I am reaching the fatigue point with rumor-passing.  I will be deleting any more rumor posts that are not supportable by a link or by some kind of verifiable support.  Enough is enough.

The Billy Gillispie call-in show is on right now, and the Coach will be taking questions.  Treat this as an open thread.

Monkeys @#&**$! a football

UK administrators being the monkeys and the Basketball program being the football.

The national spotlight on Kentucky’s basketball program and the debacle surrounding BCG is absolutely killing our chances to bring in the best basketball talent.

An immediate example would be the younger Curry brother who is shopping for a better program to highlight his skills etc… There is no way that those folks advising Curry would
even discuss Kentucky under the current situation.

You might not think Curry is worth it, but the same problem exists whoever you do think
is a great addition to Kentucky basketball.

Grant is a former Florida assistant under Donovan, and current

He’s a very good coach, IMHO.

Question for Forty...

Would you say that all this team needs is a reliable, capable PG and a true center as a low post threat to be a dangerous team? I’ve been watching UK basketball my whole life and really think we are not that far off. What do you think?

I'm not 40, but

I think we definitely need a capable PG that is at least somewhat of a scoring threat. I don’t think we need a true center, at least now, as long as we have another Patterson-esque player down low. I’m fine playing 2 4s, it’s just that Stephenson isn’t cutting it.

Not that I would be opposed to putting Thabeet at the 5 and Patterson at the 4. . .

--O.W.

by blbskue on Mar 26, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Really my comment was more in reference to Orton, a true center. Patterson would make the opposing teams pay when they double team him if he had another strong finisher ( and no, Stephenson is not a strong finisher). In my opinion, Perry would be much better suited coming off of the bench.

by goinss1 on Mar 26, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, well, specifically talking about Orton,

yes, we NEED Orton. Hard to say any team doesn’t NEED someone like him.

The thing is this – next year we might be able to have Orton at the 5 and Patterson at the 4. Then we lose Patterson, but we would gain Dominique Ferguson to step in at the 4, so we still have a dynamic 4/5 combo.

I’m also hoping Pilgrim turns out to be great, but I have to be skeptical until I see him play.

Orton Not A "True" 5

Coach, on his call-in show, talked about how Patterson had no help inside all season and though Stevenson tried he was too small to set adequate screens and block out. And said Orton was a 4 with size, great hands and high BB IQ. With addition of Pilgrim Patterson will have much more help and better season.

My Take on BCG

I feel like BCG has sort of ‘worn out his welcome with upper management. I sincerely hope for the sake of the program that he will stay – maybe alot of us think this way now. But, going back to last year – and I’m sure I have forgotten some things- 1)there was the issue with Legion, Jasper, and others on the team 2) then bringing UK in the spotlight with the scholarship offer to a ninth grader 3)then making Big Blue Madness a practice – again bringing negative attention to us 4) He told us last year that he would sit down and hash out a contract – but still has his MOU 5) the losses to the little schools and home losses 6)The run-ins with reporters-again UK in a bad light 7)Former players openly critical of him

Any of these issues alone but could be brushed aside but cumulatively they have obviuosly PO’d alot of very influential folks associated with the team. Think about it, MB and LT have their bosses too … and they are interested in saving their skin (if possible?) These two may be pressured to let him go. My hope is that if we do have to let him go that a top flight coach is waiting to step in … who could that be?? I heard Pat Riley’s name here this morning and Calipari as well. Got fingers crossed ;) Still a fan!!

Andy Staples Nailed It

Staples writing in SI has the correct take on BCG:

Gillispie is in this mess not because he was rude to ESPN sideline reporter Jeanine Edwards on two separate, bizarre occasions or because of his hatred for the zone. Had Gillispie’s team won the SEC instead of finishing fourth in the Eastern division, he could have cursed out Edwards on live television and fans would have rushed to defend him.

It’s all about W’s and L’s and success in NCAA. Do that and everything else falls in place.

by Wild Weasel on Mar 26, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

AGREE

Wins at home and SEC T or regular title and NCAA berth would have been a big boost.

by ukcris on Mar 26, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Not So

That prior UK coach had 3X W as L and good success in NCAA.

It’s more than W or L.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 26, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Elite Eight Not

Anything short of The Final Four is not “good success”…not for a supposed elite program. 3 consecutive double-digit-loss seasons (2000-2001-2002) and 5 such seasons in 8 years is not success for UK. Thus the change, thus the present condition.

by Wild Weasel on Mar 26, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Baloney

UK has 13 FF in 71 years of the NCAA tourney.

The other 58 years were not successful???

Baloney.

UK averaged 26-8 those years. Not 10 L but 8. Just like Joe Hall averaged. 8 L.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 26, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

technically

if you define “success” as reaching a goal and if that goal is making the final four, then the other 58 years would not be “successful”

however if that is the case, an 18% success rate is pretty amazing.

by schizm42 on Mar 26, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

But If "Most FF" Was Your Definition Of Success

They have led UK in FF appearances for 30 years now.

err

i don’t understand what you are saying.

