Tuesday Morning Open Thread
Due to a very busy morning today, I am going to put up an open thread. Discuss:
- UK's chances vs. Las Vegas tonight.
- Michael Wilbon wishing Kentucky never to win again.
- SEC is rejected by the NCAA.

Cats By 5 Tonight
Vegas line is -7.5 so I think UNLV will cover that.
Wilbon, no comment. 3 pounds of (blank) in a 2 pound bag.

Heck yeah.
My dad is a lifetime Sox fan and I a lifetime Reds fan. Don’t like the Cubs. George Bell is my godfather, just kidding.

How Good Are UNLV's Guards?
If they can penetrate, shoot, and defend effectively, Kentucky will likely lose. It’s really that simple when you think about our losses (and inadequacies) this year.
Kinder & Gentler BBN
Somehow the Big Blue Nation needs to become a kinder and gentler community if we are going to be respected by others, including PTI. It is a shame when coach Gillispie last night on his call-in show said to be careful when you are near someone who says something nice about him or you might get caught in a line of fire.
I had a number of public jobs in my life, and I am thankful that others gave me more than two years to grow into those positions. We need to be patient. Hopefully UK will win at least game or two in the NIT to encourage those who are currently lacking patience.
Kinder and Gentler
It amazes me how some have this feeling that if somebody is critical of the coach or the program, they are hurting the perception of UK and its fans. When did it become so wrong to be critical of something? I could really care less what a bozo like Wilbon thinks of UK fans. I know since I have been here on BBN (around 2 months) that I have been critical. But look what has gone on the past couple of months. Just because somebody criticizes BG or the program doesn’t make them any worse of a fan than you. I think most on here, when they do become critical,do so in a polite, intelligent manner. I think when it comes to UK fans there are two ends of the spectrum. On one end,you have those who see everything through blue colored glasses, and on the other end you have those who feel UK should go to the Final Four every year. To me both can be equally annoying. I think the majority fall somewhere in the middle.

(Just in case you missed it in the other thread) I will be showing my support of Coach Gillispie tonight wearing a shirt that simply says, “G The Coach.”

Good for you.
That’s very cool. I don’t really wear t-shirts all that often, but if I did, I would totally buy one of those, too. : )
Also, don’t forget to wear a bit of green (maybe some cute earrings with green or something) for St. Patricks’s Day — I would hate for you to get pinched. : )
If I get Cokes thrown at me
I will be on the news.

Tink, good for you. 'Cause he IS the coach. Hey, come to think about it,
do me a favor, if you don’t mind. Have a moment of silence (just you) for all those guys who sweated in that great place and who DIDN"T make All-American, or even letter on the varsity, for that matter. I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

Wilbon doesn't bother me
He’s just the crazy uncle at the family reunion that says bizarre stuff. I bet even he doesn’t believe half the stuff he says (unlike other blowhards on TV who think the sun rises and sets based on their say so). The “we ran Tubby off” meme is always going to be out there to some degree – people who care about the program know the truth, people who don’t can’t be bothered to find out.
He and Kornheiser still make for interesting television.
C! A! T! S! CATS! CATS! CATS!
He always looks
Lost sitting on the set for NBA stuff. Clearly no athletic talent or clue as to how games are really played, like most sports reporters.
From a Gator fan...
…I agree. We aren’t fans of Wilbon either. But you hit the nail on the head with the crazy uncle comparison. Sometimes stuff comes out of his mouth that’s it’s quite obvious his brain didn’t filter. Half the time I think he’s just saying it to generate buzz.

meh
I feel the same way about Wilbon. I love PTI and I loved Kornheiser’s radio show back when it was on ESPN Radio. I think most of what they say on PTI doesn’t reflect their true opinions, but rather is there to create entertainment.
BTW, speaking of ESPN Radio – talk about something that really went downhill 4-5 years ago. It used to be a great lineup with Kornheiser in the morning, Chris Moore and Chuck Wilson in the evening, and Bob Valvano late night. Now it just sucks all around.
I like important stuff just as much as the next guy, but please, for a little while, deliver us from meaning, baseball. That's your greatest glory, and we thank you for it very, very much. -- Craig Calcaterra
I disagree
I like Mike and Mike in the morning. Colin Cowherd is a bit of a blowhard, but does kick up a hornets nest every now and then. I like Tirrico and Van Pelt and the Scott Van Pelt show is okay. As we get into the evenings, I don’t care much for Doug Gottlieb, but the fill in guys like Eric Koselias are okay.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Mike and Mike are okay
I also like Tirico and Van Pelt. Don’t get me started on the colossal waste of planetary resources that Colin “Coward” (I swear that’s what his last name sounds like every time I hear it pronounced) represents. He is absolutely devoid of anything like competent, rational thinking and his utter lack of knowledge about anything would make a preschooler blush.
I like important stuff just as much as the next guy, but please, for a little while, deliver us from meaning, baseball. That's your greatest glory, and we thank you for it very, very much. -- Craig Calcaterra
media = redundant
If they tell you the same crap over and over and over and over again, they hope you’ll be like a dumb sheep and believe it. Not just ESPN, all media for that matter.
Man I hope the Cats win tonight.
Wilbon seems to speak before he thinks....
During the same program, he advocated government intervention into the NCAA Tournament because not enough mid-majors were selected…. PUH-LEASE!
And tried to make an
antitrust restraint of trade argument. It’s obvious he hasn’t read the Sherman or Clayton Acts.
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.
--O.W.
On Government Intervention
Just what we need. The government could inject itself into our leisure activities, like viewing and rooting for our favorite sports teams, just like they have in our economic circumstances. Uhhhhh, Representative Frank what do you think of playing zone against the 3-point shot? PLEASE!!!!!
Hrmmm...
I thought he was against government intervention in the BCS a few months ago, I may not recall correctly.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Wilbon
While his “I hope they never win again” and “Running off Tubby” statements were a bit much. I cant help but feel a little of what he is saying. I have said countless times that I have never been so embarssed by a (seemingly) large porition of our fanbase. I mean – REALLY embarassed by a lot of them! I think that many of them sound absolutely ridiculous and are coming off totally unreasonable and classless. I, too, feel for our Coach right now. On this aspect of things – I hate to say it, but I agree.

