Best Programs 2000-2009

This is something I found, that rates the Top 20 basketball programs this decade.

The point structure.

2 points NCAA Tournament appearance

5 points Regular season conference title

5 points Conference Tournament title

5 points Sweet 16

10 points Elite 8

20 points Final Four

30 points Runner-up

50 points National Championship

Here are the numbers-

1.North Carolina 366

2.Florida 336

3.Kansas 325

4.Michigan State 310

5.Duke 255

6.Uconn 231

7.UCLA 201

8.Maryland 176

9.Syracuse 169

10.Memphis 157

11.Arizona 145

12.Illinois 126

13.Gonzaga 125

14.Ohio State 107

15.Texas 105

16.Loiuisville 104

17.Oklahoma 103

18.Wisconsin 100

19.Kentucky 93

20.Xavier 91

Some things that I would like to point out. This point structure places a high emphasis on making a deep run NCAAT.I am ok with all the numbers except 30 pts for a runner-up.I would give 25 pts for a Final Four, and 50 for a National Championship. Some other things I disagree with,I would give more than 2 pts for a NCAAT appearance, would change that to 10 pts. Why?Because teams from non-BCS conferences can win the regular season title(5 pts) and still not make the tourney.I would give 10 pts for a NCAAT appearance. Also,I would subtract -5 pts for failing to make the NCAAT.

Bonus points. This would be in addition to the current point structure.

5 points Winning Regular Season Conference Title/Conference Tournament

5 points Getting a 1 seed

Any Ideas?

Kentucky

9 NCAA appearances = 18 points

4 SEC titles (2000, 01, 03, 04) = 20 points

3 SEC titles (2001, 03, 05) = 15 points

4 Sweet 16 (2001, 02, 03, 05) = 20 points

2 Elite 8 (2003, 05) = 20 points

UK earned 3 points after 2005. 1 each year for NCAA in 2006, 2007, 2008. 0 points in 2009 for the first time since 1991.

I’d give points for 20 W seasons (1 pt), 25 W seasons (2 pts), and 30 W seasons (3 points).

I’d give points for #1 poll ranking (end of season), 5 points. And 3 points for Top 5, 2 points for Top 10.

Gillispie Earned Just 2 Points (NCAA Bid In 2008) In 2 Years

UK earned just 4 points in the 2 years prior to his arrival.

That’s only 6 points in 4 years (after getting 87 points in the first 6 years of the decade).

Add a point for each win.

Or you could do a little SoS stuff and add a point for a win against a " then current" top 25 team. I don’t know where you’d find that information — but there’s some sense to it,.

No matter where you're at, there you are

One Year left in the decade

for choosing team of the decade.Right now, going in order with the top 5, UNC,4FF 2NC,UF 3FF 2NC, KU 3FF 1NC, MSU 4FF 1 NC, Duke 2FF 1NC.

Couple of things to ponder,I think Florida will drop a few spots after this season. If Michigan State won the Title this year, that would make them 5 FF 2 NC,strong candidate for the honor(UNC holds it now,IMO).

Interesting thought,If UK wins everything this season, they could have a Top 10 finish for the decade.

If Kansas wins out, they tie UNC with 4FF and 2NC.

Actually Not

The 2000’s include 2000 through 2009 seasons. All 10 years are done. UK was 240-95.

The new decade (2010’s) starts with this season’s result.

40 mentioned it, but the decade is over

By your reasoning, we would have included 2000 in the decade of the 90’s.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

scoring system

so, a team gets points for
winning the ncaa tourney
winning to the semifinals
winning to the final four
winning to the elite eight
winning to the sweet sixteen
or…advancing into the tournament (round of 64)

notice anything? 0 credit for making the round of 32.

That’s a kinda odd scoring system, isn’t it?
I don’t have the 2009 info in front of me, and I don’t have info on all the teams listed, however, I do have information on the number of times each of the following teams advanced exactly and only to the round of 32 between 2000 and 2008:
4 Kentucky
3 Maryland
3 Florida
3 North Carolina
3 Wisconsin
3 Illinois
2 Texas
2 Connecticut
2 Arizona
1 Duke
1 Michigan State
1 Kansas
1 Syracuse
0 UCLA

For the person who came up with the scoring system...

….here’s my anecdote:

Kentucky won more conference titles than Florida.
Kentucky advanced farther in the NCAA tourney than Florida 5 times.
Florida advanced farther than Kentucky in the NCAA tourney 3 times.

And yet, the Gators blow us away by this scoring system.
Why? The scoring is all about advancing deep into the NCAA tourney a few times.
Florida did, we didn’t.

ooops -- bad data on that last post

the 16 vs. 22 numbers are for 9 seasons 1998-2006

the correct numbers for 2000-2009 are
Kentucky 14
Florida 20

By my count

Even after all the handwringing in the commonwealth, there are only about a dozen programs that have won more NCAA tournament games in the past decade than the Kentucky Wildcats.
And only about 5 who have won more in the past dozen years.
