Inconsistency plagues Kentucky football

Sec09-msu-1_medium

via gate21.net

There's been a considerable amount of fallout after Kentucky's disappointing loss at home to the hands of Mississippi State last Saturday. Before the game, a good percentage of Big Blue Nation had reason to believe that their Wildcats could win 9-10 games, beat Georgia and/or Tennessee, and travel to the Chick-fil-A or Outback Bowl.

Fans now question the Cats' chances at Vanderbilt and whether or not they'd travel to Shreveport or Memphis instead of Atlanta or Tampa. Who's to blame? Take your pick:

1. The players

Kentucky had consistently demonstrated quite a formidable defense the past few weeks. In the Cats' last four games before taking on MSU, they'd held Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn, and Louisiana-Monroe to under 5.0 yards per carry. Mississippi State, however, managed to rack up an alarming 7.7 yards per rush, led by SEC Player of the Week Anthony Dixon's career day (33 carries for a school-record 252 yards).

Inconsistent quarterback play has also hurt the Cats. Freshman Morgan Newton led UK behind center against MSU, completing 11 of his 18 passes for 119 yards, no TDs, and a game-changing interception inside the Bulldog 20 yard line. UK's 'Wildcat' formation was also held in check on Saturday, as Randall Cobb was held to 25 yards on eight carries.

Argument against: Fatigue. The Cats are banged up, and have faced numerous injuries to key players (Micah Johnson, Derrick Locke, Paul Warford), some of which has caused them to miss considerable amounts of time (Mike Hartline, Trevard Lindley).

2. The coaches

Rich Brooks has tried to shoulder most of the blame for Saturday's loss, claiming that it was the coaching staff's fault for lack of preparation, so take that for what it's worth. Brooks has rightfully been able to avoid the negative talks that surrounded him during his first few seasons as head coach in Lexington. Joker Phillips, the Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach-in-waiting, has not. Questionable playcalling, specifically in the opponent's red zone, has been a hot topic in both of UK's last two losses vs. MSU and South Carolina.

Defensive Coordinator Steve Brown has also faced a considerable amount of Anthony Dixon-caused scrutiny, as the Cats were simply baffled by the relative simplicity of MSU's offensive gameplan. Anybody recall the shotgun-counter running play the Bulldogs ran over and over?

Argument against: Kentucky wouldn't be where it is today (three consecutive bowl wins) without the help of Brooks & Co., so cut 'em some slack. Right?

3. The fans

Perhaps the most perplexing part of UK's struggle on Saturday was its lack of fan support. Setting aside the half-hearted 'blackout' effort inspired by A.D. Mitch Barnhart, only 67,953 showed up to Commonwealth for the Mississippi State game. That's less than the attendance for the Louisiana-Monroe game last week. Assuming that the Bulldogs travel much better than the Warhawks (they do), a lot of UK fans seemed to have had better things to do on Halloween.

In a most disturbing scene, a steady flow of UK faithful could be seen heading for Commonwealth Stadium's exits after Newton's interception in the fourth quarter. Mind you, there was still 10:47 left on the game clock of a one-possession game.

Argument against: I'll give Big Blue Nation the benefit of the doubt this time. Ticket prices, bad weather, and Halloween may have deterred many from attending on Saturday. But enough of declaring that the players need to 'show up' more often; if fans want Kentucky to climb into SEC football notoriety, they're going to have to spin the proverbial turnstiles as well.

The test

How  to test the aformentioned 'weaknesses' displayed by UK football of late:

1. The players- quarterback play will continue to be spotty until Hartline returns (bet you never thought you'd read that). However, pay close attention to how well the Cats play against Eastern Kentucky, an FCS opponent. Kentucky will get the Colonels' best shot, but should be able to handle their intra-state foe from Richmond. The Cats are also preparing for their fifth contest in as many weeks, and are in the middle of a stretch in which they play nine Saturdays in a row.

2. The coaches- how well a team is prepared is tough to gauge. Playcalling, however, is not: hope for a more efficient performance from the Cats in their next few red zone possessions offensively. On the defensive side of the ball, Steve Brown will have to rally his bruised & battered troops; after UK's contest against EKU, Vanderbilt, Georgia, and Tennessee loom.

3. The fans- I can't blame Big Blue Nation for being hopeful of double-digit wins and a New Year's Day Bowl. However, it appears that a few too many clad in blue-and-white (and black) expected their Cats to accomplish those lofty expectations. Four bowl games in a row is an attainable and respectable goal, one which Brooks-backers can embrace.

