GOG 2009 #13: Hartford

In their last game the Cats played as though Christmas was two days away which - coincidentally - it was.  Now they've had a good break, have practiced a bit, and are ready to take on Hartford.  Personally, I didn't know investment companies were allowed to field NCAA basketball teams, but I guess you learn something new every day.  This is a game that I can see as easily going in one of two ways: either the Wildcats will come out refreshed, rejuvinated and  ready to kick butt, or they will come out refreshed, rejuvinated and with a week's worth of rust to shake off.  I hope for the former.

Series History:

None.  Once again UK faces an opponent for the first time.

GOG 2009 #13: Hartford [Max 44 Points]

  1. What is the margin of victory (regardless of who wins)? [4 pts if correct, 3 pts within one, 2 pts within two, 1 pt within three] 43 points.  Everyone underestimated this one.
  2. How many combined points do the freshmen (Wall, Bledsoe, Cousins, Hood, Orton) score? [4 pts if correct, 3 pts within one, 2 pts within two, 1 pt within three] Despite Bledsoe sitting out, the freshmen still managed to score 38 points.
  3. In games such as this where it is likely UK will dominate the first half, I like to pay attention to the second half scoring.  Specifically, I'm always interested in whether UK dominates the second half like they dominate the first half or whether they just play even.  Does UK outscore Hartford by 10 or more points in the second half? [+1 if correct, -1 if incorrect] Yes, UK outscored Hartford by 17 in the 2nd half.
  4. One of the bright spots from UK's last game was the excellent ball handling as UK only had 9 TOs and a 12.2 TO% (2nd best of the season).  What is UK's turnover margin for the game?  (To give some a clarification: a positive TO margin means UK forces more turnovers than it commits, a negative margin means the opposite) [3 pts] UK was +7 on turnovers.
  5. Does UK finish with more assists than turnovers? [+1 if correct, -1 if incorrect] Err, that would be a "yes" as UK had 30 assists to just 7 turnovers.
  6. Which UK player leads the team in assist-to-turnover ratio (minimum 10 minutes played)? [3 pts] Patterson and Liggins are the correct answer for this, as each had multiple assists with 0 TO.  In light of his historic night - for one time only - I am also going to accept Wall as a correct answer as his astonishing 16:1 ratio just demands it.  To be clear, if you had Patterson or Wall (no one picked Liggins) you got credit for this.
  7. Patrick Patterson: Merely Great, or Greatest Ever?  Patterson has 6 double-doubles this season.  Does he get another? [ +1 if correct, -1 if incorrect] Unfortunately no, as Patrick only had 3 rebounds.
  8. I mentioned this in the last GOG, but it's frightening (for opposing teams) what kind of numbers DeMarcus Cousins could put up if he could just stay on the floor.  How many minutes for the freshman big man?  Does he pick up two (or more) fouls in the first half? [3 pts for the first, +1 if correct, -1 if incorrect for the second] Cousins only played 19 minutes, but it wasn't because of foul trouble as he had zero (0!) fouls the entire game.  That's a "no" for the second question.
  9. Which group has the better FG% for UK: the starters or the bench?  Which group has the better FT%? [+1 if correct, -1 if incorrect each] The starters were better in both categories.
  10. How many dunks does UK get? [3 pts] 10 dunks (it seemed like more)
  11. How many shots does UK block?  How many players (both teams combined) block at least one shot? [3 pts each] Just 4 blocks and Cousins and Orton were the only players to get them.
  12. Josh Harrellson played some good minutes against LBS after Patterson and Cousins got into foul trouble.  Predict his field goal attempts/rebounds/blocks. [2 pts each] 3/2/0
  13. Hartford doesn't have a great team, but junior Andres Torres is in Ken Pomeroy's top 500 in effective FG% (159th), assist rate (106th), steal% (451st) and FT rate (114th).  Predict his assists/steals/free throw attempts. [2 pts each] An unfortunate injury ended Torres's night early so he finished with just 1/0/0.  I really hope he is able to come back and play for them this year.

Deadline for entries is tip-off at 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 29.

Congratulations to UKlvrJM and tippey for tying for the lead!  Each had 12 points and were followed closely by Shive with 11 points and RandomGuy0 with 10.  Full results are below.
