Pitino...

Should Barnhart give make him an offer?

Why not ask?

If I were Barnhart, I would. If he said “No,” (which he will), I would just cross his name off and move on.

Coaching Carousel......

Marc Maggard is claiming a victory…(of sorts)…KSR is stating that according to the sources they trust most that its already almost done….no one has been even close so far to being right…..have we become the Oakland Raiders of the college basketball world….Pitino is supposedly influencing everyone in coaching about NOT taking the position…what has happened to Paradise…..have we become some second rate program controlled by poor management and a psycho fan base???…..I am beginning to believe the media….

however I believe he is the least likely person to come to UK of all the names people have mentioned. I see no way he would make the move at this point.

Not At All (Ken Howlett Will Verify This)

UK AD Larry Ivy refused to grant Tubby an extension to his original 5 year contract in 2001 and encouraged him to seek the South Carolina job. USC offered Tubby $2 million (per) but Tubby and Donna decided at the very last minute to say No Thanks.

Ivy had Pitino waiting in the wings to replace him. I won’t go into more detail but there’s more to it.

Tubby wasn’t in a solid situation at UK except in 1998 and 2003. Only those 2 years, no others.

Hard To Say

Pitino was 200-73 in the last 8 years (2002 thru 09) at Louisville.

UK wasn’t very satisfied with 200-70 (Tubby’s record) in the 8 years from 2000 thru 07.

P was 219-50 in his 8 years at UK.

by sgray62 on Mar 29, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

This aint C-USA

this is the SEC I don’t think he could bring in the recruits like he is now simply because in the SEC you have schools to compete with for conference wins.In C-USA well do I really need to go there…?Think about your a top 5 recruit and Memphis offers you a scholorship pretty much your in the NCAA tournament if you play a few “good” teams in non-conference play. That won’t happen at UK you have to play UL and UNC about every year, not counting this year, but also have good teams in conference.

by yearofthecat on Mar 29, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

UK is an elite program

With a LONG history of success.

Great players want to come to UK, UNC, UCLA, Duke (i call them Puke) because they are elite programs and they’ll have a chance at winning a NC if they come to any of those schools. UK already has it going for them that they are an elite program. Now we just need a great recruiter to reel them in

by uk1982 on Mar 29, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

This makes no sense.

The fact that Kentucky is in the SEC, plays against better competition and is on television constantly is beneficial to Kentucky recruiting, not detrimental. Cal will recruit just as well, if not better, if he came to UK.

Sandy Bell...

would have very little impact on Calipari. He works through influences beyond the university’s control. And he is very dangerous in my opinion. He would likely win huge here, but we would be a continuing target of ridicule. And I can’t hlp but believe this WWWes stuff is going to eventually be his downfall.

He can’t recruit the type of players here as he has at Memphis, his graduation rate is abysmal – the guy just scares the living hell out of me.

by jbt36 on Mar 29, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

according to his bio he has 12 of his 15 Memphis players have degrees
Since he took over in 2000, 12 of 15 Calipari players have earned their degrees, and two others, Anferenee Hardaway and Marcus Moody, came back to graduate during Calipari’s tenure. And, it hasn’t stopped there.

Calipari, with the help of the University, has asked several former players to come back and earn their degrees. Some of the beloved Tigers from the 1980s such as Bobby Parks and Andre Turner are taking Calipari up on his offer. Prior to Calipari arriving at Memphis, the basketball graduation rate was zero.

by jbt36 on Mar 29, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

According to NCAA stats on graduation rates...

from 2003-2007, the University of Memphis men’s basketball program was in the 50th percentile among Division 1 programs.

UK was in the 20th percentile during that same time. I am also searching for information on incoming freshmen SAT scores, etc. That is probably going to take some time.

If it turns out that his graduation rate is better than that, I will retract my earlier statement, but according to the NCAA he has been middle of the road at best.

I can point you to several areas of concern.

Not the least of which is the controversial situation with DeJuan Wagner. There have been numerous minor violations that he has been a part of, and numerous highly suspicious incidents which did not draw an investigation but could have.

He needs a very tight reign. But he could win huge here.

Other things mentioned and not mentioned in that article is that he is from the same hometown as Stephen A. Smith of ESPN fame and they are supposedly quite friendly these days which made me think twice when I saw him mention the Calipari to UK this morning as they are only 3 years apart. He was Dennis Rodman’s quasi prompter during the 90s if you remember most of those escapades and has befriended lots of up and coming NBA stars as a mover and shaker.

I’m all for Calipari at UK – we want to win and he has yet to actually be convicted of anything serious… Unlike Pitno. We’ve had our own shady history for a very long time but it was a booster package that finally got us busted. I would hope the administration would be the controlling moral authority if the self-righteous face they have been presenting the last week is more than an upper class disdain.

