Open Thread: Rumors Edition
I am reaching the fatigue point with rumor-passing. I will be deleting any more rumor posts that are not supportable by a link or by some kind of verifiable support. Enough is enough.
The Billy Gillispie call-in show is on right now, and the Coach will be taking questions. Treat this as an open thread.

Monkeys @#&**$! a football
UK administrators being the monkeys and the Basketball program being the football.
The national spotlight on Kentucky’s basketball program and the debacle surrounding BCG is absolutely killing our chances to bring in the best basketball talent.
An immediate example would be the younger Curry brother who is shopping for a better program to highlight his skills etc… There is no way that those folks advising Curry would
even discuss Kentucky under the current situation.
You might not think Curry is worth it, but the same problem exists whoever you do think
is a great addition to Kentucky basketball.
Cage the monkeys!!
Amen.
That’s exactly what it looks like to me as well. :-)

Fire Barnhart (and publicly flog Todd, but he can stay, I guess)
perhaps highly unlikely
but if there was 0% chance of his coming back, he would already be gone.
Well ...
… I’m not so sanguine about that, but we do know that he hasn’t left town and hasn’t flown home like some reports had said earlier.
I suppose when Barnhart and Todd get done with that football, we may find out something. :-)

Thanks for the link.
I got to hear the last half and it seemed the support was overwhelming. Maybe they were screening the others.
BCG sounded ok actually. Sometimes you can read a person’s voice. I really don’t think he knows for certain yet what is going on. But maybe he is just a good poker player.
I guess we will see tomorrow. I am so tired of this.

Q: ANY MEETINGS SCHEDULED WITH ANYONE IN THE ADMINISTRATION?
BCG: NOT THAT I KNOW OF, NO
Q: SO YOUR STATUS (TO RECAP FOR FOLKS THAT WEREN’T HERE AT THE TOP) — AS FAR AS YOU KNOW YOUR STATUS IS?
BCG: I MEAN I, DON’T KNOW OF ANY DIFFERENT….WHEN THEY TELL ME SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT, THEN I’LL DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT, BUT AS FAR AS I KNOW I’M GONNA WORK MY TAIL OFF JUST LIKE I ALWAYS HAVE AND TRY TO GET SOMETHING DONE.

Here is a theory (not a rumor, my own theory)
If he is being replaced and if he hasn’t met with the administration then that tells me the first choice for the replacement coach is still alive in the NCAA Tournament.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
I will be glad...
…when this is all over. Hopefully, we give the guy a chance. The Lexington media (particularly the LHL) should be ashamed of themselves. It seems that Lexington media outlets like to drive us, the die-hard Wildcat fans, crazy with rumor-mongering and speculation advertised as factual news. All I have to say is that winning cures everything and it’s hard to win with a senior class that consists only of Jared Carter.

Interesting article. Florida folks tracking private planes to small towns in Kentucky? Seth Davis on ESPN also reported this afternoon that the leading candidate for the Alabama Coaching position (I forgot his name…Grant?) is holding off on his decision to see what happens at Kentucky?
Spy vs Spy! Basketball Espionage!!!
Grant is a former Florida assistant under Donovan, and current
head coach at VCU. Two years ago when Donovan said he was going to the Magic, Grant was the set up replacement. If Donovan were to leave now, Grant would almost certainly replace him. If not, I think he’ll end up at ’Bama.
He’s a very good coach, IMHO.

Question for Forty...
Would you say that all this team needs is a reliable, capable PG and a true center as a low post threat to be a dangerous team? I’ve been watching UK basketball my whole life and really think we are not that far off. What do you think?
UK Was Dangerous Until Mid January (16-4 Then)
Need a PG for sure. Terrible recruiting in 2008 missing on both PG signees.
25 W likely in 2010. Maybe more. Y not?

