Gillispie close to signing formal contract with UK
Isn't it amazing how this dropped completely off the radar screen?
I guess people would rather talk about young recruiting. Unless, of course, the subject is anyone but Gillispie.

Would it be safe to assume...
that on a national level UK and BCG gets raked over the coals for not having a contract signed all last year but it barely (if at all) creates a ripple when he does sign one.
We'll have to wait ...
... and see, I guess.
But it would surprise me not at all. :-)
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
What about Golden Boy?
Didn’t I hear that “the Lesser Billy” hadn’t signed his contract down in the swamp either? Wouldn’t it be strange if Billy G signed his first?
Oh Bay-Bee!
“Mr. Donovan holding out is perfect play. He should get the love he is due BAY-Bee!
In other news, things are a bit too blue in Kentucky. Billy G finally signed a contract at Kentucky. The drawn out deal can’t mean all is smooth for Tubby’s replacement.
Speaking of Tubby, he once bought a car from a guy who has a 6th grade son who can ball. Because he knew him already, it is a win win that he signed him. ( Although it is bad for the game.)”
Changing how you think will change what you think.
Your Last Paragraph Is Absurd
The NABC is not one and the same as Tubby Smith.

LOL
Forty, I actually had a disclaimer typed but thought it would not be needed. And pulled it. As Ben Franklin once said in one of his humorist pieces “Comedy is like a frog, when you dissect it, it looses it’s meaning.”
It was 150% shot at Vital. He will never get over the “situation” of Tubby/UK/BCG
We know he is in love with Billy D, Tubby, K, and Rick.
I would NEVER expect Tubby to ever go near any line set by his own heart, administration or NABC. I strung it as it would be by Vital: Billy-D to BCG/UK to Tubby and Tubby happens to be the Pres.
As soon as you can laugh about Tubby you will feel MUCH better.
Changing how you think will change what you think.
Y Laugh About Tubby?
Even more absurd than the other comments.
Tubby has been scouting and recruiting freshmen and sophomores at Minnesota. He offered several of them but has declined to accept any commitments yet. He leads (and will likely get) many of the top Minnesota players in 2010 and 2011 classes eventually.

Dude
Not his performance. No one is questioning that here. Just laugh about a joke that happens to involve him and is not explicitly about him.
I think wilson452 is trying to say “Lighten up!” Any time Tubby gets mentioned in any context around here, it seems like you go into full defensive mode. We like the guy. We really do. He’s had really good stats everywhere he’s been. He’s a genuinely nice guy. That doesn’t mean we can’t laugh about something tangentially connected to him, especially when the butt of the joke is Dick Vitale.
No Joke
Vitale is right (early HS commitments are not good) but misspoke on Rivers-2-Fla.
More often than not, early commitments don’t pan out. The player changes his mind, or ultimately transfers elsewhere.
by FortyYearCatFan on Jul 18, 2008 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions
vitale is right?
how’s that? because you two have the same opinion? you say it like it’s a fact…you think vitale is right.

I'm confused..
why would a coach bother to "offer" several freshmen and sophomores but “decline to accept” their commitments? That makes absolutely no sense to me.
Oh yeah, and about this: "He leads (and will likely get) many of the top Minnesota players in 2010 and 2011 classes eventually"– seems like you are willing to give Tubby some time there…….Sounds a bit like a double-standard to me. What’s good for one coach (whom you quite obviously respect) should be good for the other (who is currently coaching the team you are a fan of), right? Doesn’t BCG deserve the same grace period that you are apparently giving Tubby as far as recruiting top-rated talent? And considering that Coach Gillispie has been a head coach for 6 years and Tubby 17 years, IMO, BCG should get an even greater amount of time to prove himself.
Honestly, for me, sometimes it’s hard to tell if you are a UK fan or just a Tubby fan.
One point to add
Isn’t getting the top Minnesota players kind of like dating the prettiest girl at the county fair in a small county far in the Appalaichan Mountains?
;-)
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
HA! HA!
Very cute and funny!! Good point.
Yes, I wouldn’t exactly consider the Minnesota pool that Tubby is reportedly (by Forty) recruiting from these days to even begin to compare with the scouring-the-ends-of-the-earth for talent that Billy Clyde is after! Only the players stars (oh, and not their astrological stars either, btw) will tell us who is better, isn’t that right? : )
Minnesota Vs Kentucky HS Players
http://statsheet.com/bhsb/recruits_by_state Top 100, Top 50, Top 10. Minnesota > Kentucky in each category.
http://statsheet.com/bhsb/mcplayers_by_state McDonalds A-A only. Since 1990, Minnesota tied with Kentucky.

