logically he should never leave Memphis, but some of those types of guys don’t think logically. They want more, and they want to be challenged.
Every one of Cal’s jobs have been reclamation projects – UMass, the Nets, and Memphis were all down when he took over. Hey, 2 outta 3 ain’t bad.
No offense, but why?
He didn’t do very well with a talented Arkansas team. . .
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.
--O.W.
Regarding Calipari's coaching
The offense he uses seems to be made for elite penetrating point guards — (PG does all the decision making – spread the 4 players out, center inside. PG drives then either dishes to the center, kicks out, or layup)
given that the college game relies heavily on guards, that is probably good.
The only problem is that he is not the sort of coach who makes adjustments well (i felt tubby was one of the bet in the game at this) Calipari also doesn’t run offensive sets – (for example, plays coming out of a timeout – that Billy G excelled in)
I’m not saying that this is bad, just that it is a completely different style than what we have been use to for a long time and that we should keep that in mind.
Just a little info from games i have seen / stuff i have read / etc.
Yes.
The “Memphis Attack” relies greatly on a pg that is proficient at penetrating.
He’s only been running the “Memphis Attack” offense for a few years. If he didn’t have the personnel to run that type of offense, then he wouldn’t.
Not Sure!
They talked to a young lady at BCG presser that sounded like Tink. Also they taked to Ligions mother and she said she could tell a LOT.
The...
pieces here at ASOB are usually much better than anything in the Lexington Herald or the Courier Journal.
I wasn't looking for compliments ...
… but I think I can speak for Tru when I say, thanks, your kind words are appreciated.
I agree,
I think that if UK wnats him bad enough, money will not be an issue, although there is still that little issue of the 6 million that we “owe” BCG. But at this time, Cal is my number one. I think that Izzo gets less and less of a reality as their team goes on. I agree wuth most that Ford and Pelph are a bit too inexperienced at this stage in the game.
Can UK take a change on waiting for Izzo,
…and passing on Calipari..???
If they pass, wait for Izzo and Izzo says “no thank you”, Mitch would be screwed…
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
Let's not put the cart before the horse folks...
…Even if Calipari meets with UK, there are a lot of hurdles…
Recruiting restrictions & In house fighting are but 2…
This may be a case where UK says, “We want you, but these are the rules” and Calipari says, “I want to come, but not by those rules”..?? The what..??
We need to let this play out 1st… 1 or 2 (I’m guessing Lee & Sandy), may try to block this…
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
I want Pel I want Pel I want Pel
and Vince I am deeply disappointed that you did not include Pel in your poll…..typical arrogant Steelers fan :)
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
He's not ready...
…And that proved out this year at Arkansas..
I do believe that one day in the future, Pel or Ford will be at UK, but now is way too soon… sorry
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
well in all honesty
as much as I love him…….I would hate for him to come under scrutiny here. I love him too much for that to happen. I would honestly kick some major butt if anyone talked bad about him.
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
oh
and one thing that people need to realize about Arkansas is that THEY ARE YOUNG!!!!! Very young. I think the youngest team in the league. They did beat Texas and Okie. Next year though he will bring them some better results.
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
Arkansas's troubles didn't occur due to Pel
It was due to the lack of players. Simple. You can’t coach what you don’t have.
I’ve read that Cal has been given almost free reign at Memphis. I would guess that it would be hard for him to follow a guy like Barnhart.

Memphis polls
I like how the polls in those stories have turned around over weekend, suggesting now that more people think he’s headed for the SEC instead of staying at Memphis.
It had been strongly in Memphis’ favor. I guess all of the UK Cal supporters have been hijacking their polls.

no nothing at all
wasn’t trying to show negative……..just sharing :). But I do think that Geoff Caulkins would love to see him go……..its a rather dicey relationship. Cal has nailed him to the wall before on the news. But I must say I am not a Geoff Caulkins fan at all. Cannot stand him

Cal could bring the magic back
If Cal comes to kentucky and can bring John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins with him, watch out. Kentucky will be really really good. I read that Wall may have signed with Duke tonight though.
If Cal does come and he brings recruits with him of that stature, i guess we’d have to cancel some of our previous recruits offers. Especially the ones that people werent so thrilled with in the first place.

Like I said
yesterday……..I heard that if Cal comes with his recruits……….then we are an automatic top five team. I cannot remember who said that but I think it was Wetzel from Yahoo sports.