Calipari is the best name on the list

I agree with the Hoopville article that we can’t expect a big name coach willing to quit a cemented job to come here. I know that this is KENTUCKY. But let’s be realistic about what Kentucky is these days.

1. We have had 2 coaches in 2 years.
2. Any coach that comes here can expect intense pressure from the administration, fans and boosters.
3. We are no longer the first pick for the best high school players. Kids are looking at where they get the best exposure to make it to the NBA and/or a good education.
4. As I have said before, parity is evening the line in college basketball.

“And then comes PARITY to ruin the party. It’s a really simple formula. The talent out there has risen so that even non-elite colleges are getting chances at great players. How did Stephen Curry get to Davidson past UK, UNC, Duke, Florida, etc.? How does Gonzago become a national name so quickly? PARITY…”

We can posture all we want about we are Kentucky. But the real deal is we are just another school trying to recruit players. And any coach coming here does not have guaranteed players or a guaranteed position.

Whether or not is was justifiable, we have been made an embarrassment in the public across the US. The national media picked up BCG’s situation and ran with it for weeks. So this pick better be right.

So, where does that leave us? I see a lot of people clamoring for Calipari. He’s probably the biggest name on the list that is realistic. Ford? I would love to have Travis here in 4-5 years if is record keeps up. Not now though (as much as that pains me to say it). I don’t want to see a divorce with Travis in 2-3 years later when boosters or fans won’t give him time to build the program and then we part ways with an idol from Ky.

We need someone who comes hitting the ground running. Calipari does that. He has some questions with him but not proven. And he wins and does well with the press. God knows that will buy him a few years to recruit and get it all going.

by jwnky on Mar 29, 2009 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

I agree.

Thats why I think BCG should have got another year. No big name coach is going to want to come knowing they only have 2 years to get to a Final Four or they will be fired.

by stephensmith on Mar 29, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking back

While I fought against the BCG firing initially, when you start looking back at the history of the last 2 years. BCG did himself no favors with fans or the media. Throw that on top of everything else and the writing was on the wall.

by jwnky on Mar 29, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but...

You’re paying the man millions of dollars… Just because he didn’t write a book and kiss babies, like Pitino did, doesn’t mean he should be fired.

by stephensmith on Mar 29, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

When you are the coach at Kentucky

You win games. But you also don’t tell reporters their questions are stupid on national television and you don’t tell the entire nation that being an ambassador is not in your job description on national TV. As a UK coach, you are representing UK and all of Kentucky.

Any big name coaching job in America requires that you be able to both coach and deal with the media and public. Wasn’t BCG’s style I guess. I love the coach but the image was starting to wear.

by jwnky on Mar 29, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe the real point is

that it seemed clear the players HATED Gillispie. I was watching Izzo coaching his players this morning and when he scolded them they actually looked like they were listening. Haven’t seen that from a UK player all year. They looked too scared/pissed off to absorb anything BCG was saying.

no doubt

I believe it is just not that hard to get the PR side of it right. Almost every coach in every sport gets it right for the most part. What troubles me most about our most recent coach is the things I am hearing about how he treated players. If some of that stuff is true, it is much more unforgivable IMO. I am not going to repeat them but it is out there if you look around.

spork

I know you are from Marion County if I remember right.

I am too but have been in Campbellsville for 31 years. Travis was the coach at CU at one time. Many of my friends saw him up close and personal and he can be very arrogant and has a very dirty mouth, even coaching at a Baptist Univ.

He married a gal from here, a Doctor’s daughter. I am sure he would love to get back to KY., but now is not the time IMO.

My Ex Agrees

She went to High School with him. We met at UK while Travis was playing at UK. Anytime anybody said how much they liked T. Ford she would go on a rant about what an absolute ass he was. Arrogant, self centered, and mean was the gist…..but she is my ex…. So take that for what its worth :)

by sylvar on Mar 29, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

I’m not defending Ford or anything. I just wanted to know what the “Burned Bridges Incident” was. I don’t really want Ford as the next coach, but I don’t think it will be an absolute catastrophe if we have to settle for him.

but with the Calapari chatter in the last 24 hours one thing is for sure. The Coach at UNC,Kansas,UCLA are going nowhere anytime soon. When the Kentucky job opens, and your name is on the list,it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. When Pitino mentioned Pelphrey and Ford as suitable candiates for the job,I can READ between the lines.

I don't know

why they keep going after Donovan. That guy doesn’t seem to be as good as everyone thinks he is. He has two titles and doesn’t seem to be recruiting. Pitino isn’t as good as he thinks he is. I think they need a young, fresh guy, but after the BCG gamble, they won’t do it. My guess is they’ll push hard for Calipari, he’d thrive comparing himself to Pitino, UK still has bigger guns than the ’ville, but the coaching at UofL has been better than UK since Pitino took the job. No offense to Tubby.

