Meeting set for this afternoon
A meeting is set for this afternoon between the principals of the UK coaching debate. WKYT is reporting via Dick Gabriel. This is from the mouth of Gillispie himself, according to the news report.
Treat as an open thread.

this afternoon is good enough
we’re all impatient because we are passionate about the cats…
the issue becomes more of why they’re waiting this long
just hoping that they have waited til this afternoon in order to finalize a contract with the new hire and formally sever with the last
by UKFaninSoFla on Mar 27, 2009 1:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would hate to think that the administration actually formalized a contract while the previous coach was still employed.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Lexington

I thought the drama after OTS’s departure was maddening.

Incredible.
UK is allowing Gillispie to control information and communication. Serves them right. Can this possibly be handled any more poorly? At this point, I’d be surprised if Barnhart survived this mess.

Hoze, I've been thinking that from the start
This whole debacle has been dealt with so badly, it’s not even funny. I feel like Barnhart and Co. let the media run wild with this and also fueled it even further by saying VERY little on Gillispie’s behalf which aggravates me to no end. But on the other hand, I don’t have all the facts, and I don’t know everything that the ones at the top do. I just think he deserves 2-3 more years.

I am not sure what you mean. But if you mean this...
It would be analogous having a celebratory wedding in your backyard. In the meantime, your neighbor is running around naked in their front yard, pulling their hair out, and then setting their house on fire.
It’s true that the ‘spotlight’ would probably be on that crazy neighbor, but I think the wedding reception would still be a lot of fun. The naked goofy guy may get some sort of kick out thinking he ruined the good time, but in reality he won’t have a house to sleep in.

So wait...
We’re the wedding reception right?
No, no… we’re the house.
Wait. Maybe we’re the spotlight.
I’m confused.

So Louisville basketball = "a celebratory wedding"
Kentucky basketball = crazy neighbor. Fun! Weird analogy, but I can go with that. It think crazy neighbor sounds way more fun than “celebratory wedding.” I mean, GAG.

I was just trying to relate to the fairer sex on this board.
I could have said a great bachelor party instead :)
Regardless, it’s going to be one hell of a party tonight on my side of the fence. I just hope that the fire department is successful on putting out the flames before the entire house burns down.

thanks, but
THIS member of the fairer sex would be shooting Beam in a tube top and cutoffs with the crazy neighbors rather than watching The Notebook and discussing how it makes you feeeeel with the Louisville fans.
You know I love you Hoze! But OF COURSE UK fans would rather have the top ranked team getting ready for a sweet sixteen matchup than following our own little One Life to Live here. Naturally, we’re jealous (in the super-superior, TOTALLY-not-really-JEALOUS way that UK fans are jealous) that your “house” is harmonious and winning. But do you really HAVE to be a dick and begrudge us the tiny little evil pleasure that it is to acknowledge that UK has found a way to work itself into the conversation, even when is by rights Louisville’s shining hour? You won the round, okay? Let us have this. Let it go : )

but bcg came in, signed patterson, cried some and we were off to the races.
same thing this time – billy d comes in, keeps recruits (maybe brings in a big name ala grasslands prediction/rumor/whatever..) and we are off to the races again – projecting final four next year….
after all the new coach will be undefeated!
by memphis wildcat on Mar 27, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just hope they take their time replacing him IF they let him go-
I hope we’re not in for the same thing that happened when they replaced Tubby. The bottom line is that the University dropped the ball more on this than BCG. Had they spent more time vetting this guy, they would have seen him for what he is, and that…is not a top-tier caliber coach fit for a school like UK. I blame a lot of the problems we saw on the AD, too- he should have been in there telling BCG that you can’t always play man-to-man D and win and that you have to play players consistently. I simply think this thing was a bad marriage from the git-go.
It is unfortunate to have a situation such as this and unfortunate that UK cannot get someone who a) can handle the job; and b) stay! Any names come to mind?
by ukfansinga on Mar 27, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I happen to hire a lot of people.
One trait that doesn’t impress me, and in fact concerns me is the one where the guy is all about the job. 100% focused, etc. To me that suggests a real work/life balance issue that rarely turns out well, or someone that is not very organized, or at worse, one who is just a little nuts.

High calibar coach? Really?
Based on what? Getting the most out of his team? Improving his players? Rallying the fanbase? Recruiting? Proudly representing the university? Long-term proven success? Being a great communicator?
…and if you respond with a simple 2-year >.500 won/loss record, I may just throw up.

No one in their right mind (I realize you’re a Cardinal fan) would say he’s not.
Bobby Knight was a TERRIFIC basketball coach. He would have been a TERRIBLE fit at UK in the 70’s and 80’s.

