Kentucky at Tennessee -- Open Game Thread
Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers, Jan 13, 2009 9:00 PM EST
This is the official A Sea of Blue open game thread for the Kentucky Wildcats @ Tennessee Volunteers basketball game tonight at Thompson-Bowling Arena, Tuesday, January 13th @ 9:00 PM.
Particulars of this game are as follows:
- TV: Live on ESPN
- Gametracker live stats
- Audioo (Requires Microsoft Silverlight)
- Radio
- Yahoo! audio
- Game preview
This is the first game of a three-game road trip for Kentucky, and is a critical stretch in the SEC season. In order to get back into the national picture instead of hovering on the verge of it, UK needs to come up with victories on all three of these games. It is an especially tall order for the 'Cats to win tonight in Knoxville, but UK has very few quality wins and badly needs some.
Tennessee has played an extremely tough schedule this year, and has quality wins over highly ranked Georgetown and Marquette, as well as tough losses to Kansas on the road and twice to Gonzaga, once at home and once at a neutral site. The Vols are currently teetering on the verge of falling out of the top 25, and Kentucky could use the momentum from a victory here to get itself in.
Things Kentucky needs to do well to win:
- Force the Vols to play defense for most of the shot clock. Patience is the key to beating the Volunteers, as they play good half-court defense only for about 20 seconds.
- Get the ball to Patterson early and often.
- Handle the press.
Things that will make it hard for Kentucky to win:
- Get behind big early. We have had trouble every time this has happened.
- Turn the ball over. Tennessee is one of the best in the nation going from defense to offense.
- Allow Tennessee to get a lot of offensive rebounds. Offensive rebounds are the key to Tennessee's offensive efficiency.
Tennessee is very similar to Louisville except they are slightly less talented overall and are much less effective on defense. If Kentucky can correct the mistakes they made against Louisville, they can take the Volunteers tonight. The Vols are talented, but they suffer from poor decision making and a general lack of team chemistry.
This is a big opportunity game, much like Miami earlier in the season. We need this game.
Go, Cats!

Hey, folks
Good luck tonight. Anybody know off the top of their head what Meeks’ career high in points is?

How funny... and prophetic
I love coming into a thread the morning after a game and seeing little nuggets like this.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
This would be huge
I was rooting for Indiana to beat Ohio State earlier, just to help us out, but they were hosed.
if the crowd did an "Orange-Out" with their shirts, I doubt I could watch
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Good start.
That is a good sign. Gotta rebound, though.

Patterson has 0 rebounds.
That’s unacceptable. When did he forget that the paint is supposed to be his house?
No D
Disappointed in defensive intensity so far. Vols look tougher.
D hasn't been bad
Def. rebounding has sucked.

Every time we get a decent lead...
…I know a 3 pointer is coming from the other team. I literally said out loud: “here comes a three” before they passed half court
ya gotta...
say,,,NO GOOD..as it leaves their hand..works sometimes for me :)

Defense is okay....but it's the low turnovers

We've only fouled 4 times...
Part of that is due to solid defense. Part of it is passive offense from Tennessee.
We would be up 4-6 more points if we were getting killed by their offensive rebounds. Anyone know how
many pts. off those O-bounds they have?
i think
their first 10 points were off off. rebounds…at leat one or two more buckets.

Why would Harris still be playing with two fouls?
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
because Miller is overmatched.
That’s bad, bad, bad for UK. Harris is playing so much better than Miller that it’s not even funny
Jodie palmed the ball there
and got a questionable call.

Let's see: Porter at lead, or Galloway
Galloway has done NOTHING tonight except turn the ball over and nearly turn the ball over. If he plays the second half I’ll be very disappointed in G.
expected....
to see that at the end……makes for interesting half time talk,,,listen to nessler
" I believe in pipedreams"
I think Liggins needs to see the floor in the second. Porter is doing well, but I'm not that happy with Galloway.
The only people happy with Galloway are wearing orange!!!!!