I hear you Forty. I hope we keep BCG for continuity’s sake. IF he stays, I think Villarino’s play might make or break BCG’s stop here at KY. You don’t see teams that lead their conference in shooting % AND defensive shooting % without there being talent on the floor.
Yep. I remember national comments ranging from the
“most dangerous team in the nation” to “playing better than anyone in the nation” to “poised for a deep run in March.”

I'm not 40, but
I think we definitely need a capable PG that is at least somewhat of a scoring threat. I don’t think we need a true center, at least now, as long as we have another Patterson-esque player down low. I’m fine playing 2 4s, it’s just that Stephenson isn’t cutting it.
Not that I would be opposed to putting Thabeet at the 5 and Patterson at the 4. . .
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.
--O.W.
Really my comment was more in reference to Orton, a true center. Patterson would make the opposing teams pay when they double team him if he had another strong finisher ( and no, Stephenson is not a strong finisher). In my opinion, Perry would be much better suited coming off of the bench.
Oh, well, specifically talking about Orton,
yes, we NEED Orton. Hard to say any team doesn’t NEED someone like him.
The thing is this – next year we might be able to have Orton at the 5 and Patterson at the 4. Then we lose Patterson, but we would gain Dominique Ferguson to step in at the 4, so we still have a dynamic 4/5 combo.
I’m also hoping Pilgrim turns out to be great, but I have to be skeptical until I see him play.

looks like he might be a Walter McCarty type, at best. That’s still pretty good though if he can perform that well.

Orton Not A "True" 5
Coach, on his call-in show, talked about how Patterson had no help inside all season and though Stevenson tried he was too small to set adequate screens and block out. And said Orton was a 4 with size, great hands and high BB IQ. With addition of Pilgrim Patterson will have much more help and better season.

What if the scenario everyone seems to think was playing out (Gillispie out, Donovan agreeing in principal and being introduced ASAP), but then it got blown up somehow? My Take on BCG
I feel like BCG has sort of ‘worn out his welcome with upper management. I sincerely hope for the sake of the program that he will stay – maybe alot of us think this way now. But, going back to last year – and I’m sure I have forgotten some things- 1)there was the issue with Legion, Jasper, and others on the team 2) then bringing UK in the spotlight with the scholarship offer to a ninth grader 3)then making Big Blue Madness a practice – again bringing negative attention to us 4) He told us last year that he would sit down and hash out a contract – but still has his MOU 5) the losses to the little schools and home losses 6)The run-ins with reporters-again UK in a bad light 7)Former players openly critical of him
Any of these issues alone but could be brushed aside but cumulatively they have obviuosly PO’d alot of very influential folks associated with the team. Think about it, MB and LT have their bosses too … and they are interested in saving their skin (if possible?) These two may be pressured to let him go. My hope is that if we do have to let him go that a top flight coach is waiting to step in … who could that be?? I heard Pat Riley’s name here this morning and Calipari as well. Got fingers crossed ;) Still a fan!!
Andy Staples Nailed It
Staples writing in SI has the correct take on BCG:
Gillispie is in this mess not because he was rude to ESPN sideline reporter Jeanine Edwards on two separate, bizarre occasions or because of his hatred for the zone. Had Gillispie’s team won the SEC instead of finishing fourth in the Eastern division, he could have cursed out Edwards on live television and fans would have rushed to defend him.
It’s all about W’s and L’s and success in NCAA. Do that and everything else falls in place.
Not So
That prior UK coach had 3X W as L and good success in NCAA.
It’s more than W or L.

