Our next coach..? Vote here

Just for fun, I thought I would see who BBN would prefer our next coach to be...

This is just some of the names I've been hearing...

Hopefully we will have a coach before April 1st, so I have put that as our deadline...

If for some reason the coach you want is not one of the options, feel free to list him/her in the comments sections with reason why...

After you vote, please explain why you would want that coach...

Have fun...!

Izzo gets my vote...

…because he is a proven winner, well liked my his players and the media…
His style is methodical, but the results are tremendous…
he would probably retire at UK…

He's no slouch at recruiting either

I would still like an ex-NBA coach, but of the current college coaches, Izzo gets my vote hands down.

Amen

I agree 100%, I love Tom Izzo, and he sure showed Ricky P. a thing or two. Class act and clean program, what more could you ask for? Of course the Tubby bashers would cry about his slow style.

Calipari

He is probably alongside of Roy Williams as the best recruiter in the country. He plays an exciting brand of ball. He is proven winner.. He would embrace the “ambassador” role. These are my main reasons.

Calipari

Said this in a previous post, but…….

He’s had amazing success at UMass and Memphis (not considered elite schools)

Just IMAGINE what he could do here at UK (elite program, winningest team). The success would be huge and fast.

I get so excited just thinking about it!!

I like both

Cal and Izzo, but I prefer Cal for the same reasons as SevenRings.

Maybe by the time Cal brings UK back, then Ford or Pelphrey will be ready :-)

Actually

Joe Crawford got drafted as well…he was like one of the last picks in the second round though…wouldn’t he be considered one of Tubby’s even though Billy G had him his last year??

Would anyone even consider Travis Ford if he did not play basketball at UK? I think he makes no sense at all at this point in his career.

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Calipari

He has proven that he can win at a high level at schools without a lot of tradition. He is a great recruiter and he has the potential to immediately and dramatically improve our roster next year if he brings John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, and/or Xavier Henry (if he seeks out and is granted a release from his LOI) in addition to our current class. He has an exciting brand of basketball (dribble drive motion offense) and he is a big name that would unite the vast majority of the fanbase and would prove to the national pundits that UK is STILL an elite program and one of the best coaching jobs in the country, despite our recent struggles.

He is the grand slam, can’t miss hire. The only negative is his alleged associations with “shady” recruiting practices and violations at former schools.

by BBallSophist on Mar 29, 2009 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

Everyone Keeps Bragging About Calipari

How many NCAA Championships does he have? With that question, what makes him the home run again?

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry, should have went further

Just saying, if we are going to consider someone as a home run, should they have actually at least won the championship. The only one in this group is Tom Izzo, I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

He was a few missed free throws and a last second shot away from winning one last season....

Roy WIlliams never won a national championship before going to UNC….that worked out well

Slower Traffic Keep Right!

by SevenRings on Mar 29, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't doubt

that he would come in and win games and bring in good recruits, but would it be good enough if we had went to the tourney 8 out of the next 10 years, but didn’t win the championship…would he last longer than Tubby??

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

We Need To

have someone higher up call Roy Williams and ask them how the hail UNC drew him away from Kansas and then we may be able to throw that same pitch to a Roy Williams calibur guy, even though there aren’t many in the same category.

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Roy Williams attended and played basketball at UNC

He studied under Dean Smith.

You don’t seem to know a lot about college basketball.

by BBallSophist on Mar 29, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

What??

does that have anything to do with wanting to get paid and enjoying the program?? If that is the case, then Travis Ford and John Pelphrey is perfect for our job……and yes I knew that, don’t see the relevance when it comes to getting paid because isn’t that what this is all about?

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Are we

still so unrealistic as fans to think that someone will actually want to come because it is Kentucky….NO, they will come because of the money, unless it is a Travis Ford, John Pelphrey…Even Billy G was getting about 2.3 million a year and he wasn’t really anybody b4 landing the UK job.

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

No...

You asked how UNC drew him away from Kansas. The reason he was drawn away from Kansas was because he was emotionally attached to the school. North Carolina was the only school Roy Williams would have left Kansas for. It was his alma mater. The money was going to come regardless. It wasn’t about money.

