Blogpoll Ballot: Week 5

Yesterday, I voted in the blogpoll as always, and I think that overall, things are becoming a bit more clear.  We are now almost halfway through the college football season, and the top ten seems to be firming up some.  The one team that still appears to be a little misplaced where they are is LSU, but since they keep beating good teams, it's pretty darn hard to move them down.

The bottom 60% or so of the poll is really fluid, and I can see maybe six or seven teams below the top ten who look like they are in the top 25 for the long haul.  The rest look like the may be in for a short visit rather than a long stay.

Star-divide

My ballot looks like this:

RankTeamDelta
1 Alabama 1
2 Florida 1
3 Texas
4 LSU
5 Virginia Tech
6 Southern Cal 4
7 Iowa 1
8 Cincinnati 2
9 Boise State 2
10 Oregon 5
11 Miami (Florida) 6
12 TCU 1
13 Ohio State
14 Auburn 7
15 Oklahoma State 1
16 Missouri
17 Brigham Young 1
18 Penn State 1
19 South Carolina
20 Kansas 3
21 Oklahoma 9
22 Georgia Tech 2
23 Nebraska
24 Wisconsin
25 South Florida
Last week's ballot

Dropped Out: Houston (#9), Georgia (#20), Michigan (#22), UCLA (#25).

Notes:
  • LSU really gets tested this week when they host a likely Tebow-less Gator team.  Without Tebow, and on the road, I would consider an LSU victory much, much more likely -- if they can find a way to score, that is.
  • USC's destruction of the Golden Bears exposed them for the fraud they are.
  • Notre Dame plays USC in two weeks.  Man, wouldn't that be a boost for the Irish if they pulled off the upset?  I wouldn't bet a nickle on it actually happening, though.
  • Cincinnati gets a bye week, and then I expect USF to banish them to the top 20, where they belong.  I am more convinced than ever after the Miami (OH) game that they are misplaced in the top ten.
  • Oregon gets a decent legitimacy test this weekend at UCLA.
  • Ohio State vs 5-0 Wisconsin this weekend in the Big Ten.  That game is huge for Wisconsin, as they have only beaten two teams with winning records so far this year.  Ohio State could see the Rose Bowl slip through their fingers with a loss.
  • Miami looks in shape to cruise to an ACC title from here on out, unless Clemson starts playing better or UNC proves that the loss to 1-3 Virginia at home was just a fluke.  I don't think it was, though.
  • South Carolina makes an appearance.  Kentucky has a chance to send them back, but even if USC East can get by the 'Cats, their top 25 sailboat will likely be wrecked on the shoals of Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa in two weeks.
  • Oklahoma State's time in the top 25 is likely to end soon to me.  The schedule just gets tougher for them.
  • If TCU can get by Brigham Young three weeks from now, they are likely to go undefeated.  Will Texas' Congress Critters join in the chorus for congressional action if they get overlooked for the BCS championship game as I anticipate?  I'm thinking, not likely.
  • What if both TCU and Boise State go undefeated, and Alabama and Florida lose?  Talk about your BCS madness!

ACC title madness

As much as I wish the ACC title was just a “cruise” away for Miami (I’m a student there) we need VTech to lose not just 1 but 2 games in their ACC campaign. This is of course assuming that we don’t slip up along the way either. Our catastrophe in Blacksburg hurt way more than just our ranking, unfortunately. If Miami does win out, we’ll certainly be in a BCS game, and I expect to be back in the top 10 sooner rather than later, too many teams ahead of us that are probably going to lose.

Boise State’s schedule is ridiculous. They’ve won one game and that’s it. Now I’m no proponent of the BCS system, don’t get me wrong, but pleeeeease their conference sucks. An unblemished Boise State is NO WHERE CLOSE to a one-loss Florida or Alabama, or even Miami at that. I can’t imagine being a team who drops in the ranking for winning in a not so dominant fashion though. It must be maddening to see teams jump you even though you didn’t lose. Ah well, that’s the BCS for ya.

Here’s a question: What do you think the likelihood is that UK makes a bowl this season? I would LOVE to think that we’re going to pull at least 1 win out of the next two weeks, but eesh, it’s tough. Mississippi State isn’t looking like a win anymore either.

