The Big Blue Daily Mail -- Week of Practice Edition

Eric Bledsoe can dunk, too.

Darron Cummings - AP

Eric Bledsoe can dunk, too.

This week, the 'Cats are practicing hard, getting ready for the Peay.

Back when I was in school, the Austin Peay Governors were the #1 rival of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, and that game was always high-energy.  Things have changed now, but every time I think of Austin Peay, I think of my college days on the Hill.

In this issue of the Big Blue Daily Mail, the ejected Presbyterian fan at the North Carolina Tar Heels game tells his side of the story, and the North Carolina athletics director puts his own spin on it, which is predictably a little hard to swallow after seeing the video.  But whatever.

Also, it seems that the other Carolina (that would be South Carolina, for those of you who skipped the first two paragraphs) are loving their football and basketball coaches.  Nice to see.

Finally, Seth Davis says that Xavier Henry is just as impressive as John Wall.  Well, okay.  Personally, I don't think so, but as we all know, Seth Davis picked the Germans to win World War II.

There is plenty more in the news after the jump.

UK-Clemson

While not a generally a big fan of Clemson, I have had the opportunity to see them a couple of times this season. Let me say that CJ Spiller not being a finalist for the Heisman was an absolute mistake. He came back for his senior season … easily could be an NFL player right now. KIcking off to Spiller is a mistake in itself. Good Luck to the football Cats against a very good Clemson team.

He got votes ...

But wasn’t invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Mistake = Injustice. See link below.
http://nfldraftdog.newsvine.com/_news/2009/12/08/3605553-cj-spiller-receives-heisman-snub
Also lining up for Clemson is Jacoby Ford. Ford was the 60M Champion for the 2008-09 NCAA indoor track season. These two usually line up for kick offs … either one is very dangerous with the ball. Spiller is 4th in the nation in all purpose yards and has 4 kick off returns for touchdowns this year.

Spiller

is as good or better than any back we faced this year. No Maxwell is going to hurt.

I think this is just 100% spin. Sadly, just the kind of behavior that I think most find unsurprising.

To be honest, though, if this were Calipari and not Williams, I doubt that Barnhart would improve on the UNC AD’s act much. I’d love to be wrong about that, but I don’t think I am.

I don't agree, actually.

I saw very few signs of Calipari pulling punches, at least to a greater extent than most coaches do. Most of the games that were closer than they should have been were that way because UK did not defend well.

And that’s reflected in the stats.

The thing they have most in common is being freshmen.
Henry is playing on a team with experienced players around him. He is a good player and can thrive in that situation. Henry is shooting gurad – not running the point. Seth is just trying to create some publicity and hype … Wall is far and away doing more for his team than Henry.

Well,

have to address a few of these this morning, just because I am up this early and the phone isnt ringing yet.

1)Why are there no really hot girls recruiting smart guys into college?? Why cant a 3.93 GPA get a little love??? I dont remember Wright State even promising me there would be any girls on campus.

2)Lamb and Knight together would mean we have two back to back top 5 recruting classes….oooohhhhhhh……I likie…..

3)Anyone want to se me do the John Wall dance??….At my size its more like the Great Wall dance, but hey, anything for the Cats.

4)A Florida lineman picks Kentucky? I thought that was not supposed to happen?….Why would a Florida lineman want to leave Bikinis, Tiki torches and Urban Meyer behind????

5)Rick Pitino cant get UL under control? What’s next, the world revolves backwards for a day

6)If Herb Sendek has the most coaches out there then doesnt Pitino get to claim them by proxy? And more importantly, which one of them wants his job

7) Will the real Roy Williams please go on Oprah and fix this mess?……I cannot stand to look at powder blue this much…..makes me ill……..

Well ABC, to answer questions (1) and (3)....

(1) Good question! It wouldn’t have made much difference for me, though. I didn’t really have a stellar ‘GPA’, ‘SAT’, ‘PPG’ or ‘YAC’ to get any recruitment like that… even having a ‘CAR’ didn’t really help very much past the 10th grade… :-(

(3) Yes! Absolutely…!!

If Josh Hopkins, Kris Allen, and some kids seeing Santa can all do it…. why not you ?!

Sorry to tell you though, but as for calling it “the Great Wall Dance” goes— the Great Wall already has one.

I kinda like the cute kids the best.

Since you mention Bledsoe...

I really like his game right now. Remember, he is playing out of position at the 2 spot. I got to believe this is really a plus going forward. Like coach said, “I’ll take 7 turnovers with the line stat he had”, (i.e. Indiana). I doubt that Calipari expected this much production out of Bledsoe this early in the year, and with a semi-bad ankle. I truly believe he is the x factor for this team this year.

