Celebration Thread!

I am behind on a project, so I won't get to the postmortem for an hour or two.

So use this thread to celebrate our second-round victory over an outstanding Crieghton Bluejay team in their own arena, one of the best wins UK has had all year.

It was no Wildcat Lodge

the whole team had to sleep all in the same room, even with the coaches. All kinds of stuff was getting stolen.

UK v. Notre Dame

UK is 41-17 all-time versus the Irish.

They haven’t beaten UK since 3-5-90. That makes for a 10 game winning streak for the ’Cats.

Adolph Rupp lost his first seven games against Notre Dame (‘36-’42). Wow, I would not have thought that.

Since 1960 UK is 33-6 versus the Irish.

Thanks Tru

First “Celebration Thread” all year – and very timely. It definitely feels like the biggest win of the year. I’m getting tourney fever.

To the Cats – way to gut it out. Great game!!!!!!

I hated

his disappearing act in the first half but Meeks came through in the clutch….second game winner of the year.

nice win

Glad to see the Cats tough one out. It truly was a team effort, with our stars shining brightest when things began to darken.

My only dissatisfaction is that this game seems to suggest we are battling to play tough against the mid-majors……

Darius Miller—I really have enjoyed watching him emerge as a force in Blue!

Go Cats! Beat the Tripucka-less Irish!

UK WINS UK WINS!!! YEEEAAAHHH!!!

Even though they missed free throws, made bad passes, show total ineptness at the point at times, and had officials who don’t know that when you pick up the ball and then slide your feet around that it’s a travel….the CATS still managed to pull out a very ugly win, haha.

Meeks and Patterson are going to have to get burn cream for all the arm burn from the Creighton defenders pulling on them all night, that was pathetic.

by Fyrebird_86 on Mar 23, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

You make a good point

Patterson was hammered all night long, and it seemed Meeks was being grabbed almost all night as well.

I think it’s funny that the guy that flopped on Meeks’ game winner was called for the block. Poetic justice … I think:)

Porter played solid, I thought.

As a team, I believe they committed only 11 TO’s, and they had 8 at half.

IRISH

Haven’t followed ND this year, I know they have Harangody – but who else carries them?? I hope they aren’t another 3pt shooting team. Patterson vs Harangody is going to be an awesome matchup!!

Patterson played 20…

NICE JOB CATS!

Didn’t think I cared about the NIT but that was a good game. Creighton is a good team and to beat them on the road in a tough back and forth game should be a confidence builder. The Kentucky offense still seems very stagnant because no one except for Meeks can break down the defense off the dribble and Meeks is not exactly the best ball handler in the world either. On defense they still seem to be giving up too many open 3’s, which seems to happen less when Porter is out.

Body language by Meeks and Patterson suggests to me that they are both staying. If they do I think UK will not only be top 10 but top 5.

by chrisgettlefinger on Mar 23, 2009 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Kentucky's name made a difference

They may say that our brand has lost some luster but Creighton seemed intimidated by KENTUCKY on the jerseys IMHO. They tightened up at the charity stripe like my brother in law when the waiter brings the check.

But that doesn’t take anything away from this win. We had a million reasons to fold and they fought tooth and nail. I love to see finally reward their effort with execution.

Bring on the Irish!

I don’t get people having a problem with his play. To me, he’s the guy you’ve got to have at least one of on your team—to break out my fave sports cliches, the kid’s got heart, and he is such a hard-working, blue collar kind of player.

What a gutsy win. I was on pins and needles the entire game. Now I can breathe.

by kykat51 on Mar 23, 2009 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

With the idea of BCG getting one more year. This team needs time to mature, and also to add some pieces. It makes no sense to me to make a change at this moment. I think it will set us back a good 3/4 years by the time we get a new coach, recruit and go through all of that again. At some point, you have to allow your program to settle down, let your players mature and grow.

That is still my vote. Not that Mitch and Lee will listen……

Best gritty win

I have seen from Kentucky in a long time! My wife and I were trying to remember the last time the Cats won a game like that and never went on very big run at any time during the game.

The difference is that we never let Creighton go on a big one either!