So I leave it up to you, Big Blue Nation. Who's to blame? Anybody? Everybody? Post your comment(s) below.

Welcome aboard sportsinlex....

nice to have another knowledgeable contributor. I no longer have answers for this team other than the facts that injuries and one-dimensional play calling have crippled us. The kids are putting up decent effort, but honestly, our inability to handle teams like MSU and USC defy logic (IMHO). Hartline hurt us, but not near as much as the fact that the coaches seem intent on using good players in every position fathomable, and we wonder why we have injuries when players pulling double and sometimes triple and quadruple duty. Just doesnt seem smart to me. We have some really great kids on this team, I just think they are not getting the best support that they could be getting form the staff.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Well done.

I wish we would quit assigning blame, myself. Building a football team is a process. If all it took was a head coach, South Carolina should have several national championships, as they have had two coaches there who won NC’s at other schools, but have yet to produce a consistent competitor even for the SEC championship. This at a school that has a much better recruiting base from which to pull from than Kentucky.

At the end of the day, Kentucky just needs to continue to move forward – improve recruiting, continue developing players, continue the things that have moved Kentucky out of the basement and onto the stairs that lead up. Traversing those stairs without taking a step or two back is really hard, but hopefully, we will all live to see it happen.

I'm sixty three

Seven years and I’ll be 70, The amount of time Brooks has been here. Do you think Brooks/Phillips will have taken us to the top three in the Eastern Division by then? We’ve used probation as an excuse for what two years of those seven. The best team we had was by a coach who brought them in while probation was in effect. Guy Morriss.
The twelve game schedule gave us the chance to pick up another buy win which we’ve used at least once to get to the ‘sacred six’ win total. This year it appears we might need all three buy wins and Louisville plus another win in the conference to get to the blessed level of bowl elighibity.
Improvement? Depends on if you can live long enough I guess. At the current level, some of us may not.

I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.

Great Post!

Interesting points on both sides of every question you ask. I voted for the coaches because I feel they’ve done a terrible job this season in game plannning and making adjustments during games.

I go back to the end of the first half in the UofL game..no points. Frankly, IMHO the staff didn’t do very good jobs in game planning for either FL or AL but that doesn’t mean we should have beat either, just played them closer. Won’t even address the SC game or the Miss St game….they’re both too obvious.

The fans. Well I’ve not run into anyone that expected us to have double digit wins but I don’t think it was unreasonable to expect 7-8 wins just based on the schedule. I think the fans are the biggest asset the UK program has. They almost always come close to filling Commonwealth regardless of how well the teams doing in the season. Living in Louisville and seeing less than 25,000 show up for last Saturday’s U0fL’s game shows what kind of fans UK has.

The players. Well don’t see how we can blame the players when they’re doing the best they can. There are injuries that have us playing at less than full strength and we’re young at several positions. Would we all like Newton’s interception back? Sure but can you really blame a freshman playing in his 3rd game for that? The DB who got burned on the long play action for the touchdown?? To me that’s back to coaching.

Maybe blame isn’t the best term for your question but I think responsible surely is and I think this staff is responsible and owe these kids and the fans much better.

who's to blame?

While I think everyone is to blame for letting the program come to the state it has been in, at least since Bryant left; I beleive simple discipline-type stuff, like pre-snap penalties(see the Florida and Alabam games) goes directly to coaching. In the Florida game, we were down in the first quarter almost solely due to pre-snap penalties. When we have had clean play we have won.

It doesn't take

a genius to figure out who put the blame on the coaches. A very good write up there sportsinlex. Brooks has always been a straight shooter, I don’t think anybody can argue that point, and he wasn’t happy with the effort the players put out. I tend to think not going black, kind of disappointed some of these guys and it might of actually helped to wear the black. Normally I think uniform colors do not matter. If Brooks had surprised them, it might have mattered this time.

by Grasslands1 on Nov 5, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

of course, Coaches

but how they accept the blame makes a difference. Everyone respects Brooks because he takes the blame for losses (with increasing frequency!) and goes on about his business. I’m just getting a little disenchanted with his “buck stops here, move on” attitude. Apologies are great but not if accompanied by actions to rectify the reason for the apology.

