Morning Newspaper: Mississippi State Edition
Tonight, the Kentucky Wildcats take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Rupp Arena. This is a huge game for the 'Cats, as Mississippi State is one of the best teams in the West, and the 'Cats have dropped the last two games, one at home and one away. A three game losing streak with a two-game home loss component would definitely bode ill for the Wildcats going forward.
And now, the news.
Kentucky Basketball News
- UK does not plan to steer away from Jarvis Varnado. Since MSU really has few big people other than Varnado, that makes sense. Varnado can't cheat off his man like he did last year.
- More criticism of UK's recent play, particularly the intelligence of UK's players.
- Can MSU handle Meeks? I think so, they have plenty of guards to put on him.
- This blogger blames Kentucky's recent losing streak on "Gillispie's purposely-eratic substitutions." I don't know if he has a point or not, but UK used to continually criticize our previous coach for the same thing. I think we are just going to have to live with it.
- Gillispie blames Kentucky's recent slide on rebounding and ballhandling. Shocking.
- More on a possible Bob Knight return.
- Blocked shot battle tonight? The Clarion-Ledger thinks so.
- Wildcats Thunder as an MSU preview.
- Psycho.
- Devan Downey is the SEC POW. No surprise there.
Kentucky Football/Other News
- Hal Mumme has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I'm sorry to hear that and hope that Hal beats the disease.
- Sam Simpson took his time before deciding on UK.
NCAA Basketball News
- Yikes.
- #11 Butler loses to ... Wisconsin-Green Bay?
- Louisville gets manhandled by the Huskies. No shame there, the Huskies are mighty good this year.
- Georgia on Knight Watch? John Clay has the links.
- Mark Bradley blasts Bobby Knight, and says Georgia shouldn't hire him. Georgia fans, we suggest you consider the source, and we thank the AJC for getting Bradley out of our Commonwealth -- hopefully forever.
- Kansas is on a roll.
- Summitt is sent back to base camp.
NCAA Football News
- Mr. SEC does a very interesting analysis of recruiting rankings vs. success. We linked a similar analysis long ago that was done by Outside the Sidelines (who now blogs for Roll Bama Roll) that came to a different conclusion.
- Preston Parker sent packing by Florida State. Orange and Blue Hue revels in the schadenfreude.
- OSU lineman goes nuts, tastes Taser. Mmmmm ... Voltage! The SEC butt-whippings have finally driven the Buckeyes off the reservation, I guess.
Other News of Interest
- Newport, Kentucky used to be more sinful than Vegas.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the link to the Kentucky Sports Network blog! This is much closer to my thoughts and feelings regarding our Kentucky team and coaching. Good read!

CLARIFICATION
This is NOT to say that I think our players are stupid or even that they have no basketball IQ. I just think that they have been making very poor decisions and shot selections and I agree with that blogger that those things are something that our Coach really doesnt have any control over – other than putting them on the bench, but heck, someone has to play the game, right??? Just sayin’…

i agree, not that they are stupid, but fundamentals/decisions seem weak
we just seem out of sync. part of me thought early in the season that what KSN was talking about was due to all the subsitutions that BCG was using – in other words, the players were not allowed to get in a rhythm with each other.
in conference play, BCG has slowed the subs some (i know he still pulls in and out alot) and they did get in a rhythm more in early SEC games. we seemed to have regressed a bit.
on his rotations, BCG has slowed the revolving door some since SEC play. he seems to sub a minute or so before the TV to, if he can, knowing he can resub at the TV to. Letting someone come in for meeks at the 9 min mark and then getting meeks back in at the under 8 tv to – for example.

I'm back...
woohoo. Power was restored late last night after almost 7 days of darkness. I didn’t get to see the last 2 games, poor me right? Was very surprised to see us lose 2 straight, but one didn’t really surprise me because of how we played at times against AU and Bama. Oh well, I’m just thrilled to be able to watch the game tonight and finally get up to speed.
Power...
still no power after 1 week..thank GOD for generators…but its just not the same.

Andy Kennedy is a total tool.
And so is his wife. Of course, this is based on his arrest and the ensuing incidents. What a prick.
First time post, from UNC country...
love ASOB…it’s good to get true UK news in Baby Blue country…I’ve lived in NC for 20 years, but bleed True Blue. I witnessed the rapid decline and rise of both UNC and Duke during coaching changes and medical leaves…UK fans IMO are the best and absolutely the worst, comparable only to Alabama or Notre Dame football fans in their insane passion. UK was in a slow burn during the final years of Tubby’s tenure and BCG is working to turn it around, but a little perspective is necessary. All major college programs go through the valleys which is why the mountaintop should be enjoyed. UCLA, Kansas, UNC, Duke, Indiana all missed the NCAA tournament and wondered in the wilderness and some still do, but UK has maintained a level of respect through the transition. BCG is a good coach learning to be great. Our team is a young team and this program has to learn to be great again. It may be hard when you’re in the midst of the storm in Kentucky, and while it’s frustrating, I feel that the program is on the right track. Give BCG time…if he can do it in three years at lesser programs, no reason why he won’t be successful at the greatest college basketball program in the country. We are closer now than we were last year and certainly on the right track back to national prominence, but it was never going to happen overnight….peace.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Welcome....
Good post! Some much needed positive perspective. You’re right, there are going to be bumps in the road and the key is to maintain patience. Something a lot of the more rabid UK fans don’t tend to have. But hell, we all have a serious passion for our program……some just express it much better than others. A two game slide is not the end of the world and I have a feeling this year’s Cats will be just fine. I’m fired up for tonight’s game……………GO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Newport, Kentucky
Having grown up in Ft. Thomas, I have seen alot and the stroies I have heard over the years…wow. In fact my father was a member of the Committee of 500 which you can read more about in the attached links.