Good win

No one should snub their nose at Creighton – that’s a good team with a solid recent history and this was a terrific win by the Cats. I have a number of thoughts, but as this is a celebration thread, I’ll wait until the actual PM to share them (I’m sure you’re all waiting with baited breath).

Patterson getting 2 quick fouls in the first half might turn out to be a blessing in disguise, he’s going to need to be BIG against ND – I like the chances of that happening.

I’m also not in the least bit concerned about Jodie, Creighton did a really good job defending him but he didn’t let it get in his head and he didn’t force anything. Great job by the other guys to step up – particularly in the first half. BCG was able to keep Patterson on the bench because the other guys on the floor wouldn’t let Creighton pull away.

I like important stuff just as much as the next guy, but please, for a little while, deliver us from meaning, baseball. That's your greatest glory, and we thank you for it very, very much. -- Craig Calcaterra

by JLeverenz on Mar 23, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

After thinking about it myself......

I think Coach may have been resting Meeks a little. Not that we are so good that we can let him, but we stayed close the whole game and Meeks didn’t have to be out there. Late in the second half he stepped up, starting scoring and won the game for us. U had me fooled Meeks. I’m sorry I doubted u!!!! :)

by UKfan79 on Mar 23, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

I don’t think the contributions of the other players to keep the game so close in the first half can be overstated. That’s 2 games in a row where UK has had significant help from the non-Meeks/Patterson contingent and it’s made a big difference.

Gillispie might not be as crazy as I thought, talking about how this team is close to putting it all together. To be sure, there were a number of things to be unhappy about tonight but this isn’t the thread to talk about them.

sounded to me like the idiot reporter prefaced his question with

“some of the fans just want the season to be over”

i cannot imagine ANY true fan wanting the season to be over – not matter what they think about this team or its coach.

Patterson has said a couple of things over the last month or so ...

… that could be taken as jabs at some UK fans.

Hey, these guys have been booed on their home court more than a couple of times over the last few years. It wouldn’t bother me in the least if they said “screw off” to the fans. I know when I was in my early 20’s I would not have been shy about sharing my displeasure about how some fans behave.

His reply was

“no matter what the fans say….” not “no matter what those (or some) fans say…”. That’s my concern – him equating the grumbling of the damn vocal minority with the sentiments of the whole fan base.

by hoboat33 on Mar 23, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

ok - got you

agree – hopefully they realize it is a vocal minority.

i actually called the athletic office (actually the bball office) before the unlv game and told her i just wanted the team to know i was pullling for them and wanted them to win. she said thank you and sort of acted surprised but said she would pass the message on to the team. she acted genuinely happy to get the call.

so you are right that it is a concern that they paint us all with the same brush…..we just have to do something about it.

Amen!!!

but you know, we just assume that any logical person knows that it is just a vocal minority that is grumbling. sometimes we need to make the effort to be heard…

surely they saw the crowd at MC vs unlv and knew that was everything that is GREAT about uk fans…………

by memphis wildcat on Mar 24, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Vocal Minority

Ok – everyone KNOWS that I am very very PRO Gillispie. I think I may have said that on here a couple of times ;)

The thing is though that in Lexington it really doesnt seem to be a minority. I know that people tell me that it just seems like a large part of the fanbase because of the media, etc, but just about everyone I talk to is very anti-Gillispie. Even after the win at Memorial the talk “on the street” was still that he should go. Yes – Memorial was loud and the crowd was very hype, but it still doesnt change the fact that some of these same fans booed them at Rupp more than once. These guys are human and how could you not be a little put off by the fact that one day fans are booing you and calling for your coaches job and the next they are cheering and rethinking their stances. It wears me out so I know how it has to feel to them.

As far as the “vocal minority” of fans go, it is absurd to me that people that were dogging Billy out hours prior to the game came out changing their tune to “well maybe one more year” after last night’s win. If those types of feelings can turn on a dime just like that then they could not have possibly been that strong in the first place. That is my concern with Barnhart. There are a lot of fickle fans out there with very loud voices, but you simply can not make that a factor in any decision right now as want they want might not be the same from one game to the next.

