There Are 2 Or 3 Tough OOC Games

UNC, West Virginia,, and Louisville. The rest are W or should be.

The SEC is down this year so 12 W should be minimum. UK won 12 last year with an injured roster most of the season.

And SECT should yield 2 or 3 more W in March. If the SEC is down, so is SECT.

Miami

will also have a very good team this year.

Still not a crook!

We will lose to Miami, Kansas State, and West Virginia (if we play them). 11-4 at best Non-Conf.

I can’t see us beating a Miami squad that beat Duke, Clemson, BC, and Virginia Tech last year en route to finishing well above us in both my (Pomeroy) ratings and the RPI. They also beat Mississippi State in Mississippi, if that tells you anything. A very solid ball club with a very good coach.

Kansas State had a top twenty Pomeroy rating last year, and was top fifty in the RPI as well (above us, by the way). Also, both their offense and their defense were ranked in the top 25 in efficiency, whereas our rankings were 81st and 44th, respectively. The game comes early in the season for us, and I don’t see us having the edge in this one. Wild Card: they lost their great coach to West Virginia, so they may have a little adjusting of their own to do.

If we have to play West Virginia instead of Iowa, we will likely pick up another L. They were top twenty in both RPI and Pomeroy last year (11-7 in the Big East), and finished in the Sweet Sixteen. They beat Duke, Pittsburgh, Arizona, and UConn. Oh, and did I mention that they just picked up one hell of a good coach from Kansas State?

Sadly, I also concur that what I will see in Chapel Hill is a good, old-fashioned butt kicking, with us on the wrong side of the boot. The Cardinals should be able to handle us as well, alas.

Is everyone writing off the IU game as a complete joke? I fear taking it lightly. See App. State vs. Michigan, last year on the gridiron. And oh, yeah—we play App. State this year in basketball. I wonder whether we are completely free of the Gardner-Webb curse, and can eliminate any surprises within the “Can’t Lose” category of schools..

Barring any surprises, we are probably at 11-4 going into conference play. Write it down. I would be ecstatic at 12-3.

With respect to the SEC schedule, I see the Alabama and Arkansas games both being iffy for us, and Florida and Tennessee might sweep us, looking at their recruiting classes and their returning rosters. We split with the Mississippi schools, split with Vandy, and suddenly we have to win every other game left on the schedule just to stay at 8-8 in the conference. Not a rosy scenario. I would be happy with 10-6, and I think it’s more realistic.

I wish I could be as optimistic as y’all, but I conservatively but realistically see us at or very near 21-10 going into the conference tourney.

If we add in the BCG second year factor (he’s always exceeded expectations in the second year at a new school), I could rationalize us perhaps being as good as 12-3 Non Conf., and 12-4 in Conf., for a rosy scenario of 24-7 going into the post season. I do think that is, however, looking at the schedule through rose-colored glasses.

But danged if that’s not what I’m wearing today!

K-St Lost Walker And Beasley

No way are they anywhere NEAR as good as last year. I know several of their coaches. No way.

West Virginia will be a tough game (if UK plays them).

13-2, 12-4, 2-1 or 3-0. That is (1) if eligible and (2) healthy.

by FortyYearCatFan on Aug 2, 2008 10:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Hope so. VMI led nation in scoring, steals, and 3's last year, with top scorer both years.

I wonder whether that is why they are scheduled just before the Chapel Hill game? But they were a one man show as far as accuracy, and Williams is now gone.

I saw one game where he went 19 of 22, and the rest of the team shot like 30%.

They will still play extreme up-tempo, make about 14 steals a game, and take a bunch of shots, including 3’s. That will be a fun game. Lots of rebounds!

by Ken Pomeroy on Aug 2, 2008 10:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It will be tough ...

... for us to win in Chapel Hill or in Louisville. I think we might be able to handle Miami and either West Virgina or Iowa. West Virginia lost their main weapon, and we matched up pretty good with him anyway.

How can Arkansas be “iffy?” Pelphrey lost his whole team to graduation. Alabama, I agree with—they have a lot of talent. Unfortunately, Gottfrey can’t coach a lick, so I still like our chances. Florida won’t sweep us, and neither will Tennessee. Florida is still too young, and has only freshmen to match up with our front line. Calathes will be tough as always, and look for Parsons and Tyus to improve, but these guys are all just sophomores. Teams as young as Florida are almost always schizophrenic, just as they were last year.

Tennessee will be very tough, but we have a habit of beating them when they are good, so I’ll defer to the basketball gods on that one. Their backcourt will be significantly younger this year than last, and they will be much less athletic in the front court with freshmen depth all over the place. I like our chances to take at least one from Tennessee.

Barring injury, I would say the best range would be between 22 and 26 wins pre-tournament. North Carolina and Louisville look like the only two really likely L’s. Figure on one more OOC loss and 3-5 conference losses barring injury.

Worst Case

12-3 (OOC) and 11-5 (SEC) for 23-8 going into SECT.

UK replaced Crawford, Bradley, Jasper, and Williams with MIller, Liggins, Galloway, and Harrellson. And Meeks and Patterson are back (healthy).

