Gillispie Era Over at UK
ESPN, multiple local sources reporting Billy Gillispie will not be back as the coach at Kentucky.
The Herald-Leader reporting an 18-minute meeting took place between Gillispie, UK President Lee Todd and others at the President's mansion on campus, after which Gillispie was seen getting into a vehicle with Texas A&M tags and leaving.

Lookin' good
I didn’t mind Gillispie to be honest, but man, if we can for sure land Donovan, we’ve gotta do it. Of course the media is already making fun of us saying we’re Notre Dame and that we should have kept Tubby. Still Not Official But ...
if true, it’s gotta be really hard on the players having to go through 2 coaching changes in 3 years. I feel bad for Coach G too.

I hope
the person driving the truck that dropped off and picked up Billy was a lovely and sweet woman, who cares even more about him than Tinkerbell does, and who treats him with tender loving care for the next few days. I would hate for him to be alone. I think Coach Billy Clyde give it a hell of a try under very difficult circumstances and for that he deserves our respect.
Yeah, wow Orestes. Sheesh.

Maybe there is a lot more to the “off court” stuff than we ever wanted to believe.
The Heart & Mind of the Big Blue Nation ...
Doubt it.
I’m guessing it’s just referred to as “on- and off-the-court issues,” and no further detail is given.
One way to avoid getting into the whole buyout mess is just for UK to offer him something less than the $6 million ($2 or $3 maybe), and everyone sign confidentiality clauses, no one talks about it again.

Don't shed any tears for Billy G...
I too, wanted him to stay. But six million dollars can cure any heartache he might be having….
I'm sure not
I work for KCTCS and was just told in a meeting that we won’t have so much as a cost of living increase for the 3rd straight year. The idea that they’re going to pay him 6 million after the royal mess he made of things makes me sick.
True, but ...

coach was just to introverted for this job. His stubborness and personality was just too much for UK. He did this to himself. I think he is a decent coach but UK was way out of his league. Go big blue and good luck to G and god willing we will get D.
wow crazy day
Dont know quite how I feel BUT it’s a lot less bitter than the Tubby departure. From the sounds of things it looks like we have a better shot at keeping Meeks for another season providing he likes the new coach.

I don’t think this split has anything to do with coaching or x’s and o’s I see a coach that was unwilling to do what was expected as the head coach of the greatest basketball programs of all time. His job was much more than coaching. Media skills just added fuel to the fire. " I am who I am" only goes so far. Also blame goes to the search committee unless he just lied to them about who he was and what he was willing to do off-court.

I’m an optimist and I hoped everything would work out, but if in fact Billy Donovan is the new head coach that is going to be hard for me to adjust to – too much time spent rooting against the Gators, too much time laughing at the year-after-year underachieving with supposedly top players.

That's not the point
Billy Donovan’s track record is of someone who brings in highly regarded players and 7 times out of 10 either fails to get past the first weekend of the NCAA tournament or fails to make the tournament all together. He’s not likely to get better players at UK than he was getting at Florida and there’s no reason to think he’s going to become a better coach either.
Could he get the right combination and make a run at a FF? Sure. But all the other times we can look forward to first/second round exits or NIT appearances.

Right now...
I think the important thing to remember is that the media loves him. We need a shot of good PR right now more than we need an immediate return to the Final Four.
Besides… we now need a coach. Who else you gonna go after?
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
agreed.
the coaches at Duke, UNC, and KU aren’t going anywhere, and who else could you confidently say is prepared to take the reins at Kentucky (oh, yeah, that guy in L’ville) but besides him, being Kentucky’s coach is like being President of the US. It's an interesting question
Would you have taken Florida’s run since 2000 (3 final game appearances, 2 NCs, but also a lot of NIT) over ours?
I probably would, but I could see how others would disagree. . .
Fire Barnhart (and publicly flog Todd, but he can stay, I guess)
Yes yes I would take it....2 NC's would alleviate 2 NIT's
I think the NIT should never happen at UK but if they were after 2 NC’s, I would less angry
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
This is something I've often pondered
I think I would prefer the lower variance of what UK did during 00’s over the high variance of Florida.
It’s not like UK was just plodding along this decade – we had one of the all-time great teams that came a sprain away from a NC. The 2003-04 team was good as was the 04-05 team. The 2001-2002 squad wasn’t that bad either. I’ll take that consistency over the “who knows?” of Florida.