just thought some key wins would have eased some of the pressure ....
17 straight ncaa berths was hard to see go
Elite Eight Not
Anything short of The Final Four is not “good success”…not for a supposed elite program. 3 consecutive double-digit-loss seasons (2000-2001-2002) and 5 such seasons in 8 years is not success for UK. Thus the change, thus the present condition.
Baloney
UK has 13 FF in 71 years of the NCAA tourney.
The other 58 years were not successful???
Baloney.
UK averaged 26-8 those years. Not 10 L but 8. Just like Joe Hall averaged. 8 L.
by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 26, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
technically
if you define “success” as reaching a goal and if that goal is making the final four, then the other 58 years would not be “successful”
however if that is the case, an 18% success rate is pretty amazing.
But If "Most FF" Was Your Definition Of Success
Why not root for UCLA or UNC?
They have led UK in FF appearances for 30 years now.
by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 26, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions
err
i don’t understand what you are saying.
(and if anything I was supporting your point above – I guess you didn’t get that)
I root for UK because i was born at UK, grew up in lexington, took classes there, and live and die with the team. I would root for them if we were winless.
Do i define “success” as making the final four? no. I think it depends on the year and the team. However, I am supporting the right for someone else to think that “success” is making the final four. And I am saying that our “success” in that regard is amazing.
I will choose not to be offended by your insulting my fanhood.
I'm Saying It's NONSENSE For Only FF Seasons To Be Successful Ones
UK hasn’t had Most FF since UCLA run in 60’s and 70’s.
1970. 1954. 2003. 1977. Just several Non-FF but SUCCESSFUL years.

UK is better than that.
IU tolerated the jerk Bobby just because he won. Expect more of yourselves.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
Knight Fine Until
Bob Knight is a perfect example. When he was contending and winning championships his rude and uncivil attitude was at least tolerated if not lauded. It was only when the talent dropped off that the criticism reached its crescendo.
And the IU fans looked like a bunch of jerks justifying that behavior when it was convenient.
What is there to admire about that?
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
Real World
I’m not justifying Knight’s behavior just pointing out the insincerity — hypocrisy, if you will — of condoning lack of civility in good times but becoming judgmental when circumstances become less favorable.
Like UK "Fans" Did From 1998 Thru 2005 But Not In 2006 Or 2007?
Knight is HOF coach with 900+ W.
Hardly comparable to Gillispie or any UK coach BUT Rupp.

I am comparing fanbases. UK is better than IU. For too many years, IU tolerated and justified the bully and arse.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'

But I think you are doing yourself and the UK fanbase a disservice by saying all this wouldn’t have happened if Gillispie just would have won more games. Blame me for holding the fanbase and the UK administrators to higher standards if you want.

I don't know why everyone thinks we are going to get somebody like Pat Riley or Rick Pitino.
IF we fire BCG, we might want to think about someone like Sean Miller at Xavier. The guys won more games at Xavier than anyone else there in the same amount of time. The guy played pt. guard in college and in the NBA. Why don’t I hear any word on his name???
I feel like Orton will come anyway
oops! Sorry
I think Orton and Patterson already talk quite a bit and are looking forward to playing topgether – that’s a big plus for an incoming coach. Hood is from Ky and I feel like he will want to play here – another plus .. and I think there will be defections but, overall a coach coming in would have lots to work with.
I don’t know much about Miller, but I thought Capel would be a good catch being that he has NBA ties and could recruit solidly here. I don’t think Donovan would be the best bet, I really like the way Rick P develops players … but, I don’t think he would come.

i was turned off on him also and was ready to do a dance to get him fired but now I hope they atleast give him one more year. I saw a different man tonight and on the sideline yesterday. A man who was trying to act different and respect his players better.
Agree
Just think it was too little too late …. I think even MB might see where giving Billy another year would be a good idea – but, he is probably being pressured to get rid of him from Board of Directors, Boosters etc… I think BCG has been his own worst enemy
Teachable Moment in Career
Face it, each of us at some time has been in need of mercy and grace. Mitch and Dr. Todd have effectively gotten Coach’s attention. They should place him under a corrective action plan to address his needy areas and give him another year. I would bet that Coach would thrive for years at UK. He has already shown in the past two weeks a different attitude.
I too would like to see him return for another year too
Problem is he’s ticked off everyone associated with the program except the mascot and the jury is still out on that one ….
BG
If all stay BG would have a better team next year and BG would win 30 games. All of this other stuff would be trivial if he won 30 next year.

