Brooks Was Here.....And Ain't Goin' Nowhere
Stole the headline from another movie....bonus points to the first to get it right. Hint: The words were written, not said.
It is time for a little give back to the staff as the final football game of the season has now come and gone. As one of their harshest critics, I feel I should give gue diligence to Brooks & Co. So, here is a slightly tilted mea culpa of sorts.
At a time where big names are dropping from the coaching ranks almost daily ( sorry, Charlie Weis), and some people are no longer in control of their own destiny after decades at the helm of their programs ( many regrets, Bobby Bowden), and then some were just never what they were advertised to be ( not apologizing to you Steve Kragthorpe), we have a situation here at UK that makes things much less trepidacious for us as fans. Coach Brooks ( he of the "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" fame) is firmly entrenched now at UK for as long as he wants to stay, and he has in my estimation now earned that right. Pulling this team to a 7-5 mark after one problem after another reared their ugly heads this year, may have been the best coaching performance of Brooks' career. Losing the heart of your defense pre-season, your starting quarterback mid-season, your all-american cornerback for half of the season, and having one injury after another in more than one critical position would have destroyed most teams, and COULD have destroyed this one. Now, some will point at the schedule and say it favored the Cats getting to this point, and they can scoff at the accomplishment if they like, because I too have had my concerns about it, but this team accomplished some major things this year, and just like their failures as a team have been well documented, the accomplishments should be as well. The Auburn and Georgia victories, ending two very painful losing streaks were without a doubt, simply amazing, and almost ending a third with UT( it still kills me we didnt go for the 4th down at home, but I digress), well that would have been an unbelieveable accomplishment.
We are no longer the doormat of the SEC East. When we get hit now, we hit back. We will learn in time how to hit Florida, but now that God's Own Son will no longer be leading Florida, I like our chances better already. So, we all need to stand up and cheer for whatever bowl game we get, and be thankful we are there now right? NO......
We now need to make sure our PR department does it's job and if we end up in another one of these season ending I-dont-know-how-many-way ties, the bowls don't automatically dismiss us as an also ran. The staff gets an atta-boy from me as a whole, and individually at times, but I do have questions that need to be answered, and I will ask knowing that all of you have all the answers already, and can give them to me in full force.
1) Why on some of the MOST IMPORTANT PLAYS OF THE SEASON, was the ball not in Randall Cobb's or Derrick Locke's hands? I honestly and truly believe this mistake alone cost us a 9 win season.
2) Why not go for a 4th dn, at home, on Senior Night, when a trip to a next-level bowl was within our grasp? I understand the idea behind taking it to overtime, but overtime just leaves too many things to chance.
3) Have we worked out our early season communications problems? At first glance this is a yes, but I still would feel much better if Coach addressed it.
4) Do we really have some great kids coming next year, or is that all a smoke screen because we don't have anyone at all?
5) Is the QB job now back in Hartline's hands, and is his to lose, or has Newton earned the nod for next season, or is it completely wide open? I believe this one is easy, but for now we shall see.
6) We know that Coach has no plans to retire that he has made public, but has he privately made plans and has discussed this with Mitch, Joker, and Dr. Todd? Could we be looking at next year being his last? And my reason for asking that is not to breathe a sigh of relief, but to say that if he is retiring any time soon, it is time to honor the man properly for what he has accomplished.
7) Will we be varying that Wild-Cobb formation for next year? Everyone has seen what we do out of it now, so it may be time to add a new wrinkle or two.
8) Coach, when I am wrong I say it, and I was wrong this season. You got a boatload out of a class that was talented, but maybe not as talented as last year's, or the year before. Can you forgive me??
9) What are we not doing that we need to be doing? (This one will lead to all kinds of answers, good AND bad.)
10) Are we bad fans for asking these questions? ( I don't think so, but I will leave that to everyone else to judge)
It has been an incredibly wild ride this year, and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks for the memories.

very good a2.....
figured you would have something to say about the rest though……
Remember, we're having fun now!!!

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...
Answers:
1. I don’t know if this actually can be said to have cost us games, but almost every time it was at the very end of a game. Maybe the coaches know something we don’t. Or else, it was just a bad call.
2. Because basic football strategy says, “Take the three, you are at home on senior night and that ups your chances in OT.” Most of the time, that’s good advice. If we had been in Knoxville, I think the decision might have been reversed.
