Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Let's have a survey! Favorite sports blogs (non-UK division)

We need a new fanpost to spur some interaction and discussion!  I was kicking around the idea of doing this during the summer, but never got around to it (yes, I am that lazy).  What are your favorite (non - UK related) blogs to read?

Star-divide

So here's the deal, just list some (or all) of your favorite non-UK sports blogs.  Provide the links to each one, and maybe a few comments about what you like about each.

I think this will do a couple of things:

a) Give us all a chance to get better acquainted with our fellow ASoBers (am I the only one who gets fleeting thoughts of a non-endearing phrase every time I read "ASoB"?).

b) Introduce some great blogs to each other.

c) I don't really have a third benefit, but I think lists should always have at least 3 items.

I'll go first.  All of mine are baseball related as MLB is my favorite sport along with college basketball.

  1. Athletics Nation : A fellow SBN blog that covers the Oakland A's.  I've been an A's fan since I was a kid and Rickey Henderson was flying around the bases.  AN has given me the chance to become more connected to my favorite team than I ever thought possible and it's one of the most active blogs out there.

  2. FireJoeMorgan : Exposing lazy, irrational, and just plain bad sports writing in a humorous and entertaining way.  Despite the name, they'll write about any and all sport writers and announcers, not just Joe Morgan.  If you want to tear your teeth out every time you watch Around the Horn, this blog is for you.

  3. Joe Posnanski : In contrast to #2, Joe Posnanski is one of the best sports writers out there.  He writes for the Kansas City Star and mostly covers the Royals, but in his blog he writes about whatever happens to be on his mind that day, not just baseball.

  4. Shysterball : As the name suggests, the blogger here (Craig Calcaterra) is a lawyer by profession, and is yet another example of how you can find great and compelling writing anywhere.

  5. Rob Neyer : (ESPN Insider req'd) I debated whether I should include Rob, because his blog isn't free, but it's also the sole reason I have an Insider subscription.

There are a few more that I visit now and again, but those are the ones that I check multiple times daily.

Of course A Sea Of Blue and Kentucky Sports Radio are my favorite Kentucky blogs, but for a non UK related subject I like Podium Cafe covering all things cycling.

Holy Crap!!

You mean to tell me that ASoB isn’t the only sports blog out there? Wow, who knew, certainly not me. I am just kidding, of course. I am a loyal and one-sports-blog kind of girl anyway, so this is really the only place for me – my one-stop-shop to all things UK sports. : )

Although I don’t have any new groundbreaking and absolute must-read sports blog links to contribute (I will spare you all the links to the decorating, fashion, mommy and other ridiculously-girly blogs that I do read) I just wanted to say that I thought this FanPost was a super-cute idea to stir up some more conversation. I mean, Tru, Ken, FGM and JL can’t be expected to do everything around here. : )

Here are a few I read.
Disclaimer: Some of these contain some salty language and other not suitable stuff for the youngsters.

Awful Announcing: Just what it sounds like. “putting announcers on notice since 2006”

TheBigLead: Hilarious and irreverent look at sports and journalism.

Everydayshouldbesaturday: College football lovers of the world Unite!

Deadspin: another irreverent look at sports, but deteriorated since editor Will Leitch left.

Kige Ramsey, YouTubeSports. Kentucky’s number one fan posts video diaries about his Wildcats, WKU, the Tennessee Titans and his hometown Russellville Panthers. Has become a national cult fan.

FireJoeMorgan: great take on baseball and dedicated to cause we can all rally behind.

PackerGeeks: If you’re a packers fan.

A Sea of Blue, Tom Leach’s Blog and Aaron’s UK Basketball Blog are the only UK blogs I read.

Two months (!). Two weeks. Two pencils.

Thanks Tru...

We try to have some great content at Over The Pylon. We wouldn’t be nearly as successful without your support. So our thanks to you for that.

For those that haven’t checked it out, give it a whirl. It’s like EDSBS only more Kentucky and Rich Brooks awesomeness with a side of Ball State.

