Breaking News: Konner Tucker commits to UK

http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/2009/03/tucker-commits-to-uk.html

I'm excited about Tucker. I think he will fit in well at UK.

I like the fact that he shoots a high % from 3-pt range and he has a high basketball IQ. Those two things alone should earn him some playing time next season.

He will be a sophomore next season at UK and joins Vilarino, Orton and Hood in what should be a Top 10 class.

Good News

I don’t know much about this guy. Just heard his name mentioned in the last week or two.

I like the info you have on him though.

by kykat51 on Mar 18, 2009 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

I for one am dubious about this guy

He is supposed to be quite slow. I just can’t see him bringing the ball up the court against SEC caliber competition. Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong.

A little nervous

Now we need two ex-UK scholarship athletes who were otherwise expected to return next year just to fit in all the new guys. It makes me a little nervous to know Coach G is counting on that many coming open. And I gotta agree with Tru about being concerned that this guy is a reach, just based on a lack of hype.

Color me skeptical.

This kid had better be a pleasant surprise, or this could be a nail in Gillispie’s coffin. I have heard squat about him that makes me want to stand up and cheer. For my money, he looks like Michael Porter with a little better handle, but I am willing to be persuaded otherwise.

I think he's a better shooter than Porter too.

Everything I’ve read says he’s not that athletic, but is a good ball handler and shooter, and isn’t afraid to shoot.

I guess I mean that overall, Porter is an okay to good shooter, but he has little confidence.

Porter Averaged Over 40% On 3-Pt FGA In HS

So you might want to compare Apples and Apples.

Tucker played HS ball and JuCo in Texas.

His FG % at UK may be lower than HS or JuCo.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 18, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say that Porter was a bad shooter. Sheesh.

I said he’s an okay to good shooter. He also has little confidence and often passes up wide open looks that any other Div I college basketball guard would take. He’s also not a good ball handler.

My opinion, based on the limited things I’ve read about Tucker, is that he appears to be a better ball handler and better shooter than Porter. That’s my opinion. I’m entitled to it. I don’t really care what Porter averaged in high school. I might be proven wrong. I don’t care. it’s my opinion. I can make whatever comparison I want.

I’ve defended Porter as a shooter for a long time, and I think he is a good shooter. He just won’t shoot much of the time. You don’t have to rain on every parade. There’s a chance next season that our PG options are Galloway (not a shooter), Vilarino (not a shooter as far as I can tell), and Porter (not a good ball handler and won’t shoot). Pardon me for being excited about a PG prospect that can handle the ball AND shoot.

I Didn't Either

But you should compare Tucker’s shooting % to Porter’s HS numbers, not his UK results.

Porter (HS) to Tucker (HS). Why is it fair to compare Porter (HS) to Tucker (JUCO)?

Porter is not a PG.

Recruited as shooting guard and is a good shooter though he sometimes does not display it. We need a floor leader and this kid sounds like one. That’s all I am saying. Disagree if you want.

I agree and that's the point I was trying to make above.

Porter isn’t a good ball handler, which isn’t that big of a deal since he shouldn’t be playing PG. Unfortunately, he is. He hasn’t shown the ability to lead. I’m hoping Tucker can fill that gap, as I hoped Liggins could this year, but hasn’t for many reasons, and as I hope Vilarino will be able to as well.

Distressing Decision

Once again in Gillispie’s mind UK is relegated to the juco ranks for a player to fill an all-important void: PG – Galloway, how’s that worked out? Inside help for Patterson – Harrellson, minimum minutes, minimum production. 0 for 2 isn’t impressive. Yet the underlying concept is, to me, the most doleful of all: Gillispie has not, perhaps cannot, understand the reality of coaching at — well, what once was — a program the caliber of UK. It seems to me he is still recruiting as though he was in El Paso or College Station, having to search out the hidden jewel, having to search in the mesquite, backroads, and hinterlands of basketball prospects rather in focusing on those prospects that are recognized, not necessarily by ranking services, but by other top programs, i.e. how many Konner Tuckers, Kevin Galloways and Josh Harrellsons do you see on UNC, Duke, UCLA, KU (Mario Little being a rare exception) rosters?