How did this become such a circus?
Still trying to figure out how this became such a circus? It is the fans and the media that have blown everything out of control.
Administration never said there was going to be a press conference on Friday. Never said there would even be a decision on Friday. Never even really said there was a “decision” looming. They have always just said, “We’ll meet with the coach after the season to evaluate the season” It is now just days after the season. Pushed further, they said “No announcement about Gillispie’s future would come before Friday.”
Somehow, left to the media and chat boards, that statement turned in to everything from “They are going to fire him Friday” to “There will be press conference introducing a new coach Friday”. Could it simply be that everyone was telling the truth. Today is the meeting to evaluate the season and Billy’s plans for next year. I’m sure Todd and Barnhart will bring up areas they would like Billy to change, on and off the court. They should then listen to what he has to say. If Billy says he won’t change anything, maybe then they decide to part ways. If he agrees to modify some behavior, lays out his plan for on the court improvement, then they should give him another year.
Again, no one said any decision was going to be made today, just that it would not be made BEFORE today.
by markanderin on Mar 27, 2009 2:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
what else was he supposed to say?
He said there was going to be a meeting. There is a meeting. Nothing changed between Wednesday night and today. I’m not letting him off the hook completely, some votes of confidence earlier in the NIT would have helped. But what else is there to say, without yet having talked to the coach?
by markanderin on Mar 27, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He should have diffused it starting at the SEC tourny
Instead, he went into the bunker while the media and the rumors went nuts.
by btcoop71 on Mar 27, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And say what?
Diffuse how? All he can say is “Billie’s our coach. Once the season is over, we will sit down, like we do with all employees, and evaluate the season and performance and talk about the future.”
Unless you’re saying he should have come out before the SEC and say he’s fired. Or say he is definitely back. But he didn’t know.

Um, have you seen the message boards parsing every statement every person event remotely close the program says? What you say in this situation is EXTREMELY relevant.
by markanderin on Mar 27, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm saying it is irrelevant to what he chooses to do eventually
Everyone knows the dreaded “vote of confidence” means someone is getting fired, so why not say it and at least try to put some of the wild rumors to rest?
I think he just likes the publicity.

by Magnoliacat on Mar 27, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The problem with that line of reasoning. . .
. . .is that not a SINGLE person with “sources” has said that he is coming back. Could the crowd all be wrong and he is and/or no decision has been made? Yeah, it’s possible. But one would think there would be multiple different rumors flying around, not one consistent thread of “BCG is out.”

I think the Cat is out of the bag at this point.....
How do they retain BCG after all this? If he has shown the attrition many say he has, how long will it last? What are the benchmarks that coach would have to achieve to be back for a 4th year? If they bring him back, it may be as much trouble with recruiting as firing him becuase I don’t know how he could tell a recruit that he will be here in another 2, 3, 4 years?
I am afraid that this situation has gotten to the point that the only alternative is to let him go and deal with whatever happens with a new coach. Just an observation. too much damage has been done.

by SevenRings on Mar 27, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I found it.....
Orestes Meeks….
"It clearly didn’t look like it was working," Orestes Meeks said.
The elder Meeks suggested that Gillispie made it difficult for UK to maximize its potential.
"You don’t want to throw gasoline on the flames, but, clearly, a lot of things happened behind the scenes that made it difficult for the kids to play basketball and focus on winning," the elder Meeks said.
Ironically, Orestes Meeks lamented the lack of a relationship with Gillispie. The former UK coach had often spoke of the importance of building relationships.
But Gillispie did not call the elder Meeks when his son set a UK record with 54 points against Tennessee.
"I got calls from every coach he ever had: baseball, basketball, all of them," the elder Meeks said. "Except his current coach. His current coach never called. That said a lot to me."

The biggest mistake UK can make is to do the same thing they did last time...
Hire an unvetted coach with little to no experience, no recruiting inroads, ect.. No more flavor of the month.
This means no Travis Ford.
He’s a great coach and a rising talent, but if you think Clydethorpe stung, then that has no where to go but down.

afraid it will sound like one of those "i know a guy, that knows a guy" but
it is coming from someone close to the Ford camp – his impression is that Ford was #2 and had not really been approached seriously because they were making progress with the #1 choice (billy d).
interesting side note was that the assts at UL – several who are UK guys – would love to come back but pitino did not go there…..
thats what i heard – could all be junk…….
by memphis wildcat on Mar 27, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Masiello and McCarty are all we have I think...
Regardless UK isn’t looking for an assistant, and neither of them are up for A job let alone that job LOL.
I know Billy D seems like a huge homerun, but outside of Florida’s accidental insane class of 04, can you really say the he’s done any more than an average job?
Louisville Basketball: Crushing dreams since 1911
by cardinal on Mar 27, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i partially agree on billy d
based on the resume, it is less of a risk than anyone else – he has the NCs and he knows the pressure cooker that is UK. mitch made the risky choice last time, he has to go this way.
i do believe that it will be easier for billy to get other classes like 04 when at UK – call me dilusional, but that is what i believe.
my point on the assts is that they would have liked to come back to uk as pitino assts – but that is so far off the wall, i do not want to go there….
by memphis wildcat on Mar 27, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know what your saying and to an extent I agree
But my beef is that noone really remembers that the 04 class was suppposed to be mediocre at best. Billy D didn’t go out and hand pick superstars. They were a fluke.
In fact Uk had the top class in 04….
that didn’t work out too well.
Lol at the asst. coach thing.

fair comments
to a certain extent, we are going to see if lightning strikes twice (or a third time?) with billy d.
of course, that might be why he came to UK this time. it will be a chance to cement his legacy – not taking anything away from 2 NCs because he is already in rare company – but winning one at a “national” or “historic” power has to be his goal
i lol on the assist thing to – i always wondered what the uk guys on the ul staff think – must be difficult given the rivalry that they had with ul – and they do not have the perspective of age that pitino has -
for our sake – hope we hear something at 430 -
by memphis wildcat on Mar 27, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
For sure...
Donovan is a solid choice. If he wins three championships he’s a freaking legend.
I’ve always wondered about the assistants honestly, lol what I have really came to think is that more than anything they were loyal to Rick, none of them grew up in KY and compared to their tenures elsewhere they actually spent less time at UK than anywhere they’ve been. So I don’t think it bothers them tremendously to be at UL