OverThePylon...

I truly enjoy your site and I absolutely loved the Navy recuit video you had there a few weeks ago. I even sent it on to Tru as I knew he was former Navy as is my son.

Great work over there.

Much appreciated

Always nice to hear. Thanks for the readership!

Ball State ...

… is 3-0, and has played comp as tough as UK has.

Do you think they will get the W over Indiana this time after teasing so in 2006? I am not considering last year’s game. But it certainly sucks that they won’t give you a home-home.

Good luck on that one. And thanks for stopping by.

IU Game

You know, Tru… I have my doubts about this game. If Ball State plays they way they are capable, as does Indiana, then I think BSU wins a close game. The problem is either team is capable of winning if the other doesn’t bring their A+ game.

Either way it’s going to be a shootout. And a fun fun fun game to watch.

Gate21?

Tru, I just clicked on your link for Gate21 and it brought up a “this domain name for sale” page. Is the link right?

I'm into Deadspin too.

And, this isn’t a blog, but it DOES have the very irreverant tone of a blog—I’m totally obsessed with the Onion sports page.

Sports-wise, college basketball in general and UK basketball in particular is my one-and-only—I don’t follow any other team much—so I really only read humor-related sports blogs besides my super-favorite ASOB and my periennial second-place KSR. During the season, I do occasionally check Yocohoops or Kenpom.

Like Bigskycat said, y’all probably aren’t interested in my other favorite blogs—all mainly fashion- or book-related (or in my low-brow moments, celebrity gossip-related).

What I read everyday when at home...

I have to start with my favorite ASoB, and then I just click all the links here and go from there.

Over The Pylon, Deadspin, AOL Fanhouse, the ESPN page, and CBS sports page I always try to read.

I am I suppose retired so I have a lot of time to surf the Internet and I enjoy every minute.

Card Chronicle...

How could I forget? I only went there because of Tru and Ken’s recommendations, but they don’t like UK fans on their site even posting nice comments.

But I did read an excellent post by frankpos on his hellinthehall.com site about Louisville’s hippie kicker back in the 70’s relating to the kicker that UL has now. Ii was most entertaining as I am from that era.

Lee Corso who was the Coach at the time...

His comments about this Jewish barefoot kicker are hilarious. Go read and enjoy.

by kykat51 on Sep 15, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, yes, the links…..

I totally forgot to mention all the links ASoB offers. I too just love that feature here. I do wander around the links on the right-hand side as well as the newsfeed article links and of course the Fanshot and Fanpost links that the members here post. So, I guess you could say that I do in fact "read" other blogs; I just always come to ASoB first and foremost to get access to those blogs.

Besides, I just know that if something happens and it is super- newsworthy that it will eventually get posted on ASoB, maybe not first, but eventually. Guess I’m kind of lazy also, huh? Just waiting around, letting you all do the work! ; )

by BigSkyCat on Sep 15, 2008 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

oh my,

oops — now the other blog links are actually on the LEFT-HAND side….I think they used to be on the right? : )

by BigSkyCat on Sep 15, 2008 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually most on the left where will open another page...

And one can get out easily w/o getting out of ASoB…on the right…not…have to go back to history.

I am learning my way around here…lol

by kykat51 on Sep 15, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh,

Well, I guess I was referring to the blog links — KSR, Over The Pylon, John Clay’s Blog, FireBilly (which never gets updated, btw : ), etc. as now being over on the left. Before ASoB got its snazzy new layout-upgrade those links used to be on the right-hand side of the page.

But, I do know what you mean (I think) about having to open up a new window with those links as opposed to the newsfeed articles where Tru just posts the article itself. : )

by BigSkyCat on Sep 16, 2008 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey...

Don’t get down on FireBilly…that is TFGM who is here as a contributor.

He has a family and a job and some young kids. He does what he can :-)

When he does come on he is off the wall. His comments and posts are hilarious and I love him! Just a different side to this excellent blog.

by kykat51 on Sep 16, 2008 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

HA!