Thanks for that...
and the time it probably took to get that info. But, clearly, we just have a miscommunication here…..
I wasn’t trying to compare the talent from Minnesota and Kentucky, but rather the talent from Minnesota that you implied Tubby was recruiting from, and the talent from every state BCG is obviously recruiting.
I apparently took you far too literally (in your initial comments) and then you took me literally right back. : )
Minnesota
Also recruiting talent nationwide. Signed Canada POY. Signed JuCo POY. Signed well regarded big men from GA and SD.
Minnesota HS talent is very good, better than Kentucky recently.

I doubt that.
Kentucky HS basketball, after being “dormant” since the mid-90’s ( as it pretains to producing D1 talent ) has hit a “good cycle” of late.
Check out the number of D1 players Kentucky has produced over the last 2-3 years.
Warning!
Incoming overly elaborate and useless statistic incoming!
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
LOL!
I suppose I could scour the rosters of every D1 team for Minnesota natives, but I have to have my wisdom teeth taken out, which will be much more enjoyable.
My point is that KY HS basketball has experienced a revival of sorts, not how good or bad MN HS basketball is.
Dave Winfield
Minnesota native Winfield is still, I believe, the only person ever drafted by four professional leagues: MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA.
Just some Minny related, useless trivia for those that crave such info.
Minnesota stats
Ken, I never thought that you would be the one to provide the meaningless and overly elaborate stat.

Actually Not So
Kansas had the top Minnesota HS player (from 2007) in their playing rotation in 2008.
You show your lack of knowledge of HS basketball – the state of Minnesota produces some very good HS talent. Better than Kentucky in recent years.

Disappointing to me also
I will tell you one of the most shocking things I ever witnessed on mid-western television though… when I was in chiropractic school in Iowa, a few of us would get together occaisionally to watch Law and Order. We particularly liked it when we went to our friend Chris’ place because his fiance was a great cook. We got over there, ate, then sat down to hang out and watch TV… we put it on the local NBC affiliate… and they were showing a tape delay of the high school state wrestling tournament! Those mid-west people just aren’t right in the head.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Indeed
One might think such an expert would have a wider range of knowledge.
One would be wrong.

That actually made me...

Chad Calcaterra (Example)
He was offered a scholarship last summer (as a rising sophomore). He wants to attend Minnesota. But there is no formal commitment (yet). I think he’ll commit this fall (as HS junior).
Minnesota HS players have long been inclined to attend the U of Minn. It’s the only Div I school in the state.

Wait a second
I could’ve sworn I heard something about Donovan signing a contract…. something about the Magic….
I wilson452
will never joke on this board again. At least I will avoid including the letters T – U – B – B – Y in the joke.
And yes, that was a joke.
Changing how you think will change what you think.
The NABC instituted that absurd suggestion...
with Tubby at the helm…as we have seen lately…it is uninforceable.
Coaches will continue what they do to stay ahead.
It doesn't matter ...
... who is at the helm. The NABC has no power of enforcement.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

No
Yours. The NABC “position” was not established by Tubby Smith. Period.
by FortyYearCatFan on Jul 18, 2008 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I've been president of organizations before
No matter how ceremonial… I always had input.
You are correct, it was NOT Tubby’s decision. But to act like the man has absolutely no responsibilities or requirements placed on him by his position and it is entirely just a ceremonial title to pad his resume is naive at best.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