Exactly true
There’s no right answer – to each his own taste.
Fire Barnhart (and publicly flog Todd, but he can stay, I guess)
A lot of this, for me, is based on experiences with teams in other sports
I’m particularly sensitive to the role that randomness/luck plays in the outcome of a sporting event. Contrary to popular belief, the best team doesn’t always win and players are not in complete control of the outcome of a game.
The ball bounces one way and team A wins, it bounces the other way and team B wins. The best you can do is to mitigate that effect as much as possible.

I'm in Alabama and hearing
that the reason it took so long was to confirm with Billy Donovan that he will resign and come to UK. IF this is true, we should be excited. LETS GO CATS!

Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Per the link.....take it for what you will
A source close to the University of Kentucky athletic program tells Fox 35 Sports that Billy Donovan will resign as Florida Gators’ head basketball coach to take the same position at Kentucky.
The University of Kentucky has called a 4:30PM press conference in which the school is expected to announce the firing of head basketball coach Billy Gillispie. Kentucky has reportedly waited until a replacement coach is in place before letting go of Gillispie, who spent two seasons in Lexington.
Donovan led the Gators to back-to-back NCAA men’s basketball championships in 2006 and 2007. After the ’07 championship, Donovan agreed to become the head coach of the Orlando Magic, but changed his mind a few days later and returned to Gainesville.
The Gators have not made the NCAA tournament in either of the past two seasons.

Sucks
- Really thought Gillispie would succeed at Kentucky. I actually would love to see him in Houston and get Penders outta there. He has the Texas connections to succeed, and his grating personality would be fine at a place where they don’t care about basketball…at least, not until Phi Slamma Jamma comes back into town.
- Not sure why people are hating on Donovan. Show me another coach who’s got two national championships (or even one) that would remotely sniff Kentucky right now, and I’ll give you a dollar. Donovan would be a great hire.
- Keep your hands off Rick Barnes, please! You know I love Kentucky, but Barnes has a great thing going at Texas. We’re talking championship potential.

The Orlando station says Donovan is going to UK, but I spent 22.5 years growing up in Orlando and I can tell you it’s not the best source.
The St. Pete Times says Donovan’s father told them that Billy D is at his vacation home in Crescent Beach and not in Kentucky.
Pick which one you want to believe, but as a Floridian (and not the part that’s a Gator fan) I would put more faith in the St. Pete Times than Fox 35 Orlando.
I never trust the local Fox affiliate for news
But that may just be because WDRB out of Louisville always seems like the generic bastard child of the Louisville news teams.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
What
I really want to know is this..do they think we really believe that a decision was made in eighteen minutes?
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
Remember last time we were looking for a coach?
we talked about Donovan, Rick Barnes, Mike Bray… and I forgot who else, but Billy Gillispie was a surprise to me, and to a few other fans, too, I think. Maybe the plan is a name none of us are even considering….
surely they won't......
make the same mistake? again……i definitely think the hire will be someone that has been mentioned, just not sure who.
Billy D Vs Ricky P
As if the confrontation didn’t already have enough to boost it. Could be UL vs UK rises to match UNC vs Duke. Wish Donovan could bring Kenny Boynton with him…that would cure many ills.
That's what I had hoped for when UofL hired Pitino
We were ranked #1 at the time and I thought it was just a matter of time before a historic match-up between the two…
And I was right! Just a year or two later, the teams met up for the first time ever when neither team was ranked! :-(
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
We are already
noted for being the biggest OOC rivalry in the nation. Unless we play in the same conference, I doubt we will ever get the press that UNC-Duke gets.
You know... if we go after Calipari...
John Wall is still uncommitted but was considering Kentucky before leaning towards Memphis…
Sounds like the best of both worlds to me!
;-)
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
maybe billy d can get him
unfortunately, evans had a good game in memphis’s loss last night so he will be gone and clear the way for Wall

Good question.
I think that’s a pressing question that deserves to be answered. Hard to know if Barnhart was just doing Todd’s bidding.

