PGA Golf Tournament/Olympics Open Thread

Btn_chat_medium

Use this thread to comment on the PGA golf tournament (which former Wildcat J.B. Holmes led overnight) or the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The latest on the PGA tournament can be found here.  As of this writing, Ben Curtis and Henrik Stenson have taken the lead at -3.  Holmes is currently at -1.  After yesterday was delayed by rain, we should see some much lower scoring, particularly in the early part of the day, as the greens are now rain-softened and receptive to shots.  When they were hard and fast earlier, the course was a bear, but it has been de-clawed to some extent by all the precipitation.

China and the USA are playing in basketball right now.  That means Yao Ming and Tayshaun Prince.

Comment away.

The USA wins 101-70 over China.

US Men....

may not be as good as advertised. Of course they should be the favorite but I have some doubt.

Wow

USA was so dominant in the 2nd half.

JB

Hope he didn’t lose his momentum yesterday with the wait all day. Maybe he’ll play better this afternoon.

Man ...

... LeBron James is just really an amazing player. Dwayne Wade is too.

I have to admit, this may be the best US team ever to play in the Olympics. The rest of the world has made incredible progress in basketball, and it really is pleasing to see how China has embraced the sport.

Best US Olympic Teams

1992 = best pro team.

1960 = best amateur team.

That was horrid...

very bad decision on that lie. Just awful. May not have a chance now with so many others playing so well.

On the Olympics

"The Americans? We’re going to smash them. That’s what we came for."

—Alain Bernard,

Bernard was the WR holder in 100m freestyle and had promised that his French relay team would beat the Americans in the 4X100 freestyle. As Bob Costas said: au contraire. American Jason Lezak chased down the well ahead Bernard in the last 50 m of fourth leg to give the Americans the narrow victory (by 0.08 seconds.)

I hope a lot of people got to see that race because it was the epitome of Olympic pride and American perseverance. U-S-A! U-S-A!

Two months (!). Two weeks. Two pencils.

Heh ...

... I wonder if they can cook crow fricassee? Because they are gonna be munching on some, that’s for sure.

I was up last night watching that

As a former competitive swimmer (obviously nowhere near Olympic level) I sat there stunned as Lezak closed the gap. It was truly amazing. To come up that big, on that stage, with that competition (the world record holder in the 100 Free) was truly a thing of beauty to watch.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Lezak ...

... just intimidated the Frenchman with his charge, and the French guy just locked up. His stroke count went up, but his speed went down. Lezak just would not be denied.

I’ll bet the French learned something about giving the opponent locker-room material. It’s always foolish to motivate your opponent in any sport.

Faced with adversity the french guy locked up, what a surprise.

The French

I am reminded of the scene in Monty Python where the French knight yells down “Go away… or I shall be forced to taunt you a second time!”

That’s about all that’s left of what the French swimmers can do now!

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

amazing race

i kept watching just for that race and it didn’t disappoint. they killed that world record too. they said lezak swam his 100 meters in 46 seconds flat, the fastest relay split ever. even better is he was matched up with bernard, who was quiet after it was over.

GO BIG BLUE!! GO BIG BLUE!!