5%
You are probably right. That’s why I said “Seemingly large.” It just seems like there are SO many and that it is that 5%’s voices that are getting out all over the place.
I think you and Forty are probably right about it actually being a small number and it seems bigger because internet and media magnify it. Still – embarassing nonetheless.

If it bleeds it leads
Remember, you all are the people who buy it, read it, watch it and listen to it. I can tell you as a journalist myself, we read blogs to find what people are talking about because obviously, you’ll buy a paper if we hit on something that’s hot. That’s why I say the fan negativity has fed the press, which has in turn fed the lack of confidence for this team. I’ve always said I would rather do positive stories, but the sad truth is only a minority of people want to read about it.
But it's not like
We weren’t like this 20 years before Billy G got here. I still support him and think he needs at least one more year, but the heat has been here forever. You have to know if you don’t succeed these things are going to happen and if you can’t deal with it, don’t take the job. That said, I think Billy G can deal with it fine. But I can’t say that I really feel sorry for him or agree with Wilbon who is basically trying to play the race card with the Tubby deal, it’s pretty obvious.
the
way that I feel about the “hope we don’t win” thing………..you aren’t a fan if you think that. I true fan hope this is a turning point for the Cats.

SEC - Trent Johnson said it best:
“I said, ’Guys, we put ourselves in that situation.”
He was talking about LSU, but his statement could equally apply to all the SEC teams that thought they were NCAA worthy.
LSU failed to beat anybody out of conference who was any good and they were just 2-3 against the RPI Top 50.
Tennessee played a great non-conference schedule, but failed to follow up in conference.
Auburn had no chance at an at-large. Like LSU, they played a weak non-conference schedule and failed to beat any of the few good teams they did play (Xavier, Northern Iowa, Dayton).

A Little Bit At First And Towards The End
33-21 his first 2 years.
246-66 (79%) from 1975 through 1984. In those 10 years, Hall’s teams won NCAA and NIT titles, were NCAA runner-up, made 3 FF and 5 Elite 8 plus 6 Sweet 16 appearances, AND won 7 SEC titles.
18-13 his last year.
by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 17, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions
And Yet Those 10 Years
Bought him very little “sympathy” from some fans who only focused on 1985 results (18-13, no SEC title or SECT championship).

but the real question is...
will we win tonight? What do you really think? I just can’t call this one way or the other, myself with our history of unpredictable play.
I
know……….the one thing that concerns me is apparently this is a three point shooting team which we have had trouble winning against. I think though that the Cats have an advantage as far as atmosphere. I am hoping that the roaring crowd gets them pumped.