Tru scored a perfect bullseye with his description of Tucker likely being Porteresque and the possibility of him being the confirming stamp of disapproval for Gillispie. All in all an apodictic but lamentable commentary on the state of UK BB vis a vis the elite.

by Wild Weasel on Mar 18, 2009 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

I tend to agree

I just don’t see this guy being the answer to our problems and the fact that we would spend a scholarship that we don’t “officially” have worries me. We now essentially have confirmation that three current players (if you consider Williams a “current player”) are leaving the team.

Sadly, this signing just took the good feeling I got from the win yesterday and stomped on it.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

UNC Or Duke RARELY Sign JuCo Players

UCLA once in a while. Kansas has signed a few in recent years.

About 60% of John Wooden’s UCLA players had JuCo experience prior to UCLA. Sidney Wicks and Walt Hazxard are 2 names many would recognize.

Jerry Tarkanian at UNLV also landed more than his share of JuCo recruits.

OTOH Gillispie signed (or verbally committed) these UK recruits:

1. Patterson over Fla and Duke.
2. Legion over Kansas and UCLA.
3. Liggins over Memphis and Kansas.
4. Hood over Duke (et al).
5. Euton over Fla and Duke.

Yes, well. . .

Who knows what Carter may have been were in not for his injuries. Not only did those injuries kill any chance to get PT and experience, but serious, long term shoulder injuries like that had to inhibit his ability to increase his upper body strength.

I think Carter could have been a special player, but he needed to develop very early, and the injuries just kept that from happening.

Dick Gabriel is pretty tied in with the university, and is employed by the Big Blue Network for coverage of various sports (not basketball). He’s pretty close to Barnhart.

I’m not saying it really means anything, but Gabriel is really putting himself out there if he’s wrong, i.e., damaging his employment status for university related entities. The other talking heads haven’t been in that position.

I don’t see him being any better at UK than he is at the JUCO level. Another competent body at PG is not necessarily bad but only time will tell. I will hold out all expectation until I see him play a season at the SEC level.

I agree with others that say he reminds them a bit of Porter and would even through in Josh Carrier. I certainly hope he exceeds both these players in terms of production and value.

IMO

How many of us really pay attention to all of UNC’s and Duke’s etc…‘s recruits? They may very well have some of the same things as we do. Not every player you recruit is gonna turn out to be great. JUCO is a great place for someone to spend a year, get stronger, smarter, and a better team player. We obviously need a point guard, and finding one to come in out of high school and lead this team will be very difficult. So before everyone on here starts calling for this kid’s head, let’s see what he can do. He WANTS to play for UK, that’s a good thing, especially during everything that’s going on. I can not wait until next year when Billy leads this team to better places. How many of u all calling for HIS head will be on his badwagon then. You cannot get rid of coach in two years. If you think this year was bad, then wait til next year if that happens. That’s my two cents worth.

Konner Tucker story

Tucker said UK assistant coach Jeremy Cox has been in contact with him for much of the season and Billy Gillispie came to watch him at a recent game. The UK coaches extended a scholarship offer the next day.

While he’s used to playing the point guard position, Tucker said the coaches told him he would be used at the point and also at the wing.

“They just want me to hit shots and make plays,” Tucker said. “They said I would play right away. I want to make my team better. I’m just so excited because it can’t get any better than to play in front of the best fans in college basketball.”

Awful negative on a kid...

that no one on here has seen play. After our dearth of PG production this year you would think we would be happy to get one. It’s not like too much is left to recruit for the fall. John Wall is not walking through that door.