Tubby was 200-70 this decade at UK.

Tubby

by Byron on Mar 29, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

What about the shady stuff?

He’s first on my list too – TRU says he’ll bring NCAA probation with him others say he’s shady, I’m familiar with his past but, I haven’t heard about anything bad going on at memphis … I feel like talent drops way off after him – offer him the farm … or a farm (horse)

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 29, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Really what??

I think with UK fan base and support he could excel here moreso than at memphis- maybe he could see himself getting to the FF regularly… no need to be shady at UK …. we have to be able to compete for talent with the UNC’s and UCLA’s – I don’t see to many other coaches giving us that competitive edge …

by ukcris on Mar 29, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

if Pitino

came to UK (he won’t) and we keep Patterson and Meeks, he can talk Orton and Hood into staying. That’s a pretty solid roster. That’s actually what I’m most worried about.

Pitino Has 1 FF In 8 Years

Crum had 2 NC and 6 FF in 30 years.

Pitino has done a VERY GOOD job, not great.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 29, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

How much of that 40 do you think

goes back to how the program had slipped while being non-conference?? I think some of The Ville’s struggles have been directly related to joining conference play….especially since the Big East deal

Remember, were having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on Mar 29, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to discount

what Crum did, but it was a lot easier to go the Final Four in the 70s in a 25 or 32-team tournament than it is today. Only once did Crum get to the Final Four in a 64 team tournament.

by DoubleB on Mar 29, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It was tougher to get INTO the tournament then.

personal opinion

but i feel crum at his peak > pitino

pitino currently > crum in his last few years

by schizm42 on Mar 29, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Tough depended on conference

If you were in the ACC it was tough. If you were in the MVC it wasn’t so tough. Crum went 46-8 in his first 4 years there. He then went 49-8 in his first few years in the Metro. They were the dominant team of both conferences in the pre-64 team tournament.

Once they got in the tournament it was like having teams seeded 1-4 and then teams seeded 13-16. There were no at-large bids.

As an example, in 1972 Louisville beat Southwest Louisiana and Kansas State to advance to the Final Four. Not exactly a murderer’s row of teams.

Make it easier to track. I know Ken already did a breakdown, but you could go more in depth, like listing NBA players, etc.

UNC

Hansbrough NCAAT career:

Freshman: 2nd round loss to George Mason (God bless the Patriots)
Sophomore: Elite 8 loss to Georgetown
Junior: FF loss to Kansas

After their loss last year, I joked with some friends that this rate, UNC would lose in the Championship game this season. I think UConn will likely make that a reality, though I’m not giving up on ’Nova just yet.

Don't forget

The new ESPN contract goes into effect for the SEC next season. How many Memphis games were on national TV? EVERY game Cal coached here would be on national tv.

That makes a huge difference in resources available to him.

NCAAT wins list

CBS has been showing a graphic during UNC games in the tournament with the leaders in all-time wins in tournament play. It has UK listed at 98 with UNC just winning their 100th game today. But in other places I’ve looked (for instance: here) UK already has 100 wins (there are some other differences as well). Does anyone know why there would be a discrepancy?

Calipari

Here’s some food for thought:
“In spring of 2006 he considered leaving for North Carolina State. He decided to stay, but let’s be honest, N.C. State isn’t Kentucky.”
" Memphis hasn’t lost a conference game in three years and doesn’t appear to be letting up any time soon."
Finally a chance for CAL to prove himself with the big boys … his recruits are coming because of him … it’s his style of play … he can sell UK easier than Memphis
Hope we don’t wind up with some coach who’s trying to get out of a football school

by ukcris on Mar 29, 2009 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

As I said earlier...

why leave a school that has no competition in conference play and go to one that does. The only way he will leave Memphis is if Memphis went to the Big East or ACC but I wouldn’t want a coach to come in that case, shows that he is running away from real competition.Heck if thats all we need is a coach that can win…any votes for Pat Summit?

by yearofthecat on Mar 29, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

We all want more.

I think a fundamental part of being human is the desire to leave a legacy that will last well beyond your lifetime. When it comes time to compare legacies, I think I can safely say that a UK legacy in the basketball world would be greater than a Memphis legacy if all else were equal. Say Calipari stayed forever, long enough for them to name a building or court after him and hung 2 or 3 more banners. Say he did the same at Memphis. Which in the realm of basketball legacies would be considered better? I know my answer.

by ukcris on Mar 29, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to disagree. Courtesy, in my opinion, would be to

help former players with a private phone call or a letter of reference. To give his “two cents” in the newspaper on the next UK hire is not the University of Louisville Head Basketball Coach’s concern.