The two glaring problems have been offensive playcalling and defensive adjustments. The only specific playcalling apology was Brooks “that was a dumb call” after the fake field goal attempt at South Carolina. On a scale of 1 to 10 of the bizarre/bad/poor/regretful whatever playcalls that one barely registers a mention. I wish Brooks was a little more specific on what he apologizes for so we know he’s on the same subject. When my kids apologize I have them explain what they’re apologizing for so they know what they did wrong. That way they know, for instance, the apology is for hitting their brother NOT for getting caught hitting their brother.

If Brooks could verbalize the specifics of the apology I’d feel better. It also might help bring into focus that our playcalling at times really sucks and our defensive coaching is a more than a little suspect. Great quote by Coach Brown after the South Carolina loss ""It was a learning experience, and the thing we can build upon is that they were in great position. It’s not like they were beat. Now we just have to teach them to look for the ball and have the confidence to try and make a play." Practice should be the learning experience. If you haven’t been teaching the cover guys to look for the ball, I’m shocked. My Pee Wee team knows that much and there’s rarely 5 passes a game. Secondly, Coach Brown have you heard of in-game adjustments. The defense starts the game in one mode and stays in that formation/scheme until halftime, come hell or high water. Adjustments are made at halftime and once again they stay in that mode until the end of the game, come hell or high water. I’d just like a little less hell and high water.

Let me propose another alternative.

I wish to propose the administration for making the schedule that we have. I know that our administration does not control the conference part of the schedule, the SEC does. Our athletic department does control the non-conference part of the schedule though. How would our season look if we had already played an EKU level opponent and got the win and then have this week off to heal and get ready for those last three games. I know that I would be more hopeful than I am now. It was simply insane to set this team’s schedule up with 11 games in a row with no off week. Who does that to themself in this conference especially? Yeah, I woould much rather be entering this week at 5-4 and resting for the final stretch as opposed to 4-4, with no break to heal or rest and needing two wins for a bowl and three for a decent bowl.

by wklawdog on Nov 5, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I like the schedule

EKU is almost a bye week without losing the edge from not playing for two weeks. The Cats have the opportunity to not worry about a complex game plan, give the starters enough reps to maintain their edge and give valuable game time experience to 2nd and 3rd stringers that will be called upon the next few weeks in “big” games.

We can’t overlook EKU completely, but the team should be to the point where the Colonels are not a real threat for an upset. If we aren’t to that point, all is lost anyway.

by hoboat33 on Nov 5, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True, they should beat EKU,

the point is that they should not be playing them this week. Should we need out starters to go the entire game, hopefully not. However, the possibility of injury is just the same, EKU’s players will be going full force and hitting as hard as they can in hopes of making a mark. Our guys need time away from hitting and being hit to repair and rest the body. Whoever made the schedule forgot that major point.

As I said elsewhere,

I would have preferred to play La-Monroe or a similar team in week 2, and then take the bye before the Mississippi State game. So you go:

1. Easy win
2. Easy win
3. Should win (Louisville)
4. Probable loss
5. Probable loss
6. Winnable (South Carolina)
7. Winnable (Auburn)
8. Bye
9. Mississippi State
10. EKU or similar team, easy win
11. Etc.

I'd just rather have an early bye

after a couple games of experience to finish prepping for the real (SEC) season and polishing the offense/defense. Playing against other teams reveal a lot of your weaknesses than no scrimmage can do.

Great posts and thoughts by everyone

I like that no one’s opted to ‘blame’ (probably should have used different wording… thanks to UKlvrJM and Truzenzuzex) the players so far. Maybe there’s something to UK’s schedule this year; with the 11 games in a row and all, it’s pretty easy to deduce that the guys are fatigued. Also hard to put the burden of a disappointing loss on a coaching staff that’s taken UK to where it is, but if Brooks says they’re to blame, then it’s hard to argue with that. Don’t be surprised if you see an article soon featuring an in-depth look at how the other schools in the SEC have set up their schedules…

Not here

I don’t think you’’ll see anyone, well very few, blaming the players here. Not from me, ever.
They didn’t just show up on campus and announce they were going to be on the team. Coaches recruited them, coach and prepare what they reaped to play the game.
Coaches and athletic director? Open season for me. They make the big bucks and they are responsible for what we have (recruiting) and the way we preform (their recruits and their coaching). If we don’t have a program that’s attractive to the recruits then maybe its time to find someone they might want to play for.

I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
