Konner Tucker Interview Highlights and Stats
I listened to an interview with Konner Tucker, and drew these highlights therefrom:
“You know, they want me to come in here [UK] and play a little bit of the Point Guard position and play on the wing just like I have in high school and at Lon Morris -- just whatever happens throughout the game. They didn’t promise me any starting position.”
He conceded that some fans considered him unworthy of a UK offer, but said he would just work hard and show them they are wrong.
“I definitely have no doubt that I’ll be playing next year.”
He was asked to describe himself, and said, “I feel like I’m a point guard [who] can score. I look to make good decisions.”
He also said he had the impression that both Meeks and Patterson were returning from what he could tell, and that everyone expected big things from the team once the new folks got shuffled in.
He seemed like he was tired, or on a sedative, or perhaps just not too glib. This is no Jeff Sheppard, but does seem much more mature than a Ramel Bradley. He did seem to be a very confident, almost cocky guy, which would jive with his high school coach’s claim that he is very aggressive with a very competitive nature.
This past season at Lon Morris College Konner shot 83.5% from the free throw line and got there an awful lot (111 out of 133). He also shot 42.4% from the three-point zone (hitting 73 out of 172). His 72 assists against 57 turnovers is not that impressive, although I'm told he has played a lot at the wing, rather than the point. His team roster shows another guard (a Brian Wanamaker) averaging 4.2 assists per game. I assume that guy’s getting a lot of time at the point as well, inasmuch as Tucker is a freshman, after all.
Tucker has 27 steals but apparently no blocks on the year.

Interesting quotation from Tucker's coach:
“He’s a confident young man,” Dotson said. “He’s one of those guys who fits with everybody. He’s got the ability to be good and fit in with the guy who thinks he’s good and is not.”
I will resist the temptation to suggest that BCG is recruiting him to fit in with a certain failed recruit from Findlay.

Maggard did it.
Can’t remember which of his sites I found it on. Might still be there.

Clipped From Hoopmasters
"I grew up here and still have friends and family here," Tucker told the Courier-Journal. "It’s perfect for me. I remember growing up and going to games at Rupp and watching them play. It can’t get any better than this."
Tucker averaged 16.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists this year at Lon Morris hitting 42% from beyond the arc. He can score from perimeter, but has really improved his dribble drive game and is really tough when he balances it with solid pull-up jumper inside 15-feet. He is only a freshman (that’s why he’s been under the radar) and will have three years of eligibility with the Wildcats.
He chose Kentucky over interest from Oklahoma State, California, and Marquette.

The word I don't like in that post...
…is interest... I would feel better about the kid if he had actually turned down offers from such schools…
Many schools show interest in kids and never offer…

Just A Word
Hoopmasters uses “interest” whereas others may use “offers” or something else.

Basketball Investment
We’ve just seen proof of the investing axiom: Don’t fight the Fed. Which I transfer to basketball recruiting: Don’t fight the elite. If UK wants to return to the elite of basketball it should follow the proven recruiting strategy of the UNC’s, UCLA’s, Duke’s, KU’s, Memphis’s, et al. Search out the most talented – which overwhelmingly translates to star ranking – players and full-court press them into committing. Such strategy would eliminate resorting to juco ranks and ultra-early gambles. Not happening now for either of two reasons: Gillispie is not comfortable pursuing and engaging such talent or UK has slipped in the perception of such to the point it is not competitive.

I agree 100%
He’s recruiting like he’s still @ Texas A&M or UTEP, and maybe he has to recruit that way… Maybe word is out of how stubborn and erratic he is..? Who knows…

Who knows
maybe word has gotten out that Kentucky does not draw recruits the way it once did. Maybe that the whole program is unstable and unknown at this time. Maybe that the fans are tyrants. Youre right. Who knows…
I believe in Billy G.

I think its obvious that recruits don't think Kentucky first anymore
Legion said as much when he commited. He said that after seeing Joe Crawford at UK, no one in Detroit was interested in attending UK.
Then he attends and fails…
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

And Yet, Glenn Bryant (6-7 Oak Hill HS Foward LEANING To UK For 2009)
Hails from Detroit.
Crawford was the first Michigan recruit to attend UK since the 1970’s.

Preach on!
It’s a shame that our fans would rather be right about a negative than the team win. Too many bandwagon fans with a tyranical attitude are giving UK a bad name.
Show the players, coaches, and program the love they deserve!

McDonalds A-A
Hall signed a whole bunch. Sutton signed a few more. They averaged 22 to 23 W at UK over 17 years.
Pitino signed a few. Tubby signed a few more. They averaged 26 to 27 W at UK over 18 years.

Stubborn and Erratic
I would put many of the BBN right in there also with very liitle or patience to let the Coach get his system into place with recruits.
If UK fires him after 2 years, that to me would be the worst thing in the world for our chance to be successful in UK’s terms. Has it ever been done anywhere else w/o an extreme reason to do so?

Depending on the reasons, I would agree...
But, you never know what goes on behind the scenes…

Recruiting Cycle
UK will always draw recruits because it is UK. That said, recruiting goes in cycles. I once heard it said that recruits follow each others lead often. I believe that. All schools experience this. No one is immune.
There are so many things that we can attribute to percieved holes in our line up but I tend to believe recruiting cycled down (across the span of two coaches neither completely responsible) and is already on the up-swing. Also, when players leave a team or are injured then that creates holes in positions that noone can account for. I am too exhausted and not near qualified enough to grade Coach G’s recruiting efforts thus far. I know it would only be fair to grade him on a curve. He has had only one full recruiting season and the starting point guard position seemed to be taken (By Jasper) at that time. That must affect recruiting. I know the process of nuturing relationships takes a while. Perhaps he is going the Juco route to fill gaps in certain classes for spacing. I do not know. I am only glad my job does not depend on begging teenagers to come make me look good.
If Konner Tucker is in the Blue and White, I’ll be cheering him on and hope he becomes the next Jeff Shepherd. Furthermore, I hope he gets the rings to prove it!