If he can make good decisions and run the team and not make errant passes, I will take him right now. I don’t care if he’s 5 feet. Did you see the passes we throw from the PG position? Plus, he can score. Give him a shot everyone. What happened to the excitement about recruits around here? It’s like we’re at the Westminster Kennel Club show and Hooch just walked in. Or was that Turner? I get them confused…

Plus they pulled the old “60% free throw shooter loses a contact and must be replaced by the 88% free throw shooter” ploy at the end. They will be tough if they hit better than they did tonight but nothing we have not faced before. I just wish it was here, not there.

I guess Tru

Looks like vince is right

According to kenpom.com 3-point FG’s make up 32.5 % of their scoring and they shoot 38.3% from the arc. That could be extremely dangerous for the cats.

Consider it an opportunity...

to continue to learn how to defend the 3 point line when we need to do so next year. I’m freaking tired of other teams going off on us from 3 for no apparent reason. UNLV went off after we let them have open shot after open shot in the first half which they missed. We actually contested somewhat in the second half and they go crazy.

I wonder how many Cat fans live in Omaha? I bet they will be lining up to get those tickets. I know I would. Maybe we can have a strong representation.

And For Miles Around

Omaha is a reasonably short drive from KC and other areas of the Midwest.

I bet there’ll be plenty of Blue there.

Korver U

I don’t think Creighton will ever run out of Korvers. Kyle (NBA), Klayton, now Kaleb, a soph, and Kirk, a HS senior. All shot the 3, run the floor. Spread the floor type team with coordinated defense that pressures perimeter. BTW, Auburn wins 87-82, Gators 84-62. Anyone watch the Celtics-Heat? Green 112-108 in OT, Heat without Wade, Rondo 26 and 10.

Cats Haven't Played Creighton Since 1930's And 40's

The Fabulous 5 (1948 Cats) beat them but Creighton is one of only 3 teams to beat Coach Rupp’s 1933 Helms Trophy national champs.

UK 7, Creighton 4 all-time.

Thanks to JPS as usual.

Glad on Auburn and Florida.

At least SC is the SEC’s only black eye to this point. I so badly want SEC teams to do well in their respective tourneys. Sick of negative press on SEC BB.

by hoboat33 on Mar 18, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe that we may have several walkon-graduates next year.

Meeks
Porter
maybe some others
Konner and GJ will improve a very poor PG position. It will be the rest of the team’s responsibility to improve their own individual skill sets.
Porter, Stevenson, Harris, Miller, Harrellson, Meeks and Patterson strength and weight
Ball handling the entire team
Foul shooting: Stevenson and Harris

by Blueobsessed on Mar 18, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

Porter Won't Walk-On And DEFINITELY Not Meeks

Porter is going to be a Dad. He can’t afford $10K or $15K college tuition.

THAT Makes Sense

Ryan Saunders (son of ex-NBA coach Flip) gave up his final year at Minnesota and is serving as Grad Asst this season.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 18, 2009 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

If Konner Can Only...

…Bring the ball up the court and throw it to Meeks, Patterson, Orton, Hood or Miller significantly more often than throwing it out of bounds or to the other team (or otherwise turning it over) and play defense….I’ll take him! And until I learn otherwise, in my optimistic mind he is going to be the next Patrick Sparks!

Bluejays Win Despite

Only 5/22 from 3 (22.7%), being out-rebounded 27-33 (3-9 offensive). Did win assists 17-12, typical. Actually won game at FT line 18/22 outscoring BG by 10. Both teams had only 8 turnovers which is characteristic of Creighton. Another 4 guard-lineup team.

by Wild Weasel on Mar 18, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

Anybody...

happy about this recruit? Doesn’t sound like it. Have your doubts, but be optimistic. He may be no more productive than Porter or he might be Patrick Sparks and then some. No information on him is driving some of you crazy and its really kind of funny. Oh the torture of not knowing.

And contrary to some, I believe Liggins will be back. Played 10 minutes last night and played pretty well at that. He said he would be back and why would BG be playing him if he didn’t believe so. I still think he has tremendous upside and if he is willing to stay, BG can mold him.

by the spork on Mar 19, 2009 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

He was recruited by unc

that sounded good enough for me, until i remembered jc was recruited by them too.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if we wake up next season to see liggins as the new jeff teauge

does this mean we won't be able to give a scholarship to darius smith?

thats the kind of pg we need….smart, athletic, great passer. Shooting is a learned skill; basketball iq isnt.

