Around SBN: The Week In Worst: When Baseball Goes Wrong

The Big Blue Daily Mail -- New Year's Eve Edition

In a few hours, it will be 2010.

14-0.  Kind of has a nice ring to it, I think.

It's been a long time since Kentucky has been undefeated at this point in the season, and an even longer time since they have won their first 14 games.  How long?  1977-78 -- you know, the national championship year?

That's a long time.

But here we are, about to move from 2009 to 2010, the Wildcats are 14-0, and the Cardinals are coming to town on Saturday.  That's a lot to look forward to.

The news follows the jump.

John Wall-

“Gets it” He wants to be the best point guard he can be. He’s working on every aspect of his game, and deserves everything he gets. I’m glad Coach Cal put him back in. The way he congratulated everyone on the bench shows what kind of man he is…

That WildcatCorner.com guy

cracks me up. And by “cracks me up” I mean “makes me wish I read a language other than English.”

Taking a crazy forum post from an opposing fan as a basis to defame the entirety of the fanbase is the most unoriginal move EVER, and the post is about how Cards fans are unoriginal. Nice.

So true Memphis. It happens to all fan bases (all groups of all kinds, really), but I’d be hard-pressed to think of one that is more judged on the basis of its nutso fringe members than UK basketball’s.

John Wall

Just for fun, take any five minute portion of the broadcast Sarurday and count the number of times you hear ‘John Wall’ said. Pre-game, first five minutes, time outs, half time, and five. I’ll be it said more than any other player total on the Kentucky team.
Not bitiching but I’m afraid my dog is going to stsrt saying ‘John Wall’ in his sleep.
He’s good for Kentucky basketball no doubt, but what will happen if he goes down? The announcers will have to actaully say something about the others.
Especially Jimmy Dykes.

I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.

John Wall is Superman.

He is worth every bit of the hype and worth every mention of his name.

After UK lost at the Music City Bowl and my husband and I were walking across the bridge in a mess of blue and orange, it was very quiet. After a few minutes though some people in the crowd just started yelling, “John Wall,” after a few of these shouts UK fans and Clemson fans alike were chuckling and conversations began anew.

John Wall. The cure for what ails ya! ;)

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Our crowd returning from the game

went straight into the BEAT LOUISVILLE discussion. Wall was mentioned, but then, so was PPat, The Cuz and everyone else. The fanbase is much more aware of the TEAM than the media.

by hoboat33 on Dec 31, 2009 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

And I say....

…It’s about time..!!!

Kentucky basketball is relevant again, and John Wall is a ‘big’ reason why… I could hear his name 200 times a game, because if their talking about Wall, they’re not talking about the other team…

Well I don't know, Tru ...
For those of you who doubt my complaints about defense, do you trust the coach?

Did you believe him when he said the team was 4-5?

Complaints about the defense are certainly valid. It needs to improve. But one guy in particular, John Wall, needs to be very, very careful.

When we get to the Big Dance and the heat starts to get turned WAY up, I can definitely see a group of referees wanting to make sure things stay under control, and calling things pretty close. A few questionable calls, and Wall is on the bench, sitting next to Coach Cal, instead of out on the court leading his team- in the biggest game of the season.

It is in the best interest of the team for John Wall to be on the court, running the game. So while he needs to always put a lot of effort into his defense, he also needs to stay smart, and stay careful. There needs to be that balance.

That isn’t just strategy, it is common sense.

by Sonic on Dec 31, 2009 11:30 AM EST reply actions

Jamaal Mashburn.

The Duke game ‘92. Pitino’s defense system puts Mashburn with four fouls pressing a smaller, faster player at midcourt and he fouls out of the game. Duke could not stop Mashburn in that game and wasting him at midcourt was a major factor in our eventual loss.

by kywineman on Dec 31, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

The thought of

an epic battle with Kansas in the Final 4, and at a very critical time in the second half, maybe the 12 minute to 6 minute mark, seeing John Wall sitting on the bench next to Coach Cal in foul trouble... I don’t even want to think about it!

by Sonic on Dec 31, 2009 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

We aren't pressing THAT much...

And really its just 3-point defense that stinks. Our interior defense is one of the best in the country and our transition D is pretty good when guys don’t get lost…Our perimeter D is ranked around 250. Seriously, Just looking at the numbers you would think we were playing a very conservative zone defense.

Personal Theory: I think part of the problem might be having to practice against Wall and Bledsoe. Those guys are so fast fast that you have to back off them to keep them in front of you…Hard for coach to instill that “In your grill” defensive mentality if your getting beat in practice.

by sylvar on Dec 31, 2009 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

If this team does indeed get beat, two things will probably have happened.