The only thing I can think of MB LT are doing is putting BG on hot seat to see if he will change or not. They might just be testing him. If he shows that he can change his attitude they might give him another chance. I doubt it though. I am about 100% sure they are letting him go at his choice or they will fire him if he does not resign.
But what if UK can't come to agreement with none of their first 2-3 top choices?

Where were you when Pitino took UL to the NIT 2 years in his current term. And don’t give me a current opinion. I am talking about back at the time.
Are you kidding?
Have you forgotten how poorly Crum ran the program at the end? How he lost interest and arguably control? Anyone with any sort of perspective should have realized it would take some time for Pitino to right the program, especially in a league as strong as the Big East. I don’t want to pile on Gillispie with this comment, but I think it’s fair to say that he didn’t lead the team well at all in a historically weak SEC conference. Big difference if you want to compare those particular teams’ performances.
Regardless, don’t dare put me in some sort of camp where I was critical of Pitino. I knew Denny as an alum. He should have left earlier. I really don’t get your point.

I am not doubting what you saw....
but it would seem strange that a Louisville station would get a quote like that from Lee Todd before anyone in Lexington and before the press conference
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
believe me,
I think it is is weird as well.

yeah I know.
Their website is pretty bad about being updated in a timely manner though.
Danielle Santoro is the one who is saying that is is confirmed.

Top 3 candidates if BCG is fired or let go
Donovan, Calipari and Ford.
Those are the 3 that John Clay listed tonight as the Top 3 in his live chat.
GBB!!!

Pat Forde(ESPN) and Andy Katz (CBS) also included Tom Izzo.
I'll run naked and do cartwheeels with a 2009 NCAA Championship UofL hat on through Two Keys if Izzo comes to UK.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
I am..
writing this down and now hoping it happens just so we can hold you to it. lol
I don’t think Izzo would come. I love my cats, but frankly I don’t see any established coach leaving a healthy situation to come to UK at this point in time. Donovan is the only possible one and only because Florida could careless about basketball and he figured after that back-to-back that they’d at least be half/half over football and basketball. Even at that, I’d be shocked if he came also.

...of course, UofL will have to win the championship too :)
…and if they do, I may still do it regardless of Izzo being named coach (okay…okay, I maybe would have done it 25 yrs ago)…..

No sympathy for Billy D as a gator
by blue oregon on Mar 26, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions
That's another reason
I’d be shocked to see him at UK. He’d have to pull another Billy D switch-a-roo to take the job.
My dad’s, friends, uncle’s, ex-wife (who works as a cleaning lady in the athletic department) said that she helped Billy G pack-up and ship out. She also said that Mitch Barnhardn’t nephew’s girlfriend’s mother told her that UK was going to go after Eddie Sutton!
Of course this blatent humor.. just wanted to see if I could google it in about 20 minutes and see a blog about it quoting me as a source.

That is twisted but funny in all this crud
by blue oregon on Mar 26, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions
lol.. Just my way
of stating that I’m over this “I heard from a reliable source” garbage. I’ll believe that he is the coach until they announce otherwise.
This is terrible, espcially after hearing this is causing Jon Hood to have 2nd thoughts. As reported they said he was shakey about coming here in the first place because of the crazy atmosphere but I guess Billy G convinced him to come regardless. Now this isn’t setting well with him and it seems obvious that is Billy G goes so does Orton. This just goes from bad to worse if they fire Billy G.
B. Mc
that is the worst case scenerio
I think also involving the recruits leaving as well.

