Patterson now projected as a lottery pick
NBAdraft.net, a good web site, has Patrick Patterson listed as a lottery pick in their new Mock draft. It was released this morning after the U of L game. Patterson checks in at #11, which is up from #16 in their previous Mock draft.
IF Patterson is told that he will be a lottery pick, I think he will put his name in the NBA draft and sign with an agent.
I know Mock drafts can be somewhat unreliable, especially at this time of the year, but I think it's clear that Patterson is a 1st round draft pick and it appears that his stock is on the rise.
I would love to see Patterson return for his junior season at UK, but I think it's starting to look more and more unlikely. I think we should start preparing ourselves for the fact that he's probably gone. I know this summer the staff expected this to be Patterson's last season at UK and that was a big reason why they pushed so hard for Daniel Orton.

Yeah, OGET,
if any of the NBA scouts were staring at their TV yesterday through beer-blurred eyes, how could they not be thinking about him? He’s a H O R S E!!!! Didn’t look his best dribbling the ball down the court, but his shooting, passing, rebounding, etc., are right there!
I agree
that if he feels confident in lottery status, he’s gone. With a weak SEC with not many talented big guys (Ogilvy, anyone else?), I see him shredding conference play, which could bump him even higher.
Yes, two guys...Michael Washington at Arkansas and Jarvis Varnado at Miss State
Both are really good.
Varnado
would guard stevenson (or who ever is playing the PF spot) right?
He doesn’t seem like a center type player.
He plays center
Mississippi State usually starts 3 guards, a 6’7 forward and Varnado at center. His game is somewhat limited offensively and I don’t think he has the foot speed to guard anyone away from the basket. His strength is rebounding and blocking shots. Last year, he had 10 block shots against UK.
DOH!
What are you doing OGETARTS? Trying to scare the bejebus out of us….just kidding. Good for Patterson.
I still think he is a definte 4 in the pros and with a reliable mid-range shot will be very productive for years. I could go on but will leave it at that.
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
He's definitely deserving!
Best UK big man in my lifetime. That includes Bowie and Turpin – they had each other and Minniefield, among others. Pat’s just a monster. I just love watching him go to work down there. I can’t imagine the numbers we would have if we had a great interior passer like Erik Daniels or a PG like Wayne Turner to penetrate and dish. (No offense to our current guys who are really starting to shine).
Best UK big man in my lifetime..????
I think Mashburn would have a little something to say about that…
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.

Rarely played guard.

Guard?
He’s a three so I think I would put him as one of the best small forwards at UK ever but he did play a lot of four in college as well. For a forward he has a remarkable handle.

Guard As Frosh
Tay and Desmond Allison shared 2 guard as UK frosh. Tay also backed up Evans at 3 that year.

