Lone returning IU scholarship player out 10 weeks
Honestly, the NCAA might as well have given this program the death penalty. Its probably one of the saddest conclusions to a relatively minor recruiting violation that I've ever seen. As a Kentucky fan, I certainly have no love for IU... but I really do feel bad for the school and their fans. Hiring Sampson was a mistake easy to see for almost everyone (except the AD and the president obviously) but I never expected this to be the results.
Kentucky's violations in the 80's were far more egregious and the imposed penalties much more severe, but we didn't have the complete and total collapse of everything that was already in place the way IU is experiencing.

I'm Purdue Alum
So I don’t share your empathy (or sympathy) for IU basketball.
IU knew what it was doing by hiring Kelvin Sampson.
They made their own bed, now they must sleep in it.

Also
The UK penalties in 1989 were really for a whole series of activities going back to the mid 1970’s.

Sampson
I think no one was surprised when they saw the violations for phone calls. Discovering what a total and complete mess the team and the program as a whole had become did surprise at least me.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Like you, I have no love for IU, but it's terrible what has happened up there ...
… especially to the players.

The players exactly...
That is what matters.
Where is Sampson? And the ones that were over him? It is sad, but the higher administration knew about Sampson…so I blame them.