I believe in Billy G.

by kentuckygirl0724 on Mar 24, 2009 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

you have a fair point...

and are probably right – we have a lot of fans that will jump on the bandwagon of the day – either the “far billy” or the “one more year” bandwagon, depending on the most recent result.

at the end of the day, it will come down to a few fans – ie, the ones with the real money.

hate to sound so cynical – as i have in earlier posts – but barnhard is not listening to you and me – which may be good or bad

by memphis wildcat on Mar 24, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not in Lexington

or even around many UK fans so the “minority” may have just been wishful thinking.

Yes, I was, am and will be pro BCG for at minimum one more year (rather have a guaranteed two) and expect Barnhart realizes the fickle nature of some of the fans as you point out. Some of these fans are going to get a broken leg jumping on and off the bandwagon. I guess, rational thinking is out the window. Fan -→ fanatic.

by hoboat33 on Mar 24, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Good one JL :)

I think they played a “triangle and two” for one possession … Woodchopper or whatever his name is, made a three.

I only noticed because the TV showed G making a “triangle” sign with his hands, and then Porter signaled the defense to his teammates by making the same sign.

The possessions only lasted about 7 or 8 seconds after Creighton crossed the mid-court line, so you could say it was a quick look at G making an “adjustment” :)

by Ken Howlett on Mar 24, 2009 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I saw it too

At one point, as Creighton brings the ball up the floor, you see Gillispie make a triangle sign with his hands, then the team actually played a triangle and two for one possession until they gave up an offensive rebound and put back. I think that sealed it for the zone for the rest of the year.

by aidanpryde18 on Mar 23, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I was coming home from work

listening on the radio very early in the second half, and Leach and Pratt were like , “wait a second…dare I say it, but…that looks like a zone!!” So yeah, apparently it was. And they say Coach G isn’t flexible.

by blue kentucky girl on Mar 23, 2009 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Saw the triangle sign from coach also

TV said halftime stats were:

Exciting, hard fought nail biter. We managed to finish this game! Feels great!!! Although, when Meeks grabbed the jersey…it could have been called an intentional foul…we dodged a bullet. Creighton tighten up at the line at the end of the game.

ND will not be an easy game. Big East games have prepared ND for tough games. I still like our growth since the SEC tournament. NIT is a great tournament for this young team.

I wouldn't have said it two weeks ago...

but I kind of agree. This is preferable in my view to Kentucky making the NCAA and probably losing in the first round. No one gains anything from that. We gained more from this game tonight on a hugely hostile court than we would have playing at some random neutral site.

I hate to say it, because the streak came to an end, but I can’t really complain. A deep tourney run of any kind is better than an early exit when it comes to experience. Bragging rights be damned.

if my numbers are right

Before tonight, UK was 1-8 this year against top-100 3-point-shooting teams.
Creighton was a better 3-point-shooting team than any of those opponents.
Notre Dame is better than Creighton.
Go Cats! Shut down the trey!

Perry

Perry is a basketball question mark? Perry kills us..then he comes back and redeems himself. Perry did both this evening. He makes so many mistakes…travels, poor ball handler, at times hands of stone but on the other side he has a heart of a lion, blocks well, will hit a 12 footer once or twice a night, understands his role-hits most of the assists from PP, honest about his mistakes to the media… which Perry will you get?

by blue oregon on Mar 23, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

He's A Good Player

He scores, rebounds, plays defense, passes, block shots.

He deserves better than he gets from some.

He kept UK in the game until Meeks got going.

Missed passes due to "too much butter during the pre-game meal"

according to Perry at the press conferences. Love Perry, he’s hilarious!! 8’)

Very good Kentucky ball player. Looking forward to him being more aggressive and competing the rest of this season and the next!

Diet

Are you writing about the infamous “butter” sandwich? This is what I meant earlier. Perry has a healthy perspective (at times humorous) about his short comings? Even though, he lives around and plays basketball with such a tough audience.

by blue oregon on Mar 23, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

perry - when asked in the post game interview tonight about

missing the pass from porter responded he had too much butter in the pre game meal.

i was hoping he was eating MORE butter and put on a few pounds!!

More Perry humor

LHL is reporting that Perry gave a look at Coach BCG a with a “deadpan” response said that he did not know that Coach’s job was on the line.

by blue oregon on Mar 24, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

meh

Yeah, Perry had a double-double, but he made a lot of bonehead plays too. I like the kid, but the occasional d-d isn’t going to change the fact that he needs to play better.