To borrow a line from

Gene Simmons at the beginning of his show (LOVE it btw)….“It’s GREAT to be ME (A UK Fan)!!!”

Christmas is almost here…..our B-ball team is 10-0. We’re going to be the first team blowing through 2000 wins. The national media has annointed our point guard the player of the year. We just played by far our best game of the season.

We have the best coach in college basketball. UofL SUCKS!!!! We’ve beat Indiana and UNC (as someone pointed out that’s “baby” blue btw). UNC’s coach is in the media spotlght for making an ass of himself instead of our coach. It looks like Memphis has a great chance to win their appeal and stick it up the NCAA’s ass…thereby removing half of the things Pat Forde can talk about.

Our F-ball team is going to it’s 4th straight bowl. Joker has weeks to figure out what to do with Cobb in the red zone. Our football recruiting is going well. UT football is under NCAA investigation…isn’t that terrible!!!

Now if I could only get Coach Cal and Coach Brooks to finish my Christmas shopping!!!

My favorite "coach" photo was from the late 1980's...

I was actually one of, what felt like, only a handful of people around Lexington who actually liked a certain coach from a school called ‘LSU’. I actually called that coach’s office at his school to wish him good luck in the game against us when they came to Lexington. I only talked to his secretary, but left the message for him.

Later that night, the phone rang and it was…. him …. thanking me for my message! After a minute, he invited me to come to their shoot around when they came to Rupp for the game. So, he left my name with security, and I went to their shoot around and met him.

I have a picture somewhere—- I need to find it! — of him and me up in the stands at Rupp for a ‘staged’ photo. The picture shows me standing up with a clipboard showing him a play called “Hex the Rex”. We are the only ones in the stands.

He didn’t have to call me back, or invite me to the shoot around. He knew I wasn’t an LSU fan, just a UK fan that wished him well. But he did call me back.

I don’t know how many of us there are, but I will always be a Dale Brown fan.

The game needs more “colorful characters” like that guy. Hell… life does.

Then you and I are quite a bit alike

except that I have never warmed up to Bobby Knight. At least not yet.

You may like this article from 1997 when Brown retired.

I think this about sums it up:

The NCAA, which Brown once called the “gestapo,” investigated his program for four years but filed no sanctions….. Long an outspoken champion of law and order, he once met with a death-row inmate in the man’s final hours, and later spoke out against the death penalty. He also met Mother Teresa, invited dying children to sit on the bench during games, and searched for Big Foot and Noah’s Ark.

And that’s just the stuff we know about…..

I remember one incident

in which one of his players close relative had died. The boy had no way to get home for the funeral. Dale paid his way, an infraction of NCAA rules and went public immediately. He basically dared them to come after him and they didn’t.

Calipari: Cats Revert In Practice
Kentucky coach John Calipari said Wednesday he tried to see if the Wildcats could handle themselves without his tutelage in Tuesday’s practice. They failed.

"I did the warmup stuff with them Tuesday, had them scrimmage without me stopping and I told them I’ll leave and watch the tape,’’ Calipari said. "All the stuff we worked on, they reverted back to playing casually. For us to be where we want to be they’ve got to be empowered.’’

But Calipari said the Wildcats continue to look for him to lead. He said during the Indiana game last Saturday the younger players were constantly looking to the bench for affirmation.

"This team is not ready to be empowered,’’ Calipari said. "I keep saying we’re young and so inexperienced.’’

But, Weasel, you left out the most important part. : )

Although it’s true that Coach gave the boys a little test at one of their recent practices in order to see how far they’ve come and if they are capable of making court-like decision on their own (being empowered) and yes, according to Coach Cal they did fail, but the little nugget that I found to be the most important was when he also had this to say:

At first, after watching the tape, I was upset. Then I sat back and thought about it. What should I be upset about? This is the youngest team I’ve ever coached. When I’ve done this empowerment exercise with other teams, they have been veteran-led teams.

This is a team that is still learning with each and every practice and game. If I do this again in say, February, and the team still looks they have never been coached by us, THEN I will be upset. But not now.

So, no, the boys didn’t pass Coach’s little empowerment test, but he’s not worried about it at this juncture and if he’s not worried about it, well, then neither am I.

Also, as a head’s-up — The above clip that I used is from Coach’s website (it’s a blog entry) and I had to log in in order to read it, so if you don’t already have an account on Coach’s site, you may need to create one if you wish to read the entire blog entry.

i guess i was more disappointed with PP than the freshman. i would have hoped he stepped up – that being said, in many ways he is a “freshman” to Cal’s coaching so i moved on. also, could pp ever really do ANYTHING that would disappoint any of us?