3. Good question.
4. We have the usual crop (lately) of good but not great players coming in.
5. I think the QB spot will be thrown wide open, and I think Mossakowski will have a lot to say about it.
6. We will never know when Brooks is leaving, I think, until the end of the season that he decides to make his last. Brooks is not the kind to desire a long goodbye.
7. I don’t know if we’ll expand the Wildcat package but I hope so.
8. Heh. I can forgive you, but you’re on your own with the coach. :-)
9. We are not throwing the ball well. Our defensive line play is not good enough. We may be running Cobb at receiver on too many plays, and maybe that won’t need to happen next year. If Cobb can get a few more breaks, we won’t have to worry about who will be getting the ball at the end of a close game. Our kicking game needs improvement.
10. Not at all. I think we would be bad fans if we didn’t.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Aren't throwing it well?
That’s an UNDERSTATEMENT. Our passing offense is 114th out of 120.
Overall offense rating? a cool 91st,
But Sanders is who we have to blame. He’s the offensive coocrdinator.
See, when you’re the coach in waiting and head coach of the offense you have just too many responsibilities to worry about these numbers.
No. 10 you can ask all you want, it’s the answers that we dispute.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
You don't dispute anything.
You just moan and groan. :-)

Sorry
Just the facts, Tru.

Well ...
… at least part of them were facts.

My nickel's worth...
Some of your questions are, well, unanswerable! Who can say, Mars wasn’t aligned with Pluto, an EMP in a galaxy far, far away disrupted Joker’s communication with the bench, UT has a KY Joboo doll someplace in Knoxville and they give it a squeeze before they head north, who knows?? I will say that there has been alot of passion poured out on these pages over the past couple of days over the football season and that in itself is a wonderful thing!! ’Specially for a Round-ball school, but I digress…
- #‘s 1, 2 & 3, see above!! :-)
- #4 – I think Joker & Rich will make the most of what they get, as always… Look at what we’ve already done with a bunch of 2 and 3 star kids!
- #5 – I think ‘Ski is gonna surprise everyone! What we lacked all year, with both Hartline/Newton/Fidler was the deep threat. Look for him to make some noise in the Spring..
- #6 – Agreed, whole-heartedly!!
- #7 – I think you will see some changes… It’s the old “you change we change” deal.
- #8 – Gonna have to agree with Tru on that one, you’re on you’re own there Mr!! :-)
- #9 – We really need to keep the good KY kids here at home… You’ve got to put a fence up around the state and keep what good football players we have here at home. TN’s tight end is from Berea, of all places?? Don’t think he didn’t play a good game last weekend, he had Micah’s number! If we can win the recruiting war at home, it’s a start…
- #10 – It’s a fan’s perogative to bitch/moan/complain, otherwise we wouldn’t be fans…
GO CATS!
If your wings don't sweep....
Eagle
No.9 is an excellent point. We don’t keep the good ones in state. And know, depending on who Louisville picks as their next coach we may have a harder time that coming to Lexington is best for them.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
As has been discussed here, many times...
The Bluegrass isn’t very fertile in regards to football player production… But I really believe we have to make a large, very large, effort to get all the good kids from in-state that we can! If we can keep the “big-name” schools from poaching our talent, we’ve started down the path to consistent 8-4 records.
You gonna tell me that UA doesn’t own the state of Alabama in regards to recruiting?? You better believe they do, I live here… All the kids want to play for the Tide, that’s what they grow up with. Same as in KY in regards to BBall… I honestly believe that we should recruit every Mr Football, regardless of position! BBall is a bit different, if you’re stacked at guard and Mr Basketball is a guard this year, you may have to pass that year. But you should be in the hunt for those kids every year!
If your wings don't sweep....
Too Many Good Players In All The Southern States
Wonder how fertile the state of Weat Virginia is? Or Minnesota? There’s isn’t a rule we can’t recruit from others states. Florida has only Florida State, Florida, Miami, and South Florida which we would consider ‘big boys’. Who gets the rest?
There is plently kids of major quality stock who go out of there to other states. How many on there on UK’s roster?
We went out and hired a ‘name’ coach for basketball. How many on the team from Kentucky? Kids want to play for someone they’ve heard of. Someone who has taken several to the next level.
Can LSU and Tulane sign all the good players in Louisiana? Wonder where they go?
I hope Joker can sign 15 five star players his first year. And the same the next year.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Understood...
I’ve got nothing against out-of-state recruiting, and think we should continue the process. The Lagrange pipeline has served us well, as an example. My point is we’ve got to guard our own state borders and get the top-quality home-grown kids to commit to the Cats… Obviously, we won’t get them all, but if we can get the majority of them, we’re in for better times!