I remember hearing all the Newport stories
From my husband who was 13 1/2 years older. He knew a few big time gamblers in this area that went there quite often.
I recall the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in 1977 even more vividly. We had planned to go there one weekend but something happened we could not, most likely a sitter problem.
I had never heard about George Ratterman. What a great athlete and civic minded individual.
Dad Was A Friend Of The Schilling Brothers (Who Owned BHSC)
We went there often for dinner, shows, etc.

Tonight
I am SO ready for the game tonight though I cant help but feel a bit nervous. This is a BIG game! To defeat one of the best teams in the west would be a good win and confidence booster for our team AND OUR FANS.

I am with you kentuckygirl
My thoughts exactly. I cannot even remember the last time I was not nervous going into a game. I suppose it comes with the territory and our passion for UK.
No Internet
Unfortunately I will not have internet access so I will not be able to participate in the live thread or the post mortem until tomorrow. :(

I find it entertaining to go back and read the live thread after a game
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Actually... even this game
Seeing the ebb and flow of the emotions on the board is always fascinating with 20/20 hindsight.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
I'm sure it is.
I just cant do it for this one. Dont want to read all the negativity and coach-bashing that is SURE to be there.

Must win
This is about as “must win” as a game can be on Feb 3. Win, and all is right with the world. Lose and our tournament resume begins to look in serious jeopardy, not to mention the confidence of the players.
C! A! T! S! CATS! CATS! CATS!
exactly -
i am afraid i want this win to quite the mob as much as i do for the tournament resume…..

The mob
I am not sure I can take another week of mob mentality fans. They are on my last nerve at the moment.
Blogging Perspectives
Enjoyed the perspectives of “Glaring Truth” and “Contra Mundum” (Against The World) — was there ever a more relevant title for a UK fan? — thanks to ASoB for linking. While not funditus iucundus (totally agreeable) with either, they have validity but I lean more to Glaring Truth. First to Contra Mundum and its contention that Gillispie’s “purposely-erratic substitutions” is the primary contributor to Cats’ several problems. That description is either, or perhaps both, a non sequitur or a misnomer. I can’t imagine anyone — even a person as enigmatic as Gillispie — being erratic by design. My conclusion is that while Coach’s substitutions may appear to be, or actually be, erratic they are — rather than purposeful — the result of an absence of good choices: play individuals with talent inadequate for the level of competition or play individuals with perhaps — but only peradventure — more talent but less experience. Damned if you do, damned if don’t, if you will.
As for Glaring Truth, it’s contention that, shall we say, basketball stupidity being the root cause of UK’s recurrent problems, I believe has much credibility. Basketball stupidity can be best defined as: deficiency in judgement in matters of the hardwood and for such a failing we know no remedy. Where Glaring Truth misses the point however is that in attributing the shortcomings predominately to the cerebral part of the performance he neglects the real deficiency: overall athletic talent. Fact is UK is an athletically challenged team that is being asked to play in a manner in which it is uncomfortable and incapable, with the expected concomitant outcomes. Until such shortcomings are addressed UK will struggle in its climb back to the realm of college hardwood royalty.
Few All-Around Players
Meeks may come the closest to being an all around good player. He performs all the basic skills of basketball pretty well (not great in all categories but pretty good). He can shoot long, pull up and pop, take it to the rim and finish, dribble, pass, run the floor, rebound, play defense. Patterson has the Big back-to-the-basket skills down, but his play outside the paint is unproven. Miller looks capable of developing into a complete player.
All of our other players lack one or more of the basic skills of playing basketball. Overall, the biggest lack is shooting/scoring.
Jodie can pass???
His turnover to assist ratio is 1.8…not good. Jodie has lots and lots of basketball skills but passing is not one of them. That is a major gap in his ‘NBA skillset’. He could rebound better to given that he and Porter are pretty much equals in rebounds/minute.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
Looking at the stats for Miss State
…. and Ravern Johnson, their leading scorer, shoots 48.2% from 3-pt range. The last 4 games he is red hot making 15-29 for 51.7%. I really hope someone for UK (Harris?) steps up to the challenge defensively. I think shutting him down could be the difference in a win or a loss.
Also, Jarvis Varnado averages about 3 offensive rebounds per game. We have to box out, play smart and fight hard for every rebound.
GBB!!!
Gillispie
Good but inexperienced (unproven) head coach. Very good POTENTIAL.
Not ranked in Top 50 (by career W-L record) by NCAA website.
http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/m_basketball_RB/Reports/DIMBBcoaches.pdf #54 going into this season.
Not in Top 25 (careeer W-L record in NCAA games) either. Would be tied with Pat Kennedy of Towson St at #45.
Right 40!
It’s a combination of having an inexperienced coach and inexperienced players. There is a learning curve involved for not only the players but the coach. We have some good athletic ability, but the only ones with experience are Meeks, PPat, and Stevenson. There are good athletes in Liggins, Miller, and Galloway but they lack the experience to use that ability to it’s fullest. Plus all listed here are having some issues with making poor decisions. I don’t think this team is basketball stupid……….they’ve shown on several occasions that they’re not……….but they do make stupid choices in games too much. It goes across the board and I think BG is having a hard time figuring out how to fix it. If BG and the team can get back on the same wavelength, they’ll go far. It’s one of those intangibles that has to work itself out I think.
Boy, I go out of town for the weekend and look what happens
I didn’t get to watch the game Saturday, which probably worked out for the best. I can’t comment too much on it obviously, but from reading ASoB and the recap, it seems to me the most damning part of the USC game was the defensive switch on Downey in the second half.
Oh well. Time to get out, beat Mississippi St, and get on a roll again.
