Larry Orton spent a few days in Virginia last week visiting his mother. When he returned home and went to work, he was hit with numerous questions about UK’s basketball coaching situation.

"People are trying to get Daniel to change his mind about Kentucky. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State want him bad. His cousin is coach at OU. If Gillispie is not there (next year), I guarantee he will call. There will be a lot of people calling. I bet Florida will call," Larry Orton said.

Well, obviously not surprising.

I would assume any big-time recuit would re-think his commitment if the coach that signed him was fired, and I would assume other schools would start pressuring him. Hopefully he honors his commitment no matter what, which was to the school, not the coach.

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

Cant agree

I hope that if Billy is out then so are the recruits.

All 3 UK Recruits Wanted Out In 1997

UK declined to release them from signed NLOI.

Good thing for them. Each got NCAA championship ring by honoring their LOI although each mostly sat on the bench in 1998 season.

Are you serious?

If Billy G leaves, you would like the program to suffer?

by btcoop71 on Mar 24, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am serious

Billy G wouldnt just “leave” – no matter how they spin it, if he left it would be because he had no other option. In that case then – yes – I would want his recruits to reconsider and if the program suffered then the fans would have to find somone else to blame. I know how it sounds, but that is just how I feel about it. If UK is going to do something as ugly and unfair as cutting loose their coach after only two seasons then there should be some consequences. They want someone else? Let them get their own recruits.

I believe in Billy G.

This goes far beyond being a Billy G apologist

The fact that you want the program to suffer over one man disrespects the University, the president, the AD (ok, I don’t respect him), the players, and the players families. Billy G made his bed, he needs to sleep in it. I’m not going to get into the “You;re not a real fan” kind of name calling, but seriously, have some common sense.

It is my opinion

and I have every right to it.

Not saying you don't have the right

My opinion, it is distrespectful and reeks of immaturity.

So be it.

That's ridiculous

You tell us that we should include the coach as “part of the team” when we say we support the team, yet you would want the entire program to suffer if they get rid of Billy..?
That tells me you are a bigger Billy G. fan then you are a UK fan…

I’m not a Billy supporter, but if they keep him, (and I think they will), I would want him and the team to do GREAT things… I would never wish ill of my Kentucky Wildcats…

I realize

that my thought on this is purely emotionally fueled. Do I really want the UK program to suffer – ofcourse not. Do I really believe that “getting rid” of Billy after two seasons is wrong and disgusting – absolutely. I believe that so strongly that there is part of me that would feel that some sort of consequece for that dispicable action would be justified – turn about is fair play and all that.

That being said, I LOVE Kentucky basketball, but I have been worn very thin by all of this. Judge me if you will, but I am human and can only tolerate so much frustration and disgust before emotions begin to take over. I wish the best for UK today and always, but should this ridiculous act go down, there will be that part of me that says, “You reap what you sow.”

I believe in Billy G.

the last 3 or so years...

…have been very hard on a lot of us… ;-)

And, like I’ve said before, Billy does deserve (at least) another year to right the ship…

I’m afraid though, that a decision has already been made… We’ll see…

Too Bad You Missed The 60's And 80's

On 2nd thought, probably better that you missed those decades, too.

I should miss

anything that involves cutting your coach loose after only two seasons.

Missed The Point

You may have been worn thin by either of those 2 decades if the past 2 years did that to you.

Ahhhhh

Gotcha. I would say that you are probably right.

Mr. Orton Is Correct

UK recruiting was hurt in 2007 when there was uncertainty about the future of the UK coach. It ultimately cost UK 1 recruit (Lucas) that spring.

Barnhart and Todd would do well to say Gillispie Is Our Coach, Period to eliminate any uncertainty.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 24, 2009 10:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not Without Impunity

I’m sure Mr. Barnhart realizes this but just in case: Forcing Gillispie out at this time will not be done without serious consequences — many of them unforeseen — and you will be held accountable by the BBN.

Wheres the love...

True fans shoudn’t even be talking about getting rid of their coach.Okay Gillispie hasn’t done the best job YET! but come on get rid of him?Do all of you understand what you are doing( that say to he$# with him).I honestly believe that not only Orton will be gone if not released out of his LOI,he would just transfer out the following year.Patterson and Meeks will probably go ahead with their NBA dreams.Carter will be gone,AJ Stewart will most likely transfer. So that leaves us with a starting lineup of : C Harrelson PF Stevenson SF Harris SG Miller PG Porter.I bet we will be NCAA Champs then. And then we can blame the new coach and get rid of him after one season right? Do you “complainers” understand that we are still playing, if you don’t like that we are in NIT I understand I don’t either so just consider this practice for a team that needs it!! If we were in the NCAA tournament we would probably be back at home right now, heres a kleenex, blow your noses and enjoy the ride!

No "True" Fans Are Talking Of Doing That

The great GREAT majority (here on ASOB) think G deserves more time to show what he can do.

You’re on the wrong blog, i think.

You evidently did not read many of the articles here before typing your post.

As Forty told you this is a predominant pro-Gillispie sight. Many of us share your same feelings and love for our UK basketball team. The team includes Coach G, always has in my mind.

Welcome to the blog.

Yes > 2 Years Is NOT Enough Time

There are questions remaining but he deserves 2-3 more years to answer them.

2010 will bring high expectations – 25 W, SEC or SECT title, NCAA Sweet 16.

Or better.

I am DEFINITELY

Pro-Gillispie.

One more year

is what is deserved. Any good coach can take a team with 3 years worth of his recruits and get farther than the NIT. I know its not all his fault, but some of it must be. A good coach somewhat adjusts his game to the players he has and maybe we’ll see that next year with Coach G. I want him to succeed but if the team is not headed in that direction after next year then a change is in order and I don’t think is unfair.

I apologize

but not for stating opinon, but if a posted this in the wrong or may have jumped to comclusions. It just makes me mad to hear people yelling for a new coach and then reading about recruits parents say that we may lose these players because of rumors.Again i apologize for any mistake I may have made.

by yearofthecat on Mar 25, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

one more year

would be the smart thing for UK to do. I don’t see Todd allowing Mitch to do the smart thing. They are going to mess this up and FUBAR the entire BB program.

I prefer Gillispie over Donovan.

Calipari is a great recruiter but Sandy Bell isn’t allowing him on campus.

One More Year

Would KILL recruiting.

He needs several (2 or 3) more years, minimum.
