Dickie V

I like how Dick Vitale has claimed that John Wall is his Diaper Dandy of the Week. And that Kentucky is his team of the week. I think that Dick 's mind is starting to go cause if i remeber correctly he is a Duke fan. Always has been always will be. Maybe he is just confusing the blue and white colors. I will be happy though when i see my beloved cats beat on this unworthy Duke team this Year. Who is ready to add another national championship banner to Rupp area. Hey dicky stop with all the BS we know you dont like us and we dont care.

I have

mixed feelings about Dickie V. I can listen to him talk about basketball, and even read his articles online. Also, he is widely regarded as a decent and charitable human being.

However, I can’t stand to hear him call a game. He ruins the experience for me, totally trying to make the event about HIM (even if he does so unintentionally). And of course, he’s a complete Duke homer. Strangely enough, he also seems to love Duke’s chief rival, UNC.

I have exactly the same mixed feelings

Seems like a genuinely good guy, and I love his enthusiasm for the game. And I’m not really bothered by his Duke-love. I think he’s far more a front-runner than he’s actually biased toward any team. The ACC is an excellent basketball conference, hence the adoration. And lord knows the man can’t do ANYTHING subtly. So all that, I’m fine with. But him calling a game = nails on a chalkboard for me. It really, really drives me up a wall. I always sound like I have Tourettes, with all my incoherent cursing, listening to a Dicky V-called game.

Agree totally....based on the past....about Dick Vitale

However, I haven’t heard him gushing about Duke as much lately, as he used to do. Have you?

a little Dickie V goes a long way....

that being said, he truly loves college basketball. typically when he calls a game, he makes you as a fan think your team is the best there is. the problem is, you remember he does it for everyone….

only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team

This is ridiculous...

So basically, when he doesn’t pick Kentucky, he is a Duke homer. When he does pick Kentucky, he is confused? Give him a break. I’m a Kentucky homer but I can respect when another team/player does well.

He does have a love affair

with ACC basketball though

Vitale

I try to never listen to Vitale call a game if I can help it.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Dicky V is a homer to whoever is the big dog at the time.

When UK was good in the 90s he was a UK homer. He is also a homer to whoever is good at the time, be it Dook, Unc, kansas or whoever. Its just who he is. I like listening to Dicky V most of the time except when he tells me how great Coach K is, but thats cause I hate Dook and Coach whiny.

Dicky V is not a favorite of mine to listen to

His ‘tone’ more than anything else, I think, is what bugs me. Maybe I was spoiled a lot by Cawood….That being said, I have to ask….
Does anyone know if we have DV tonight?

A lot of ESPN love going around for UK presently. Jay Bilas says that the UNC at UK game was the weekend’s best game and PPat was the weekend’s best player. We already knew how great he is. :-)

I read somewhere (on twitter, I think)

that Bob Knight would be calling our game tonight, but didn’t hear who the other guy would be. I don’t think they usually pair Knight with Vitale, it’s usually Bilas or someone else. So, take that for what it’s worth, I guess. ; )

NOOO!

That’s unfortunate. I just checked and I read about Knight on Adam Zagoria’s twitter account, and it’s certainly possible he was mistaken. Rats. ; )

Yeah.

I heard Vitale say yesterday during the Gtown game that he would be calling tonight’s game.

Dicky V is

a subject guaranteed to get conflicting opinions. I agree he’s bombastic but you can’t ignore his enthusiam and love for the game.

I don’t fully agree he’s a ACC worshiper…..I think he worships whoever’s around. He LOVED Pitino and he REALLY LOVED Knight. I think some of that is his failed coaching career and I think he truely admires successful coaches.

I agree he can get on your nerves but to me he the greatest basketball announcer on the planet compared to BILLY PACKER.

Billy Packer was the most smug know-it-all EVER associated with college sports on TV. You can “think” DIcky V is biased toward the ACC but you KNOW Billy Packer was. He also NEVER had much good to say about UK other that the obvious that he had to say.

Dicky V can be a pain but Billy Packer was a JERK!!!

What about ol' Al McGuire??

Now there was one for list!! When the Cats had the yearly with Notre Dame he always used to call that game, hated it…

What about Digger Phelps??

I enjoy his perspective …. my favorite of all time (although not a basketball guy) is “The Pride of Louisiana” Terry Bradshaw … talk about having fun with your job – He’s a hoot!

Cannot agree with you

about Al McGuire. I never heard anything from him that smacked of being anti-UK. I think he was one of the most knowledgeable announcers ever and had an uncanny knack of predicting the change in momentum of a game.

Dickie V

In all my years of watching Dickie V. I have vascillated between love and hate about a million times. At first I loved his comments, he was SOOO excited, and it is contageous. Then, I became annoyed by the unceasing rants and oftentimes banality of his comments. He is such a king of stating the obvious.
Finally, I’ve come to appreciate that he’s been good for the game overall, because of his enthusiasm—and as a couple of folks pointed out, he is truly a great person, very charitable and compassionate. I was, frankly worried about him last year when he had such serious throat problems. As to the Doookie thing, well, that does as someone said, seem to have lessened. Frankly, as I watched them play recently, I wondered how anyone could think that Duke could play in the same gym as the Cats—not just a homer call on my part. They are not very good athletes—the one thing they do have (I’ll get crucified for this one) is Coach K, who I respect very much—and recognize him as an excellent prep coach, game coach. So good players with his sets and bench work become VERY good teams. But as to V—I think he sees the disparity in talent at the two schools, how can one not?

Homer?

How about the Larry Conley broadcasts? He is unapologetic about being a homer, and I love him for it!
