3 UK Football Players Invited to NFL Scouting Combine; Potentially Bad News for Wesley Woodyard

Tim Masthay, Marcus McClinton and Myron Pryor have been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in about three weeks for the upcoming NFL Draft.  It bodes well for all 3 that generally a majority (upwards of 95%) of players invited to the combine are drafted.

Here's the entire list:

This bit of news probably isn't good for Wesley Woodyard.  Woodyard was able to get on the field last year because of Williams' injury.  Apparently they plan to move Williams as the convert their base defense, which would seem to suggest that Woodyard's performance last year would be conducive to his inheritance of the spot.  However, the Broncos are rumored to be looking at LB in the Draft.  We'll see.

Tim Masthay

I know it must be competitive to kick in the NFL, but I really think Tim Masthay has a shot. .

I totally agree.

While it isn’t likely he’ll be drafted (very late rounds, if anything), he’ll certainly get a call from a team to participate in training camp. The Combine will probably be a valuable “auditioning” opportunity for him.

Kickers are a dime a dozen

and you have to be truly exceptional to have a shot at dislodging a vet who has been in the league since Noah floated the Ark.
Best of luck Tim, it’s a tough world where you’re trying to go.

Really?

By “dime a dozen,” you mean that there are more quality punters than there are jobs in the NFL? Then why did Pittsburgh have to resort to Mitch Berger (a mediocre punter, at absolute best) when their starter went down in the preseason with a knee injury?

My primary team in the NFL is the Broncos.

I have absolutely no idea what the new staff is going to do with the players, so I cannot offer any ideas about the personnel for next year, but I can tell you that Woodyard had an absolutely spectacular year. He had a real knack for being involved in most plays when he was on the field, always seeming to know where to go.

If you want to peruse opinions of his performance, this Google search should help. It’s specific to Mile High Report, the Broncos SBNation site. Pop through a few random game threads, do a find for “Woodyard” or “WW” (they rarely use his first name) and scroll through. Be warned, though; their game threads are so active they have a separate thread for each quarter.

He’ll land on his feet, whether or not he finds himself falling.