(and if anything I was supporting your point above – I guess you didn’t get that)

I root for UK because i was born at UK, grew up in lexington, took classes there, and live and die with the team. I would root for them if we were winless.

Do i define “success” as making the final four? no. I think it depends on the year and the team. However, I am supporting the right for someone else to think that “success” is making the final four. And I am saying that our “success” in that regard is amazing.

I will choose not to be offended by your insulting my fanhood.

by schizm42 on Mar 26, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm Saying It's NONSENSE For Only FF Seasons To Be Successful Ones

UK hasn’t had Most FF since UCLA run in 60’s and 70’s.

I don't know why everyone thinks we are going to get somebody like Pat Riley or Rick Pitino.

IF we fire BCG, we might want to think about someone like Sean Miller at Xavier. The guys won more games at Xavier than anyone else there in the same amount of time. The guy played pt. guard in college and in the NBA. Why don’t I hear any word on his name???

by goinss1 on Mar 26, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

I feel like Orton will come anyway

oops! Sorry
I think Orton and Patterson already talk quite a bit and are looking forward to playing topgether – that’s a big plus for an incoming coach. Hood is from Ky and I feel like he will want to play here – another plus .. and I think there will be defections but, overall a coach coming in would have lots to work with.

I don’t know much about Miller, but I thought Capel would be a good catch being that he has NBA ties and could recruit solidly here. I don’t think Donovan would be the best bet, I really like the way Rick P develops players … but, I don’t think he would come.

All of this is killing UK, you all know , recriuting ect.. and everything else. If MB is planning on keeping BG he is stupid and the worst AD I have ever seen. Just think it was too little too late …. I think even MB might see where giving Billy another year would be a good idea – but, he is probably being pressured to get rid of him from Board of Directors, Boosters etc… I think BCG has been his own worst enemy

Teachable Moment in Career

Face it, each of us at some time has been in need of mercy and grace. Mitch and Dr. Todd have effectively gotten Coach’s attention. They should place him under a corrective action plan to address his needy areas and give him another year. I would bet that Coach would thrive for years at UK. He has already shown in the past two weeks a different attitude.

BG

The only thing I can think of MB LT are doing is putting BG on hot seat to see if he will change or not. They might just be testing him. If he shows that he can change his attitude they might give him another chance. I doubt it though. I am about 100% sure they are letting him go at his choice or they will fire him if he does not resign.

by kykat51 on Mar 26, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you kidding?

Have you forgotten how poorly Crum ran the program at the end? How he lost interest and arguably control? Anyone with any sort of perspective should have realized it would take some time for Pitino to right the program, especially in a league as strong as the Big East. I don’t want to pile on Gillispie with this comment, but I think it’s fair to say that he didn’t lead the team well at all in a historically weak SEC conference. Big difference if you want to compare those particular teams’ performances.

Regardless, don’t dare put me in some sort of camp where I was critical of Pitino. I knew Denny as an alum. He should have left earlier. I really don’t get your point.

We are Kentucky but it's not like the old days anymore

I think we all need to step back and look at things from a different perspective. There are a few points I’d like to make and have considered:

1. UK won a lot of the games that make us the all time leader in wins during the Rupp era. That gave us a great jump when the best recruits only looked at UK when basketball was considered and we ruled the world of college basketball.

2. UK won 4 of our 7 National Championships under Rupp. And then 1 under Hall in his 6th season, 1 under Pitino in his 7th season and 1 under Tubby in his 1st season.

3. BCG has taken this program from his less than 2 years from 18 wins to 22 wins. We had 22 wins under Tubby his last 2 years here.

I also might note that Pitino had 14 wins in Season 1 and 22 wins Season 2 of his career and then jumped to 29 wins in his 3rd year. Joe B. went 20-8 and then 13-13 his first 2 years. And Rupp went an outstanding 15-3 and 15-2 in 1930-1932. Perhaps we should have fired all of them during their second year?

Are we over-expecting of anyone who comes to this position as UK Basketball head coach? Everyone keeps telling me, “we expect championships, we expect Elite Eights, we expect…”

And then comes PARITY to ruin the party. It’s a really simple formula. The talent out there has risen so that even non-elite colleges are getting chances at great players. How did Stephen Curry get to Davidson past UK, UNC, Duke, Florida, etc.? How does Gonzago become a national name so quickly? PARITY….

Really, if you were an 18 year old would you want to come to UK to be constantly critiqued about everything and have to deal with this kind of scrutiny or would you rather go to another school where you could be good or great but have off days without you or your coaches name being trashed in the press and public?

Last time I checked Duke, UNC and like had been to the NIT and lost there in the very recent past.

It’s time to rally behind our coach and our players and tell Dr. Todd and Mitch that we want to seem them all for another year.

The problem with "one more year"

There seems to be a movement within the “Keep Billy” segment that he should get 1 more year, but then if not successful, he should be shown the door. Here’s the question: How do you recruit in that environment? You can’t honestly look a recruit in the eye and tell him you will be there as his coach next year. It basically makes BCG’s administration lame duck, and those are usually ineffective.

Perhaps the well has been poisoned so much that it is for the best he be gone.