Case in point… Shawn Alexander
If your wings don't sweep....
The problem becomes ...
… that the very best out-of-state players tend to go to in-state universities. It’s an easy choice when your in-state school is a perennial national contender, and you can have your family at every game.
Plus, when you are a school like Alabama, your reputation draws 5* recruits like flies, just like UK’s does in basketball. That’s just the way it goes. And it isn’t just the SEC schools — schools like Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech and Clemson all suck highly regarded recruits out of the same area. Schools with big football reputations like Notre Dame and even USC also pull from that pool.
As an illustration, for 2010, 9 of the top 10 players from Alabama are going to either Alabama, Auburn or Clemson.
Florida has more diversity — the eight of Florida’s top ten players who have picked a school have picked either Florida, Notre Dame, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee or Stanford.
For Georgia, of the nine top ten players who have picked a school, four are Georgia or Georgia Tech bound. The others are going to Notre Dame, Miami, Tennessee, Florida, and one is bound for Mississippi State.
What that leaves for UK and others is essentially a few 4*’s and a bunch of 3*’s, which is pretty much what we have been getting. You also have to develop inroads into all these areas in order to draw recruits, and that takes time. We have developed a pipeline from Georgia and South Carolina, but we still don’t recruit very well from Florida.
To answer your question about Louisiana, the answer is Texas and Arkansas, mostly. Understandable, since they are right next door.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
I understand
But Tru, we are right next door to Ohio, Tennessee, Illinois, well, you get the point.
Why haven’t we sucked up some the over flow?
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
We have.
Randall Cobb (TN) Tyler Brause (OH), Tim McAdoo (TN), Avery Williamson (TN), Morgan Newton (IN), Dakotah Tyler (IN).
The list goes on. Nothing really from Illinois lately that I can find, but that answers your question about the rest.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
"Inroads"...
Nice choice of words… Maybe I’m beginning to sound like a broken record here, but take a look at the list of Mr Kentucky in football. Goes back to 1986…
We only got 10 out of the 23 Mr Footballs… My KY math says that’s about 40+%. We need to get 75-80% of these guys to commit to UK. Merge that will the inroads from other states and we start to turn the corner in regards to talent…
If your wings don't sweep....
Yes.
We do. That is an unacceptable percentage.
Of course, most of those years you’d have to say, “Why would Mr. Football come to a bastion of failure like Kentucky?”
I’m just sayin’. :-)
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Shame on you!
Calling the Cats a bastion of failure!
I did see that Brooks said he wasn’t sure that he would be back next year.
Oh, be still my heart. Joker at the controls. Will we be in better hands? Nope.
But there won’t be any denial of who OK’d the plays that make the field.
Six Division One schools with a worst passing offense than the Cats. Its Sanders’ fault I bet. Isn’t be the offensive coordinator? Joker better marry him before someone offers him a decent job.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Well...
I can’t argue your middle paragraph, that’s certainly for sure! LOL Regardless of your stance on how football is progressing, the bottom line is that over the past 3 seasons we’ve had a winning record and have been to a bowl game (don’t get wound up here Paris!! LOL). However, in those 3 years, we didn’t get Mr Football on the team! The last one we got was Micah and I’d be willing to bet that no one will argue that the kid can’t play…
Bottom line, win the in-state recruiting process!
If your wings don't sweep....
Right
I bet we could get one from Illinois. The problem is, in most cases, they are left over after the others get through.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
another angle on the "why no cobb at the end" question
I have not been satisfied with the answers (and may never be) on why no cobb at the end, but cobb spent so much energy getting us to 1st and goal at the 10 or so that he might have been gassed. if we had “saved” him for the final plays, we might not have ever been in the position to use him.
to me, tru hits on it above in his answer to #9….
of course, why no locke is another question – i still think he should have been trailing for the pitch on the last play rather than in front blocking…
only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team
"I stayed up waaaay past my bedtime for... THAT ?!"
1) Why on some of the MOST IMPORTANT PLAYS OF THE SEASON, was the ball not in Randall Cobb’s or Derrick Locke’s hands? I honestly and truly believe this mistake alone cost us a 9 win season.

Is public “accountability” even part of the job description for a “Coach in Waiting”…. ??
Or is that a big part of the problem?

that was pretty good Sonic.....actually looks a lot like I did while I wrote that question.....lol
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
Well, ABC....
.