Florida coach Billy Donovan will not be a candidate for the Kentucky job or any jobs that come open.
"In response to the rumors circulating about my interest in other jobs, I wanted to address this as quickly as possible," Donovan said in a statement. “I am committed to the University of Florida and look forward to continuing to build our program here.”

I'll go ahead and write it.
The biggest issue for ciriticism at this point is Todd’s firm opinion (noticed he took the lead here and not Barnhart) and position that the MOU is a year-to-year agreement. I am no lawyer, but this is simply unfair and they will look bad taking this position. Arguments will get down in the dirt and it won’t be pretty. They are basically telling Billy to leave and shove it. Bad.

Really? Okay, if it was, why the need to answer?
Just defer and say it is being negotiated privately.

You have not said one thing positive about this whole presser....
you have nitpicked everything from body language to the actual words…..did they do anything right
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Yea. A couple of things:
1. It was necessary and good that both made the presser side by side.
2. It was good that Todd verbally and strongly supported Barnhart
3. They made it clear where the coaching recruiting stood.
4. I liked their position of considering the students first and foremost.
…to name more than a couple. Feel better now?
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
...I still say Todd's body language sucked.
I thought Barnhart looked much stronger (after he got done reading the formal letter) and better than Todd.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
...and they kept on saying it and saying it.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
Well,
I am a lawyer, and he really has no choice BUT to take that position right now. Saying otherwise would be an admission that it IS binding, and would kill their chances to fight it later if it comes to that. He had to say what he said, and I’m SURE UK’s lawyers told him to say exactly that.

I can tell you that the law is not as clear-cut as you think on this issue. Anyway, UK has a lot more money that BG. Makes a big difference when contemplating litigation. Even Todd’s position is ultimately undefendable, they could still fight it out for years in court. Especially in KY. Gillispie’s lawyer will likely tell him to make a deal for quite a bit less than 6m IMO.

My Two Cents Worth
I am much saddened by the events as they transpired this year with the culmination today. I didn’t always agree with Gillispie’s coaching or his stubborness bordering on arrogance but I was still sad and worried about the direction of our program under his guidance.
Donovan is out. That is official from WKYT. I would like to throw a name out there that not many people are talking about and that is Sean Miller of Xavier. Look what he’s done with that program. He was a point guard at Pitt, a major basketball school. He’s young and energetic and the UK job would definitely be a step up for him. What do the rest of you think?
UK could do worse....
I like Miller but he wouldn’t be one of my first choices. However if they are unable to land those mentioned many times before Miller isn’t a bad choice.
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
That's a name I think should be included in the discussion.
I like the way his teams play. I just wonder if he is ready to handle the pressure cooker that is UK basketball.

I am so tired of dealing with this crap. Billy D said no, Cal said no, who’s next?? If we hire Horn or Ford I am done. I will not put up with this anymore. I was at the Notre Dame game and those kids played their butts off. They deserve better than this.
Just look at a possibility of what could happen…
PPat gone
Meeks gone
Pilgrim gone
Liggins gone
Orton gone
GJ gone
Ferguson from LN is a stud I have seen that team play and they would give UK a run for it
Thats SEVEN…how long would we set back this program if this happens?
Sadly we are the laughing stock of the country today.
Overreacting ...
… based on Meeks’s father’s comments, I would argue the opposite is true. I think Meeks was more likely to turn pro WITH Gillispie back.
Pilgrim ain’t going anywhere. Dude sat out a year from HAMPTON to come to UK. He’s staying. Liggins hated coach Gillispie.
Orton is a big one, and whomever the coach is will need to try and save that one. GJ could follow Gillispie, but he’s hardly a 5-star can’t miss, even if underrated.
Ferguson is a tougher call. We gotta keep him away from his buddies at Louisville. The assistants leaving could be troublesome there.
The Heart & Mind of the Big Blue Nation ...
GJ's father was quoted (by audio)....
that he has been a Wildcat at heart for the last 2 years and it would be hard to imagine him going anywhere else.
So I think he probably honors his commitment….of course the new coach could always change that expectation.

I have to believe that if negotiations were going on, Donovan would have the intelligence not to put a quote out there that will be thrown in his face like a Saban or a Petrino.