Alabama

Alabama could have five all star NBA players on their team and we would still win. Absolutely no coach in America does less with more talent than Gottfried.

... that it’s a minor miracle that Gottfried still has a job. You hit the nail on the head.

by Ken Howlett on Aug 3, 2008 2:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes,

that would indeed be incredibly lovely! ; )

Seeing as how it just now August (and although my crystal ball is quite powerful, it’s not quite THAT good and refuses to give me any real solid info on our upcoming season right now—that’s a total joke, btw) I feel a bit silly making any kind of predictions on our 08/09 season record. But, I will say that I would be extremely happy (elated actually) if we were to just get more W’s than UNC this season. (Oh yeah, and of course I would really prefer to make it into the NCAA tournament quite easily this year, that would be much appreciated also.)

What is the difference in total wins between us and UNC now, like 16?? (I know we went over this at the end of last season, but my mind is totally in summer mode at the moment).......Yikes! That’s pretty damn close.

Gillispie 2nd Year

6 W then 24 at UTEP. 21 W then 22 at TAMU.

Average increase of 9 W in his 2nd year at a school.

Wins/Losses

I have 24-7 in regulare season play only. This doesnt include the SEC or NCAA tourney’s

3l’s out of conference although I think that we could get by with only 2 losses.

4l’s in conference. Split with Vandy and UT and UF and one other loss possibly to Miss St.

25-6 Going Into SECT

13-2 (OOC) and 12-4 (SEC) plus 2 or 3 W in SECT = 27-7 or 28-6 W on Selection Sunday.

Presuming all are eligible and remain healthy.

by FortyYearCatFan on Aug 2, 2008 3:58 PM EDT   0 recs

OOC

is incredibly weak this year. Sure we have 3-4 tough games, but that’s it. Longwood, Delaware St, Lamar, FAU, App. St, Miss Valley St, VMI, Tenn St. I’ve never seen more cupcakes in my life!!

I just dred to hear what other fans are going to say about this. Let’s just hope we don’t have the trouble with some of them that we did this year…

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Aug 2, 2008 5:36 PM EDT   0 recs

Not Weak

Just lots of wiinable OOC games.

That’s how Coach G scheduled at UTEP and TAMU. 2 or 3 tough games and 10 or 12 others.

by FortyYearCatFan on Aug 2, 2008 10:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Weak Schedule

Wouldn’t have games against UNC, Louisville (etc).

Teams like UConn and Georgetown play weak OOC schedules.

by FortyYearCatFan on Aug 3, 2008 7:25 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No, not weak

Call me crazy, but I prefer to think of it as ultra-clever scheduling. I wouldn’t think that Coach Gillispie could have had the dramatic turnarounds he has without a little clever scheduling combined with his coaching/recruiting. If you win more games, you are able to recruit better players. If you have better players you can actually win the games against tougher competition. It will all work out just fine this season; I really don’t think there will be any complete and total game meltdowns like last year. Maybe the strength of schedule isn’t the highest this year, but the hard ass mentality that BCG is instilling in the boys in practice will hopefully prepare them for any competition they face……strong or weak. : )

by BigSkyCat on Aug 3, 2008 3:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Forty ...

... alluded to this fact earlier, that Gillispie traditionally keeps the OOC schedule a bit tame in the second year. But anytime you have to play Louisville at Louisville, UNC at Chapel Hill, Miami and Kansas State, the schedule is plenty strong enough.

Nothing Wrong With This Schedule

UK needs 25+ W this season. This schedule gives a fair chance to do that.

by FortyYearCatFan on Aug 3, 2008 9:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Getting blown out by UNC won't help us recruit against them.

We need the cupcakes early to build chemistry, but we need more mid-level tests before we enter SEC play. Scratch App. St and Lamar for weak, big name schools. That will improve the RPI and give the guys a little better measuring stick.

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Aug 5, 2008 12:42 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think ...

... the idea that we will get “blown out” by UNC presumes and awful lot of negatives. Let’s not surrender before we get on the court. :-)

Sorry. You're right, I was in a bit of a bad mood when I posted that.

We’re gonna give the baby blues a swift kick in the rear. Patterson is going to OWN last year’s POY and their guards will be too busy jacking up shots in an attempt to make the league that UK wins by 15!

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Aug 5, 2008 11:19 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

UK loses 1

out of conference and unfortunately it’s to Loserville. The SEC we go undefeated. Then it’s on to SECT Champions and Final Four participants who lose out to a determined UNC team that didn’t quit thinking about that butt-whooping UK gave em in November.

GO BIG BLUE!!!

by bluecrip on Aug 2, 2008 7:44 PM EDT   0 recs

It will ...

... certainly take a lot. But we are due to pull a big upset over an OOC opponent, and I would love to see that against either UNC or Louisville this year.

How about "fervent prayer" or "catastrophic injury" to the other team?

You know, whenever I ‘m asked who I pull for when Duke plays North Carolina, I say, “Injuries.” I hope I’m kidding, but then, sometimes I wonder.

by Ken Pomeroy on Aug 3, 2008 9:04 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

catastrophic injury

Im down with fervent prayer but I want to beat these teams with their best players on the court.