Would be really ugly of they let this leak before a press conference
But, with all of the rumors flying maybe they already have.
watching it while I am at work :)

We are Kentucky but it's not like the old days anymore
I think we all need to step back and look at things from a different perspective. There are a few points I’d like to make and have considered:
1. UK won a lot of the games that make us the all time leader in wins during the Rupp era. That gave us a great jump when the best recruits only looked at UK when basketball was considered and we ruled the world of college basketball.
2. UK won 4 of our 7 National Championships under Rupp. And then 1 under Hall in his 6th season, 1 under Pitino in his 7th season and 1 under Tubby in his 1st season.
3. BCG has taken this program from his less than 2 years from 18 wins to 22 wins. We had 22 wins under Tubby his last 2 years here.
I also might note that Pitino had 14 wins in Season 1 and 22 wins Season 2 of his career and then jumped to 29 wins in his 3rd year. Joe B. went 20-8 and then 13-13 his first 2 years. And Rupp went an outstanding 15-3 and 15-2 in 1930-1932. Perhaps we should have fired all of them during their second year?
Are we over-expecting of anyone who comes to this position as UK Basketball head coach? Everyone keeps telling me, “we expect championships, we expect Elite Eights, we expect…”
And then comes PARITY to ruin the party. It’s a really simple formula. The talent out there has risen so that even non-elite colleges are getting chances at great players. How did Stephen Curry get to Davidson past UK, UNC, Duke, Florida, etc.? How does Gonzago become a national name so quickly? PARITY….
Really, if you were an 18 year old would you want to come to UK to be constantly critiqued about everything and have to deal with this kind of scrutiny or would you rather go to another school where you could be good or great but have off days without you or your coaches name being trashed in the press and public?
Last time I checked Duke, UNC and like had been to the NIT and lost there in the very recent past.
It’s time to rally behind our coach and our players and tell Dr. Todd and Mitch that we want to seem them all for another year.
/JW
Why
Would you fire Rupp 4 going 13-2 in his second year??Pitino was on a unlevel playing field didnt mention Tubby?did ya
No I did not
Tubby went 35-4 his 1st year and 28-9 his second year.
Gotcha
Tubby for his career at UK:
97- 98 – 35-4
23-10
24-10
22-10
32-4
27-5
28-6
22-13
06-07 22-12
Azubuike 2006
And Morris all year (not half) that season would have helped.

I agree...given a choice I'd go to UofL :)
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
Not starting a flame war
BTW, I just wanted to make sure everyone took a deep breath, stepped back and looked at things before everyone goes off some tangent that we can’t escape out off.
I agree with everything you said
It is the state of college basketball today.
Sadly, the BBN has no or little patience…this is going to hurt us for a while or longer with firing CoachG. He actually has it going in the right direction. I am po’d highly if he is fired and I hope he drains every $1 he can from the UK athletics board.
Some excellent points jw
I hope he stays. Looking forward to a nice year nest year.
The problem with "one more year"
There seems to be a movement within the “Keep Billy” segment that he should get 1 more year, but then if not successful, he should be shown the door. Here’s the question: How do you recruit in that environment? You can’t honestly look a recruit in the eye and tell him you will be there as his coach next year. It basically makes BCG’s administration lame duck, and those are usually ineffective.
Perhaps the well has been poisoned so much that it is for the best he be gone.
Fire Barnhart (and publicly flog Todd, but he can stay, I guess)
My sister just called me...
she leaves in Louisville and says WHAS 11 just broke into Grey’s anatomy and stated that they have independently confirmed that Billy G. is out …

yep that is what jclaytor posted and they discussed this on the KSR chat....
I still think it is weird that a Louisville station got a quote before a Lexington station and before the presser
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Duke went ahead 5-0
and Nova said I don’t think so and reeled off 11 straight
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Has a decision been made or not?
Andy Katz says
“a source with direct knowledge of the situation . . . said a decision would be made sometime Friday as to whether he’ll stay to coach his third season”
John Clay says
[Comment From Delk00]
Who is the most well connected media member to the UK program?
JohnClay: You mean national? Andy Katz has good sources.
Hey all
just got back from Lexington. I talked to Lee Todd and told him that we would fill his of
office with a sit it for as long as it took for him to keep Billy. he siad that wasn’t necessary
he said he is letting Billy stay on for one more year :)
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