I think that I pretty much still look like that…! :-)
The fact that these guys are floating around in a kind of cloud where they don’t feel obligated to give point blank answers to point blank questions really annoys me…. The one is an old man at the end of a successful era, so he is not in any “danger” of anything— and the other is safe under the umbrella of “coach in waiting” who is guaranteed the job of taking over the program regardless of how he performs between now and then. So he doesn’t really have to answer anything, either.
When opposing coaches (Spurrier) and players actually go so far as to show APPRECIATION for your brain trust’s play calling— well…. shoring that up is one of the “Baby Steps of Progress” that we might want to consider putting on the “To Do” List for next year…
Might just save us another trip to the banjo bowl….
“That surprised me a little because Cobb was pretty effective,” UT linebacker Rico McCoy said afterward. “That’s where most of their yards came from. I guess they wanted to switch it up a little. That’s cool. I won’t complain.”

ABC
you choose great movies and have great questions!!! I think the one thing most of us that have found this site and post on it can agree on is that we LOVE UK.
I support Coach Brooks but question why we’ve decided to hand the program over to an unproven coach. I support Coach Brooks but I wonder what our record would be without purchased wins, expanded schedules and “rebuiding” years on the part of some of our opponents. I support Coach Brooks but feel he and his staff and made some terrible game decisions this year. I support Coach Brooks but question if we’re “really” seeing a program being built or just treading water after almost drowning.
Many don’t seem to like dissent but the fact of the matter is that you can love UK and and as a fan, still question results or decisions.
As I posted the other day, many of us are just going to have to agree to disagee about the current status of the football program.
I think it may be as simple as some see the glass as half full and some see the glass as half empty. We can quote statistics on either side to support our views but in the final analysis, only time is going to tell who is right about the glass.
I have raised all of those Joker questions too in the past......
and still would really like to know what they were thinking about those play calls late in the games…
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
How come ...
… you don’t wonder what other school’s record would be without “purchased” wins, since every other Division I school does it as well?
Just askin’.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
See, now Tru, I think you bring up a very valid point
but I want to make it in a different light……I do not see why they let these Div I schools play Div II schools and vice versa…..If you want to do that then make the games pre-season or something, but dont let the wins count, and dont count the losses for the small schools either. Make these teams earn their perfect records every week. You will improve competition that way, at both levels. Those small schools dont learn anything getting beat 65-0. And the big schools dont either. I know I can beat up on my sister, I dont need to get to count whipping her as a triumph.
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
I would agree that ...
… FBS teams should not be playing FCS.
The problem is, it really helps FCS programs by infusing money into their coffers. It helps the FBS programs by letting them “buy” a victory (unless, of course, you are Michigan).
So there’s the money factor and the “buy that win” factor. Only Ole Miss played more than one FCS school this year in the SEC.
The way it currently works is that only one FCS win counts toward a bowl game, as I understand it.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
How many schools need these games to get ‘respectable’?
Some colleges hae discovered the formula, to almost assure bowl eligibility, that saves them from disgrace. Some, it wouldn’t matter who they played, they are going to win six.
The difference between quality programs and wanna bes.
Who’s thought we would be suckin’ hind tit to Cincinnati?
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
I do wonder
Let’s wonder then Tru.
The guy who isn’t as good as Brooks at South Carolina played North Carolina State. Let’s say that’s his ‘Louisville’ game.
He played Clemson. Mmmm, Miami of Ohio, Louisiana Monroe, or Eastern fills that gap.
Mississippi played two AA schools so they could only count one. And they still got to six victories to get to bowl status. Let’s play two AAs and see how we do. Barnhart would love it. Brooks would love it. Can you imagine the pressure that puts on the Vandy game?
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Yeah.
So?
That Urban Meyer guy, you know, with the defending national champ team? He played Charleston Southern (FCS), Troy, and Florida International.
So are you saying Spurrier is better than Meyer? Hmmm.
And why would you advocate for an even weaker schedule? Seems passing strange. By the way, I’m sure we’d do fine.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Where did I say that?
Did Florida need any of those wins to get to bowl elligibility?
Tell me when I mentioned Meyer, I interested.
I didn’t day Spurrier is better than Meyer.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
You didn't say it ...
… but the implication is a direct logical extension of your comments.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Tru
Now which of the three buy wins was going to equal Clemson? I missed it.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
I'll answer that one ...
… as soon as you answer the same question about Florida.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Easy Enough
They play those weaker schools to give the non starters a chance to play, usually the second half. When Tebow went down is the perfect example. They have a quarterback named Brantley who has enough snaps so when he comes into a game he doesn’t look like a deer in the headlights. They have linemen, who because of this, will be able to step in if someone goes down. They have running backs with experience who, if their star is tired can come in and still be a threat to get it in the endzone. And blocking backs who can lead him there.