What transpired with
me since last night. I will not spread rumors. Last night I was out at a function with let us say a very well connected person with the college sports programs in the state of Florida. I told him this, in my opinion it makes perfect since for Billy Donovan to go to UK and I believe he is going. We sat and watched the NCAA games and the conversation covered my thoughts. Let me explain something about Florida basketball, NOBODY GIVES A CRAP DOWN HERE. Billy Donovan can win five National Championships and they still won’t care and the person I was talking to knows it, I know it, millions of Gator fans know it and Billy Donovan knows it. The Gators don’t want to admit it though. That’s why it was always hard to build basketball programs down here. The support is all football. I know tons of Gator fans but the only one I saw at the SEC Championship Tournament was the one I invited. I had never been to a SEC Tournament and was amazed at how important it was for UK to be successful for the tournament to be successful. Thursday at the tournament it was a Sea Of Blue. I was so happy to be around all of these UK fans. I stayed on a boat that was docked dead center behind the Marriot, which for anybody knows that was there it was the center activity. I am a people person and talked to many fans. All disappointed fans and fans that seemed on edge. (I stopped writing this at this point because I decided to contact a direct source and he just called me back and this is when I made my first post today. Now it is 6:00.)
At this point .. .
… I am so bewildered, I am ready to believe anything, especially good things. I refuse to spend the weekend in a depression.
The Heart & Mind of the Big Blue Nation ...
I'm sure comments by Meeks dad and the ones about Jasper still
rehabing his knee are typical and other payers will have similar stories…then piss off some boosters and tell your boss what your job is and that he can shove it … yeah he’s hardcore alright … whereever he winds up at they’ll probably win the NC with him.

Dick Vitale was pretty fair with UK on Sportscenter....
basically saying BCG may not have been a good fit and hurt himself by not embracing the entire job beyond coaching. He also said the the AD or search committee should be held accountable for the hiring. He mentioned that outside of Pitino the only coaches he feels can handle the enormity of the job are Calipiari and Barnes. Just to summarize. Digger pretty much talked winning and losing only….figures.
Slower Traffic Keep Right!

also said Knight, with Travis Ford as an assistant who would be groomed as successor in 4 to 5 years (Sportscenter).

So this man
told me he would make a call to somebody that talks to Billy everyday in the morning and let me know if he new anything. I know the man he said. At 9:30 I had not heard anything so I called the guy he mentioned to me. I know the guy well because I support his causes. He opened up totally about everything on BD not taking the UK job before and what happened in Orlando with the Magic. And he told me what I revealed earlier today.
no way.....mainly because of his age
he would not be a long term solution and has been largely irrelevant as a coach for years. Silly to think he would even be considered.

I openingly told
my Gator freinds today what I know. I told them my source and they were shocked that I knew this guy that well. They didn’t say much. We came in from the golf course to collect my money and I got the voicemail from my source that at 5:03 PM today that there were negotiations going on between UK and BD. I played the voicemail and there hearts dropped. But here is the deal, most of these Gator fans don’t care. Some said, so what. Others asked why.
With what I do know,
I don’t believe BD would even negotiate with UK or vice versus if Mrs. Donovan had not signed off on this.
I might be smoking
but I am not pulling chains here. There is no other place for BD in college basketball other than UK and he is way above Florida basketball. He cannot go to the NBA because of the release with the Magic. That was for 5 years and Dick Gabriel might be wrong about having the notion that Billy wanted the LEAGUE.
BD to my knowledge
has not turned down the job. As of 5:00 they were in negotiations. I would trust my guy way before I trust what ESPN reports.
He might stay at UF,
but I doubt it. UK is the only job I know that BD would go too. I have not heard officially that he has turned UK down. This was never a win or X & O’s issue with BG by the way.
just an idea… what about mike anderson from mizzou? and although it probably would never happen and i dont know if it would work…Pat Riley? haha thats a little funny but hey hes pat riley
If we get into 3rd tier coaches in our search...
I agree that Anderson would be an interesting hire. He plays a style of basketball that the fans would embrace.
I do not know how he would handle the pressure cooker. He did come from Arkansas, but seeing it as an assistant to a virtual legend and actually experiencing it are two totally different things.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
