Open Shot -- NBA Draft Open Thread
Just in case we have some interested parties out there, this is an open thread for the discussion of the NBA draft tonight at 7:30 on ESPN.
If we are going to wait for Joe Crawford or Ramel Bradley to go, we could be up into the wee hours. But it will be interesting for other reasons. I will be curious to see if Lofton or Foster get drafted, and whether Beasley or Rose winds up #1 overall.

WOO HOO
This is the most entertaining night of the summer.
Westbrook at four. Not sure what seattle was thinking. He’s not a true point and you cant put him at the two cause then you’d have to find room for Durant and Green both at the three.

Gordon
Eric looks like a mobster. Oh and Knicks just ruined a pick. Danillo is going to bust.

Alexander
No. 8.
How long do you think we’ll wait to see a semi-local kid picked. I don’t count Gordon as semi-local.

A while
Not much local talent in this years draft.
Surprised by Augustin to Charlotte.
Thought the Jason Thompson pick was a bit premature. Im not so sure about Danilo. I think he might end up being pretty decent. Danilo’s favorite NBA player is Tayshaun Prince so he cant be too bad.

No longer interested.
Someone wake me when Joe Crawford gets drafted. This draft just got boring.

Big Mo
Florida’s own Marreese Speights goes sixteenth to Philly. Not bad for a soph… he was drafted ahead of Georgetown’s Roy Hibbert, so his workouts must have been good.
I’d rate Ramel’s chances of being drafted at slightly better than zero and Joe at 50/50 late in the second? What do y’all think?

Congrats ...
... to Speights.
He is a talented young man.

I agree.
Almost it seems like half of the guys drafted so far in the last half of this first round, Ramel isn’t getting drafted.
Joe should go in the second, but has a good chance not to. Speights is a beast though if he ever finds a work ethic.
And Courtney Lee from Western Ky finally gives the locals something to cheer for.

Oops
I meant to say I have no idea who half the guys drafted in the first round are.

I feel bad.
That forward from Kansas is good and teams are letting him sit there for international projects that will still play overseas for two or three more years.
What is the point of that, seriously?

Courtney Lee ...
... A Hilltopper in the first round.
Needless to say, I’m a little proud about that.

Can't believe ...
... Chris Douglas-Roberts slipped into the second round.
Somebody’s gonna get a bargain.

Agreed
And I’d rather have DeAndre Jordan than some of these foreign guys. Guess those teams are wanting to keep from adding salary for a few years.
by Acdixon on Jun 26, 2008 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's exactly it
The draft is becoming a salary cap diversion for a lot of teams, which makes the draft pointless. If Joe Crawford goes un-drafted, it’s because they can’t stash him away in Europe for two years.
Way to ruin the draft.

Congratulations to Courtney Lee
First Hilltopper since Tellis Frank ( ‘86 I believe ) to be drafted.
The young man wanted to leave, badly, his freshman year but his mother wouldn’t let him. He hung in there and had a great career.
I’m glad to see him go to a good team. He should have a solid career.

By the way, he and Bogans ( unless there is a trade ) should have ..
... a shootout ( ha, ha ) for playing time. Hopefully Lee’s arrival in Orlando will signal pine-time for JJ Redick.

More pinetime?
J.J. Redick is a couple overtimes away from averaging more than 48 minutes on the bench.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Recdick actually started seeing some playing time toward the end of last year. But I think that is probably over. Lee is so much more athletic, and quick than Redick, I don’t see how he doesn’t get PT over him.

Redick
Whaaaaat? But he was a McDonald’s All-American… who played at Duke… surely you jest that a lowly Sun Belt conference player would be a better professional?
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Congrats to him.

Brief Summary From Laker Fan Website
(Clipped)
Crawford attended Renaissance High School in Detroit, where he led his team to a perfect 27-0 record and a state title. He was named a McDonald’s All-American in 2004. Crawford originally committed to play for the University of Michigan, but reopened his recruitment and chose to attend the University of Kentucky as part of a freshman class that also featured All-Americans Rajon Rondo and Randolph Morris.
Seeing minimal playing time behind Western Kentucky University transfer Patrick Sparks and fellow freshman Ramel Bradley, Crawford asked to be released from his scholarship mid-way through his freshman year. After meeting with Wildcat coach Tubby Smith, however, Crawford did an about-face and returned to the team.
Crawford became a bigger part of the team’s rotation in his sophomore season, averaging 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
During his junior year Crawford continued to improve. He started 32 of 34 games and averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. He was the leading scorer in 8 games and set a new career high in an overtime loss against Georgia with 29 points.
Crawford became the 54th Wildcat to score 1,000 points in his career on December 1, 2007, against North Carolina. As of March 20, he is the 19th all-time leading scorer at Kentucky, with 1,448 points.
On March 20, 2008, Crawford closed his career with a loss to Marquette in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Crawford was the game’s high scorer, matching a career best with 35 points.

Maybe he’ll push Kobe for playing time :)

Joe is a Laker, Joe is a Laker!
Ok, so I admit, I am just a teeny bit excited about this! How fabulous for him…..just think, in his rookie year, he will have a very real shot at winning an NBA title! To me, this is soooo much better than going higher in the draft only to end up on a team that is “rebuilding” : )
Go get ‘em Joe!

making it hard on a Pistons fan...
I am going to have to figure out a way to root for the Lakers, Celtics, and Pistons.
In about 5 years the NBA is going to be flooded with former UK players like after the 96 season.

Flooded after 96
Yeah, but the easy thing back then was that they all played for the Boston Celtics!

9 To NBA From 2002 Thru 2008 (7 Years)
Or 10 to NBA from 1992 thru 1998 (7 years). Mashburn, Dent, Delk, Walker, McCarty, Pope, Anderson, Mercer, Nazr, and Sheppard.
1 more does not make a flood.
by FortyYearCatFan on Jun 28, 2008 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Change your timeframe just a bit there 40
Delk, Walker, McCarty, Pope, Anderson, Mercer, Nazr, Sheppard, and Wayne Turner and Jamaal Magloire andScott Padgett should all be counted in the “Post 96 Flood” that was referred to. That’s eleven players in three years. No matter who you are, that does constitute a “flood.”
And of course, my flippant comment about them all playing for the Celtics was a joke as well… so you don’t have to come up with a stat that only Delk, Walker, McCarty, Mercer, and Turner played for the Celtics.
No one was making an anti-Tubby comment so you can go crawl under the rock you live in with your aunt’s cousin’s roommate’s third husband who has connections to every athletic department in the nation and await the next round of Tubby bashing.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Draft stat concerning Crawford last night
I thought it was interesting when Stuart Scott pointed out that when Crawford was drafted (third to last) it kept this draft from being the first draft in almost 50 years of NBA history to not have any players from Kentucky, North Carolina, or Duke.
Of course, Carolina could have just as easily had three guys in the first round if some had come out and stayed in the draft. Still an interesting stat.

Amazing ...
... that neither UNC nor Duke had a player in the draft. I can’t remember when that happened last.

The PAC-10 represented itself very well...
The balance of power has certainly shifted away from the ACC here recently.