1. foul trouble (Wall and either PPat or DC sit with fouls)
2. a team, or some kid having a career game, takes advantage of weak d against the three.

With the talent on this squad it probably has to be BOTH.

No matter where you're at, there you are

and so far....

you are right as the only “scares” we have had were from teams with one or the other…

am thinking early career games by 3-pt shooters in rupp and the LBS game where we were tied at half due to cousins, pp and wall being on the bench with 2 fouls

by memphis wildcat on Dec 31, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

yep, my take on the first 14, too.

sometimes you can’t control the fouls (bad luck, bad ref’s, hostile environment, etc.)
Good news is, a team can control d versus the three. If luck holds out, that hole might get plugged before the “perfect” storm.

No matter where you're at, there you are

by cincyblue on Dec 31, 2009 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

This is my thinking EXACTLY,

I agree entirely with every word here.

I truly believe that when this team does lose, we may look at the box score to see Wall with far fewer minutes than normal (foul trouble) at very crucial times in the game, with the addition of either PPat or DC having had to sit more, as well, for the same reason.

Keeping Wall on the court is Job 1. He needs to try hard on defense, and put forth the effort. But I want Wall going out on the court for the opening tip and already being as careful as if he was already in danger of foul trouble.

by Sonic on Dec 31, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Heh.
Did you believe him when he said the team was 4-5?

He wasn’t trying to convince anyone of that. What he was doing was trying to point out to the team that they had been as lucky as they had been good, and that is so.

By the way, the biggest reason he was saying we were 4-5 is because of Kentucky’s defense. The offense has been top ten all year.

No matter what you may think, the statistics don’t lie, and neither do my eyes. Calipari sees far more than I do, and I am confident that he is just as concerned as I am with our defense.

Agree Tru

a big enough reason for 3-a-day practices. I would think almost entirely on D, with FT practice thrown in with some running for conditioning. Coach has said he has “seen it all” in his 20+ years, so defending the three’s is surely at the top of the list for Saturday’s game. I think he is happy(relative term) with the post defense right now.

by UK1972 on Dec 31, 2009 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

OK, Tru

I will agree with you that Coach Cal is concerned with the defense, and is probably YELLING at John Wall, in front of the entire team, “John, you have to play harder and better on defense!”

If you will agree with me that he is also taking John aside when no one else is looking and WHISPERING in his ear, “Don’t do anything to get into foul trouble, kid… I need you on the court.”

I think you and I are both right.

Great stuff Tru...

Wow, the Mike Leach saga is getting plenty of play…

As for UK fans facebooking..? While I too think it’s childish, I’m sure UK fans are not alone in this practice…

Looking at the Rivals.com mid-season all American team; When I see that ’Cuz is not even on the 3rd team, I can only wonder what his numbers would be if he played more 18.7 minutes per game… Imagine what he could put up with 30 minutes..?

my point is....

the rooms are a LONG way from the small dark places the james have pointed to as the locations – they made it sound like a room the size of a refrigerator box in the middle of the desert.

clearly, leach wanted to isolate the kid – much like sending your child to his room. also, in one room, it was being “guarded” by the trainer or assistant trainer…

i believe coaches should have to power to discipline and i believe they can go too far – however, if the rooms are the ones in the video then james are wrong, imo…

Ladies and Gentlemen we are so fortunate to be where we are today. One or Two

things goes differently and we are discussing today how badly the Cards can make us look tomorrow. Or how we can get them out of Rupp with our dignity intact.

Instead we have this:

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one group of fans to dissolve the imaginary bands between themselves and another lesser group, and to assume among the powers of the sport their rightful and true station to which the Laws of Nature and Natures of God entitle them, a decent respect as to the opinions of mankind and those of the lesser group, they should declare their right not only to lead the lesser group, but to also be responsible for their education, care and existence.

We must therefore declare our position to the world, that we are fully aware of our place in the world and are here to state unequivocally that we will no longer go quietly into the night. We will no longer accept the crumbs from the master’s table, nor the dregs from his wine casks. we shall declare in one loud and clear voice that we are here and we will not be denied those entitlements which are due those which hold that place upon top of the mountain, that we should not only be respected but feared. And that while willing to be fair, we will not allow anyone even the slightest inkling of hope for defeating our cause. We will be ever vigilent and will not shrink from the tasks that lay before us. It is not only our duty and responsibility to conquer, it is our birthright.