Yeah
you might need to do that :). I have to dye my hair blue today and meet my girls for ice cream tonight. I told them if they got twenty rebounds at the last game I would dye my hair blue…………they got thirty! So I have to keep my word. Anything that works is what I say as a coach :)
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
oh
and they were averaging only seven or eight a game before this
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
My game prediction
I predict that Perry Stevenson gets called for traveling at least once per half…….
Which I am fine w/
as long as he gets 5 blocks.
I would go
But spending my hard earned dollars to support a NIT team is not something I can do. Yes, I still support the team but showing up for this is almost like saying it’s OK to be in the NIT, and it’s not. The day we decide going to the NIT is cool will truly mean the end of a tradition. I understand most don’t feel that way and that’s fine, I will probably watch the game and want us to win but I will be saving my money for something else. If you read the comments of the players you can tell they don’t want to be there, and they’re probably only playing because they have to.
shoot
daniel I would pay the money just to feel that rushing blood going through my veins as the fans go nuts for their Cats. See I have never gotten to go to a Rupp game. All the games I have been to have been away, well two games I went to was when they were in Nashville for the tourney in 2003. and that was like a home game but not Rupp. I feel some of you don’t realize how lucky you are. Its the one place I want to go before I die………not Australia, not cruise around the world, Rupp Arena during a game.
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
Understand that.
Hope you get to go, too. When I covered UK during college I got to sit on the floor behind the goals. It was amazing, the first time you get to walk on that floor, hard to describe. Then you look up and it seems like fans are growing on top of each other.
Don't know when your birthday is
Why don’t you give a hint to your hubby about a trip to a Rupp game next season? Or even for a Christmas present. That’s how my baby sister got to see many games during Pitino’s years :-)
I would
love that, but right now my kids basketball season takes up so much time. We both coach so its hard for us to miss a game. I am thinking next year I want to go to a December game. That is a great idea,I think I will tell him I want an early xmas present :)! Thanks
I don't care who is coach as long as Kentucky is Kentucky!
Never saw a game in Rupp
I was shown the grand tour ay a security guard that used to work in Paducah. He turned on the lights and even took us through the dressing rooms and the coaches office. They have hand dryers bolted up high on the walls to dry players hair
Joe B
I truly believe Joe B preserved the program. He brought us into the modern era by successfully recruiting the black players that Rupp could not get to commit. I was at UK all during the 70s and the pressure on Joe B was pretty much like what Billy G has on him, IMO. He was very successful after a slow start, and I hope that Billy can be as well.
That said, I don’t much like our chances tonight, based on what I’ve read about the Rebels. They sound like they’re built along the South Carolina lines.
I remember the Hall years.
I never understood why he got so much flack. People would complain about not winning a title with all of the talent that he had on the team. He just kept winning games though.
If you use the firefox browser there is a built-in spell checker

It’s saved me from more spelling mistakes than I can count. In addition to the spell checker, Firefox is the awesomest browser ever!

Manual override
It makes spelling suggestions. You’re still free to make up new words as necessary (and you can add them to the dictionary so they don’t get flagged anymore!)
switch browsers
HI OldCat,
Change to another browser. You are probably using Internet Explorer. If you use mozilla’s firefox, you will get a spell checker. And you don’t have to abandon IE, because for some things, IE is best. (Example: you can’t download new templates from MS except through IE). Keep them both in place and use the one that suits your need. (I use Firefox 90% of the time)

LOL - I have been using the tried and true KY Bourbon inspired method! ;)
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
I have my bracket in... but I have another one that is sure to dominate...
Last night I sat down with my girlfriend’s five year old daughter and had her pick the entire field. There is a slight problem in the fact that she had Stephen F. Austin winning… but I’ll be honest, if I take the game where she has them beat Oklahoma and push the Sooners through to the title instead, its actually not a bad bracket. (Plenty of odd upsets though… who knows?!!?)
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Nice, Seven…
….a little trash-talking is just what we need.
Also, regarding prizes for the ASoB bracket challenge, just look at what I found from last year — according to this link it looks like Tru did in fact promise prizes for this year’s winners. I wonder what he had in mind?
I’m going to throw out a suggestion just to help out a little and do my part – I strongly recommend bourbon. It’s always a classic choice, it’s good warm, it’s good cold, it’s good with friends, it’s good when you are alone, it’s good when you get home from work after a crappy day, it’s good after a win or loss — and best of all, it’s a prize that works for both males and females. Yep, the prizes should most definitely be bourbon. ; )
I think we need ASOB T-Shirts!
Maybe even a place to put our user names. Of course, we might be shocked to see what each other actually look like. ;-))))
I make the look, regardless :)
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
Comes up a lot
Tru is working on it, but he said something about trying to make sure the print quality is good, so it’s just taking some time. Just like Tru to accept nothing less than the best! ;) I would also like to see a place for the user name.
I know someone who could help make the shirts.
He is in the screen printing business and design. Used to work in radio here in Lexington.
I am sure Tru has a source as well – just offering.
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Was it Fortunatas sp?
That Tru mentioned earlier had everything laid out and Tru was just waiting on a nice graphic from SB Nation? He is a member here. No, I don’t think that’s the member. But whoever Tru mentioned is a member.
Over at Athleticsnation we have t-shirts
Actually there have been several different versions. I love mine and they are quite popular among the members. I think ASoB t-shirts are a good idea too.

We have to expect this type of stuff for now....
Everyone in the country is going to take a shot at us while we are “down”. Remember that this atrocity is only taking place because we lost more than 5 games this year. An honest assessment says we lose 7 games under normal circumstances, maybe. This too shall pass, with or without BCG.We lack swagger and confidence as well as more than enough cojones ot get the job done. Look for this to change next year
Remember, were having fun now!!!
Honest Assessment
UK played 33 games this season. At the “normal” 76% rate, UK would have been 25-8 this season.

The thing is....even if we don't win tonight, which I hope we do...........
…it will put this season to bed and we can begin prepping for next year.