Another question: Who would care about a bowl if we beat UT? I don’t think I would.

If beating UT meant knocking them out of something...

.
like officially gaining enough wins for bowl eligibility (which may be what is on the line when we play them), then I would most definitely take: (1) breaking the streak, (2) keeping them from bowl eligibility, and (3) being the last thing on Lane Kiffin’s mind during the off-season, over another majorly minor bowl game.

For sure.

I am even going to be pulling for …. Steve Spurrier ……. to whip Kiffin’s butt when they play on Oct 31…

As for the Poll: It looks pretty good to me. I really like Cincy being ranked higher than Ohio State, for one thing. It will be interesting to see which team will position itself to take on the SEC Champion in the “title game”.

I don't expect that to last.

I really don’t think Cincinnati is that good. I think they belong somewhere between 15 and 25, but I can’t justify putting them that low right now. USF will be a fair test to see if they are legit. If they are, well, then I’ll eat a bit of crow. :-)

It's too bad this isn't one of the years when Cincy and Ohio State play

.
They are both from conferences on the fringe of the BCS, and both overrated.

And think of all of the heads that would explode in Columbus if Cincinnati pinned a loss on the Buckeyes…

UK bowl?

Well, I’d say the odds are about 60-40 in favor. I think UK is actually better than they’ve shown, as long as we don’t lose an important playmaker like Locke or Cobb, or Lindley or Micah Johnson on defense.

We have a fair shot to pull an upset on the road the next two weekends, but even if we don’t, I think we can still defeat Vandy and probably MSU. I also think we have a shot a Georgia and Tennessee.

I would be surprised if this team doesn’t pull an upset. What they really have to be careful to do is take care of the games they are supposed to win.

Yeah ...

… I forgot about that Va Tech loss. But Tech has a tough game at Ga. Tech., at Maryland (not exactly a pushover) and at rival Virginia who just beat Carolina on the road.

I like Miami’s spot a whole lot better than Va. Tech. right now. But you’re right, if Va. Tech. can weather the road with only one loss, they get the ACC title.

P.S.

I’m happy to see ’Bama jumped UF.

Heh.

Frankly, ’Bama has played a tougher schedule than Florida. Time to reward them for it.

Will the real Miami please stand up.

Not rated. Rated. Rated up. Rated way down. Rated way up. Be sure to write them in pencil.

Heh.

Well, to be fair, they have played a tough schedule. The only schedules tougher in my top 10 are Southern Cal, Va Tech, Ohio State and Oregon. So far, I have them ranked 16th overall in SoS if you don’t consider future opponents.

The only dramatic change to Miami’s ranking was after the loss at VTech. We’ve played 4 ranked teams and beaten 3 of them. The entire football universe was hyping Miami like no other after the first two wins and you could expect a team that includes 53 freshmen and sophomores on the roster to let that get to their heads and lay an egg. Especially in a driving rain in the mid 50s (that’s nearly Antarctic to us South Floridians). The wins Miami has recorded are more than quality (say what you will about FSU, it’s one of the toughest rivalry games in the sport especially at Doak), and their (I suppose I should be saying “our”) ranking is deserved. If we keep playing like we have for the majority of the time, we’ll be in a BCS bowl. Now if only VTech would lose two games…

Even though ...

… Va Tech is one of the best teams in college football right now, it was a surprise that Miami lost so to them after beating a pretty strong Florida State team. That hurt Miami, but they are on the path to redemption, and their path is much easier than Va Tech’s.

Tru, I dont think that the tail-kicking that

S.Carolina is going to get at Bama is going to hurt all that much. After they dispose of us….(sorry folks, but I don’t think we do it this year, USC’s defense is too good) Bama should be at least #2 in normal polls by then if they are not already, and a loss to them shouldnt hurt too bad……of course by that theory the Cats should be in the top 25…..lol….go figure……USC may very well end the year being a top 20 team if not top 10…..

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

The way your making those comments I believe we’ve got a newer version of ’Leonard’s Losers’ in the making.

Hehe.

Well, I don’t think I’m up to the standard of the dearly departed Leonard Postero, but thanks. :-)

Met him

I met him down at a Kentucky-Georgia football game. He was signing one of his books in the campus bookstore. Actually seemed like a nice guy. Big fellow and not a hair on his head.
