Give Coach Billy Gillispie Time
Past Coaches were given as much if not more time. We ought to give Coach Gillispie another year or two as well.
Anybody who has ever played any kind of organized sport at a high level knows that a coaching change is never easy for a program, and that includes players, fans, as well as coaches. The University of Kentucky, prior to Coach Gillispie's hiring, had been under the charge of one coach for ten seasons. As such, a coaching change the likes of which took place in 2007, with Coach G.'s being brought on, is not a transformation that can result in wins overnight.
Case in point is my own Collegiate Sports experience. I played NAIA football for a program that had been under one coach for its entire 11-year existence up to that point. While the founding coach had garnered winning seasons and Conference Championships, as well as having VERY talented players, by the time of his last year (my first year as a player), the program was going in a direction that was less than satisfactory. That year, this founding coach's last season, we went 2-8. At the end of that season, the founding coach resigned, and another coach promoted from within. Under the new coach, our football team went 3-27 in his first three seasons. There were some who doubted his hiring, wondered if our team would ever become winners. Then, in the new coach's fourth year, our football team went 6-3-1, and received its first-ever bowl apearance. The next year, the team went 8-2-1, and entered the playoffs for the first time in school history. This coach later went on to have teams that won three conference championships, and appeared in three more playoffs and two more bowl games at the end of the next six seasons respectively.
All this to say that a coaching change is never easy, especially when the new coach is taking over for a tenured former coach. Results should not be expected overnight, nor even in the first two years. Coach Gillispie is doing his best with players -- as was written in a previous artivcle by A Sea Of Blue's Staff -- who seem to not be following his instructions, and are, at best, very immature.
Give coach Gillispie another couple of years. Giving him two more years will allow the Freshman class recruited by his predecessor to mature, and will allow his first recruting class to do the same. It will also give his players the full gammut of his coaching philosophy, something that cannot be attained in just two years.
I for one believe that Coach G. will do the job expected of him. I believe that he is the right choice, the right pick, and the right coach for the University of Kentucky Basketball Program. He has turned around two schools that were mid-level and mid-range at best, and made them contenders. Kentucky is so much better. Imagine what he could do with UK Basketbal if given the time? To fire him, in my humble opinion, would be a colossal mistake.
If he does fail and flop in the next year or two, I will be the first in line to eat my words, and to take a good dosage of crow.

Yep, change is hard.
And continuity is essential.

Agreed to a point
I don’t believe Kentucky would get rid of Billy this year. He will be given another year to prove himself and rightly so. The troubling thing is that based on the last month of watching this team I have seen no progress. Actually I feel like we are worse off today than we were the day Billy took command. Regardless of how “good” we are I need to see continous improvement to remain a BG supporter. Even in games lost good teams/coaches learn and improve we have not in my opinion. Hopefully we will. I hope Billy is not as pesimistic about being a coach in Kentucky as he seems to be on camera he’s more likely to survive is he has a positive outlook on being the coach of the best program in history.

??
Everyone says to give Billy time -Just like they all said to give tubby time-10 years with no results(can’t count the ‘98 season on tubbys resume’ cause it was a pitino hand down team).I don’t see anyone saying they were wrong about tubby or eating their words when clearly they should. To me it is the same thing I am hearing now as I heard back in ‘99 and 2000.Should we wait another 10 years for people to realize this? That will only be 20 years in between-ACCEPTABLE???-I am sorry but not to me.I don’t expect us to win all the time but at least get better as the year goes on-We looked worse the further the season went. Is a winning season based on winning more games than you lose or how far you go and what is learned along the way?

Leaving Out Names
I’m glad UK gave the coach more time in 1991. He only won 36 games in 2 years.
I’m glad UK gave the coach more time in 1974. He only won 33 games in 2 years.
I’m glad Uk gave the coach more time in 1932. He only won 31 games in 2 years.
Leaving out 1998 at your request, UK was 228 (25.3 W) – 79 (8.8 L) from 1999 through 2007 with 3 Elite 8, 5 Sweet 16, 4 SEC titles, and 4 SECT championships.

Facts are Facts- This is 2009
Billy Gillispie can not coach in game! Actions speak louder than words. He is out of his league. He needs to go to Division 2. UK should have won 6 more games if coached appropriately. Hell, we have young men from Kentucky that outcoached him. Enough said. How embarrassing for the university. The WINNINGEST TEAM OF ALL TIME IN NCAA HISTORY. Enough. President Todd, do something. I am not the only alum that feels this way. Thousands do!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe thousands do
If you read all the stuff on the blogs.
But the fact is that there are more than thousands of UK fans who have a different opinion than you do about the current situation. I am not a UK alum but I can see the future of the program if Coach is let go after only 2 years. It would be a disaster that even you would not expect with all your high expectations for UK basketball.

Then what..?

In Response to "Maybe thousands do."
I would like for you to understand that I am not being negative, only factual. With the other programs one must understand, no where in the league of UK. The conferences were no were in the league of the SEC. Even this year with the league being a little down, SEC teams could still have competed with Coach Gillispie’s best teams. After researching last night, his schedule at those schools was ranked around the 100’s in the country. Consequently, when coaching at a top school, you must have PERSONALITY TO RECRUIT GOOD PLAYERS. The calibur of player this day and time is unbelievable. Darius Miller should have been averaging at least 10 points a game. He is considered one of the players coming out the South. I’m very PROUD OF OUR PLAYERS considering the drama this year. Once again, I’m only posting facts. LAST POINT, LSU HAS A FIRST YEAR COACH AND HAS ACCOMPLISHED MORE THAN COACH G. AND GETTING PAID 1/2 THE SALARY AND DOES NOT HAVE THE MOST ADVANCED PRACTICE FACILITY IN THE COUNTRY AND PROBABLY THE WORLD. DARIN HORN’S FIRST YEAR- YEP, I COULD GO ON. South Carolina and LSU are not even on UK’s level—- UNTIL NOW. Thanks!

No way
Gillispie is incompetent. There is something seriously not clicking with this guy. He failed miserably this year. Not being able to make the 64-team NCAA field is totally and uequivocally inexcusable. If he beats VMI and UGA we are in the big dance…both home games, one the opener the other Senior night! For goodness sakes, there is no sense in giving this guy anymore time. The writing is on the wall. Another year is going to be a waste. I say let’s part ways with this loser now and cut our losses and move on.

You'll all be eating your words....
…in a few seasons. Coach G. is a proven coach, as he took UTEP and TAMU and transformed them, not ot mention helping current Kansas U. Coach Bill Self transform Tulsa when they were both on staff there. Getting rid of him, forcing him to step down, or in any other way, shape, or form, causing Coach G. to leave would be a colossal mistake…

In response to: "You'll all be eating your words....."
No offense, you are simply partial to this Coach as we all would love to be. Winning is winning and he’s not doing it. You’re saying, “TULSA” — AS I REMEMBER, TUBBY SMITH ALSO COACHED SUCCESSFULLY AT TULSA. LOL President Todd has already made the statement that he is going to sit down with Mitch Barnhardt after the season and see where the program is and heading. With 24,000 fans attending games for support and the monetary gate, I think they have and always will listen to the fans. President Todd understands the millions of dollars that are donated to the university due to the basketball program. THOSE ARE THE FACTS! The Kentucky Tradition will not be brought down. Trust me on that one, that is, however, my opinion. Thanks!

I think the "proven coach" is a stretch
He’d been a head coach for only 5 years prior to UK.

A Proven Coach, yes....
Coach G. turned aorund the TAMU Aggies and the UTEP Miners, both programs being losers when Coach G. took over. TAMU made the NCAAs AGAIN….