Let’s say they lose all three buy wins. Heck, they would have only nine wins then. And the Cats if the same should occur?
Ready for the Clemson answer.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
I never said ...
… nor implied, at any point, anywhere, that any of UK’s “buy” wins were “equal to Clemson.” Clearly UK didn’t play an OOC team of that quality all year, and I did not suggest that they did.
Second, I don’t really care why Florida schedules the way they do. My point was that scheduling weaker teams doesn’t mean that much in the SEC. It means a lot at other schools, like Boise State, that play in a weak conference, but very little here. Georgia’s schedule was way tougher than anybody’s in the SEC except for Mississippi State, and we beat them.
Oh, and by the way – would not Florida’s rationale work equally well for Kentucky? Just askin’.
But even so, South Carolina’s schedule was only marginally tougher than Kentucky’s, 51-46. And keep in mind, USC did not have to play the two best teams in the league back-to-back, then go on a two-game road trip.
As an example: UK’s strength of schedule was 10th in the SEC this year, but 56th in the nation, ahead of teams like Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, BYU, Boise State and Cincinnati, just to name a few.
So if South Carolina matters, all these others matter as well, and just as much. And none of it really matters at all unless you are talking about the BCS championship or BCS bowls. The lower bowls could care less what your strength of schedule is, they mostly care about how many fans you can drag to the game.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Why do we play the non starters
yes, Florida’s rationale would work equally well at Kentucky. But Florida actually uses those games to get experience for their non starters.
I believe we saw Hartline and crew late in the game against Miami of Ohio. Where was the teaching and giving playing time to the non starters then?
Good try, but comparing Kentucky’s non conference schedule to others is a joke. Glance at the opponents for next year and let us know were Western Kentucky,, Akron and Charleston Southern ranks in the rating now.
Looks like Vandy is going to play some people, at least two BCS conference schools NCGs, to try to get respectibility.. Why can’t we?
Its call ‘bowl eligibility’, Forget respect, All about getting to Nashville or Memphis.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Well being
a former Navy man you know better than anyone that a rising tide floats all boats!! There are 10 SEC teams bowl eligible this year if I’m not mistaken. As someone pointed out yesterday, over 50% of Division 1 schools with football programs are bowl eligible.
I mean…come on, let’s be real…modern college football has changed in just 15 years or so since the BCS started and every town in America with a football stadium decided they could have a bowl. This weeks SI has a nice interview with Dan Patrick talking to the chairman/former chairman? of the BCS who defended the current system and seemed to indicate the more bowls the merrier.
Frankly, it’s kinda like every kid in Little League or other sports who participates getting a trophy. When you and I played, the winning team got a team trophy and the allstars might get individual trophys but the rest of the kids didn’t. Not trying to start an argument on kids getting trophys but does a bowl trip today mean the same thing that a bowl trip did 15 years ago?
To turn around your question…..wonder what Bill Curry thinks about “purchased” wins and expanded bowl opportunities?
More Bowls!
More bowls is the answer. And I sure that will happen. What, two more next year? I believe I counted 74 teams with 6 wins this year. If so some body ain’t going.
Maybe they should require you win at least 50% of your conference games to be eligible. Have two bowl divisions. One for the BCS conference and another for the rest.
Shoot it down Tru.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Further examination
There were exactly 68 teams that won 50% of their conference games. Some of them didn’t get six wins though. One was five and three in the conference and got fired.
Bowl tie ins most certainly favor the big conferences. Thank you SEC.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Exhibition Games
Until such time as the bowl games — BCS championship excepted of course — have some impact on the national championship they amount to little more than exhibition games usually affording some economic benefit to those involved with the ancillary acquisition of extra practice time for non-seniors.
"Learn(ing) without thinking begets ignorance. Think(ing) without learning is dangerous."
-Confucius
Exactly.
The more bowl games a conference accrues, the better, since all conference pretty much take all the revenue and split it among member schools. So there is no real extra economic benefit to going to one bowl or the other, but the more and bigger bowls a conference can send, the better for everyone.
Plus, as you say, the additional practice month does help the returning players.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Exactly
Ah, the extra practice! George Leary says the extra practice is good to see if the players on the scout team are going to help next year.
The problem is you are still using the senior starters to prepare for the uncoming bowl game and that tends to limit the practice time. as it does in the regular season.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
