Opinions on Post Game Bourbons

I am trying to branch out of from my usual post game selection of Maker's Mark and wanted to throw it out to the ASoB community to see if they had any recommendations.  I've got a fifth of Four Roses small batch (90 proof) that I am thinking about diving into.  Anyone ever had it?

Also, if you are going to give a really pricey bourbon, go right ahead.  In addition, however, please post one that is more moderate in price.

Good one.

Actually, I was just recommending a way to ‘get their the fastest’…..for medication reasons. True to my KY roots, I am a bourbon fan, nonetheless.

Should add that the heart of bourbon country is pretty much equidistant

between Lex and Louisville (slightly closer to Lexington I suppose, but not by much, with the exception of Woodford County/Versailles).

Bourbon

My sis who favored Jim Beam for many years, now loves her Buffalo Trace. She owned a liquor store for 10 years and and that is when her choice changed.

My choice has been Old Forester for many years after drinking Makers before that. OF is just a smoother bourbon and maybe a tad sweeter than MM. It just suits my taste better.

I have never tried the Four Roses.

Buffalo Trace is good...

I have ...

… Four Roses single barrel, 100 proof, which I am drinking right now. I highly recommend it neat. It is way better than Woodford or Makers without ice.

I love Makers with ice, and Woodford is OK neat, but Four Roses Single Barrel neat is truly a wonderful drop.

Basil Hayden, hands down.

One of the big 4 small batch bourbons, but much cheaper (around $30/bottle). It’s cheaper than the other big small batches, and cheaper than Woodford. Well aged, and delicious.

Never had it.

Will definitely try it.

Same family, I’ve come to find out, as Bookers, Knob Creek and Baker’s 7. All are delicious (and high proof)

UK Makers

Have you ever seen the special UK Makers Mark with the Blue Wax?

by LyricSmith on Jan 31, 2009 7:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Makes you wonder why Maker's has a red wax, huh? :)

Actually, I have about 7 boubons in the cabinet and puruse the choices everytime I go back down to KY. Try as I might, I don’t think I have found a better bourbon that Makers for the price. I do like Knob Creek and most recently Woodford Reserve. I laugh at all my yankee friends up here that tout scotch…I tell them its basically the same w/o the character of KY bourbon.

by HozeKing on Jan 31, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

For the price, Makers is fine. Some bourbons, I have found, taste better on ice than neat. Makers is harsh neat with a strong corn bite, but put a little ice in there and it smooths right out.

Four Roses Single Barrel is supremely smooth and congac-like with a lot of oak and rye, even at a high 100 proof. Basil Haden is a lot like that, and is also a high-proof whiskey. Woodford Reserve is sweet, but it also has a surprising burn at the end for a 90 and has a caramel front-end from the malt. It is also very nice on ice, and acceptable neat.

Buffalo Trace is really sweet and can be enjoyed either with or without ice, although it lacks the smoothness of either Four Roses, Basil Haden or Woodford. It isn’t as harsh on the front end as Makers, though. I love the fact that Makers has less sweetness than any of the above, but the strong corn character (very traditional) makes it less palatable to me without a bit of ice.

Knob Creek is a bit “hot” for my taste, but it does have a lot of oak and most of the bite is on the front end. I do like it, but I don’t love it.

I have had very few Scotch whiskeys that I could drink, but some of the more expensive ones are palatable, especially neat.

I must tell you — If you have never had Four Roses Single Barrel, try it. It is very moderately priced at 28-32 dollars and you will not be disappointed. First, try some Makers or Knob Creek neat, then a bit of Four Roses. You’ll notice the difference. It’s a lovely drop.

Nice breakdown, Tru.

I’ve not had the Four Roses SB, but I’ll give it a shot (especially after your description seems like it’s similar to BH).

It is.

I frankly find FRSB smoother, although it lacks a bit of BH’s character and nose. As a sipping whiskey, I have yet to find it’s equal without ice. It is as smooth as VSOP cognac, and that is a major, almost unbelievable achievement for a corn-based whiskey.

Whiskey

If you want something a little different, try “Bernheim”. It is a wheat whiskey. Wheat is what Maker’s uses to make a smooth blend and this stuff is mighty fine. Plus, it is made in Kentucky and named after the forest near the Jim Beam plant.

I went to an acupuncturist, who claims to be a big bourbon-head and he swears by Eagle Rare.

Second Blanton's. I find it to have a bit more of a kick then Bookers and BH, but less than Baker's.

Well

Pappy Van Winkle is the best bourbon i’ve ever had. It is, however, extremely expensive. It’s one of the few that is made with wheat. So I guess if I had to compare it to something, it would be like a really good Makers.

Knob Creek would have to be my favorite “affordable” bourbon. I know that it’s a little harsh, but the flavor is really what I like about it.

And as a recent UK grad I’d have to say that KT (Kentucky Tavern) is what the kids are drinking these days. You won’t find better anything better in a plastic bottle.

