I would have thought that picture by it's very
words constituted a violation of the site’s guidelines???
funny nonetheless…..but???

No.
Think about it. This is the news, right, the whole Calipari-Obama thing? That happened. This is having a bit of harmless fun with that, and is not political in any way. The cartoon is right — Calipari is very much a cult of personality for the Big Blue right now, and Obama has been accused of being one, and not because of his politics.
There is no political statement here, hence, it perfectly meets the site’s guidelines. I’m surprised to find you so … undiscerning. :-)

Just kidding about that last line, by the way.
Gentle ribbing and an attempt at humor. Don’t hit me. :-)

A little political, ain't it?
Tru, I respect you a lot. I even paid 12.99 to read Wildcat Tipoff… and enjoyed every page. The “Mardi Gras Miracle” brought back memories. This post should have been deleted. Obama rules!!! Calipari just coaches.
Feel free to delete, along with the rest

Well, the site BELONGS to JL, right?

wait, what?
I don’t get what you’re saying. Because the site owner posted it—this is why it should have been deleted?
by blue kentucky girl on Oct 26, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, no.
Not anymore. I am the owner. JL created this place, but it’s MINE, ALL MINE!! Bwahahahaha!!! So I get all the blame. :-)
But I don’t see any political statements here. Just good humor at the expense of both men, and all of us. Not just the Obama supporters and not just the Obama detractors. Equal opportunity fun-poking. It takes an amazing amount of wit to do that without making a political statement, and that’s why I elevated it.
We must learn to laugh at ourselves, and at our icons (whether positive or negative) and enjoy the humor.

oh, awesome!
Congrats, Tru! I didn’t know that. Now I know who to take all my angry, profanity-laced complaints to ; )
I thought the cartoon was funny and insightful, and certainly not a “political statement,” like you say. However, I do SORT OF agree with part of what I think cincyblue and abc are saying; I had the impression, from comments and discussions in the past, that you (meaning Tru) really forbade any kind of political speech AT ALL—as in, even to the extent of even envoking the name of a political figure. That was why I assumed that this was a sort of exception for JL. That was just my impression, and I’m glad that’s not the case. I really hate the thought that civilized adults can’t be expected to not fly off the handle if another mentions the very name of a president or senator they didn’t vote for.

Well ...
… what I don’t want is political mud-wrestling. See, anytime one side mentions the other in a political way, the other side gets defensive, and then I have to referee a political debate on a sports blog. Then a bunch of people decide they don’t like each other anymore because of their political views, and bam! I lose members or they do something to get themselves banned.
Not what I want. If I wanted that, I’d start a poliblog, and believe me, at one time I almost did. Fortunately, A Sea of Blue came along and rescued me from my temporary madness. :-)
Unfortunately, political debate in this country is no longer debate, anywhere. It is just plain old mud rasslin’, and I as many times as I have seen good men and women try to elevate it, it never works. That’s why I just keep the partisan stuff off limits. If somebody wants to poke fun at politics in general, or can manage to do it in a way that is relevant to sport and non-partisan at the same time (see cartoon above), I have no problem with it.
The trouble is, given our biases and strong political opinions, that is surpassingly difficult. What I outlaw is political debate or shots at one side or the other that will surely escalate, not the mere mention of politics.
Here’s how it invariably goes:
Commenter 1 — I support Obama!
Commenter 2 — I can’t stand Obama! You must be nuts.
Comment er1 — You Republi-cons are what’s wrong with America! (note Commenter 2 never declared himself a Republican, only that he couldn’t stand Obama).
Commenter 1 – @&^% you, you @&&hat! Obama sux!
Etcetera. UK becomes irrelevant, only strong opinions matter, I lose members, you know the drill.
I want sports debate here. Let the polibloggers mud rassle. :-)

I was reading a couple of days back about you needing a second wire to tape two games at once. What I have is called SWM switch. You place in line after you dish and you can record 2 programs and watch on on the disk at the same time. You probably knew all this but here it is

ABC
Just type in SWM switch. Lots of people sell them. I installed mine. You can get up to 8 places to hook up to a DVR with 1 wire and record 2 programs at once. You can also watch either one while recording or something you have all ready recorded. DIRECTv told me all that yuck too! I have had mine for over a year. In my family room I run two Dvr’s hooked to my 60" HD. I am recording 4 things when the season gets HOT!

Remember that jersey that Cal wanted to send to the prez?
And the outcry on some of the blogs and on Coach Cal’s website?
It was all very ridiculous and caused quite the hoo-ha in the national media.

Maybe we should see if Cal deserves that Nobel for hoops after running the gauntlet of December, eh?
No political intent meant other than Cal is getting a lot of credit from folks for who he is right now … sound familiar?

When I First Saw The Cartoon ...
As a Fanpost my first thought was: This will not last long. Then lo and behold it gets moved to the front page — so much for consistency.
"Learn(ing) without thinking begets ignorance. Think(ing) without learning is dangerous."
-Confucius
by Wild Weasel on Oct 26, 2009 7:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It's totally consistent.
The problem is, too many people don’t have the wit to see the difference between overt political attacks couched as humor and humor that uses politics as a non-partisan foil.
If you want an example of an acceptable reference to politics, let this light your way. Hints — humor is a critical component, and careful balance is the key. Also acceptable is a reference to politics in general without using it to highlight or expose a partisan position, and of course relevance to UK sports is a must. This wonderful cartoon has all of that in spades.
Subtlety and gentle humor seems to be to much to ask in these days of Hannity and Olberman, which is why so many attempts run afoul of my rule.

In Kentucky, Cal is way more popular than Obama.
Although in the Highlands, the reverse is true.