... I had to remove your cut and paste. Sorry, but that was way too much to be considered fair use, and it was from a protected site (ESPN insider) which makes it even more problematic. l’m not upset or anything, but I am on the hook for copyright violations, so I do try to police them closely. If you had written permission for republication from ESPN, send me a copy of that authorization and repost it if you like with my apologies.
*——-Fair use/Copyright issues reminder--—-
This is just a reminder to everyone. We have to be very judicious about cut and paste from copyrighted content without permission. SBNation is a for-profit enterprise, and as part of that enterprise, A Sea of Blue has to be very careful about possible infringement issues.
Generally, the rule is to post the minimum necessary from other content to make your point. My rule of thumb is no more than a couple of paragraphs, but the legal system has no such guidance—even one sentence may be deemed too much, but in general, we should try to quote as little as possible and summarize the rest. Also, we should link to the source, even if the source is behind a subscription. Quoting an entire article or the majority of one is almost never fair use.

I still like Tubby...
...but I am liking Tubby discussion less and less all the time. It. was. a. JOKE!!!!! And the joke (which was funny, btw) wasn’t even about him, Dick Vitale was the butt of it. There was no slight at all to Coach Smith—unless it is somehow offensive to even speak (type) his name. I’m truly astounded that anyone could work so hard to find something there to get their panties in a bunch about.

That's just it
who really cares about Tubby? He is gone.Like some weak and needy wussbag talking about the EX.GET OVER IT.Hell,I wish Sea of Blue was a Tubby-free zone,LOL.
Never happen ...
... Smith is part of us. He also is one of four coaches who won national championships at Kentucky. We can never ignore or forget that, or the great work he did here.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
I Think Many Do Ignore/Forget Those Things
Tubby Smith will forever be remembered as 22-13 or 22-12 coach. Not 219-58 coach the prior 8 seasons.
Many would say Pitino won the 1998 title. In fact, most say that.
by FortyYearCatFan on Jul 19, 2008 9:39 AM EDT reply actions
Tubby and Joe Hall
I think a lot of comparisons will be made between the two. Both replaced very popular coaches. Both did a good job for the school. Both were derided on their way out the door.
Flash forward 20 years from when Hall left, and he is seen as a beloved figure in the state. Tubby will be the same way in 2028.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Hold up
I dont hear most say that.
In fact I dont think Pitino would have won the 98 title if he were the coach of the 98 team.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
I Don't Either BUT
Many (I daresay MOST) think the 98 title belongs to Pitino.
by FortyYearCatFan on Jul 19, 2008 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions
Tubby Or Hall
Hall made 1975 FF in part because Scott May (key IU player) was injured and ineffective (but did play vs UK).
Tubby missed 2003 FF in part because Keith Bogans was injured and ineffective (but did play vs Marquette).
Hall made 1984 FF with narrow W over Illinois on Rupp Arena (home) court.
Tubby missed 2005 FF with narrow L in 2OT to Michigan State.
Few will even remember Tubby Smith in 2028. He will be a beloved figure in Minnesota for his achievements there over the next decade.

OMG
You are such a grumpy old man….... the cats are back….accept it or to take some viagra…......I haven’t seen one positive post from you…........it make my stomach hurt because we are looking at a reserection like the pitino years. Yes UK sunk that low…...........CBC will be more of a Rupp Coach by the time he leaves….........hopefully he stays just as long, but more than likely not…......I won’t bash former coaches. Hell I love Pitino and everything he did for this team. I love how Tubby was a personal person (?) but it was time to get back to a coach that doesn’t play the media, doesn’t care what we think. He isn’t a media guy, just doing what it takes to get by and thats it. He has UK as a target on all top recruits list, when was the last time that happened? I have decided I am ignoring your post from here on out, because, to be honest, you are another VITALE…......a Tubby lover….sad part is, this article didn’t bring him up.. Time marches on, either you are with it or you will be left in the past

What I know is that ...

Expressing our disapproval and disagreement in a polite way separates A Sea of Blue from some of the other boards that are almost intolerable.