Help me out Forty!

Me and my wife were discussing JUCO transfers to Kentucky, and the only prior one I could think of was Barbour in 2002. Im sure Ive forgotten some, but I lived in So. Cal for awhile, so I kind of lost touch. Any help would be appreciated.

by jager15 on Mar 19, 2009 4:11 AM EDT reply actions

JuCos

I can remember:
(i assume you’re referring to people before Galloway & Harrellson who are on this team)

I can remember: rekalin sims, rodney dent, & nate knight but i feel i’m forgetting a Pitino JC player.

I’m not sure why we go after them – Other than steve francis, I can’t remember a JuCo player who has made a huge impact on the college game like that – but that’s probably just my memory (though dent would have been great if not for his injuries)

by schizm42 on Mar 19, 2009 4:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Larry Johnson

of UNLV was another impact JC player.

by -Zoso- on Mar 19, 2009 6:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Wasn't ...

… Dale Brown a JUCO? He was a pretty important player at Kentucky.

Yes

1st team JuCo A-A at Gulf Coast (MS) JC in 1991.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 19, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Philosophical Question?

Why would a transfer (ie, Macy or “Mu” Evans) be preferable to a JUCO? i guess the question could answer itself given my examples, but just wondering why transfer carries less of a stigma than JUCO…

by memphis wildcat on Mar 19, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Travis Ford, Mark Pope, Derek Anderson, and Heshimu Evans were big facors in 1990’s success.

Patrick Sparks is the only UK transfer (in) during 2000’s.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 19, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Mark Pope

That guy drive me nuts. I’ll never forget the ball off his leg against UCLA that cost hem a win.

by btcoop71 on Mar 19, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Most transfers are coming from a similar level of competition

JUCO’s are not.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Mar 19, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Lots

Rupp had a bunch in 50’s and 60’s – Jon Scott website has a list. Bob Burrow, Vinny del Negro, Art Laib, Adrian Smith are a few names off the top of my head.

Hall, none that I remember. Sutton, also none but Harvey Grant did sign in 1986 (never attended).

Pitino had Rodney Dent and Dale Brown. Tubby had Nate Knight (replaced John Stewart who died) before Barbour.

Thanks

Ok thank you, like I said I was stuck in UCLA country for awhile, and didnt get to follow recruiting or anything. Im just starting to be able to get back into the swing of things. Its kind of like a family reunion. LOL No matter how far you go away, the Big Blue Nation will always welcome you back.

by jager15 on Mar 19, 2009 5:39 AM EDT reply actions

UCLA

About 60% of John Wooden’s Bruins were JuCo transfers.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 19, 2009 6:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Then whats the problem??

Then why so much hatred for Tucker before he has even put on a jersey? Its almost ridiculous at this point. I read the posts every day but dont post alot, but I just dont understand If I remember correctly, Jodie Meeks wasnt highly recruited out of high school, because he couldnt shoot. Give theses kids a chance before damning them. If they suck once they get here then by all means vent your frustrations, but at least give them a chance to prove themselves.

And BTW thank you forty for the info… you are the best!!

by jager15 on Mar 19, 2009 6:12 AM EDT reply actions

U R Welcome

But I’m no better or worse than the rest.

I agree with you that recruits should be given every chance to succeed. Trust the coaches’ judgment.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 19, 2009 6:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I think people have a problem with it because they look at him and see another Michael Porter

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Mar 19, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Porter Was 3-Time All-St And 4 Times In Final 4 During Calif HS Play

Leading scorer in Modesto Christian HS history (over Chuck Hayes, Adrian Oliver, and the guy now on MCHS headed for UCLA).

I’d welcome another Porter.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 19, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm no Porter hater

However, I recognize his limited skillset and realize that another of him next year would be redundant.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
