Kentucky Basketball: Excerpts from Wildcat Tip-Off
Continuing with our run up to Big Blue Madness 2009, we are presenting some excerpts from Wildcat Tip-Off for your viewing pleasure. I know I missed yesterday, but we'll make up for it along the way. It is Big Blue Madness season here in the Bluegrass, and I know UK fans are chomping at the bit to see our new team lead onto the floor by our new coach. It's exciting in a way that we haven't been excited in a long time around these parts, and it sure does feel good to me.
I can almost feel the transformation coming over the Big Blue Nation even as I write this -- the adrenaline, the passion, the anticipation is literally palpable. I wonder how many other large fan bases have suffered through a long, dry spell with little to celebrate and then have suddenly been reborn like this by a sudden change in coaching. I know Alabama football fans have had this feeling, and as the time grows nearer, I could almost wish for it every year. Who knows, perhaps my wish will be granted?
It has been long since Kentucky could celebrate anything. I remember celebrating over the victory in the Las Vegas Invitational tournament last year feeling foolish, almost guilty. You know it has been a long time coming when UK fans start celebrating minor tournaments like that as though they were an SEC championship or something. Kind of a sad commentary, in a way, but also a hopeful one -- all that pent-up energy in UK fans is about to explode in the college basketball universe like a supernova born of a blue giant star, and it is going to be a spectacular, unforgettable sight that outshines the light from everything near it. I can hardly wait.
Today's excerpt will be from my article entitled "Blue Storm Rising: The Rebuilding of the Roman Empire of College Basketball," something I wrote to get the Big Blue nation in the mood for this year's version of the Wildcats, and it follows after the jump.
--- Begin Excerpt ---
A New Skipper Brings New Life
To the surprise of many, John Calipari, then of the Memphis University Tigers, rapidly became the leading candidate and in a whirlwind of activity, was signed as the new Kentucky head men’s basketball coach. UK had been unenthusiastic about Calipari in 2007, but in the interregnum, all Coach Calipari did was go 66 –6, reach the national finals, and have two of the better recruiting classes in NCAA history at Memphis. That got Mitch Barnhart’s full attention, and before you could say, "Beale Street," John Calipari was the new coach at tradition-rich UK.
Calipari was everything Billy Gillispie wasn’t: outgoing, gregarious, friendly to a fault, and relentlessly positive. Where Gillispie’s comments were often marked by sharp candor and almost cruel honesty, Calipari was the consummate sharp-witted media darling, giving interviews and making personal appearances almost as fast as he could be asked, and in basketball-mad Kentucky, he was asked very fast and very often. But Calipari displayed none of the surliness or careful vagueness of his predecessor. Instead, he appeared to revel in the attention and did far more than just "hit a home run"—John Calipari took the first pitch with bases loaded and sent it careening over the center field wall and out of the stadium still on the rise. It hasn’t come down to earth yet.

I was in Orlando for awhile ...

Most excellent post Tru.......
Can we be any more excited about exciting things happening within our program? I was smiling so much at the end of your post today, I could not erase it. Talk about great build-up…

Big Words
In the excerpt I stumbled across the word “interregnum.” I thought it was a misspelling of interim until I looked it up. Lo and behold, it’s a word! A big one!
Congrats Guys!

Interregnum:
Not to be confused with interrectum a similar word but with an entirely different meaning and ofttimes associated with particular athletic programs – Duke University basketball being a prime example. Also commonly used in political discussions.

Fairly Common
I wonder how many other large fan bases have suffered through a long, dry spell with little to celebrate and then have suddenly been reborn like this by a sudden change in coaching.
A couple of instances that come immediately to mind: UNC pre-Williams, UCLA post-Wooden.

Ah ...
… yes, indeed. Both very nice examples.
I wonder if their fan bases are as rabid as ours, though. I know Alabama’s is, but you rarely hear about UNC or UCLA fans raising a huge ruckus — although, I do know that the SBN blog, Bruins Nation, raised holy hell about their former football coach. BN is also way bigger than A Sea of Blue (although they have been around longer, too) so I suppose they are not quite as noisy about it as UK fans tend to be.

Brandon Knight
Isn’t Knight coming in for Midnight Madness? What’s the latest on his recruitment?
by UK1972 on Oct 14, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Knight
Knight was on campus for his official visit back in September. I believe the lastest on him is that he’s attending Kansas’ Midnight Madness. But, I’m not a recruiting nut, so it’s possible those plans have changed.

I'm Real Laid Back
What I’ve seen so far of Coach Cal:
1) I don’t need to worry about him recruiting 3rd rate JUCOs
2) I don’t need to worry about him running good players off
3) I don’t need to worry about him alienating fans and boosters
4) I don’t need to worry about him alienating key media people
5) I don’t need to worry about him alienating the AD and the Prez
6) I don’t need to worry about his ability to teach and motivate players
Therefore — and regrettably — I don’t feel compelled to log onto ASOB every day. Sorry, Tru.

When Pitino's cats beat teams by 30 points
it felt like we were punishing the other teams for considering themselves to be actual competition for us. I’m curious to see how Calipari’s 30 point wins will feel to us. His personality so far seems to indicate that he will do it with style and respect. I hope this is the case instead of letting up on teams after we secure a 10 point lead.

Not All Of Ptino's Teams Were 30 Point Winners
In fact, his average winning margin over 8 seasons was only a point or two higher than Tubby Smith over 10 years.
Do the math at Jon Scott website if you want.

Must we....
have to endure the Pitino vs Tubby thing? For goodness sakes man, move on already.

Pick Any Other Coach You Want - Hall or Rupp
Pitino’s UK team in 1996 had 20+ ppg margin. His other UK teams had far less.
He did not regularly W games by 30 points.

Some Numbers
1991 – 8 ppg margin.
1992 – 11 ppg margin.
1993 – 17 ppg margin.
1994 – 12 ppg margin.
1995 – 16 ppg margin.
Far below 30 point W every time out.

Well, It SHOULD BE Obvious
The 1996 team averaged 20+ ppg margin.
His other UK teams did not.

Gee
my favorite part of basketball season. give me a strong drink.
Forty, do we have to work Tubby into every discussion?

Pick Another Coach Then
Hall or Rupp. You might be surprised at the similarity of W margins to Pitino’s teams
Too many people think Pitino’s 1996 team was like all his others. It was not so.
by FortyYearCatFan on Oct 15, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Tubby had 10+ games loss seasons
50% of his career at UK.FACT.

That Has Nothing To Do With Whether Or Not Pitino Won Every Game By 30 Points
He didn’t. Not at UK. Nor anywhere else.
by FortyYearCatFan on Oct 15, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And Calipari Won't Either
He’ll W a lot but not many 30+ points.
by FortyYearCatFan on Oct 15, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
BTW
Comparing Tubby and Pitino is like comparing Joe Hall to Rupp. Different coaches and different times. Both Joe and Tubby suffered unfairly with fan comparisions to their predecessors.
I’ll always say Pitino did an amazing job at UK but at the same time, I’ll always maintain that Pitino would NEVER have won a championship with the team Tubby had.
That’s another thing that Coach C has going for him….it’d be hard to compare him unfavorably to his predecessor!!!!
