Auburn upperclassmen apparently beat up freshman safety DeRon Furr in practice, who was supposedly angry for being moved from quarterback. Furr has left the team and said he will transfer.

This is a weird story, and a little disconcerting. Coaches should not stand by and allow a player to be attacked by a group like that. Word is that Tubberville has been very testy about this. Something may be amiss other than what we are hearing. Auburn fans in the know are encouraged to comment.

Is Auburn noted for this?

Fellow players beating on a freshman?

I have a very difficult time imagining this happening at UK. Am I just so very naive about these college football players?

I've never ...

... heard of something like this in modern times. Back in the 1950’s, you would see this occasionally, but in the 2000’s with our litigious society, hardly ever.

Furr

I cannot believe this hast received more information. A poster at KSR mentioned that Furr signed on as a QB was told he was going to be playing QB and then on the first day he reported was told that he was to report to the DB’s. Apparently he told the OC he was a liar for telling him he would play as a QB refused to report and one of the assistant coaches made a comment that he needed to be roughed up to be taught a lesson. After hearing this the rest of the db’s jumped the kid. I havent seen this in print and am just relaying a comment someone made.

Classless

Chris Todd, former E-Town and Texas Tech QB, is at Auburn.

Over the years I’ve heard and read some strange things involving Tuberville. Of course lying to a recruit to get him on campus isn’t original; see Mike Bush at UL.

Allowing any player to be beat down is bordering on criminal in my book.

I am sorry...

But in my older mind…I see this as criminal to say the least.

Why do that beat down thing on a freshman? What are they trying to prove? Geez!

The opinions and the story don't match

So there was a fight. Thats not that unusual. Did the coachs insight it, there is no evidance of that in the article. Did they let it go on too long, maybe but now your starting to split hairs. And then this…

“Furr enrolled at Auburn in January and participated in spring practice at quarterback. He never advanced past fourth string, however, and asked to move to secondary at the beginning of the summer seeking a more promising opportunity to play.”

Something doesn’t add up. Either the newspaper article is inaccurate or you simply got a fight during practice. Again, not that unusual and definatly not criminal.

Wait ...

... the part about the older players piling on before the coaches stopped it makes my wonder. Some accounts have them looking on, but none of them suggests they reacted swiftly to stop the fight.

Scuffles in practice are nothing new. Several upperclassmen ganging up to beat down a freshman is definitely extraordinary.
