Board approves "Wildcat Coal Lodge"
Just a quick note on the above. I think it is great when you have people connected in your program willing to lay down this kind of "bucks" for our university! Most of the college kids who are complaining just need a cause. Two years after they leave school they will not even remember this. Coal built "Joe B Hall Wildcat Lodge" and now it will do it again.
I would like to thank Mr. Joe Craft and his friends for their love and support for the University that we all love so much.

Stupid
I guess it is better than the “KY Jelly Wildcat Lodge” though….
First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

It is really sensational
that UK is very fortunate to have awesome supporters that do superb things for our teams. The Craft Center is revered by the nation.

Check back in a few years
Bet you don’t hear the word “coal” when people talk about it. It’ll be “Wildcat Lodge” – except in press releases.

This is my feeling as well
It’s in that same category as “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim” which as an Oakland A’s fan, I am always ready to ridicule.

Should have called it the Wildcat Coal Furnace
“Where Men Are Forged”……
A Name is just a name……At Wright State we got the Nutter Center…..lol…..try living with that one for a while…..lol….They called it Nuttier…..Nutter Butter….everything they could think of…..but it was a great addition to the University…..this will be too…..

It just sounds...odd
I have no problem with the people laying down the money wanting their industry in the name, and don’t think the word “coal” in the title really “unnecessarily politicizes the UK men’s basketball program,” as the protestors believe. Likewise, I’m sure if Greenpeace or whoever wanted to donate millions of dollars to the UK program, they’d slap their name all over something too. Though I don’t really agree with the protestor’s position, I also have no intention of mocking them—I actually think it’s really admirable for people to stand up for what they think is right like that.
But my issue with it is, like, how could “coal,” an inanimate object, sponsor something? It jsut sounds weird to me. Calling it “Alliance Coal” Lodge (the name of the specific company Craft heads) sounds more reasonable to me, but hey, I don’t have a spare 7 million dollars, so I don’t get to say.
Like hoboat says though, really, what’s it matter? No one ever called it “Joe Hall Wildcat Lodge” either. It’s just the Lodge, and it will likely continue to be thought of and called that way.

It does.
I frankly hate it, but I love the money. I doubt Joe Hall will care. I hope he won’t.
As to the protesters, well, I responded to an editorial in the Kentucky Kernel the other day on that subject. Rather than discuss it further, I’ll just link it here. My comment is the second one.
It appears a person has responded to me down a short ways below. I will be letting it sit there unanswered due to its unintended hilarity as a classic example of the ad hominem fallacy, among others, as well as yet another sad example of the impossibility of having a rational political debate anymore.
The Kentucky Kernel even published my rebuttal somewhere. They asked me for permission, and I gladly granted it.

Don't be fooled!
This is not a donation or gift. The coal industry is not ‘giving’ us 7 million dollars; they are investing 7 million dollars in themselves. No industry is in business to lose money. They get to put their name in a public place that will potentially increase their name recognition and consequently increase their potential revenue. Tostitos fiesta bowl, Papa John’s stadium, Nokia Sugar bowl, Wildcat Coal Lodge, etc., are all advertising tactics to get consumers to associate the product with something completely unrelated.
Coal is not a clean or efficient source of power. The argument that coal creates jobs doesn’t hold water. It doesn’t create any more jobs in KY than any other industry would. Any factory in eastern KY would create jobs; it doesn’t have to be coal.
The argument that it’s their 7 million and they can name it whatever they want doesn’t hold water, either. Should we expect the university to accept a 7 Million dollar gift from the Taliban and have a Wildcat Al Qaeda Lodge?
The most obvious point of all is this: if the university was so hard up for 7 million dollars to build a new dorm, then maybe they should have spent 7 million less on their new coach.
I hate to get so worked up about this, but it seems so blatantly insidious and nobody is noticing, much to the delight of the 7 million dollar donors.

