Legendary UTEP Coach Don Haskins Passes Away

I am so sorry to hear this. For those who might not recognize the name, this is the guy who coached Texas Western to a victory over UK in the 1966 national championship.

He was a really nice man, and a fine coach. May he rest in peace, and may God be with his family.

The Game That Made Him Famous

http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/Games/19660319TexasWestern.html Don Haskins coached his Miners to an upset W over Rupps Runts in 1966.

That was the first year of my 40 Year Cat Fandom so it was a painful L for me.

I didn't ...

… see that game except in replays, and it is painful to me. :-)

Editted

a book written by the team doctor for UK who said the entire team that day was sick from some intestinal issue and were fed milkshakes all day to get something in them. I never knew if that was just excuse making or a part of the story no one picked up on.

True But Not A Huge Factor

The Miners beat the Cats fair and square that day.

Both teams were 27-1 going into the game. UK was #1 and TW #3 in the nation.

Haskins

I have always felt very strongly about Haskins, and followed his career very closely. I have great admiration for what he accomplished, at what at the time, was a ‘backwoods’ university.

It is certainly not his fault that the media has twisted and spun the events of ’66, and just because his team defeated UK does not diminish his tremendous accomplishments, not only in ’66, but throughout his entire career.

May he rest in peace.
