Randall Cobb is an absolute beast.
(With all apologies to Matt Pilgrim, the beast-iest of them all)
Take it away Brett Dawson:
Last season, when UK lost to Georgia in Lexington, Randall Cobb was the Wildcats' full-time quarterback.
He has a new role, but he came into Saturday holding an old grudge.
"Personally, this was a big game for me just because I feel like I gave that game away last year," Cobb said. "A lot of people say it wasn't my fault, but that's my personality. I believe it was my fault last year."
Cobb, now a wide receiver/Wildcat QB made amends with the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.
For all the emotion of the game, tough, Cobb denied that it was the biggest win of his UK career.
What's a bigger win, Cobb was asked.
"What's bigger?" Cobb said, then paused. "Next week."
That's when the Cats play Tennessee.
This kid has the heart of champion. Simply awesome

Simply awesome !!! He has so much heart ...
and I hope he gets his bigger win against UT. Being from Alcoa it would mean a lot to him, I’m sure. :-)

I go back to the days of Derrick Ramsey
.
and from those days forward to this one, I can say in complete honesty that Randall Cobb is my favorite player to ever suit up for UK.
For two main reasons:
1, He has as much pure talent as any of the other players in the league, and could star on any of the other SEC teams, not just ours.
2. He has the “stick a dagger in your heart, I am tougher than you and refuse to lose” mentality of all of the game’s greatest players. He is as tough mentally as anyone in the SEC.
How many guys have we had at UK that had both of those attributes? That strong?
Any of the stat-packing QBs?
Randall Cobb is my favorite.

Interesting you mention Ramsey.
Rather than Cobb I see Newton developing into a quarterback with Ramsey’s toughness and, in time, surpassing him in both running ability and passing ability. While Ramsey wasn’t a great passer Newton could develop into the best of Ramsey (running, attitude) and Woodson (passing). The season isn’t even over but I’m psyched for next year already.

Newton is looking VERY PROMISING!!
He’s beginnin got make good decisions in the pocket and I like his running ability. He’s big and can gain an extra yard or two with his momentum. Throw in is passing and we should be a decent passing team next season.
I have kleptomania,
but when it gets bad,
I take something for it.

I agree about Newton
and am really excited about his future, as well. I think the “Mike Hartline Experiment” is over, and the players will be lined up behind Newton as he continues to develop. I like how the future looks with Newton at QB.
As for Cobb: the Ramsey reference was more of a time marker, not a player that Cobb necessarily compares to directly. As a matter of fact, there really are no players that Cobb directly compares to, and that brings up point #3 of why he is my favorite UK player:
3. There is really no player in our past that we can compare Cobb to directly.
Evidence?: Randall Cobb is a sophomore wide receiver. And yet, with the score tied at 27-27, and an interception deep in Georgia territory giving us the chance to take the lead and start salivating at the prospect of doing something that hadn’t been done since 1977… there was Joker Phillips, likely being dragged kicking and screaming into allowing the offense to run its most sensible of series from the 8 yard line: place the ball on three consecutive plays into the hands of our all-league PLAY MAKER.
Our sophomore wide receiver.
This is such a big win for the Brooks era, that it wouldn’t surprise me if he had called up to Joker before that series and said, “Look Joker, you will get your chances to impress people in the future, but I need this win now. Stop trying to over-think things and get us this win…. just give the ball to our all-league PLAY MAKER and be done with it…”
I love having a guy like that on our team. Randall Cobb is my favorite.

Back to Cobb
There is no doubt Cobb means so much to this team, it would be a mere shadow of itself without him. I can’t think of any player in the past 30-40 years that has been such a vital cog to the team simply because he has the combination of talent, heart and drive to win at every snap of the ball and every touch of the ball. Even when he’s not in the game, he’s on the sideline rallying his team and urging his teammates to take their game to a higher level.
What he truly brings to this team is immeasurable because he is, in the purest sense of the word, a football player. With that in mind I don’t thinks it is too early for the university press group to lay the groundwork for a Heisman candidacy during the 2010 season. He is the embodiment of what the Heisman winner is all about – the best football player in the United States. It should not be about most yards gained or passing, simply being the best football player, which he is.

Then I am sure
that you really liked this Cobb interview on ESPN.
Obvious favorite quote from the article:
So what are you — a receiver, quarterback, slash guy? When somebody asks you what position you play, what do you tell them?
RC: I tell them that I’m a football player.

Start the shirts for the Heisman talk
RANDAL COBB
I’m a football player!
Nothing too cute to dilute the power of that simple statement.
Changing how you think will change what you think.
