Kentucky at Tennessee -- Open Game Thread

Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers, Jan 13, 2009 9:00 PM EST

 Btn_chat_medium

This is the official A Sea of Blue open game thread for the Kentucky Wildcats @ Tennessee Volunteers basketball game tonight at Thompson-Bowling Arena, Tuesday, January 13th @ 9:00 PM.

Particulars of this game are as follows:

This is the first game of a three-game road trip for Kentucky, and is a critical stretch in the SEC season.  In order to get back into the national picture instead of hovering on the verge of it, UK needs to come up with victories on all three of these games.  It is an especially tall order for the 'Cats to win tonight in Knoxville, but UK has very few quality wins and badly needs some.

Tennessee has played an extremely tough schedule this year, and has quality wins over highly ranked Georgetown and Marquette, as well as tough losses to Kansas on the road and twice to Gonzaga, once at home and once at a neutral site.  The Vols are currently teetering on the verge of falling out of the top 25, and Kentucky could use the momentum from a victory here to get itself in.

Things Kentucky needs to do well to win:

  1. Force the Vols to play defense for most of the shot clock.  Patience is the key to beating the Volunteers, as they play good half-court defense only for about 20 seconds.
  2. Get the ball to Patterson early and often.
  3. Handle the press.

Things that will make it hard for Kentucky to win:

  1. Get behind big early.  We have had trouble every time this has happened.
  2. Turn the ball over.  Tennessee is one of the best in the nation going from defense to offense.
  3. Allow Tennessee to get a lot of offensive rebounds.  Offensive rebounds are the key to Tennessee's offensive efficiency.

Tennessee is very similar to Louisville except they are slightly less talented overall and are much less effective on defense.  If Kentucky can correct the mistakes they made against Louisville, they can take the Volunteers tonight.  The Vols are talented, but they suffer from poor decision making and a general lack of team chemistry.

This is a big opportunity game, much like Miami earlier in the season.  We need this game.

Go, Cats!

How funny... and prophetic

I love coming into a thread the morning after a game and seeing little nuggets like this.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

This would be huge

I was rooting for Indiana to beat Ohio State earlier, just to help us out, but they were hosed.

I thought the same until the replay which showed he used his chicken wing to push off

My problem with Galloway tonight is the haphazard way he’s handkling the ball. He has to understand he’s not at Southern Idaho.

I like him, I’m jsut not happy with his first half performance.

Porter has 5 and Patterson has 5.

Think Football

Run to set up the pass – pass to set up the run.

They will be so gun shy of meeks that we just drive and feed the post or just feed the post.

when they fall back, meeks will light it up again.

I like this style right now. I liked that half of ball. The last 1:45 got a little crazy but that happens.

Changing how you think will change what you think.

Put backs

UT has far far too many put backs. Hopefully we can pull away in the second half but a close game can be attributed directly to those second chances UT has gotten.

I hope that any increased attention Jodie receives in the second half can free up Pat.

I think the keys to the 2nd half is the o-rebounding.

we’re playing excellent D and just not getting the rebound, thereby undermining the efforts.

Ug - the turnover spread is sort of weird too

Patterson: 2
Miller: 2
Galloway: 2
Harris: 1
Porter: 0
Meeks: 0
Liggins: 0 (DNP)

Only 3 assists to 7 turnovers. I’ll take 7 turnovers, but 3 assists?

not as bad as it looks,

Go Cats

Lets keep us this momentum… great thing to take from this game is PPat had a bad game, most of our big men did, and we still dominated. Last year we were one dimensional and right now we’re coming around to a pure team. I still think to make a run we need to have an inside out game, not vice versa… but go Cats.. I’ll see you in Athens

Tonight, the hot hand and the game gave it to Meeks and he is capable to take it.

But what I liked the most is when we needed to, we put the foot on the neck and did not let them up and did not let them in the game. That is what I expect to see from Kentucky basketball. Great win. Let’s keep getting better.

YES! I was waiting for it.....

I swear, during the game I new I would see the fact that Jodi was a Tubby player posted just for the sake of posting it.

We all know. GO TUBBY! GOOD JOB RIGOT!

DAMN. I am approaching the point where I would take a time machine into the future and miss watching 3 straight NC’s just to SOMEHOW get past the freaking tit-for-tat OTS vs. THE BLUE WORLD crap.

Enjoy UK. That is both simple and profound at the same time. The ex-girlfriend is dating someone else now. That is not negative or positive. It is fact.

I'm

totally in on the time machine idea!

My husband is a nerdy engineer (no offense, best decision of my life marrying him) and we have a ton of nerdy engineering friends. I’ll see what I can do about them possibly rigging something up for us, I’ll get back to you. ; )

My goodness.

That was truly an unbelievable performance by Jodie. I wasn’t alive in 1970, so I didn’t get to witness Dan Issel’s 53 point game, but damn, I am extremely happy I got to see the absolutely amazing show Meeks put on for us tonight. I really cannot believe what I just saw. Wow.

Did anybody hear Dykes during SportsCenter? My-oh-my, was he ever lobbying hard for Meeks to get consideration for player of the year. That would really be something.

Not only him

All im hearing on ESPN now is how Jodie Meeks needs to be considered for POTY and how great he is. Awesome.

The best thing about this game

Is that this win, and jodies performance came on NATONAL TV. Its great to see UK get some press, and with jodies performance, its all ESPN can talk about.

Congratulations to Jodie Meeks

While my heartfelt congratulations go out to the outstanding performance of Jodie Meeks (which was truly awe inspiring!!), does anybody feel a tinge of sadness when a venerable old record (especially one belonging to the “Horse” Dan Issel) falls? Don’t get me wrong, I wanted Jodie to pop a couple at the end to make it 60 (are UK fans every really satisfied?), but it is kinda sad when some of the old names like Issel, Hagan, Givens stop being at the top of the record books. But WOW! I am pretty pumped about his performance….glad I didn’t go to bed at the half like I had planned!!

I wanted him to shoot at the end to make the lead 20!

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Keep in mind ...

… that Issel did it without a 3-point line. That puts it in a much better perspective.

Although to be fair to Jodie, Issel wasn’t a big long-range shooter back in the day, although he did become pretty good at it in the NBA.