I thought it was really quite obvious — what with the little smiley-face and all, but apparently not……..

The FireBilly comment was a TOTAL joke.

I am very aware (thank-you) that FGM posts there, and yes, his sense of humor and flair for sarcasm is in fact the reason I check (and the only other sports blog that I have ever commented on, btw) that site.

besides ASoB

i only read South Side Sox (White Sox) and Windy City Gridiron (Bears).

if you ever notice my icon

You know I have to give Burnt Orange Nation a plug.

If you’ve got the time, I also suggest checking out Barking Carnival, a hilarious, insightful Longhorns blog. They’re diversifying as well…they now have writers from Texas Tech, Missouri, and Georgia on their roll call.

And one more I’m surprised hasn’t gotten mention: Kissing Suzy Kolber, which is about the only thing that makes the NFL more interesting to read about than CFB.

Damn!

I left off BON, which I read all the time.

Well, I knew I’d screw it up somehow. Thanks for that, JC.

Also, I know somebody on this blog reads Kissing Suzy Kolber — I think it was The Fake Gimel Martinez — because I was referred there by somebody on here once. Good blog also. Never read Barking Carnival, but I’ll check them out now.

Just curious on my part. Do you comment here due to Gillispie coming to UK as basketball coach? I checked your icon and you are undoubtedly a Texas Longhorns fan.

I am sure all here welcome you.

by kykat51 on Sep 15, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

haha, thanks

I’m from Texas and went to UT, so Longhorn football is obviously #1 on my list. But ever since I started following college basketball (starting from the ‘99 season), I really loved rooting for Kentucky. I think it stems from my best friend loving Arizona, so I wanted to root for the “other” Wildcats. Anyways, that’s my story. I’d honestly have a really hard time rooting for Kentucky over Texas, or vice versa, if the two ever played each other in CBB. I believe it recently almost happened (was it the CvC Classic?), but Kentucky got bounced from the pre-season tourney early. My memory is hazy.

But yeah, regarding Gillispie, he’s a hell of a coach, and I’m glad Kentucky pried him over Rick Barnes from the state of Texas. We’re all glad that the Aggies can now properly return to mediocrity under Mark “Ethan from Lost” Turgeon.

also wanted to mention

That this blog is nothing short of spectacular. In true reciprocity, I make mention of it whenever I can over at BON.

by jc25 on Sep 16, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I can relate to this

Since moving to Clemson 5 years ago, I have become a big Tigers fan, especially in basketball. Originally, I didn’t think I would ever have a problem rooting for UK over CU in a hypothetical basketball matchup, but that’s become much more difficult the last year or so as I have watched Oliver Purnell resurrect this program from the basement. I still would root for UK, but I would just as soon them not ever play each other and spare me the trouble of choosing.

Well, I kind of expected that ;-)

In my defense, there is a lot to like about Clemson’s team. Oliver Purnell is a great coach and an even better person. The team has a bunch of likable guys who play hard and play a brand of basketball that is fun to watch.

I think any fan of college basketball who witnessed the resurgence of the program the last 5 years would find it hard not to root for them.

That's ok JL...

I personally have never lived anywhere but Ky all my years and with what my Dad instilled in me as a youngster I could never go against my Cats. He never went to UK nor did any of 7 children, but his great UK spirit inspired me and my siblings.

Thank you, davw!

Every time I hear “Oliver Purnell” mentioned I totally crack up. I wondered if I was the only one who would never be able to hear that name without automatically thinking Old Folk’s Country Sausage—it’s gooooood.

I have such a fondness for those ads not only because of their obvious so-bad-it’s-good awesomeness, but also because they remind me so strongly of watching or listening to a UK basketball game on the BIg Blue Sports Network—that’s the only time I ever hear them.

Yeah

Hearing his name makes me laugh too. I hate those commercials but they are funny becasue they are so bad. Its gooooood sticks in my head every time I hear it so I guess it’s effective advertising.