Sorry in advance! but....
1.) I think this is an excellent move by the University to show support for the industry that drives the economy of the Commonwealth!
2.) You obviously are not from southeastern KY and I have no concept as to the effect the coal industry has on not just that area but the entire Commonwealth! The effects of a Kentucky without out coal will be felt by everyone. I will use my family as an example, we own a small grocery store in eastern KY without coal, you have no truck drivers, miners and their families buying, groceries and lunch every day, less business means less money to pay employees so there’s more jobs lost. You also can’t sale as much, so you don’t buy as much from your suppliers (most are located in central KY), as a result supplier doesn’t make as much money and they have to cut back on employees, thus the loss of jobs begins to expand throughout the state. Once people can no longer find jobs in KY they are forced to move to another state to find jobs, then you don’t have their kids in school in KY and teachers lose jobs, no tax money coming in to improve anything for the people still here AND IT CONTINUES ON DOWN THE LINE! THIS SAME CYCLE WILL OCCUR WITH ALMOST EVERY BUSINESS!
2.) I am not just burying my head in the sand; I know Coal is not the cleanest or most efficient way to produce energy. I also know that the technology is out there to produce cleaner energy right now! However, there is nothing in place TODAY to support our energy needs without a reliance on coal and until we get to that point all we are doing is causing a monopoly over what alternative resources we currently have available, which in return just makes them more expensive! If we take our time and get an effective alternative energy source in place that can support our needs as coal does then it would be totally acceptable to make the transition from our dependence on coal. The answer is NOT to cut off all coal right now! If we do we you will see that the economy in KY will be in the crapper and in 10 yrs. we will be back to trying to use coal because we jumped on alternative before a system was in place to support our needs!
3.) EVERYONE in KY needs to realize the effects this will have on the Commonwealth! It is not as simple as just bringing new factories in to the state (ask Michigan how that’s working out)! Instead of everyone fighting over coal or no coal, both sides need to step back and look at where this is heading. We need to make sure that our lawmaker’s have a plan that works and WORKS FOR KENTUCKY. This means we need to ensure that as part of the compromise to reducing our coal production, we are getting a stake in the alternative energy industries.
GO CATS!!!

By your very same logic
Slavery should never have ended due to its enormous effect on the entire economy.

That is true
and as sick and as sad as it maybe, the citizens of slave holding states we’re at least smart enough to recognize negative economic effects that would result without slavery. I think they may have put up a pretty big fight to keep that institution going, and when they failed to do so many parts of the South never recovered. There is a major factor that you are overlooking in your screwed up comparison of the coal industry to slavery, that is the very fact that no one is being deprived of their individual rights and the coal industry is not unjust and inhumane, at least not to the people complaining about it, maybe to those working 60 hrs. a week underground but they are men you don’t hear them complaining, they are just happy to support their families!

you have
to realize that the UNIVERSITY is not having to give up seven million………therefore its cost effective in their eyes to let someone do this and put their name on Its business. As someone told me at a young tender age……big college basketball is about business……..all major sports are.

Hate it
While I hate the idea that an awful polluting industry is getting publicity because of our college basketball program, I must admit that I am in no position to complain since one of the courts in the new practice facility is named after my grandfather (thanks to a donation from a well-to-do relative of mine).
My question is: Why couldn’t we name it after a former UK coach or player (or better yet, BILL KEIGHTELY LODGE) and post a plaque in front of the building letting people know who paid for it? It could read something like “this structure was may possible thanks to the XXXXX Coal Company. XXXXX Coal Company: providing energy to the citizens of the Commonwealth since 18XX.” This way, you can placate all the people complaining about the AWFUL name and it’s direct association with the coal industry, and still satisfy the investors.
Besides, the investors aren’t going to lose out if they rename the building something else. They will receive several different sets of season tickets, a direct phoneline to Mitch Barnhart and Lee Todd whenever they want, and behind the scenes access and information about all the players and games. Trust me on this one, it’s because of donations like this that I got to meet Ashley Judd. :)

This name is bad. If Phillip Morriss (sp?) had provided the money for the facility would people have been so okay with it being named after cigarettes? I don’t mean to directly compare the coal industry and the cigarette industry, but they are related in the fact that they divide people, often along a very passionate line as well. I’m from E. Ky (Hazard, to be precise) and some of my best friends own coal companies, and my dad represents them. That doesn’t mean that I like them, and it sure doesn’t mean that I want coal smeared all over the UKs campus and the UK bball program. Coal has provided for our region for decades and it looks like it might for a little while longer, but it’s not going to last forever, and I wish people would realize that we need to come up with something cleaner and better. What are we going to do in 10, 20, 30 years when coal is not relevant and something else is? Is it going to take some other huge donor to change the name?
p.s. Keightley Lodge is SOOOO much better and more appropriate.

Can everyone see what I mean? Having this name only splits ppl up. Why on earth would we want something as minuscule (in the big picture) as the name of a dorm split up the fan base like this? Yes in a few weeks (probably next week) we’ll all forget this, but I don’t think it was worth the trouble. It ends up making some people very happy and vilifying anyone who disagrees. Just try being from Eastern Kentucky and not being a fan of the coal industry. As most as bad as being not Baptist. Or worse gay.
(or even the mostest worstest- all three. eek.)

I’m not meaning to imply that we’re split for good. People clearly aren’t going to stop being UK fans because of this (and if it does, good riddance), but we’re arguing about it and we feel strongly about both sides of the argument. This could have easily been avoided.