After all UK and U of L compete at least once a year, at times we compete for the same recruits and then there was the defection to the NBA and a return to Louisville.

by blue oregon on Mar 29, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

the reason RP has 'commented' is his fear

of competition from big bro. he knows if calipari/izzo were to come the pitino years at UK would be past. cal would out recruit and dominate the KY landscape for years to come and the ego couldn’t handle it…he fears another ‘man possessed’ article by SI.

This whole Cal thing……….are we really going to go with a guy that has a problem with the press yet AGAIN? I don’t think they will go that way. I really really don’t. Calipari is a jerk yall. Memphis Wildcat please back me up on this. I cannot believe that my fellow Cat fans want this guy over Pelphrey. Maybe I am to sentimental but I want someone here who truly cares and truly understands what I feel for my Cats. I felt this way about Pitino and Tubby. I felt like they really didn’t get it. I got so ticked off at Pitino going after yankee boys(sorry NYC Cat) instead of southern boys who understood about Kentucky basketball. Tubby the same thing. I think that is one of the things I did like about BCG. He seemed to understand us better then any coach since Joe B Hall. He has more Kentucky boys then I have seen in awhile(albeit walkons but still). I know I am going to get “fortied” on this but its just the way I feel.

I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!

by tenken on Mar 30, 2009 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

me too.....

Pitino is great coach, but some of his recruits don’t care for anything but the I in TEAM nowadays. ( cough, cough.* ) That is a lot of why they just got beat today. They don’t shoot that good and never did, but they made up for it w/great D and passing a lot to the post, but they reverted to “playground ball” and “superstar ball” again today and were beaten, when they could have Won the whole shootin’ match. They have been playing the best ball of any team for about the last 3 weeks. What happened? They don’t have guys w/heart, but guys who all try to impress the Pro scouts. (T.Will ).

That is what is Wrong about Pitino and Calipari and Izzo. Too many McDonalds inner city Americans, and not enough “Unforgettables”. That is what Pitino has forgotten. That, more than anything else, is why we loved him to begin with. A state needs to feel its team and know them. When you bring in imports who call us small towners and hillbillys, talking about how much they hate rural KY life, and then they stink, Expect a backlash, where we will still love our Own somewhat> This is the nature of family. I always love the players individually, but they should appreciate an opportunity that rural KY kids would almost DIE for! I would have eaten bread and water for a year to play at KY, but I’m from KY! I suspect I’m not alone………

I don’t know how many of you saw the special on foxsports a few years ago but it was about the unforgettables and each one of them spoke about everything. Pel was the best at it and I could just picture him in the livingroom telling this story of some all american.

I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!

by tenken on Mar 30, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

BUT.....Pitino was a NObody when he came here..........

So, doesn’t that prove that a good coach is a good coach? I like watching Ford and Pelphrey’s teams compete. They coach very much like Rick does. Pelphrey’s defense is a mirror image.

HOWEVER, …….The BEST choice is another KY boy, and a Lexington native, AND a proven winner…….. (( DARRIN HORN )) . Just LOOK at his coaching and recruiting resume. He is already a proven winner. His old team (W. KY) lost a tough game to Gonzaga, which would have put them in the Sweet 16 2 yrs. in a row, quite a feat for a small conf. school! He was Great at SC this year, and his stock is only going to rise. He just has to be pushed hard for anyone at UK to take notice. Ky may live to regret not going after him, as they have to play him twice every year now at SC.

Really?

More of a mistake than West Texas Billy G.? Also, why (now)? What is the problem with now? A guy can either coach or he can’t. He either has integrity or he doesn’t.

Example : Mark Few of Gonzaga.

He won’t be there in Small conference, can’t get a REF call to save him- misery forever……

What about MARK FEW ? , for that matter.

i don’t count the loss to UNC, the other day. The referees ended that game before it began. UNC got took 30 free throws to Gonzaga’s 13 free throws! What a joke! I watched that game, and you couldn’t even breath hard on UNC’s players without drawing out the “paid-for” whistle! UNC was up nearly 20 w/5:00 left in first half. JOKE! Refs. ruin basketball….

by REFs ruin BBall on Mar 30, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Wrong.

Pitino took Providence to the FF and was the coach of the New York Knicks. Hardly a nobody.

by jbt36 on Mar 30, 2009 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

i stand corrected, .....but.....

you have to admit that his past performances, in light of them, couldn’t fortell what he would eventually do in his KY tenure…….a tenure which will put him Consistently in the ranks of the coaching elite, right up there with the Knights and K’s, etc…..This could not be extrapolated from Providence and the Knicks. I’ve been watching UK a long time too. I remember the Sutton years. It hardly made news when Pitino was hired, BECAUSE we didn’t fully realize his capability. Therefore, in my humble opinion, relatively speaking, he was an unknown.