In his (slight) defense
He had a pretty rough call on the charge with about a minute to go.

I thought the same until the replay which showed he used his chicken wing to push off
My problem with Galloway tonight is the haphazard way he’s handkling the ball. He has to understand he’s not at Southern Idaho.
I like him, I’m jsut not happy with his first half performance.
by Ken Howlett on Jan 13, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions
He used the chicken wing two or three times on that play.
The third time the official had to call it.
by BBallSophist on Jan 13, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions
I thought he played well up until the final two minutes.
He pushed the ball and made good decisions. He just had a bad final two minutes with those turnovers.
All in all, I'm happy. We need to get Patterson involved in the second half.
Let’s hope we can put back-to-back halves together.
Billy G
if hes the coach i think he is……we increase lead in 2ed half

Meeks has 26 points at the half
Porter has 5 and Patterson has 5.
I love what Meeks is doing, but we need someone else to step up.

by Thomas Hunt Morgan on Jan 13, 2009 10:02 PM EST up reply actions
Yes, true, but I don't see Meeks scoring 26 in the 2nd half
We gotta get Patterson more involved and we need some production from Stevenson.
GBB!!!
Think Football
Run to set up the pass – pass to set up the run.
They will be so gun shy of meeks that we just drive and feed the post or just feed the post.
when they fall back, meeks will light it up again.
I like this style right now. I liked that half of ball. The last 1:45 got a little crazy but that happens.
Changing how you think will change what you think.
Patterson with only five, and two missed bunnies.

We get so used to a guy making everything he shoots, that it's supremely disappointing when he misses
I look for him to be more of a force in the 2nd
by Ken Howlett on Jan 13, 2009 10:05 PM EST up reply actions
Put backs
UT has far far too many put backs. Hopefully we can pull away in the second half but a close game can be attributed directly to those second chances UT has gotten.
I hope that any increased attention Jodie receives in the second half can free up Pat.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
Yeah - I can handle shooting well, but getting all these putbacks it awful, b/c they're not shooting well. These putbacks are
skewing their numbers for sure.
We must ...
… improve on the defensive glass. That is what is hurting us.
Tyler Smith is the luckiest player I have ever seen. I have never seen more shots that ought to miss find a way to go in.
Sheesh.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
I think Patterson wiill get his,,,,
as long as the rest of the team doesn;t stand around and watch Meeks

That’s a great question.
by Ken Howlett on Jan 13, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions
It's called the Gillispie Effect.
The unknown black hole that sometimes absorbs his players without a peep.
Josh Harrellson also seems to be caught in it, as well as Ramon Harris’ third foul.

Nostradamus, that one.

patterson's injust
is clearly affecting his shot.
I think the keys to the 2nd half is the o-rebounding.
we’re playing excellent D and just not getting the rebound, thereby undermining the efforts.
I’m happy with the ball-handling but the frosh seem to be rattled in the environment
Ug - the turnover spread is sort of weird too
Patterson: 2
Miller: 2
Galloway: 2
Harris: 1
Porter: 0
Meeks: 0
Liggins: 0 (DNP)
Only 3 assists to 7 turnovers. I’ll take 7 turnovers, but 3 assists?
Announcers
are awful.
Harris isnt Harrison
They keep talking about jodie like he came out of nowhere after playing the last two seasons and didnt realize he spent the vast majority of his soph season hurt and his freshman season he put up 8 point a game.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
"If you saw Jodie Meeks in his first two years, you wouldn't believe he could be this good a shooter"

most of meeks shots
are off of the dribble this time around.
usually they’re set or screen-curls
Have no fear:
We’ll send the NBA Scouts the stats of all the point guards that UT has faced this year. Meeks will look average. ;-)

Wow...
On a negative note (cause I’m a perfectionist, and every little mistake annoys me), Patterson is getting abused by Chism. Patterson is better than Chism. This shouldn’t happen.
his injury
really seems to be bothering his shot