Join us world. We will bring you glory in abundance.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Outside The Lines

This is nonsense…it’s all about selling media.. I live in Texas and Texas has a good basketball team, again.. but, I went to my first of 78 UK “Real Basketball Games” in December of 1975 and am the only person in Texas (probably) with a “Big White K” on a blue flag hanging from my home! Billy Gillespie should not be blamed for his recruits. Two of them are starting for Coach Cal… the cupboard was bare when he got there and he never had a PG 1/10th of John Wall. The last 2 or 3 years Smith was the coach, he did nothing but get his check and his tenure (How ‘bout that, a cool mill to sneak your ass out in the middle of the nite to go coach at Minnesota..really?)) Galloway was never going “to be the man”.. I do hope “The Beast” is doing good at OSU. I know Travis Ford doesn’t have 5 big men 6’9" or taller (thats counting The Crawfish(Stevenson for some reason). Pilgrim will have plenty of PT and can’t wait to see him rip it against Kansas, et al.. Coach Cal is being paid “monster bucks” for only one reason… TO WIN.. he should be able to do it with his players…because the buck all stops with the head coach…

by Foxtrail1 on Dec 31, 2009 4:58 PM EST reply actions

"The Beast"

He’s doing okay, but not exactly setting the world on fire.

He’s getting a little over 15 minutes a game and averaging 7.5 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. Not bad I suppose, but hardly the difference maker everyone seemed to think he would be. Personally, I never saw the wisdom in thinking a player could transfer from Hampton and be a major contributor at the major college level.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Jan 1, 2010 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Intangibles

At least those are real figures for PT and not intangibles.. you know like 15 minutes 2 pts and a couple of rebs… like senior leadership, missing FTs and wide open shots all things a senior on a D-1 should be able to do… C’mon Darnell hit 5 or 6 3’s against UL and play a little D and we’ll forget the senior leadership…

I just think the team plays better when he’s on the floor. And he’s worked his tail off.

Harris Starting???

Over which starter?? Miller would be the only one I could see placing Harris in front of at any time, though personally I still give Miller the nod. Harris is as hard-working as they come, but he is not a starter – IMO.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

by kentuckygirl0724 on Dec 31, 2009 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

Only way I'd consider it

Would be to slide Miller to the 2 and start Harris while bringing Bledsoe off the bench to play the point/shooting guard.

Give me 1 Bledsoe and 1 Patterson and you can have all of the Miller and Harris you can count on both feet and hands. Last year it was Meeks and P Pat…this year, its P Pat and the 1st Marine Division.. we have all the weapons we need… when Darnell and Bledsoe are hitting 3’s there isn’t any team in college b ball that can run with these big dogs(cats)… they all may as well stay on the porch!!!

Harris a starter?

The comment was “should Harris be a starter…No…” he may be a good athlete, the hardest worker on the team and he may be good off the bench, Coach Cal does value “his senior leadership” and his “intangibles”…but, he is no Bledsoe and never will be… and Miller, did he miss the team bus to Rupp today? Except for minutes played and 3 fouls, his box score was nothing but goose eggs.

by Foxtrail1 on Jan 2, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

Sometimes a sixth man is more valuable than a starter.

In many cases, the sixth man comes in armed with an insight (from the side of the court) that is hard to gain when you’re working your butt off to guard your man, get into the flow of the offense, etc. You get to see the whole floor and evaluate the flow of the game better from the bench than from the floor, and, if you pay attention, you KNOW where the critical points are. In my opinion, Harris does that extremely well from the bench. I’d hate to disrupt a good pattern right now. On the other hand, . . . who knows what would happen?

Forty, I hate to quibble with you,

but Cliff Berger was the “real” sixth man in ‘65-66. Bob had considerably fewer minutes than Cliff did. I’m not minimizing his contributions, but he just didn’t get in as much as Cliff. Basically, Kron and Dampier were “iron men” that year, and Bob shared guard sub time with Jim LeMaster and Steve Clevenger.

Berger, in a 69-65 (I think) win over Georgia in Athens, made the last four points for UK. If I’m not mistaken, they were all free throws. Not bad for a big, non-starter.

I watched every home game and several

away games in person, and, while I don’t think Bob was a slug, I disagree with you. There was a noticeable drop in the level of ball-handling and team chemistry when he came in.

There was a loss of team speed when Cliff came in, but his teamwork (picks, selflessness, defense) was better than Bob’s, in my opinion. That team was a passing team. Bob was not a passing guy.