I played
ball at Laurel County High School for one year and a half year at that. I moved to TN. I played in the juinor high before then. We didn’t play varsity until tenth grade then. Well unless we were really good and I WAS REALLY BAD :)
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
I was
not on the team come tourney time……I had moved to Tennessee. I know that we played Marshall when I was alot younger. Marshall was always as dirty word in our county :). It was the only Western County in Kentucky that I knew about:). We won the tourney when I was in eleventh grade but again I was in Tennessee so I am not sure who we played.
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
because
they were so good …….and dominant. I just remember hearing how good they were….but you know I just looked up something and you know what school holds the most girls tourney titles? Laurel County……..I knew we won alot but had NO IDEA that we won more then anyone else
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
yep
but I think it was in my early days……Pulaski kept beating us in Regionals alot when I was older. So they were our main rivals
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
Yes I have seen that
Howard Beth from the “Lady Marshals” is winningest coach in women’s ball in state.
which
of course……my class was the last graduating class of Laurel County High School. They told us my sophomore year that we would be splitting. We were highly upset because of what it would do to our sports. We did not want to be rivals. But we had 2200 students from tenth to twelve grade so they had to do something. We begged them to just make a bigger school. They wouldn’t. We even(my class) petitioned the board and everything. It was tough. Very tough and I still really resent that they did it.

Nice. I am sure there will be reports
that a small private plane landed near Mt. Sterling-check that with Calipari it would be more like a 747 on I 75 near Griffin Gate.

I’ve lived here for 5 years. Originally from Lex, but I’ve lived all over KY.
are you
close to Bowling Green? I cannot remember where Warren County is

oh
yall got some bad storms there. We also get Nashville news here and I saw some tornado warnings around there yesterday. Glad you are ok
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
I say
its good to put them together……Laurel County used to be four schools…London, Hazel Green, Bush and Lily. We became a dominant sports force in southeast Ky because they made one school. When you split them up ……..north laurel and south laurel……not so dominant any longer and most of the schools around us were still one high school. I have strong feelings towards my Laurel County but heck I cannot even find a Laurel County high school on facebook…….its south laurel. It really stinks.

John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins
Yeah . . .those guys are so good. especially Wall. You Tube is awesome.
Wall is incredible!

IF Cal is interested ...
… then Barnhart MUST close the deal.
As you note, his job is on the line here.
I have no idea what Pratt thinks of Cal, but I’m betting he likes him as UK’s next coach.
But of course, we’re still very early in this thing, and lots of things could go wrong.
mitch, mitch, mitch. Heaven help him

Proceed with Caution
This time, both parties need to have a clear understanding of what each expects from the other.
If Calipari does speak with UK then it just goes to show you
that you can never take what a coach says as 100% gospel when they say they wouldn’t be interested in a particular job. Even if he turns UK down, just by speaking with them shows at least some interest.
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
very true
I watched Cal on Friday. I get Memphis news and of course they are all buzzing. But anyway, one of the newscasters said that his body language was not convincing to him. I thought he was overanalyzing and I guess he wasn’t. One thing I don’t understand though is why some are saying he is fishing for money. His pay raise was JUST last year and 2.3 isn’t too shabby. I think maybe he really might be interested.

stop
trying to make me want Cal……….please :)
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
i’ve been fighting it all day, but I think Calipari is the best coach considering that he’s probably most likely to leave his current job.
Everybody else we’ve been mentioning (A-listers) seems like a long shot to land of them. And Villanova’s coach sounds like hell be trying out the NBA before he tries another college prgram.
Im not sure if I will like the personality of the players that cal would bring in, so I’m with you there, but I am ready to dominate again.

This IS getting really interesting
Never thought it would happen, but now think there is actually a good possibility that Cal will be our next coach.
Please make it happen, Mitch.
GBB!!!
Does anyone remember..
how Ray Mears used to hate U K ..and their karote defense…
Just woke up.....
and my intense dislike for the UK b-ball situation my heal a tad with this info!!!
Of all the coaches UK could pick
Calipari would be the jackpot.
Never coached at an elite school, but look what he did at UMass, Memphis……give him an opportunity at UK and the possibilities are limitless.
Bracket threadjack
My bracket went from 7 out of 8 Elite Eight teams. . . to 0 out of 4 Final Four teams.
EPIC FAIL!!

The King is dead! Long live the King!
All you need is a Final Four of
Louisville, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, and Missouri
Sad thing is, my wife, who does not follow sports at all and picks her teams based on where her friends/co-workers attended, has a perfect Final Four and is leading her pool.
I couldn’t pick my nose with two hands and a map. . .
The King is dead! Who is the King?
I know what
you mean…all final four teams gone! I really didn’t go out on a limb but I had Okie, UofL, Duke, and Memphis
