Kentucky at Louisville: Open Game Thread
Kentucky Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals, Aug 31, 2008 3:30 PM EDT
This is the official A Sea of Blue Open Game thread for the Kentucky vs. Louisville game today at 3:30 PM. For more on the game, visit the UK Athletics site and click on the various links for notes, Gametracker, etc. I am opening the thread a bit early in order to allow people to have some pre-game "tailgate talk." Comments will automatically update, so there is no longer a need to refresh the screen.
Today's game is huge on many levels, and even though it looms more important for Steve Kragthorpe than any other single person, Rich Brooks has a lot invested as well, especially after having declared the defense the best of his tenure.
Keys to the game
Kentucky wins if:
- The D-line consistently gets to Cantwell;
- The defensive backfield dominates the Louisville receivers;
- The Kentucky backs perform at a high level
- Mike Hartline is cool, calm, and collected;
- Kentucky wins the turnover battle.
Louisville wins if:
- They protect Cantwell;
- The Louisville receivers catch the ball;
- The Louisville defense is able to shut down the Kentucky running game;
- They perform well on special teams;
- They turn Kentucky over three or more times.
That's the way I see it. Gametime shortly, post your comments below.

Masthay ...
… for his first touchback of the new season.

Wide receivers ...
… not keeping their block on the outside. Arrrgghh.

Run
We gotta run it better than we are.
Not a bad first series though. Completed passes have to help Hartline’s confidence.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
Our interior line ...
… is just not getting it done.

Thanks. I don’t get cable, so it didn’t matter much, but I was curious anyhow.

If his receivers ...
… could hold the ball, I would say outstanding. Showed good poise near the goal line throwing the ball out of bounds when his protection broke down.

He has ...
… a very nice touch on shorter passes. No verticals yet, though.

QB
Deep ball has been shaky but the screen passes are going pretty well.
Young receivers have dropped a couple of very catchable passes.
Run game is sucking so far. I dont like the plays called for the run and dont think the o line is blocking for the runners very much,

We need ...
… to run more plays on the edges. The O-line inside the tackles are not getting it done.

AARGGHH...
… Sieber can’t connect. We have got to establish a running game, but Louisville is putting eight in the box. They know Hartline is inaccurate deep, and they are making us pay.

Pretty much ...
… what I expected — a defensive struggle.
I like a defensive struggle from a UK standpoint. Our defense has been utterly excellent.

Play clock...
Ive NEVER understood how the play clock can get away from you. I know its a new rule, i know its a new QB, but my goah, it happened last year and it happened now…nice pass on the next play but guess what, were 4 yrds short..but for that miscue!! aghhhhhh !!
GO CATS!!
scoring
I’m a hoops kinda girl, so I don’t pretend to understand the fine points of football, but would it be safe to say that the only points louisville has scored today were scored for them by kentucky?
Myron Pryor!
72 yards. Speed? Well, just enough.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
LOL
Pryor’s 72 yd run was awesome.
SWEET VALIDATION!!!
I thought that we were clearly superior to UofL at every position but QB but didnt want to stick a foot in my mouth because we are Kentucky. Its great to see a W to start the season.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
Back to back ...
… for the first time in 10 years.
Great victory. Defense is simply amazing.
Postmortem coming soon.

Wow
That actually does look like a defense that belongs in the SEC!
waiting on a new banner being raised into the rafters of Rupp..........
Nice job Cats!
Way to protect SEC pride, and also do it against a bitter OOC rival! CONGRATULATIONS and enjoy the win!

Excellent
VERY nice win. Our defense is fantastic! But our O-line was absolutely terrible – let’s get this fixed over the next 3 weeks.

Sorry Tru...
Did not see this live thread. Anyway a great win by our defensive line.
Oh…I am so thrilled with this win!!!!
Seriously....
You are so right Gator……Worried SEC QB’s will pick us apart unless our secondary is on ALL day long!
I'm confused after the game
I honestly don’t know if our defense is that good; or if UofL’s offense is just that bad.
I’ll be watching the Cards closely over the next few weeks to see if I can’t get a measure of what our defense really accomplished today.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Okay Tru:
Based on your analysis UK won because of 5 (TO battle) 4 ( although unspectacular, Hartline played with poise) 1 ( D-Line put enough pressure on Can’t Throw Well) 2 (Jones? was picked on all day long and Lindley was everywhere) 3 ( well we know how the backs performed, although it looked like Locke was getting better each carry)
So, the defense carried us to victory while the offense was patient although not dominant. It being the first game I am not too worried bout the kinks on defense. Few “puff” games to work them out. The offense will have to step up if we are to win a game in the SEC. Obvious I know, but I believe Coach Phillips will rectify that. It was nice to see Hartline not crumble or throw any interceptions. The safety was a mistake but I’ll take that in the first game, even with it being such a big rivalry and all.
Great win for continued recruiting bragging rights in-state!!!!!
GO BIG BLUE!!!!!
I think ...
… that’s right, although I believe Ken’s analysis was better. And I do agree that if in these next few games, Kentucky’s offense develops well, we are right there for a good season.
Hartline was very poised. His arm is not that strong, but his poise and intelligence make up for that somewhat. But he does need to learn to throw the ball down the field.

Ken's analysis ...
… was better than mine, that is. :-)

Ken has done an
excellent job!! I noted on another thread that his breakdown of the UK squad was better than any preseason mag, online site or any other publication dealing with college football. He is an invaluable asset to this site which continues to be my HOME for UK news, commentary and insight.
I think Tru saw that in the many posts and comments...
That Ken made since his joining this blog.
Ken has been an invaluable asset to this site before and after he was brought in as an author IMO.
I commend Tru for an excellent decision in bringing Ken onboard!
I am truly excited about football as well as basketball.