Perry Stevenson

3rd in scoring, 2nd in rebounding, 1st in blocked shots, 2nd in FG % shooting on Cats this year.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 23, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Frankly, that says more about the other guys than it does about Perrry

Don’t get me wrong – he’s a valuable player and I’m glad he’s on the team. He absolutely deserves to be at UK and they would be worse without him. But he makes a lot of mistakes that he just shouldn’t be making and the occasional good game doesn’t make those issues suddenly irrelevant.

Anyway, this is a celebration thread so I don’t really want to get into it here.

Right Here

Nice game from Stevenson as compared to, well, Stevenson. My perception is that his net production — points, rebounds, blocks minus turnovers, turnovers attributed to others to which he contributed, missed rebound blockouts (not to mention defensive errors), blown layups — would barely be positive. That he ranks as high as he does on the team is a sad and telling commentary on UK’s overall talent level.

Weasel

I guess you and 40 have had some “words” before? Are you just winding 40 up ? Since this is a Kentucky basketball celebration thread, are you celebrating a well deserved Kentucky win? Or are you for really with another team?

Wild Weasel

Is a UK fan no doubt about that. He and Forty are at odds with another situation.

I am sure WW is glad to see this win just like the rest of us.

He's A UK Player

And deserves your support, whether he has a Double Double or not.

Simple as that.

But I agree, the 2008 recruiting class has few UK caliber recruits. I still support them in Blue.

What is this I “hear” ? Some credit to the Coach Wooo Hooo! GO CATS!!!!!

I swear – I thought I was going to pass out at the end of that game! ;)

Coach Billy G

Not a BCG hater. However, still unclear why Billy had Jodie sit so long (6 minutes) at the 17 minute mark of 2nd half? As it turns out now, both Jodie and Patrick sitting so much of this game will be helpful since the turnaround for ND is only 2 nights.

by blue oregon on Mar 23, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Billy's Got Plans

He’s ALWAYS thinking. I really believe there is a method to his madness. We may not always be able to see it, but its there.

I think a lot had to do with other guys stepping up

Creighton was defending Jodie tough and the other players were filling the void. I think it was a good idea to get him some rest at the beginning of the half so that he could be strong at the end. BCG was able to do that because other guys were keeping the game close, if Creighton had gone up 8-10 points, Jodie would have come back in earlier. Fortunately it never got to that point.

In their time-out huddle it was probably something like

“Gee coach, Jodie and Pat aren’t in – who are we supposed to guard?”

by hoboat33 on Mar 23, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

or maybe bcg does it to lower their defenses -

’gee – jodie and pp are not in the game, guess we can slack off on defense."

then when they come back in – the other team has forgotten to play defense and we sneak a few in…

by memphis wildcat on Mar 24, 2009 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

defensive strategy

The ole change up. BCG is always thinking ;)

by blue oregon on Mar 24, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Funny how that worked out. 8')

Also, I think he likes to sit Jodie to motivate him as well as rest him. Jodie plays his best coming off the bench. Fatigue is also a factor because Jodie absolutely BUSTS HIS BUTT out there on offense, even when he’s not productive.

Season

ESPN made a good point in saying that if you flip the buzzer beaters by Louisville, South Carolina, and LSU we’re in the Dance and who knows what would have happened there. True we should have had more wins with the talent level, but Patterson’s finger hampered him much of the year and he still doesn’t look right to me. So we still haven’t seen a full season of a healthy Patterson. Also, did bigskycat get the gig because of her legs?

Also, great game last night, huh? Exciting, thrilling, edge-of-your-seat nervousness — it had it all. Good win, can’t wait for Wednesday and those Irish! : )

Game Wednesday will be fun to watch. I need to find a good excuse to get out of my second job so I can watch it…….if I were living in Kentucky I’d probably be covered, as it is…..I may be pooched.

anyone notice this from the article mentioned above?

Said Carter: “I thought I had position but the refs made their decision. I don’t think the ‘and-one’ should have been called at that point of the game.”

A foul is a foul regardless of what time is on the clock.

i've been waiting for this moment all my life...but it's not quite right.
