Horn says he would like to be "Kentucky-like" at South Carolina.

Nice interview. I think Horn was a terrific hire for the Gamecocks.

I have to admit ...

… I wasn’t optimistic about Horn’s chances at SC, but so far he’s proven me wrong.

I wish him well, except when he plays UK.

Ah, Coachspeak

Gracious interview, Horn sounds like a quite bright guy. Were it not for Trent Johnson at LSU he might be a prime candidate for SEC COY. I would remind everyone that coachspeak is not to be taken as gospel, instead, take heed:

I don't think it's coachspeak...

And by that I mean that I don’t think he’d leave for a lateral move. We have all the resources necessary to become a competent basketball program: eager fanbase, money to pay for a winning coach, nice arena and facilities, etc. Horn could do the same things for us that Billy Donovan did for the Gators. Would Horn leave for a job with a powerhouse school, especially UK considering that Horn is a Lexington native? Maybe so, depending on the situation. But I wouldn’t be too upset with him if he did that; UK is probably his dream job, so if the situation were right, why wouldn’t he take it?

As far as the job he’s done this year, there’s no doubt that he’s done good things. But I think it’s worth noting that he inherited tons of experience. Almost all of the players we have that are contributing right now were major players on last year’s team, and while that team had a poor record, they were in most of the games they played. Combine experience with a softer SEC and you have a team that wins a lot more games than a year before. I’m not saying that Horn hasn’t done a great job, but even in my enthusiasm for what he’s doing I’m not going to let myself forget that the real test will be what he does in a few years when all the players are his signees.

True. I'm def. not knocking the guy; he's done a great job...

Just trying to remain sanguine about the program. I think I’m too tempted to saying that we’re about to take off with Odom, Holtz, and Spurrier, all of whom were relatively successful in their first few years.

Interpretation

My comments weren’t so much about coachspeak in general — although that language does commonly require a bit of parsing and deconstruction — and certainly not concerning his performance in Columbia, but rather regarding the blandishment of UK’s assets. Therein the warning of future opponents bearing extra-kind words.

I like Coach Horn

He has done well in his young coaching career thus far. I hope he does well at SC, just not against the Cats. We really need to win the game tomorrow night.

I liked Coach Horn

Till he beat us. Now a picture of him dawns my dartboard. It’s right where I can hit it every time, six inches above the bullseye next to Robert Horry’s pic.

He seems like a pretty capable coach.

Of course, having Devan Downey in your lineup makes it considerably easier for the coach to look good.

Downey

Guy is amazing. I’m glad for him that he got out of Cincinnati before he punched any police horses or tortured any roomates.
