WHAS-11 is reporting that Gillispie is out
This is an MSM report from a generally reliable news source. I have no details, but they announced it just a few minutes ago. I wasn't even home when the news broke, my wife told me.

Funny... those were my first thoughts as well
“That poor girl with the Tinkerbell avatar is going to be so upset…”
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
ohhhh I just hope
they have an ace, grandslam hire in their back pocket to whip out. That’s the only way this makes sense, if in fact he is fired.

Can you imagine Calipari and Sandy Bell working elbow-to-elbow??
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
Best hire that UK has made in the last 30 years....and I include Pitino in that consideration.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
What about the recruits?
Does anyone have a link to an article about any comments about their status if Gillispie leaves?
This is why I think Donovan is more likely
He would be available this weekend to fly out to Oklahoma and try to salvage the deal with Orton.
If we go for Calipari, it may be a couple weeks of angst from the BBN while we wait and wonder.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Or, he amy be available tonight
44-34 Missouri (but it’s still early)

But I wonder
why no one else seems to have the story?? You have to think they’re pretty damn sure or else they wouldn’t go with it, since it would be a Dewey beats Truman-level mistake (in KY, anyway).

WHAS is very reliable.
The odds of them blowing this are so close to zero it isn’t worth mentioning.

They said "Our sources inside the administration say he is out"
And that there will be a press conference as early as tomorrow morning.

See the picture above.
My wife said that WHAS said Gillispie was no longer with UK. The graphic said he was fired.

I have no real time to react to this.
Unfortunately, I am behind on a project and I’ll have to get up at 0-dark:30 to work on until my meeting at 10:00. So don’t expect any reax from me until sometime tomorrow afternoon.
I’ll have to keep posting open threads, I suppose. Maybe Ken will come in with something.

I find it odd...
that if this is true,it isn’t being reported on any of the Lexington TV stations as of yet. I would think it would be breaking news.
Gillispie probably leaked it
His last F-you on the way out the door to the administration and the Lexington media – no organized press conference and no scoop for the home team.
Fire Barnhart (and publicly flog Todd, but he can stay, I guess)
I was watching Grey's with my girlfriend when they broke in with it
I just don’t see it being false at this point.

I am hearing from Jeff Drummond ...

There probably is A LOT we don’t know and I think we just need to let it play out. I know Lee Todd and Mitch would not fire him unless they had some very good reasons.

that's honestly what I think
there’s GOT to be more to it that being snippy to a sideline reporter and giving a bad answer to the university ambassador question. Maybe I’m naive, but I just can’t believe the admin would fire (if indeed that’s happened) him just because they didn’t LIKE HIM. But I have my doubts if we’ll ever know the full story…

Might be better than Donavon, Calipari, or Ford.
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
"Might be"
But he is far from a proven commodity. Hell, Tubby beat him with one of the weakest UK teams in recent memory in the tourney just a couple years ago.

Indeed. Looks like Calipari will be available really soon if UK wants....
…. contact him about the head coaching position. :-)
GBB!!!
I Heard on the radio
This morning that Calapari gets a five million dollar bonus if he stays at Memphis for 5 years, and he has a really good class comming in, and has an easy road to the tournament every year, so why would he want to come to the SEC?
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
friend
of mine is a Memphis Booster and I trust what he says…….he said that Cal will not leave Memphis. He had too many good recruits coming in. Doesn’t want to leave a good thing
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
Why in the world
would Calipari leave Memphis for UK? I’m a lifelong UK fan, but seriously. He has taken a less than mediocre program and built them into a national powerhouse. He has top echelon recruiting classes every year, with another one coming next year, he hasn’t lost a C-USA game since the Titanic sank and for tha reason he has the easiest road to the Final Four ever year, plus in Memphis he’s already loved. To leave and come to UK would be like building a million dollar home and letting someone else live in it while you moved into a tent, likely to IMPLODE at any time.
Barnhardt has made a mess of this. Can’t wait to hear Michael Wilbon stellar comments about this one, if it is true. Still, I believe no report that says “a reliable source”. I will believe it when Barnhardt makes it official.
B. Mc
And I was just agreeing with you guys..
and stating as to why Cal woudn’t leave. lol

It depends, I think.
Most will rally to the new coach, unless the coaching search is a debacle. We’ll have to wait and see how that goes.

it totally depends on the hire. If it’s a golden boy, all’s forgotten.
by blue kentucky girl on Mar 26, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Donovan
if he comes to UK, will he still be the “Golden Boy”. Remember we are hated by most of the national media.
I disagree
I think most fans have a bit of an inferiority complex when it comes to the national media.
Remember, Pitino and Tubby were adored by the national media. Gillispie is a relative unknown to them and doesn’t schmooze them the way they’d like… so he doesn’t get the love.
Donovan was able to recruit a 14 year old kid and get praised for it just three weeks after Gillispie was villified for the same thing.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
No gloats from me.
Not in the least. I can’t see any reason for G to be fired at this point. Perhaps it’ll work out for UK and the program will absolutely dominate for many years, but it’s going to leave a mark for a while.

I'm thinkin' the Big East has proven themselves as a conference to this point.

Heard an interview with a basketball guru on The Herd the other day
They said they talked to Greg Monroe about why he didn’t play for Duke and his response was “Their big man coach is Steve Wojochehowski. How am I supposed to learn and develop my game from a guy who used to play point guard?”
I thought it was a valid point.

from KSR in regards to whas11
This was followed by a statement to WHAS 11 from UK saying the story of Gillispie being fired today is not true. WHAS 11 said that in their 11 pm story, but stuck with their report that he would not be back next season.
Sorry if this has been posted.

okay, on the KSR blog it says there was
"…a statement to WHAS 11 from UK saying the story of Gillispie being fired today is not true. WHAS 11 said that in their 11 pm story, but stuck with their report that he would not be back next season. "
Zozo (above) wrote that “WHAS has retracted thier story about BG being out " but it appears this should have read "being fired.”
Beyond that, I see no evidence anyone has retracted the story that he is gone.

got a big whiff of what Mitch was cookin. Billy decided he had twisted long enough. Billy knows he gets 6 bills for the buy out, no matter what they call it. So Billy wasn’t officially fired. UK will declared a parting of ways-mutal agreement…blah, blah, blah.

Alabama Sports radio show
…earlier tonight interviewed the Florida sports blogger who had reported BD to Lex.
(Paul Finebaum show / Kevin Brockway)
Brockway said:
“let’s begin by saying it is somewhat speculative but I had first heard on Tues from a source I consider reliable that there was some sort of verbal agreement between Billy [D] and Kentucky although I have since heard that that’s not necessarily the case at this point. But, what basically I do know is that obviously there was a plane that went from Gainesville to (I have since corrected it) "Mount Sterling” Kentucky, a private plane, and then went from there to South Bend, Indiana. And was Billy [D] on that plane? Was Mitch Barnhart on that plane? Who knows? But apparently it happened on Wednesday….I talked to an athletic department official today who said Billy Donovan is in the state of Florida, and he considered this to be all media speculation at this point."
you
never know but this makes sense as I keep hearing over and over again that Mitch would not fire Billy without having someone in mind. I don’t want Donovan at all. I think is he sooooooooooooo OVERRATED!
