U2 -- New Year's Day

Classic song from the album "War," especially sweet from the vinyl LP.  Now for news:

Star-divide

Kentucky vs. Louisville News

  • Louisville could be the big victory that UK needs, but since the Cardinals lost last night to UNLV, it will mean a lot less than it might have.

Liberty Bowl News

  • Tony Dixon expects to get more carries in the Liberty Bowl, and that's fine with him.  Kentucky is only two deep in the position with injuries and academic casualties.
  • John Clay has some Memphis barbecue recommendations.
  • The Dead Guy has a preview of the Liberty Bowl.
  • Who will be returning punts for the Wildcats?  I vote for Winston Guy.  I think that kid is going to be special at UK, and he has had a couple of excellent kick returns.
  • Kentucky's receivers hope to make an impact in the Liberty Bowl.  Brooks says they are better.  I sure hope so.
  • Chip Crosby says ECU's defense is plenty good enough for the 'Cats.

Other UK Sports News

  • Cyprien talks about Patterson's slow start and subsequent return to form.
  • UK women on a three-game winning streak.

NCAA Basketball News

  • The Courier-Journal looks at Louisville's loss to UNLV.
  • More love for UNLV from Fanhouse, and the Mountain West as well.
  • Minnesota's football team and basketball team lose on the same day.  Been there, done that.
  • Just after reaching the top 25, Michigan goes down to Wisconsin.

NCAA Football News

  • Congratulations to the Vanderbilt Commodores, Music City Bowl Champions of 2008.  I love the SEC beating the ACC.  More cheers for Vandy from the Tennesseean.
  • LSU rolls over the Rambin' Wreck in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.  Another ACC team falls to the SEC.

Other News of Interest

  • Some Tayshaun news.
  • Kentucky folk musician's works to be enshrined in the Library of Congress.  From Perry County, no less.

This is setting up to be a season of real disappointment for the school up the road. I’m sure Ricky P in his worst nightmares never anticipated four non-conference losses (after they lose to the Cats on Sunday of course!). Throw in the murderers row that is the Big East conference schedule and you are easily looking at double digit losses for a year in which the Cards were expected to contend for a national title.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Yes

Pitino is very exasperated at this time with the lack of execution from his team. I saw the end of the game and he left that court lickety-split…did not even offer a handshake to Lon Kruger or anyone. I don’t know that I have ever seen him do that.

Leaving the court

I saw that too. He high-tailed it straight to the nearest exit ramp. I don’t even think it was the one Louisville usually uses.

I Read

He was angry at the No Foul Call and was chasing the ref(s) to complain.

He’s lost 3 games to lesser talented teams.

I still contend,

They really, really, really miss David Padgett. He was the glue that held last year’s team together and their entire offense centered (no pun intended) around him.

Two months (!). Two weeks. Two pencils.

Puns should always be intended

Always. (And if they’re not, you should pretend that they were!)

Yup, Padgett was a very big loss

… Also, I think Williams, Clark and Smith really haven’t stepped up this year like I think Pitino and others were expecting. They’ve been decent, but that trio has to be better if Louisville is going to live up to expectations.

I just hope...

that ‘Ricky P’ doesn’t find a solution to his problems before Sunday.

SEC teams are struggling today

Outback Bowl — Iowa 31, South Carolina 10 (Final)

Capital One Bowl — Right now Georgia is losing 6-3…. it’s early in the 3rd quater

Yep

I think the Georgia game is sort of fluky and SC just stinks offensively.

Georgia won!

They played great in the 2nd half.

Final:

Georgia 24, Michigan St. 12

SEC Bowl Record

Now 3-1 with four games to go. Let’s hope that the Cats can continue the hot ways.

That will just ...

… be great. Georgia dominated the second half. Considering how many injuries that team had, I think they should be as satisfied with their season as anyone in the country.

Rose Bowl just started

It should be a great game. Both teams are really evenly matched.

Ugh.

Blowout at the half. I didn’t see much, just the first touchdown by USC.

USC is who I thought they were....

arguably the best team in the country. Its past time for a playoff!

Don't need an entire playoff

They just need Florida and Oklahoma to have played yesterday. Then the winners play again next week.

The BCS title game isn’t until next Thursday anyways!

I think ...

… the “plus one” system is a nice compromise. It doesn’t remove all the issues with the current system, but I heard one of the TV announcers do a nice job of advocating it. His argument was that you play the five BCS bowls (there are only 4 now, so one would have to be added) on Dec 31 and Jan 1, and the BCS championship game a week later. In the interregnum, the BCS would decide based on the regular season plus the bowls which two of the five teams would wind up in the final game.

It’s a tiny, incremental improvement, perhaps, but at least it moves the major bowls back front and center.

I think the Big 10 is overrated in every sport.

I’m just glad Ohio State is not playing in the Nat’l Championship again this year. Boy do they seem to choke!
