Somewhat belated Basketball Blogpoll for Week 7
The first of the year is always hectic for me, trying to close the books, deal with tax issues, budgets for the new year, yada, yada, yada. For this and other reasons, blogging has suffered a bit, and for that I do apologize. Today, I am trying to catch up on a couple of posts that should have been made earlier in the week
First, I will deal with the Basketball Blogpoll. My ballot will be first, and the final compilation ballot will follow.
A Sea of Blue's Ballot
Comments
- Who would have figured UNC would start 0-2 in conference?
- Wake Forest, Duke and Pitt are all getting it done.
- West Virginia is the most up and down team I have seen all year. Right now, they are pretty much down, but still on my ballot.
- California is really playing well for Mike Montgomery.
- Marquette is finding a way to win against good teams.
- What a week for Tubby Smith's Minnesota team. They are 4-1 in the Big Ten and are playing good basketball.
- Texas is playing poorly lately, losing 2 out of their last three.
- FYI, Kentucky is currently 44th in my list prior to the Tennessee win, but you can expect them to be in or near the top 25 next week.
Final Aggregated Poll
Comments
- Illinois needs to do something against Michigan State to stay in.
- Notre Dame is getting exposed for a lack of depth and athleticism.
- Expect Miami to be in the running next week. They have run off 6 in a row, including an upset of Boston College. Miami gets to find out how good they really are at UNC today.
- Louisville has a huge opportunity today against #1 Pitt at the Hall.
Comments welcome.

Yes.
I’ll be posting that ballot and result later today. You can find it at GABA.

Wide Open Race - There is no top 25
This thing is wide open… I have not watched a team play yet that I would say is the best… I thought it was UNC early but they have not played well due to lack of defense but the talent is there though if they decide to turn it up… UK should crack the polls with a win over Georgia… I may be biased but I think UK can play with any of these teams on a neutral court…

I don't know ...
… if they are the best team. They are one of the best, though. I think they deserve the top rank until someone knocks them off.

Wake is very good
Having had the chance to see them in person, they are certainly somewhere in the top 5, if not the top 3.
The most impressive thing about them yesterday was their discipline on defense. They knew not only when to double team, but whom to leave to double – they almost never left Oglesby or Rivers alone on the perimeter.
Their biggest weakness I saw yesterday was, oddly enough, their interior defense on dribble penetration. Clemson’s best offense came when guys drove to the basket and Wake Forest had a difficult time stopping them. Part of that was because of the attention being payed to perimeter shooters, but there are a number of other teams out there that have a good combination of perimeter and drive scoring and I could see those teams giving Wake problems.

Don't bait. Please.
Inject humor or something. One-liners like this really push my buttons.

U of L's win
The only good thing to come out of UL winning is that it will help UK’s RPI. Personally, neither looked like a Top 5 team to me.

Okay...
…who would be in your Top 5 then? Right now thanks to the Cards defense, they can play with anyone in the country. Now if their guards could just shoot the daggone ball, we’d darn near be impossible to defeat. :)

Wake, Duke, UNC
3 of the Top 5 are ACC teams.

I was very impressed by Wake.
If they can manage to keep their many talented youngster from entering the draft early, they could be scary good in the future.

I think Blake Griffin makes Oklahoma deadly
He is the most complete player in college basketball this year…. plus he has the demeanor of a veteran. Someone actually intentionally hit him in his junk from USC, and he kept focus and composure instead of fighting, sank both Technical shots while the other player was ejected. I think his presence alone puts OK in the argument, and BGriffin would have Tyler Hansborough for breakfast.
I need a Sea of Blue because I am surrounded by Tennessee orange!

Hmmmm....
….UofL just jumping up a few spots (and I know that doesn’t include the Pitt win), yet you predict that UK will jump at least 19 spots in one week (44-25 = 19)???

That's right.
Because I know what goes into it and you don’t. It’s that simple.
The media and coach’s polls count, and Louisville has been getting votes there all year long, justifiably so. UK has not received a single vote in either the media or coach’s polls so far, and that’s why they sit so low right now. Even Florida is above them right now despite having much worse numbers in Kenpom and BBState (the main contributors to my numbers) because they continue to get votes in the beauty contests.
It may seem dramatic to you ,but only because you don’t know what goes into my calculations. How many spots do you suppose BC jumped when they beat UNC? I’ll give you a hint — I track about 60 teams and BC wasn’t even on that list.

You gotta love simple explanations..
…I think I’ll try that at work.
With that logic, I’d be interested in knowing how high Harvard leaped in the poll. Seriously, I think this speaks of the ‘danger’ of swinging too far either way based on a single game. I’ll be interested in seeing your SEC polling. Georgia appeared much weaker than I expected and based on what I have seen from Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, and Florida, Kentucky should be the easy favorite in the SEC this year. I’m not sure I can even see where they would be vulnerable to lose.

Of course ...
… I can answer that question as well. By virtue of their 1 AP vote, Harvard got included in the 62 teams I am currently tracking for the first time. They are dead last in my analysis of those 62 teams.
As to my SEC polling, ask and you shall receive. A bit later today, I will have my SEC power poll ballot up that I cast on Thursday, along with the aggregated results for all voters. I would have posted it sooner, but I am a bit behind.
I think you may be surprised at my SEC ballot, it isn’t what you’d expect. That’s because I don’t résumé rank or rank based on how I feel about a team. I compile data, create an algorithm, and that produces my results. Even if those results don’t agree with my perception, they have held up damn well against realty.
