Mark Coury gone?
I've gotten wind of Mark Coury's release from the basketball team with basically a "best of wishes" type of statement.
I love the kid as much as the next and i know he's very intelligent and what not, but he isn't exactly a basketball star and he caused me a lot of frusteration this season.
Any truth to this?? If so, anyone got any clue as to what the ramifications were?
I'll check tomorrow at work but I'm tired as crap so I wanted to see if maybe you guys could dig something up.

Gillispie Said (In Recent Press Conference)
Coury was given a release so he could pursue a scholarship at another school.
But he would be welcomed back at UK (as a walk-on) too.
I think Coury will go somewhere else.

I'd be surprised ...
... if nobody offered him a scholarship, but he may just wind up here again next year.
He is looking for a mix of academics and athletics, and he may just find that settling isn’t in his best interests.

Good luck ...
...Seems like a serious student and a good kid. Wish him well.
Never having to watch him blow layups in the first 7 minutes he played ever again would make my heart warm. Just the truth.

Seems to me
With his size, he could have a very very good basketball career at a D2 or D3 school somewhere, and one that would likely have very good academics. Who knows – maybe the lesser competition would allow him to develop, and he ends up having a stellar Euro pro-career. . .

Coury
Sorry but Coury’s never playing pro ball on any level unless he plays for Eastern Kentucky Miners.

Oh, I don't know....
He came to UK and obviously busted his hump while here. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have gotten any minutes on the hardwood. Personally, I hope he is able to land somewhere where he’s able to develop and gets a chance to play pro ball on some level some where. He’s earned the opportunity and I wish him only the very best.

Coury
I love Coury and he certainly has worked extremely hard and I would like to see him at UK but Im telling you the kids just not gifted enough to play pro ball nor do I think he has any intentions to. He seems very focused on his academics and aware of the fact that his future career is not as a professional basketball player.

I want to see him stay...
I saw a marked improvement in his game last year. I think it was because of the change in his attitude in the game, more forceful and positive. Confidence!! This I think was due to BCG. Which ever decision Mark makes I wish him well and belive he will do well.

I would ...
... like to see him stay as well. He can help, in certain situations, and I think he will improve some. No, he is never going to grace NBA arenas, but the guy knows where to be on defense and does what he is supposed to do. Having guys like that on your team is always valuable, especially in practice.
Plus, I just love his grit. I have a soft spot for gritty guys that lack talent.

Coury...
has all those intangibles that fans love (grit, toughness, hustle etc.) but he is not a good SEC baskeball player. This is positive news because I would assume it would open up a scholarship to someone that can actually make UK better on the floor with his production. Sure he is a good kid and everything but I would rather have ballers. He is one of those players that every once and awhile would have a good game but normally he just used up minutes to spell other players because UK was thin with healthy bodies. Of course I wish him well – no ill will.

If I'm not mistaken
We had an unused scholly last year, so it was given to Coury for that year alone (instead of just letting it go unused.) He would have gone back to walk-on status if we’d needed it next year.

Nope.
He was a walk on last year. He was on scholarship one semester under Smith, but no longer. There is a complicated reason, but he wasn’t a scholarship player, and his leaving (or staying) would have no impact whatever on scholarships.

Confirmed.
Mark Coury is absent from the official roster that was posted.
He has gone to “pursue playing elsewhere”

Coury
Coury was a great kid and a walk on to boot and will be missed from the team. I understand your feelin if he was a scholarship player taking up a scholarship at a major D1 school but he was a walk on contributing to the team in any way he could. It was not his fault we had no depth in front of him. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Coury
Not his fault that Gillispie chose to start him over Stevenson.
Good kid, excellent student, good competitor, and (as stated above) a walk-on!

I'll miss Coury ...
… Even though he wasn’t talented, he never took a play off. We need people like that in the program, but it’s not a good thing when we are forced to start them or play them serious minutes.

Gillisipe CHOSE To Start Him
Stevenson SHOULD have started. And Stewart SHOULD have seen more PT.
Coury SHOULD have been 5-10 minutes PT.

ashamed of myself? I was ashamed of the fact the guy couldn’t make a layup and he was playing on the greatest basketball program in the nation. Why can’t I be happy that he is gone? I’m not saying I wouldn’t go fishing with the guy…but his being a good kid and all that…and his skill on the court are two completely different things and no matter how he is in the former, his performance in the latter was just awful and there is no denying that. It is for the best he moved on and thats that.

I love those Geico commercials…
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Coury
http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/Players/Coury_Mark.html His stats show he played 10 minutes PT and scored 2 ppg.
Hardly great but not awful.