Kentucky doesn’t have a Roy Williams. There is no UK alumnus out there who currently has the same amount of experience and success at coaching that Roy Williams had when he left for UNC. Ford and Pelphrey are no where near the level that Roy Williams was at when he left Kansas for UNC.

You’re all over the place, and I really don’t have a clue what agenda you are trying to push. You don’t seem to want anyone to be the coach at Kentucky and you went from talking about championships won to talking about Roy Williams to talking about money and somehow connecting the Roy Williams situation with Billy Donovan (who was an assistant coach at UK. He isn’t an alumnus).

by BBallSophist on Mar 29, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

My Point

is that everyone wants to throw out numbers and wins and losses all the time….What the heck does it really matter how many wins and losses a coach has?? It’s all about desire, passion, good recruiting, and more. I understand Billy D isn’t an alumnus, but has connections to UK

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I would much rather

go out and take the High School coach at Laurel County and give him a job rather then coke zero someone else from a high-profile school…imo

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Just to win

is that what we are about…just winning?

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe

in the philosophy that we should look for a coach by their abilities (proven or unproven), their desire, passion, good recruiting skills, etc rather than by their status quo.

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

And Yes

I kind of went all over the place with this…I just happened to be thinking about the Roy Williams thing and my thoughts kind of went all over the page

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

And for this

statement, if this was the case in all of B-ball…we would already have Billy Donovan coaching us.

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh

and before you start question someones understanding of CBB, maybe you should take a step back and understand the question before making such allegations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Tubby Smith never won one either before coming to UK

Neither did Pitino before he came.

Bill Self didn’t have one before he went to Kansas.

Tom Crean doesn’t have one, and he’s coaching at Indiana.

I think it’s silly to think that the choice MUST have a national championship under their belt. I would prefer someone with AT LEAST one Final Four appearance, though.

by BBallSophist on Mar 29, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

We had the same

Kind of success (after his 1st year) with Tubby Smith, meaning, making the tournament, going deep, and of course, winning a lot of games each year, etc. but the impression is that we pressured him out of town. So, if Tubby wasn’t good enough, then why is Calipari? Are we so desperate?

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

No One Pressured Him

He changed jobs. The impression, however persistent, is inaccurate.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 30, 2009 6:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

but, if we are going to throw that out there, then we just put Calipari in the same boat as Ford, Pelphrey, Miller, Barnes, Matta and none of them seem to be the right fit according to fans. Also, yes I know Billy D won 2 championships with FL…didn’t feel the need to mention him in this conversation because I think he is a foul ball.

by kbb on Mar 29, 2009 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Calipari would be a rock star here..!!

..If ASOB is any indication, this is the home run Mitch needs to hit…

The Second Coming of Pitino

I agree with Vince…Cal would be a rock star at UK, and he could hire Porter and Stevenson to be his roadies…although Stevenson would probably drop the equipment and Porter would probabaly give it to the wrong band!

Hey she's back

And I agree about Calipari. He’s definitely an aggressive, dominant, and charismatic person, and those traits will serve him well. His best quality is his ability to deal with what he called “The Miserables” at Memphis. Because we have them in the Kentucky fanbase in droves. I am looking forward to see him manhandle them more than anything.

PITTS Jamie Dixon

I like the PITT coach, he seems to have followed right along in Howlands shoes.

by UKFANZ on Mar 30, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

of course...

Pat Riley is the only “alumnus” with hefty coaching credentials…and Ricky P giving his endorsement of “UK should have hired him in 2007” was too funny for words…

just because a coach doesn’t have an NCAA championship under his belt doesn’t mean he isn’t the right fit for the job at that particular time (as I felt Tubby was the right fit then in 98 and that Billy G. wasn’t…he was riding the “hot coach” at the time and really hadn’t proved anything over a lengthy period…and we got bit in the arse over that one) Calipari’s ego/coaching ability/recruiting ability/schmoozing ability is what this program needs right now…in fact…it’s what we needed in 2007…had that happened then, we would be talking of our recruiting class being the best of all time…but water under the bridge…take him now and let the blue-chips fall where they may…

UK will take it’s deserved place once again in the Championship winner’s circle in the not too distant future…I hope Calipari stays for 20 + years and retires here…