Hmm
Didnt know that.
He handles well enough for a guard but even given that I personally wouldnt consider him one. He’s 6"9.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
He has guard skills but NBA height
Ball handling – check
3-point shooting – check
Due to his Perry Stevenson-esque light frame, he wasn’t what I consider a “big man”. He’s tall, not big. He’s not one of those guys who sets massive screens, pushes people out of the way to rebound, and posts up defenders.
Prince was, however, good at posting up smaller players and making hook shots, just not “big” ones.
Mash was awesome
But Patrick is better in the post – I’ve never seen anything like it. Mash had a better outside game, though. Maybe the NBA likes that, but I am fine with Patrick staying down low to get rebounds and not shooting 3s.
Hope Patrick is reading this because I have to disagree.
- True, Patrick is NBA material.
- True, double doubles are needed at the college level to prove your worth in the NBA.
- True, Patrick is almost averaging a double double for the season.
- True, Patrick has one of the highest FG percentages in the nation.
- True, Patrick has a great FT average.
- True Patrick has a great motor.
- True Patrick is an excellent passer.
- True he is mentally ready.
It is also true that:
- He has played a very weak schedule this year.
- He has not exhibited the three point capability that the NBA loves (ala a lottery like Durant)
- He does not have a particularly good handle.
- He will never know who he is competing against in the NBA draft because it is an international event. There may be some 6’10" monster playing in China he has never heard about.
- He must realize the sobering fact the NBA is a business and that even becoming a lottery pick may simply mean it was weak recruiting year and the next year the “business” may not feel he is worth the investment. Being a star in the NBA is so difficult, the talent pool is so great, that even a talent as great as Patterson, may get lost in obscurity unless he improves his skills. The place to improve those talents is in college.
Again, is Patterson a NBA talent; yes! He is good in so many areas. Is he the dominant Wade-like player who will take over a college game and greatly impact the NBA, not yet. He has a choice. The NBA is looking for extraverted, showman-like impact players and those are the ones they are willing to spend lottery money on. They want these players ready to go on day one. If he accepts money by the NBA with a lower pick than the lottery, he runs the chance of getting lost in the crowd during the following years like Morris, The NBA is not in the business of “developing” talent. They are in the business of making money through “displaying” talent. Each year brings new talent to the league and he will have to respond.
The NBA is loaded with such international talent that IMO they will look at Patrick as a musclebound SF who can rebound. Without the improved dribbling and a three point shot, he needs 20-30 more pounds of muscle to compete in the NBA post or PF position as a lottery pick. Prince had the defense, handle and the three point shot and as skinny as he is made it to SF in the NBA. Most of the great UK players have found themselves as role players in the NBA. It is that good. My vote to make the most money is that Patterson shouldn’t leave UK until he can bring the ball up the court under pressure and consistently hit the three point shot. Next year brings in a fast point guard, a great little wing player and an outstanding center who may have the same choices that Patterson is facing now. By surrounding himself with that kind of talent he can better show off his skills and build a reputation that shows he is ready for the NBA. All-American first, then look at the NBA. Otherwise, I see him making money on the bench.
Pat
Pat doesnt have to be able to shoot the three in the NBA to be effective. He has to have a realiable mid range jump shot. His jumper is okay but I can see it getting better quickly. As for not knowing who he will be being drafted against Im sure his agent will aprise him of everyone that could be drafted with him. International players are figuring more prominently in drafts but not as many as you might think and especially not at Pats position. There are 2 huge players from China in the NBA. That’s not that many. This years draft class will feature more international players than normal but I think most of them will be perimeter players.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
I think ...
… that Patterson is still undersized for an NBA 4. He works hard, though, and his range is improving. You’re right, he doesn’t need 3-point range to play the four, and his handle is way too weak to play the three.
If I were an NBA scout, based on what I have seen so far, I doubt I would take Patterson with a lottery pick most years. But it does depend on the draft, and it may be pretty weak this year as far as big people are concerned.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
A little undersized
… but he does have a 7-foot plus wingspan and he has above average athletic ability. Those two things can allow him to play bigger.
Just a qualification
I’m talking about Patterson as a UK (college) big man – not his NBA potential. I like to see our guys do well, but other than that I don’t care about the NBA at all.
I agree with your points about Patterson’s readyness/appropriateness for the NBA. He needs to demonstrate more range for the NBA and could stand to be a bit stronger. But he will get it. Also we get him the ball so seldom with his back to the basket and a man actually there (he is so good at closeouts, and we are so poor at getting him the ball), I’m not even sure how good his offensive moves are.
But for me, like I said, he is our best power post player on the current staff and I don’t care if he takes a single 3 pointer or anything outside of 10 feet all season. I want him down low with a chance to get a rebound, off his missed shot or another’s. Everyone else can shoot those shots, let them.
Boozer and Brand
Both about Patt’s size I think. Brand is almost certainly heavier.
Antonio Mcdyess might be a hair taller. Shane Battier, Udonis Haslem, the Matrix, all with different games but all around Pat’s size.
There are a number of taller players as well but I think that the very good taller players make it seems like there is an abundance of 6’10 power forwards in the NBA that dominate everyone when there is really only a handful like, Wallace, Garnett, Duncan, West, Okur, who might overwhelm a smaller player physically. Heck those guys overwhelm larger players.
Guys like Bosh, Gasol, Bargnani, Jianlin, Dirk, Stuadamire, are all larger than Pat at the four but are also more finesse and are routinely guarded by smaller players often times effectively.
The more I think about it the NBA really has three types of power forwards two of which I think Pat could guard effectively. You have the out of position center like Duncan etc, you have the undersized guys like Boozer etc who still play an inside game, and you have the oversized perimter players ala Dirk who can and are often guarded by smaller players.
I consider patt just slightly undersized at the nba four. I dont consider it to be an issue that his play cannot surpass any size difference and I if I were a coach of GM I wouldnt think twice about it unless I was undersized at the five as well. We arent talkin Chuck Hayes size at the four here.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
All I am saying is that Pat is not an instant guarranteed NBA success and should consider his options
carefully. He is not graced with size of Morris. With his athleticism and a 260 lb body, he would be hard to handle. If that size does not come, he needs an outside game like Wade. Heck they even experimented with Durant at the SG position in the NBA. Patrick is an introvert and who needs to assert himself and show range this year if he wants to go high in the draft. If not, I would love to see him give us one more year and increase his marketability. Look at the big guys named above. How long did they ride the bench before they got quality playing time in the NBA? At PF is what Pat is looking for is to be “overwhelmed” by six or seven of the leagues best PFs. That does not deserve lottery money. Taking it to the hoop will be difficult for anyone at Patrick’s current size. He is a “tweener” who has to find a way to make up for his lack of size.
Wade?
I dont understand your argument. No one is guaranteed success but if Pat continues to play like he is he will go in the lottery. Pat is an introvert? Doesnt seem like it to me.
Floor game like Wade? He is a power forward not a shooting guard. His jumper is well documented. He doesnt need a perimeter game like a guard just a good outside shot to draw a defender away from the basket. He will not be asked to handle the ball.
Kevin Durant is a shooting guard that why the Thunder experiment with him at shooting guard. None of the guys named above sat the bench for very long. Many of them are very young players. There are 32 teams in the NBA. 6-7 of these guys are tough matchups for anyone. Thats about 26 teams that Pat would be competitive against. Many of the guys I named such as Jianlin and Bargnani would be overwhlemed by Pat and they were both lottery picks. You have to understand the draft is not a good indicator of future success but current success IS a good indicator of draft status.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
Just saying after the Vandy game, Patrick should think long and hard about leaving for the NBA.
Where is Kevin Love? Michael Bealey has put on about 20 pounds and still is not tearing up the NBA. The PF competiition has guys like Anthony, Stoudemire, Howard, Artest and Norwitzki to name a few. Signing with a team can doom you to sitting the bench for a long time, all the time looking each year at younger talent. I would not like to see Patrick pull a Morris move.

Rick would like to see him go
Have you seen the post game and then his Tuesday conference. He is all but campaigning for him to be POTY and thus go to the NBA.
Changing how you think will change what you think.
POTY
He may have a strong case for All-America (possibly even first team alongside Blake Griffin) but I just don’t see anyone prying the media from Tyler Hansborough’s private parts.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
HEH
you said……. private parts….
Watching Miami / Denver….I swear it feels like DV is feeling actual pain inside not having a hole to shoot T-Hans or K in somewhere. Best part, all he can talk about is BASKETBALL. He actually has some insight. We just have not heard him use it in so long with all the man crush crap he fills the mic with.
Changing how you think will change what you think.
Some of these other guys ...
… are getting as bad as Vitale with their effusiveness. Vexing, it is.