I’m no expert, but I’ve tried quite a few, and those are what I like in each price category.

by ben-p on Feb 2, 2009 4:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Oh by far on the Pappy (IMHO)

I’ve had the 15, 20, and yes the 23 year old (my father-in-law is even more into bourbon than me, and was kind enough to share a taste of that $200+/bottle goodness), and they’re all fantastic. I think the 15 is as good or better than the 20 (and $50/bottle less, give or take). Nothing tops the 23 year old.

A little late to the party here.......

….and even though I don’t have any new and spectacular bourbon choices to add, I just wanted to say that I’m a Maker’s and Woodford kinda girl. Those are my faves. : )

Also, with all the glowing recommendations the Four Roses has received, I will most certainly be trying that one as well, and with its very appropriate name — it sounds like a fabulous idea for a Valentine’s Day gift! So much better than real flowers and much better for you too! ; )

little late myself

Hard to find the small batch stuff in NYC, but I can get Basil Hayden’s and Woodford. Both are of course good enough to drink on the rocks (but not neat in my opinion). I can also get Evan Williams Single Barrel, which is actually not too bad. I little sweet and rough at the same time, still pretty good on the rocks.

I tried a couple of small batch bourbons on a recent trip home that were excellent. One was “1792” which is actually from the Barton distillery. Fairly high alcohol bourbon, but very smooth and rich. I would highly recommend it, though it is pricey. The other was called “Bulleit.” It has an old fashioned bottle and taste to go along. Very strong flavor: a bit sweet and with a lot of spice flavor. Very different from any other bourbon I’ve ever had. I wish I could get either of these in NYC.

Mmmmmmmmm..........good bourbon

Another pretty pricey bourbon that is smooth as hell is Jefferson’s. If you haven’t had it, try it!

As far as the cheap route, I like AAA or Early Times too. Of course Wild Turkey is always a good choice too, and not to pricey.

by slidemank on Feb 3, 2009 10:12 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Single Barrel?

I am not familar with Four Roses but isn’t the term “single barrel” redundent? Doesn’t bourbon by definition need to be aged in a new oak barrel? I am really a beer man myself. Hoppy ales. Bluegrass Brewing Company. I have a CO2 system with two taps. great for those mad March nights.

by LyricSmith on Feb 5, 2009 1:01 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Most ...

… bourbons are blends from several barrels. They all are made in the bourbon way, with corn, rye and/or wheat, then aged in new oak barrels.

Single Barrel bourbons are exactly that — not blended with bourbons from other barrels.

I love beer as well, particularly microbrewery products and fine English ales.

Will be reopening

Brownings, that is, before the baseball season. They’ll be in the old space and expanding into the space previously held by Park Place. Their brewing operation has continued running since the restaurant shut down, I think.

BBC makes a good bourbon barrel stout (in Jefferson’s Reserve barrels), as does Kentucky Ale.

Little Kings...

Can you even get those anymore? I loved those on our pontoon days on Green River Lake many years ago. Just enough refreshment for me when it was so hot w/o it getting warm before I could finish. It was an ale I think. Been a very long time since those great days in the summer on the lake.

Heh.

Funny story. My first month in college at Western, I went drifting down the river on inner tubes with the Sigma Nu fraternity as part of some rush function. We started out somewhere up river and floated all the way down to Beach Bend Park. There must have been about 50 of us.

I towed one of those Styrofoam coolers full of Little Kings. :-) When we finally reached Beach Bend and I tried to stand up on the shore, I kept falling down. Just a we bit intoxicated, I think. It was comical.

I think I have seen them fairly recently, in answer to your question.

Ahhhh...Little Kings

…its actually a creme ale, so a little more potent than beer (I think). It was brewed in Cincinnati by Hudepohl-Schoenling. Not quite as good as Wiedeman’s…but of course, I am a little biased given they financed my college through summer and holiday work. Now the brewery is a parking lot…one change in Newport that is NOT a good thing.

One of his worst days on the lake...

And everyone who was there on “The Rock” as we called it, laughed themselves silly, except me, as I was the clean up wife :-). We were loading the pontoon after a great day on the rock with the kids and our friends. Well, my hubby, in good intention as always, took up the big radio and proceeded to drop it in the lake. It was a good one though, I took it to Radio Shack and they said just to let it dry out. The dang thing is still working to this day :-)

Summary recommendations

I wanted an easy place to reference the recommendations of the ASoB community, so I took it upon on myself to summarize them. These bourbons seem to have reached a general consensus. The wisdom of masses speaks.

Four Roses Single Barrel
Woodford Reserve
Pappy Van Winkle
Basil Haden

Buffalo Trace
Knob Creek
Bernheim
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
Eagle Rare
Bulleit

Thus we can sample those we haven’t tried and judging by the way the season is going, we may get to them sooner rather than later.

Just a heads up for those in Louisville

If you’re looking for a restaurant with great bourbon selection and prices, check Baxter Station. 15 yr. old Pappy is $6.50 a glass, and the 20 yr. is only $12.

Very good considering in most Louisville restaurants, Maker’s will set you back close to $6.
